I bought some silicone washers off of eBay to see if I could use them like sueding. They arrived today and I tried them out on my SD10 girl. I got them from The Washer House on eBay. I had actually been to 5 different hardware stores before I ordered them and I had no luck at all. The hardware employees always had no clue what I was talking about. They must not be a common item at all. The 1.5 inch are good size for her hip joints, and the 3/4 inch ones were good for her knees and ankles. I kind of wished they were just a bit bigger for the knees, but they might stick out if they were. The 1/2 inch size were too small, but I bet they might work on a tiny, or possibly an MSD with thinner elastic. If I were you, I would only order the translucent silicone washers because all colored types could stain your doll. I had been wanting to suede my girl because her knees were a floppy horror. So I am happy to say that these silicone washers have given her some improvement in posing. I think she probably still needs wiring too, though. The hardest part was restringing her feet, because she's so old she doesn't have hooked ankles. I think if I could have done a better job stringing them she might stand a little better. If anything, the washers seem to help keep them from flopping sideways when I stand her. I also like that the washers were not too fat to interfere with the movement of her joints. All in all, it was fun to do. It's like my doll has the Kips system like Yukinojo now.
Yukinojo's aren't glued in, so no, I didn't glue them. I just strung them on the elastic between the joints.
Interesting idea. Is it possible to make a cut in the washer and add the washer to the joint / elastic without the re-stinging? Are the washers very very thin and flexible, or are they fairly rigid? Thanks for sharing this idea. Very creative!
They are very thin and flexible, so I don't think they would stay on very well if you cut them and stuck them around the elastic. However, Pelicandeb has an interesting idea about glueing them. I bet if you bent the leg back to get the joint open, you could glue a cut washer into the joint quite easily! And the washer would never poke out of the joint occasionally like Yukinojo does.
I think that the reason the KIPS system silicone washers aren't glued in is because practically nothing sticks to silicone except more silicone. Which is why so many modern baking utensils are made from it nowadays. The company I work for makes a silicone adhesive to seal seams on silicone treated tents, because no other kind of adhesive sticks to it. Linda S. galatia9
My sd16 Olivia had them like Yuki does, it was really great! Except like you said they would get sucked in sometimes, I guess using silicone glue to keep them in place is a good idea! Make sure it's scentless though, cause yucky! The smell of vinegar gets stuck in my nose for ages after catching a wiff of normal silicone glue! LoL *jen
has anyone ever tried applying silicone directly into the joints really thin, and let it cure? I wonder how well it would work.
Yes and it wasn't very successful. It didn't grip very well so the sueding part didn't really work, and it also didn't stick very well to the resin, but kept scuffing off. I peeled it all out and had to sand all the siliconed areas with coarse sandpaper to remove the filmy residue and give the glue for good old fashion pliver some grip on the resin. Therefor I wouldn't recommend using silicone glue to glue the silicone shims in either. Armeleia did a tutuorial about putting silicone (from a tube) on to fabric bandage tape to ake sueding stickers, but I can't find the link. Untill I get a chance to try hotglue, I am sticking to pliver and contact glue.
