Soom Idealian 75cm Discussion Part 10

Jun 10, 2021

    1. I'm curious about everyone's opinions about the interval to change the Soom elastics too, I've got 50-50 older & newer models I'm certain some are overdue. like Setsura mentioned, I can get some others to stand with the center of gravity shimmy-shake technique, but my Sooms have been not so much  so they probably need a tune up.

@OmitIdentity - I went through my history to see if I could find the seller I used, and they seem to still be around: Wholesale Leathers - eBay user id = seymourssi
eBay link for Wholesale Leathers 1.5oz - this was the "premium" grade version I got, which had no flaws throughout the piece received. I got this one to make some doll accessories and clothing, and figured I could use the scraps too.

eBay link for Wholesale Leathers 1.5oz dollmaking - this was not the premium grade, but was still very close in quality. this one was marked as undyed as a bonus.

in the states, you might still find Tandy Leathers around, but you have to really watch the listings for the thickness of the hide and they don't always say what it is. that's where the chamois type might help narrow the choices down.

    2. Many thanks! I'll do some comparing and digging around, and thank you for the wholesale leather links on eBay!! I'm not quite sure what to do with such a large piece since I only want it to suede so I guess I'll ask my local doll community if anyone wants to split it or see if there's smaller ones on eBay:3nodding:

    3. I also had my company faceup for that exact lim crack. It was under a year when I saw the cracking. The one other faceup I got from them is fine. I contacted soom and got lim redone, but I had to pay. Kinda bs since it sounds like it’s a wide spread thing.

    4. @annv did Soom have the same faceup artist repaint him for you? or did he turn out different?

I think I wouldn't qualify for after sale support as owner #2, but it's really good to know about this, especially if the faceup was "everything" to someone, even if it might cost to repair. thank you for sharing your experience

    5. They didn’t say if it was the same artist, but the faceup I got back looked more or less the same. Honestly it would probably be cheaper to go directly to the artist if they’re willing.

    6. Hi Hi!

So I recently recieved my very first Soom 75 lad, River! But I find that he....would like to kneel every given moment! lol.

Any ideas on how to improve his stability and me not getting into untoward accidents

Also any advice on protecting his resin (he's a bronze skintone)?

    7. Are folks excited about Lok? Not sure how I feel about him atm...

    8. @Kween I'm surprised that it's not sold out, just because.

      • x 2
    9. I'm new to Soom ID75 world, so I'm still figuring out what's popular and etc. I'm on the fence with Lok. I love his face in frontal view but not in profile view because I prefer a stronger jaw/chin. (Again this is just my preference though!)

    10. @Kween - I agree, and front vs. side profile is an astute observation to make. Some of my dolls were purchased for one or the other quite specifically. I find I get a little antsy over company doll photos if they don't have both front and side profile view pictures in the product listing.

    11. I'm reading more about how ordering certain sculpts like Hwain is near impossible because of its popularity in China. Now I'm wondering why Lok isn't sold out yet. Is it not a popular sculpt? Is it the economy/tariffs causing people to pull back on spending?

    12. It's rare [to me] for any sculpt not to sell out, but I only been around for over a year. I waited so long, that I gave up. After I bought a 70 sculpt (from a different company), all of a sudden Idealian was NOT sold out for one sculpt. And, the irony is, I really liked that Idealian that wasn't sold out. (The order window closed, before it sold out. So, it probably won't get re-released anytime soon and I might not see it second hand.)
Edit: BTW, I love my 70cm doll VERY much. :love

    13. @tinyflame I am sorry to hear! What sculpt was that?

    14. Wenzel. I would have bought a white resin. But, I also would have been determined to mod, give him larger cheeks and the look of deep set eyes.

      • x 1
    15. The fact that he hasn't sold out is probably evidence that he isn't popular. Also, I believe this is the first time a 'normal' version of him has been released, so he hasn't really been around long enough to get really popular. Tariffs almost certainly have nothing to do with it since the current tariffs only effect US citizens, and it's China that is Soom's biggest market currently (and then it's home market of Korea probably). That's why dolls started selling out to begin with, because Chinese doll owners took to Soom in a big way.

