Yes, it is tricky to use such small needles. Practice practice practice. Bright light and maybe magnifying glass might help. Start slowly. Good luck!
Practice practice as Uggst suggested. I wear my regular reading glasses, plus 2x magnifying glasses from the $ store. Try thinner yarn/thread if you keep splitting the yarn with your needles. As with anything new, the more often you try, the easier it gets. I'm comfortable knitting down to 1mm, but start to fail at .7mm these days.
I haven't had any splitting issues with my 1.5mm needles, but I tend to use thin and smooth yarns that aren't prone to splitting to start with. I also have many years of practice, and that always helps.
New Finished a sweater yesterday -- chainplied handspun targhee and 2.5mm needles (2.25 for the ribbing). Very glad I don't have to work with 1.5mm at this scale!