A KIPS Discs FAQ Note: This is a work in progress. Pics will be up this weekend as examples. What are KIPS? KIPS are silicone discs that are put in the joints of dolls to make them pose better. Like sueding. What do KIPS look like? KIPS discs are flat doughnut shaped silicon discs. The come in two sizes Large and Small. (Pictures later) What are the measurements of the "Large" and "Small" KIPS discs? Outside Diameter - Large 2.5cm/1in ~ Small 1.90cm/.75in Inside Diameter - Large .5cm/.25in ~ Small .5cm/.25in Where do I buy KIPS discs and how much do they cost? KIPS discs are made by Volks and are available in their stores or online. On the japanese site and in the japanese stores a set of KIPS cost 880 yen. On the VolksUSA site and in the USA store you can buy a set for $10. (all prices without tax) How many KIPS discs come in a set and how many do you need per doll? Each set comes with 2 large discs and 6 small discs. The number you need depends on your doll. For example new body Volks dolls have "locking" knee and hip joints, so they don't need them. What joints do I put the discs into? It is all personal needs, some dolls may need them in their legs, others might not. The following is a list of the dolls Volks has released and where they have discs: Yukinojou - 1 small in neck, 2 big per shoulder, 1 small per wrist Thanks shirou_oh_sakura Amelia - 1 small in neck, 1 large per shoulder, 1 small per elbow Thanks s2kitty Kurt - unknown Williams - 1 large per shoulder, 1 small per elbow, 1 small per wrist Thanks ShaRooN EDIT: cerine's Williams came with 1 large in his neck as well. Kurumi - 1 big in neck, 1 small per shoulder, 1 small per elbow, 1 small per wrist Thanks Shana-chan EDIT: My Kurumi came with: 1 big in neck, 1 big per shoulder, 1 small per elbow Are there any drawbacks of KIPS? Yes, for some doll's joints they are too big and too thick, also some times they get "sucked" into the body pieces, like when re stringing. The KIPS are too big for my doll's joints!! What do I do?! You can cut them down a bit to be less noticeable. Sadly there is nothing you can do about the thickness. Will KIPS work in non-Volks dolls? I would assume so as long as the hole in the joint where the elastic goes through isn't bigger than, as big as, or nearly as big as the KIPS disc it self ---------------------------------------- Ugggg This is all I can think of right now. If you have any questions other than picture requests or suggestions of things to add please post here and I will add them to the list.
Okayy, I've just recieved a Williams body today and wow, I must say these discs really do make posing a dream Manami, i'm not sure if you are in need of the location to where williams has these discs but the two big ones are in the shoulders, followed by two more at the elbows and the last two are located where the wrists are. So basically, all 6 KIPS discs used for the arms ^^
Yukinojou has four big ones on his shoulders (2 on each side), one for the neck, two small ones for the wrists...... and that's it.
Kurumi has one really big one for her neck, two for shoulders, two for elbow, two for wrists (I think), and no more than that. They're actually waaaay too big for her (except her neck), and I'll need to cut them down later. I honestly don't think they can be 'sucked' into a joint, or at least, not if you're careful. ^^
Will these work on other sd sized by other companies? I would love to improve my hypermaniac posing as it drives me nuts. So they are rubbery and that is what improves the posing? they stop the upper thigh from swinging in the sockets? this is the issue with my hyper the legs kinda swing and flop even though the stringing is fairly tight.
I put the Kips disc in the neck on my Yo and the head stays put much better.. and as for slipping into the neck hole, that is really if you take the head off or pull the arms a bit.. they really don't slip if you treat your doll with gentle care when posing
My Kurumi came with them in the shoulders and elbow joints. I don't think she's got one in her neck, I'll have to look again. They *can* be sucked into a joint. When she came to me, one of her shoulder kips had been sucked into the torso. I had to get pliers to pull it out. Mine did not come with any in the wrists... unless they've been sucked into her arms and I haven't found them yet. I have yet to unstring her... They do seem to help with positioning her arms, but I'd think stringing and putting them back in would be a pain in the butt. My guess is that they're made of silicone. They're almost-clear, and very rubbery. Edit: And following the link, they're definitely silicone. Thanks Manami.
Ugh, I know, I'm dreading that. But, I have to do it. I REALLY like the added posability, but I hate that they stick out like that, so I do what I must.
I think thses KIPS disks would help older dolls to hold better poses. I'm going to buy them for my vrs1 Shiro... >_>; he really needs them. Does anyone have pics of them in a doll?
I just wanted to add the Williams I received came with the big disc in his neck, like Kurumi (not sure if this is of any use or not xD; ).
My Williams just came & he came with an unopened KIPS package; but then I had the full esthetics services so I'm rather glad they didn't put them in.