      • x 3
    16. The US tariff is still a nightmare... feared the price of PanPastel (made in China) would be go up, so added some for face ups. :whee:
Lok is beautiful but I've been waiting for Zak now, so maybe next time. Here is my newboy R-Hugh on YC body, I love it!

    17. Is there still a massive demand for OE Hyun in normal skin? I just fell in love with the sculpt damnit.

    18. I got a shipping notice for my Storm today, just a few days shy of 3 months of when I ordered him.

    19. Hi, how did you manage to hybrid him? did you use a neck donut adapter? I'd love to hybrid my soom river to another body and I love, love yc

    20. Am I seeing this right? Garion HASN'T sold out?

    21. I'm not a Soom expert, but maybe because Garion isn't coming with a dokkebi head this release. At least that's why I'm not buying.

    22. York is next? I'm finally going to cave :D

      • x 3
    23. Hello everyone, I have a question. Do you have to order the B.J. hands along an Idealian 75 or can you just leave them out and the doll comes with the normal hands? Not sure about this, since the order form requires you to choose an option and there's only the B.J. hands. I'm planning to order an Idealian 75 somewhere in the future, but I'm not too fond of the jointed hands.

    24. You don't have to order them. If you don't it'll just be the default resting static hands :) the order form makes it confusing, but you don't have to select them.

      • x 1
    25. Thank you so much for clearing this up! I was already worried that you couldn't get normal hands.

    26. The big deal about the jointed hands was always that I had to order them at the same time as the doll. If you order them later, with Soom’s inconsistent colors, they might not match. But if you know you will never want them, you are safe from this decision.

    27. I finally caved and ordered York on a Soom layaway plan! He’s going to be my first ID75 doll, and honestly, I’m feeling a mix of excitement and a bit of worry right now. I’ve been lurking on the Idealian website for quite a while — some dolls sell out super fast, while others stick around for a bit. The Artist version of York really resonated with me the most, so I just had to get him.

I went with the Artist version because it’s way more convenient that he comes with a face-up, instead of me having to hunt down a face-up artist later. According to the fine print, production takes 300 days… which means I won’t be getting him until next August!

Looking back, I probably should’ve just paid for him upfront instead of using the layaway plan, since it adds those annoying international fees. But oh well — I’m planning to pay it off by early next month anyway, hoping that might speed things up a little!

      • x 3
    28. congratulations on your first Soom ID75! Did you pick faceup A or B ?

      • x 1
    29. Thanks! I chose face-up A for my York doll because the moment I saw him, he reminded me of the Korean actor Lee Chae Min from the Netflix Korean drama, Bon Appétit, Majesty!
But the face-up is very versatile, and I could easily transform his character into an ancient Chinese opera performer.
I just hope it doesn’t really take 300 days for my doll to arrive. That’s such a long wait!

      • x 2
    30. Although still a long time, do note that SOOM goes off actual calendar days and not business days, if that makes you feel better. They're almost never overtime, buy they're usually fairly close to the estimated time for full set/makeup options in my experience.

Regarding your question earlier about dolls selling fast, it depends on which dolls are popular, and the largest market for ID75s is the Chinese doll community. So whichever doll is hot there will be the ones flying off the shelves.

As much as I hate SOOM sometimes, to their credit, they have done a relatively good job this year of releasing the popular ones a LOT, so the demand is less crazy than before, making a lot of recent releases of them not sell as fast. Although as someone who enjoys some of the older ones and wants more whacky stuff, it isn't to my favour, but it's saving my wallet lol.

      • x 6
    31. I just don’t understand why the Artist Version takes longer, and it doesn’t even include body blushing. I did some calculations:

      • Normal Production: 8–12 weeks → that’s about 2 to 3 months (≈ 60–90 days).
      • Artist Version Production: 300 days → that’s about 10 months.
So the difference between them is roughly:
      300 days − 90 days = 210 days, which is about 7 months longer.

In short: An Artist Version doll takes about 7 months longer to produce than a normal version.

Has it always been that long in the past if you selected a faceup?

Maybe I’m worrying too much about this.

