Repairing Chipped Resin

Mar 4, 2005

    1. Okay I was trying to change my dolls eyes and forgot what Twotone had told me about destringing her partially so the headcap comes right off so I pulled at it and managed to get it off the S hook when it goes flying out of my hands right onto the tile floor. Luckily no MAJOR damage was found except probably a 1 x 2 cm chip was missing off the side. Now this really bothers me, I know I can't replace the whole headcap but is there anything I can use that is similar in color to fill the chipped area?

    2. Did u try using epoxy to fill the crack ..
Or those crafting stuff they sell in craft store.. The one which look like a dough ..

    3. Epoxy is really the only thing I suggest but it isn't gonna blend that great.

    4. Thanks for moving this mods

I'm not too concerend about it blending since it is under the wig it's just I feel so bad when I see the big chip >__<

    5. lots of little chips happen with normal eye changing, but aie is right. the apoxy putty is your best filler (as far as I know)

isn't that stuff bright bright green or something?

    6. It can be covered with several thin washes of acrylic paint, but since the chip is on the headcap, my advice would to just leave it be. Look at it this way - you might find it an eyesore, but all humans have little scars and nicks which make them who they are - now your doll does too :) It's part of her story with you :)

    7. It can be. It comes in lots of different colors depending on who you go with. Games Workshop Blue-Yellow Epoxy putty is usually sold in hobby stores that carry the Warhammer and Warhammer 40k lines(miniature gaming). Milliputti comes in white and terracotta and can sometimes be found at hobby stores. Apoxy Sculpt comes in several different colors and can be found on their website or firebirdarts.com. Then there's Magic Sculpt- but I don't have any experience with that. :3

    8. A very sweet friend said this to me last year when my brand new car got her first door ding from an idjit in the parking lot of Toys R' Us.

"Look at it like it's slapping the bottom on a new baby."

As long as the injury is in a covered up spot I don't think you should worry about it. In addition, if you epoxy it there's no guarantee that the epoxy won't just chip either through regular wear n' tear.

    9. Fia faceplanted into my sewing machine this afternoon and it chipped her face >.< (note to self: never mess with blinds while doll is sitting on windowsill). Thankfully it is on the side of her head and could be a lot worse, but it's definitely visible. Rather than just going at it with fine grain sandpaper, I was wondering if there is a best plan of attack. I mostly just want to buff it down a little bit; I know it'll make her makeup uneven by removing some of the blushing, but I'm not willing to give up her default makeup yet (especially since I don't have the money to commission her a new one right at the moment...)

      Poor Fia :crushed

    10. How big is the chip?

You could sand it down a bit...you could try to fill it with a little Testors putty, sand it a bit to blend, then touch up the paint...you could cover it with a little Band-Aid...give her a tat...

If you are going to sand down just a tiny spot on her face, try using 320-400 grit sandpaper.

Sanding off the blushing may make it more visible.

    11. Help! I just received a sweet Serendipity Alice but her neck has chips. I have the pieces. What can I use to repair her

    12. I used superglue to repair a whopping head-chip and it worked wonderfully ^_^ If the chips are in a visible area, you may wanna do some sanding work after though. Good luck!

    13. i like accdentally penknifed my sleeping arthur head... so i am suppose to sand it off??

and i juz wanted to asked if resin chipped off can i use super spultety of those clay bought in art shops and paint over it???

yeah juz wondering thanx for the help :D

    14. Super Sculpey and other types of polymer clay (Sculpey, Fimo, Premo) require baking in an oven in order for it to harden. Without baking, the clay will remain eternally soft. Personally I would not risk using any polymer clay for repairing a doll because it would require baking a resin head in an oven and I don't know if it would ruin the resin head or not. I would recommend buying air-drying clays instead. Here's a list of some air-drying clays that you can purchase:

      http://polymerclayexpress.com/airdryclays.html

    15. A good option is epoxy! Do a search, it requires you to match the skintone with paint, but better than having no skin at all :)

    16. OMG My dollie...I just go her yesterday and on her abdomen where the joint is, on the top peice, the chest peice I guess, its chipped a in a tiny spot, I don't know how it got there and I don't know if it was there yesterday! It's not big or really bady its just a tiny spot but still...I've only had her for about 22 hours!

Also there is a small gap between her headcap and her head on one side! It doesn't mess up the wig or anything but it bothers me. She's my first and I'm afraid she's going to get messed up. My mom would kill me.

And I think one of her legs is tighter than the other if thats possible. When I got her one ankle joint wasn't in completely and when she sits down on knee bends farther than the other....

    17. okay, first... slow down, take a breath, get some focus back.

going in reverse: one leg being tighter than the other is usually just a matter of stringing, and some fiddling with her limbs and elastic can correct that.

the gap in the headcap -- go to the discussion forum for your doll's size and poke around to see if there's an AR thread, and ask if that's normal. other AR owners will know.

the chip: where is it located?

