Hi there! I was wondering if anyone has painted resin parts to look like shiny gold metal? I have a local friend who purchased a doll with lots of jewelry parts and we are trying to come up with a way to make them look like gold. I was thinking gold paint would not be shiny enough, even if I add a glossy top coat... I have an airbrush so maybe enamel paint? I am hoping someone here has experimented with this type of look, I would appreciate any suggestions and please post pictures if you have tried it before! Thank you! EDIT - 8/25/21 I thought I would add my results from taking everyone's suggestions into consideration! I also checked out some youtube videos! I decided to go with Golden fluid acrylic paint (Iridescent Gold) I also bought the Golden airbrush medium since I thought it would be best to apply the paint smoothly this way. here are my results on a white resin skull with MSC as a primer: I taped off one side so that I can try using a grey primer first then the gold airbrushing over it. maybe the gold will become a bit more deeper this way, and I can compare them next to each other. I will post more updates as I am able too! EDIT - 8/27/21 Supplies used: I added the primer to the other half! I was going to use grey primer but the bottle I had was separated and even after shaking, it would not mix back to normal. (it is a little old lol) So I have a black primer that was in better condition! I think the only difference this will make is that the gold will look more deeper than with the grey primer. here is an image of the resin before primer was applied I'll add the gold paint over the primer in a few days! UPDATE - 9-6-21 I had to evacuate due to hurricane Ida so this project will be on hold for a while... I was really looking forward to finishing it last week lol.. but mother nature had other plans >o< Will hopefully be able to update again in October! Update - 10-8-21 I am finally able to finish this project! I hope this helps someone in the future, I had fun trying out different techniques and I think I am ready to tackle my friend's Horus Egyptian armor and jewelry xD I will let my friend decide what she wants in the end but I personally think the gold on white with MSC primer looks more realistic to me. especially since it will be on armor and jewelry pieces, I think the lighter side looks more vibrant and polished! click here to see a gif of the way it shines! This is a photo after I used Gold Leaf Rub n Buff, which I thought would add some depth but it ended up being pretty close to the same color as the side with the black primer I also added a coat of glossy MSC which preserved its shine but also made it smooth and gives it some protection from scratches Thoughts or suggestions? feel free to leave a comment! Thank you all for your suggestions and helping me reach this goal! There exists a paint by Stuart Semple through his website Culture Hustle that is extremely metallic. He has a series of colored metal paints as well as one called Mirror, which is the most reflective silver paint I’ve ever seen. They are all acrylic. I’ve never seen anyone use Culture Hustle paints on dolls but I do not think it would be unsafe to. You could always email them and ask. They’re pretty good about that. edit: here’s a selection. They’re going to be a bit more expensive than standard paints but I believe they’ll go a long way. Silver Gold Mirror Metallic Paint Set including Copper and Black
There's some good YouTube videos trialling them... he did a sample boxset for charity and only found out afterwards... it was around 200 though
Update; the site specifically says that all of their acrylics are safe to use on cured resin. Makes sense, since they have a variety of unusual kinds of artists that buy from them.
@ashbelEro this looks really promising! Thank you for the tip! I think I will try this out for sure! @Roverstate I have never tried that before, but I will look up some tutorials and see how it is applied! what if it gets wrinkled when applying it? I wonder if its easy to smooth out
I second gold leaf. You'll need a sizing medium for it, which is basically a sort of glue. It looks good though!
I was looking at the Culture Hustle paints myself~ I only wanted the Mirror Chrome for a specific project, but that is apparently a solvent-based paint so I don't know if that one is safe on resin. @pikkochan Your gold so far look awesome! I am really interested to see how the other half looks with a different base.
Updated with more WIP pics! @AirimirOfGondor Thank you! I am also looking forward to how this will unfold!
Thanks for the update pics, really enjoying your updates Was thinking that with gold leaf (think it was, been a good number of years since I did some research myself but not for bjds but metals and picture frames) was to prime with red which give the gold a warmer hue I think (or maybe the red was to provide a rustproof coat).
@kyukyukyu oh I didn't even think about a red primer! I bet it would look really warm and lovely I might have to test that if this black primer doesn't look good xD
Here are the finished pieces! I think they came out very good! Will definitely use this paint again if I need to paint gold parts again! *EDIT* Forgot to mention I used MSC gloss to coat the pieces after I painted the colored parts (i used regular acrylic paint for the color accents) The glossy MSC still kept the parts looking shiny and protects it from potential scratches
That looks straight up incredible especially with all of the fine details painted on top. Beautiful work!
This is some absolutely beautiful work! I don’t make things for BJDs but I do make animal / creature art dolls and have always wondered about painting some bits of them gold! Can’t get over that deep colour and shine
Yes it is! I am also painting the rest of the doll, you can check out the parts I have completed so far on my Insta! @ pikko_chan
Great result) Thank you for sharing your experience. As for me, the side with black primer layer looks more realistic like an "aged gold", while the side without it looks like a brand new one