The other thing I wanted to ask is: I’ve already started looking at clothes for my new doll. I’m not sure if I should just wait, since it’ll still be several months before my doll arrives. But I’ve been eyeing some outfits from FreedomTeller — can their doll suits fit the ID75 body? I noticed they use the Dollits 75cm body as a model.

    32. Faceups take a long time, I think that sounds about right. Especially when it's on the level on a promo faceup. As Setsura said already, this estimate doesn't include Korean holdiays or weekends. I do think now production is a waiting game and you may be overthinking it.

    33. The reason why 'artist version' takes longer is because the faceup is outsourced to independent artists. These aren't artists who work full time with SOOM, but rather SOOM has given these artists a contract which they have accepted to work on their dolls for them as part of the 'official' makeup set. These artists often have their own sets of private commissions running and their own private schedules, and whatever SOOM gives them will be agreed upon to be within their own and SOOM's schedule.

SOOM also employs the exact artist you see in the 'artist version' faceup, and their faceups pretty much look exactly as advertised. Some other companies (such as LUTS for example) may hire a 'promotional' independent faceup artist to show off the doll, but when you order the 'default makeup', it will be one of their in house artists who is replicating the faceup, shortening the time and cost involved.

SOOM is consistent, but they're quite notorious also for not handing the work to the outsourced faceup and full set artists until later in the production line, so it's not always at the problem with the artist either, but rather the way that SOOM decides to schedule things (I say this as someone who's known various people who have worked with SOOM before officially). For example, they may start shipping blank dolls first to get those out quicker and only give the heads to the artists after 70% of the blanks are finished or something (just using random numbers as an example). But as I said before, they are very good at keeping to their promised deadline, so I doubt it will go over the 300 day estimate, it would only be sooner and not later.

Regarding clothes, ID75 is the most commonly sold size at the 75 scale. If it's labelled ID75, it'll fit, and in your case, Dollits is a slightly larger body than ID75, so it will also fit. Freedom Teller has been making clothes for a long time, and if you ask, they can also probably tailor it specifically to ID75 for you.

    34. Interestingly, I went to the Idealian website to look at photos of Idealian York, and it seems that the ears are a normal shape. I thought all Idealian dolls came with elf ears, if I’m not mistaken.

Btw, I finally paid off my Idealian York! I guess I didn’t really need the layaway plan after all! It was tough, but at least now I don’t have to worry about payment deadlines. It’s such a relief knowing my doll is fully paid off — now the waiting game begins until it arrives next year!

      • x 1
    35. Only specific sculpts or variations of sculpts have elf ears. They dont have an ear changing system and it will just be what the sculpt is made as.

      • x 2
    36. Congrats on paying it off.

      • x 1
    37. Is it normal for ID75 body to not pose well? The chest join loves to slide around to one side. The body was made this year, so I am unsure if bad posing or some how its lose?

    38. @Setsura will have more intel than I but I think he was strung looser for shipping. That's what happened to me with my most recent order with Loongsoul. Once I restrung him, he poses perfectly.

      • x 1
    39. If it slides to one side, the elastic might also be not balanced. I'd try tugging the opposite leg if you don't want to restring him. Could also be loose elastic all around. Mine is a bit of a chore to move in any direction and he has a firm stringing.

      • x 1
    40. I have pulled his legs quite a bit in just messing around with him. He LOVES to lean and its kinda cute.

He does feel loose. I can pull his legs pretty fair. (Though putting is brain in made me think he was NOT lose lol)

      • x 1
    41. It's not as heinous as everyone makes it out to be, but it does come loose (on purpose) as @Haven_Of_Dolls336 mentioned. The reason for this is to prevent damage from being strung too tight during shipment.

Restring him with a length of about 2 meters, this should be more than sufficient and not particularly difficult, and adding in wire will solve the majority of problems.

It's a relatively basic body, which is precisely why a little bit of maintenance goes a long way, and the reason I still like it (I'm not a fan of locks and too many joints which only get in my way, I'd rather basic and I'll tame it myself with wire).

