I know from researching that yellowing is an inevitability for bjds, and I'm ok with that, but before I start displaying my doll in my room, I just wanted to check with experienced collectors on the place I'm going to clear off for her. The window in this picture is always kept with the blinds mostly down as pictured since I'm pretty light sensitive myself. If I'm hoping to display my bjds and not have them yellow in a rapid and dramatic way, would this bookshelf be an acceptable place for that? Or should I wait until I have a display method with a UV resistant glass door?
as long as the window is always kept covered it should be fine, although Id recommend some thicker curtains before doing that as the paper blinds deffo arent very UV cutting.
I agree with @Marzipan_Rose It looks like a pretty good place for dolls. Sure, thicker curtains wouldn't hurt anything, but it looks fine as it is. Especially if you place the doll within the book shelf rather than on top, because then you get a nice extra light shield from the side of the shelf. One more thing you can do is to make sure to handle your dolls regularly. Redressing, reposing and generally just playing around with them is the best way to avoid uneven yellowing and to discover any damage or other problem as soon as possible.
Well, I regret I have to say I would never place a resin doll directly in front of a window, and daylight blinds don't give much protection. But inside the wooden shelf, that should work just fine. (I had my dolls out in the room for the first ~ 6 years, then I found another solution.)
Thank you so much for your feedback! I think for now I'll set her up inside the shelf, and I like the idea of putting some uv film on the window, so I'll look into that.
One other thing that causes yellowing is *heat*, so if anything in front of that window gets very warm, then maybe not there. If not? Should be good.
I'd say the bookcase will be fine as the side of rthe bookcase is between the window and where the doll will be, so there will be no direct light from the window on the doll, even if the blinds were up. If the bookcase were facing the window, it would be different and the blinds would need to be kept down most of the time, but it's facing away form the window so should be fine. Teddy
I agree that inside the bookcase would probably be best. Otherwise, get the UV film or blackout curtains and put those up over the paper blinds.
Oh, I didn't know that! Thank you for letting me know! I'll probably give her a sabbatical in my closet during the summer then.
It feels so nice to look over and see her there with her sisters. cx I'll decorate the shelf a little more as time goes on. Maybe some fake ivy around the sides and top?
I agree! I would never put a doll in front of the closed blinds of a window. I am very careful about the light levels around my dolls, and they last years without any color change. I have a lot of dolls which I handle often, so I bought a huge 1/6 scale doll house with two full size opening doors and I keep my dolls in there and always close the doors. And the cabinet is in a darkened room with the blinds closed! Sometimes I remove all of the dolls on one shelf and photograph the dolls in the rooms of the dollhouse, which is also furnished. None of my dolls are over 12". I've seen American Girl doll houses that could fit 1/4 scale bjds easily, so this would work for larger dolls also. I ordered my 1/6 doll house as a kit on Etsy from England, and it came out beautifully, and it looks very nice in my "Hobby Room". It was the perfect solution to my doll storage problems! Before the dollhouse I kept my dolls on a shelf as you have, but I also used a tension window curtain rod to hold up a light curtain. When I was in the room with my dolls, I opened up the curtain to admire them, and then moved the curtain back in place when I left the room!