I have a few dolls with the KIPS system in~ *S is small, M is medium, L is large* SD16 Olivia Morgan: 1M in neck, 1M in each shoulder, 1S in each elbow SD16 Yukinojo Sawaragi: 1M in neck, 2L in each shoulder, 1S in each wrist (I found my Yuki didn't need them in his wrists, so I moved them to his ankle joints)^^ SDC Kurt: 1M in neck, 2S in each shoulder SD Kurumi: 1M in neck, 1M each shoulder, 1S each elbow I also used some extra KIPS pads I had and cut them into halves, then cut those into crescent shapes, and then I glued them into joints of some of my other dolls. I just used a dab of super glue and it worked excellently. My Jun Tachibana poses great now~ For any joints that are having issues with the KIPS disc being sucked in or being folded or mangled, I just use a little dab of super glue (like one drop) to set it in the exact place I want it to stay. They've stayed great and I can peel them out if I want to remove them^^ Hope this helps! -Philip ps. I plan on using a KIPS set in my Limhwa Half Elf as well~ I'll let you know how it goes^^
My Cecile came to me with the KIPS Discs in him. He has one small one in each wrist, one small one in each elbow and one large one in each shoulder. I just thought I'd add since I didn't see him on the list
Well, I just successfully strung them into some of my oldskin nono 13's joints, and they are great for posing! she can hold her arms up and they are very stable. The downside is that they KEEP GETTING SUCKED INTO HER STRINGING TUNNELS! ARGH! This is the only problem I've had so far, though. I can't even tear them when tugging them out, which is a plus as I'm always digging in her joints with tweezers. <.<
I've got them in my Oldskin SD13 girl. I don't think they're brand specific or even resin specific. ^_^ They work great, except they get sucked into her stringing channels and require a restring in order to put in.
KIPS are good for just about every type of doll, new or old, Volks or not. I've got them in all of Volks dolls and have some waiting to be put in my Custom House, Hyper Maniac and Dollstown boys too. You don't have to use them in all of the joints if you don't want to, just insert them into the problem areas. I took the KIPS out of my SD16's wrists as the seemed to create mobility issues rather than help, another doll only has a KIPS ring on his neck. The only doll I'm not using them on is the Bermann because he has all those extra rotator cups in his joints and the double jointed knees and elbows...I don't think they'd work for him.
Yo-SD Anne Sweet Dream has a KIPS disc between her head and neck. It works beautifully! Now to buy a few packets for my MSDs...
Here's a post of how to put in kips. It's in Japanese so I'm not sure what it says, but the pictures help.
I have 2 older Yo tinys , Suzunna and Kassumi ...both without kips ....and they have very floppy heads ....and they have the head falling off syndrome still love them for it LOL Piccalo has a kip ....amazing ...I noticed it straight away the differnce in posing he head has neVer fallen off either now Im waiting for Puff , I wonder what he will be like
Hi Manami!~ Thanks for crediting me (even though I dun remember this...) Starfighter's description of the SD16 Yukinojou KIPS is more accurate. The piece in the neck is medium sized I should say. And the KIPS I bought from Volks USA cannot refit the ones I torn!~ I tore the piece in the neck and the left wrist (by pulling the S-hooks through the discs). The discs holes are not huge enough for the thick SD16 strings to go through (not even a single strand of it, what's more when it's two together) In the end I placed the S discs on an MSD shoulder. The biggest one in the picture is smaller than the ones in his neck. Basically if the strings cannot go through, you'll have to cut it bigger.
I've been searching for this but I haven't found any info on applying KIPS and I apologize if there is another thread with this info.. I bought some of the volks Kips pads for my sd-13 girl because she was a bit floppy...but I don't know how to apply them! I tried putting the elastic stringing through the holes of the kips pad but it doesn't make any sense to me because the pads don't stay at the joints, they move with the elastic and it didn't do anything. Should I glue the pads on the joints? If I do glue it, wouldnt the tension and movement from the stringing keep detaching the kips from the joint? And where do the Kips pad go?
You put them on correctly. A lot of people have complained about the KIPS being sucked up into the holes by the elastic, but that is how they go on. They go wherever you want them to go. I suggest shoulder, elbow and knee. Some put them in the neck but I've heard that does no good.
I have a question, say if I didn't want to suede my doll, can using KIPS work the same way as your doll being sueded? Is there any particular difference? Also a question with the new Volks bodies have 'locking' knee and hip joints, with the old bodies, can this process be done? Or are the new bodies made entirely new with that function? I'm so nooby...
The locking-knee joints in the new SD models make KIPS unnecessary. I haven't had my Volks girl for long, but she's the easiest to stand up, and I haven't sueded her at all. The big problem areas, I find, are the knee and ankle joints. This isn't a problem anymore with Volks, apparently, but the KIPS made a huge difference in my CP girl's standing ability - more than sueding, as a matter of fact. I don't think you have to do both. With the disks, there's no risk of your sueding (either hot glue or material) peeling off, I'd think... With a little care while you string, the disks won't be sucked into the elastic channels. This was a problem at first with my CP doll.