      • x 4
    42. My priority is posing, so I only have two Idealians, Narmer and Hyun. They are some of my worst posers for standing, but I adore them sitting and hugging. (They actually hug me when I carry them over a shoulder.) I have other dolls who stand beautifully but don’t sit. Trade offs. People sell the bodies often and fairly cheaply because the posing is not good but the heads are always a high price.

      • x 1
    43. Yes, Soom bodies are jokingly called "corpses". Tighten the strings on the body. Adding hot glue suede to the chest to help keep the chest from sliding. Some people even glue it down to prevent any movement altogether. The choice is yours. Wiring the body with aluminum will also help a lot. Good luck!

      • x 1
    44. You can do a lot of things if you add wire and restring it. Full set of image examples below of my own dolls under the spoiler cut. The last picture is unwired, restring only.

It's quite an old body, from around 2010 and hasn't been updated since. It still works well in my books, but it's not going to play nice straight out the box 99% of the time.

      • x 7
    45. Oh my god look at those poses. Wiring does go a long way. The body is much lighter then some of my other 75cm boys and that is nice. I will look into re-stringing him. Not sure if I will do wire but we will see. My other 75cm dolls are wired but they came to me like that. I am scared of making the strings to tight and snapping the brain. Even though the body is designed back in 2010 its still extremely pretty.

    47. Amazing poses!

    48. I'm going to get around to sueding and wiring my boy – I agree that the ID75 doesn't deserve the "corpse" reputation, but it won't be able to do crazy poses straight out of the box (I personally prefer dolls that aren't over-engineered: I find things like shoulder ridges and ratchets impede posing rather than enhance it, and I sometimes wonder how many of these fancy engineered joints have had prototyping and testing in resin instead of just at the computer model and 3D print stages. There's a big difference between something working in theory and working in practice, and cast resin is a lot heavier than 3D printing mediums).

I don't have a great deal of experience handling 75cm dolls – most of my dolls are 55-65cm with a few 70cm – but I find the ID75 more reliable than others I've handled, especially when it comes to posing the arms.
My boy is from 2022, and I don't know if he's still strung as he was from Soom, but he's very fond of slumping over and leaning back at the underbust joint, so sueding that would be my priority.

I've been trying to sew pants for him (a whole other exercise in patience) and I really need a heavy-duty doll stand, as trying to hold 75cm of heavy resin in particular ways to measure or check fit is a pain in the neck!

      • x 2

    49. I wanted to add to this and maybe give you some hope, :XD:.

I ordered the artist version of Midnight Duke Zak on August 28th and thought I wouldn't see him until late next year (it also said it would take 300 days for the artist version).

On December 14th, I got a surprise tracking number from Soom,!

And if you got the artist face-up, I can attest that it will look exactly like the promos!

The artists they hire do beautiful work and I wouldn't have minded if it took 300 days.

      Hope your Idealian arrives soon!

    50. It's nice to see them offering a free choice again. It has me so tempted for a second Xian. I think he might be one of my favorite sculpts. He's so so unique. Trying to justify my purchase by saying I already have outfits for him waiting :XD:

    51. Xian is awesome! And they're doing a head addon event on top of the regular free choice I'm so tempted... Zak and Xian... :(

    52. New Do we make a new thread for the Hyper gem, or edit this one? I'm very confused by these guys since they're basically the same measurements and look as Idealian, but not Idealian, but Idealian is still Idealian? :? Is it replacing Idealian?

      • x 2
    53. New It's likely the Hyper Gem range is designed to fill the niche of the Super Gem and Mega Gem ranges, which iirc Soom haven't done much with for a few years, which were mostly dolls with fantasy features. The Soom website used to be divided by doll line, but rolled them all into one website with the update and launch of Hyper Gems.

From talking to hobbyists more tuned in to CN and KR language communities, Soom's CEO has a reputation of being fairly resistant to change. ID75s are still in high demand despite the bodies being far less popular than the heads. I doubt ID75s are going anywhere soon, plus you don't tend to see fantasy features beyond horns, ears and fangs on ID75s, whereas Gem lines in various sizes have had hooves, digitigrade legs, wings and centaur bodies.
This new line doesn't interest me personally, because the new Hyper Gem body is another 2-part torso underbust cut 75 boy with seemingly no mobility thigh joints (I do believe the ID75 body is given an unfair reputation as a bad poser, but there are so many similar bodies out there that this new body does nothing to pique my interest).