Thanks for posting this. I just got a SD-Kun and she is kinda floppy. I had the foresight to ask about wiring while in the store and they gave me these kips. Now that I got home I was like "What do I do with these things?!"
Uhm... I had cut some plastic disks out slightly larger then the joint hole, and cut a hole in them to for the string to go through....the slightly larger 'disks' where much stiffer and kept the kips disks from slipping into the body. I used the clear lids of Pringel cans to make the plastic 'washers'. They, along with the Kips, hold up my old version Shiro-boy's knees better. Now he can hold up his leg and stand better.
Am I correct in assuming that using KIPS will prevent joints from rubbing together too much? I plan on doing a full-body paint in the future so trying to stall the paint from rubbing off at the joints in a concern of mine.
I am thinking of getting some of these for my girl, but the ebayer in the link above is not selling them. I found another seller, but they sell them in different thicknesses. Anyone know the best thickness to use? 1/32 1/16 3/32
What are the KIPS parts and how are they used? I bought a Super Dollfie pack for the s-hooks and it has those in with them. I think they are to help with posing but I'm not sure how. Please explain. I'm still such a newbie
Same here I got Volks Kip parts, I'm guessing you put the string through them and sit them on the joints but I only got 3 kips disc all of which didn't really look like they would fit anywhere. So yup I'd like some explaining too thank you!
they are used to hold the arms and head in place mostly.. you place them thru the string at the neck, shoulders and elbow joints.. easy to do as you just un hook the head, and arms at the hands.. they are terrific
Thank you. umm..OK maybe I'm an idiot but how do you do that? Is there a stringing tutorial that includes them?
I beg to differ on the neck. At least with yo-sd the neck kip makes a big difference to holding head poses. You just have to check it doesn't get sucked into the neck hole from time to time If you did you would have to trim them the smallest kips disk is bigger than the joint you mentioned. That's why when you buy yosd now they only have neck kip installed.
Has anyone used this product or something similar for their dolls joints? I've seen discussions of liquid silicone and silicone washers so I wonder about this. Hot glue sueding just didn't do it for me and I don't want to use actual suede (vegetarian) so...
Actually, this something similar to kips which Volks sells Volks already has them precut so you just have to slide them on but they are only for the arm and leg joints. Pupapa shows that you can cut them to other shapes and sizes to fit the torso area. I'd definately think Pupua's silicone sheet is more worth it since you actually get a whole sheet but you have to cut it yourself. I've only used the ones from Volks and they work great for me and holds better poses with the arms. However, some people don't like it because they say it gets pulled into the socket which has never occurred to me.
Ginarolo has sold discs like this for joints in the past, try PMing her. i don't know if she still sells them.
I really wonder if its worth it it seems expensive from Volks? I hope this sheet is good Im afraid that the kips or the sheet looks really thick though? how do i get that inside the slots it seems pretty hard
The ones from Volks are expensive and I've never bought any. My newer Volks dolls came with them already so I didn't have to purchase them. The kips aren't that thick. To put in the kips or silicone discs, you have to unstring your doll to get onto the elastic cord.
Oh yes, please let us know TrekkieGrrrl! It does look like an interesting product and the price isn't bad. I imagine from that sheet I could probably put it on both my girls.
I wonder if they are actually silicone, it looks like a sheet of hot glue, and how do you glue it in the joint like this??? I'll try to buy it anyways... http://pupapa.com/images/tools/SiliconSheet12.jpg
My thought exactly. And since I was buying something else from them, I was perusing the site looking for other interesting things to buy (hah I went there for a pair of their DIY eyes and left with a load of eyes, a pair of pants and this sheet...) I don't think you're supposed to glue it in, Since it's a sheet you roll up it will try to unroll itself thereby putting an outward pressure on itself - that's what's keeping it in place, together with its own stickyness. Well.. at least that's my guess. We'll see, once it arrives
I think it's more a protective sheet to keep it from sticking to everything while you draw on it ect. No glue, at least I think not. We'll see. I just got a notice from Pupapa.com that they'd shipped my stuff