As to whether the Hyper Gem line should have its own thread or all the large Soom threads should be rolled into one, perhaps that's more a how busy are the threads or moderation matter.

    54. New I think it's fine to treat this as a general 75cm Soom thread.
I guess I didn't read too closely, I thought maybe the HyperGems were a replacement body type for SuperGems when I saw the announcement.

    55. New
I guess my confusion (more like mild concern, tbh, since Soom has been changing lately) stemmed from the fact the hypergem is nearly identical to ID and the old ID body hadn't been updated for a long time. They had just released Hyperon normally and I assumed the HG was just their updated SuperGem, but yeah. I'm not sure at first glance I could tell the bodies apart tbh :XD:

    56. New The new Hypergem is with the main 'gem' website, not their Idealian site. It is 75cm but looks to be an extension of their gem range, as @Littlebirdzoom says. Especially as the new release has fantasy legs. Though not keen on their styling :sweat

      HYPERGEM BODYDOSSIER - The Gem

The body internal structure looks really interesting though.

I understand, I've been a Soom/ID fan for many many years. I think I'm not being understood because I'm not articulating myself clearly so that's my fault. Basically, I'm interested in knowing more behind Soom's decision to revamp the SG line to be basically an Idealian with fancy inserts while leaving their ID line alone, even though people seem to have mixed feelings about the ID body. I was very shocked at the measurements when I first saw the HG body. So I'm curious if they're going to extend any of the engineering to the ID line as well, or what they plan on doing, since they are very clearly trying to change their image up a bit. Obv we don't know the answer to that, I just think the changes are interesting to talk about. But, yeah, not keen on it either personally. I'll stick to my more simple fantasy parts on the ID line... which is funny to say, because the me years ago would have thought I was crazy just now xD

Regardless, I'm happy they changed the SG line even if it is a fancier 75, because those old SG bodies were very frustrating, but this isn't the thread for that. I'm looking forward to their next ID release and really wonder what they plan on doing going forward. I just feel like something's up their sleeve.

    58. New I’m super excited! My Soom York is shipping and has already arrived in Australia—I’m hoping it’ll be delivered in the next couple of days!

I’m not even prepared. I honestly thought I wouldn’t get him until August, judging by the 300-day production time with a face-up. I ordered and paid in October last year, so I’m amazed at how fast time has flown.

I really love the Idealian line and hope they continue it. The recent releases don’t include face-ups, and I’m not sure why—maybe their artist is on holiday, or maybe they expect lower demand right now. Personally, I only buy dolls if they come with a face-up.

The new website is also quite confusing and hard to navigate. I wish they’d just stick to the old one.

As for the new Hyper Gem—what can I say? I think they should have stuck to the Super Gem size. Why the sudden change to 75 cm when Idealians are already that size? It would have been better to create something more buff and muscular instead.

I’m also quite disappointed that some clothes I ordered from a reseller website at the same time (back in October) still haven’t shipped, while items I bought from Etsy and eBay have already arrived. It honestly makes me worry about getting scammed. I know this kind of long wait is common in the BJD hobby, but I just don’t understand how clothing can take 7+ months to make. What happens if something goes wrong, like the seller/ person making the item disappearing?

Maybe it’s just because I’m new to the hobby, but it’s hard to get used to such long wait times - for clothes!

The two Hyper Gem releases so far haven’t really excited me—though I guess that saves me money! I do wonder how well they’re selling.

I might get a Hyper Gem someday, but I’m really hoping for something more interesting—like an archangel. I’d love for them to recreate an archangel with wings and a sword, like the Idealian I missed out on.

It's because the Super Gem size is not popular with their biggest buying base, China and Korea. Also, the Idealian line never came with fantasy legs like the Hyper Gems will. The Gem lines were always known for fantasy parts.

Who did you order from? I've definitely waited that long for pre-order clothes from Chinese bjd clothing makers. Especially if the outfit is pretty intricate and they received lots of orders.