    18. Close to her right side, on the the bottom part of her torso...

    19. from what I've seen of the many dolls I've handled, it's not entirely uncommon for there to be a gap in the headcap. many doll makers don't worry too much about it because it doesn't show with the wig on. para-chan is right about the stringing being out of balance causing one leg to be tighter than the other. also remember that dolls are hand-made, and the original sculpting is also done by hand. just like people, dolls arent' quite symmetrical. trying to adjust the stringing might help, or it just might be part of your doll's personality.

and on to the chip... of my (embarrassed) eight dolls, two of the new ones and one of the used ones have arrived chipped or cracked. if I found the piece, I superglued it back together. in some cases, if the doll arrived chipped (check the box for the missing bit), the manufacturer may replace the damaged portion, and you should definitely contact them. most of the chips my dolls have gotten over the time I've played with them have been small, unnoticable, and really didn't show when the doll was dressed or displayed. chips happen. resin is brittle, and if it is thin, you might find many chips appear over years of playing with and handling your dolls. my grandmother always said of chips in the dishes that each represented a memory. you could think of it that way. some of my dolls have thin resin and LOTS of memories.

    20. Well its not a big chip or anything but she's my first one and brand new...Its hardly noticeable...but it freaked me out a bit...

    21. If it's especially small then you could easily sand the edge just slightly and it will go away. If you're scared to do it yourself then there's lots of doll owners in Florida... find a meet-up thread and ask if any of them with experience sanding/stringing will help you with her.

It's understandable to be concerned about your very first doll, but once you get to know her you'll feel a lot better. Small chips are unfortunately a way of life, but especially since its her body a little sanding won't show at all if its done right. And stringing is an easy-peasy fix. (Just requires a little elbow grease and a wire hanger...)

    22. My Poor Maasumi's had a pice chip off her leg :...( I tryed useing super glue but it didn't stay on :( dose anyone on DoA know what glue to use?

      Edit: Added pics :(

    23. You could use epoxy to cement the damaged piece back on

    24. It's no problem, i'm glad that I could help! ^^

    25. just make sure that the epoxy doesn't cement the balljoint together x.x

    26. I used gorilla glue~ it worked nice.

    27. Super glue gel- or epoxy

    28. Make sure to un-string her leg before gluing the piece of resin back on!

    29. I'm sorry to be a nuisance, but I need a little help... :sweat If anyone would kindly tell me what would be best, or point me in the right direction, I'd be very, very grateful. ^^

Well, much to my horror, I found my poor girl (BF Sarang) face-planted on the desk where she had been sitting. (CATS!) X[] Upon examining her I noticed her nose had taken on a bit of damage. It isn't misshapen, but there's a white ring on the tip and some little flakes came off.

I'm hoping that it's just a chip in the MSC, and not damage to the resin itself, but I don't know. I really have no knowledge about these sort of things and have no clue as to how to go about fixing it.

Would sanding be the proper way to repair this? And if so, would the entire faceup need to be removed? I also wonder if this is something I should even attempt to fix myself. I've never done any mods or faceups before. If it's likely I'd make her worse, should I send her to someone who knows what they're doing instead?

I'm doing my best not to panic (just yet.) I really apologize if this has been covered already, but I did multiple searches and haven't found anything on this particular subject.

Thanks so much! (I really don't know what I'd do without this forum.) ^^

    30. I think you should start on gently cleaning the nose to see if it's MSC.

If it looks like damage you can sand the area of damage with a very fine sandpaper, like 1000 or 1200. You can buy them at a local auto parts store. There is a risk that you may have to do the face up again, as the sanded area may look lighter than the rest of the face.

    31. I agree that light sanding is your best chance. You are unlikely to hurt your doll as long as you don't do anything wild, like use a dremel.

    32. Gage and Buff, thank you~! ^^

I tried cleaning her nose with a soft cloth and water. It did make the white mark less visible, but it still looks a tad off. I'll pick up some fine sandpaper later today, and see how it goes. It seems that, worst case scenario, I'll need to get her a new face up, right?

    33. :o

I bought her on ebay and she came with a chipped shoulder I'm so afraid of moving her arm... what is the whole pice comes off, it's like a crack.
And i tried to take a picture.. but I think my camera is to bad.. and the problem dosen't seem to exist when i take a picture....

      :...( :...( :...(

pleaser help.. should I glue with something before the whole thing gets chipped ?
      and what glue.... -panic-

      :( :aeyepop: :aeyepop: :nowords: :...( :...( :...( :...(

    34. Take a deep breath or two first. Secondly, can you explain what it's like more, I'm kinda confused and not following. Is it a big crack or not? Starting from where and ending where?

Pictures... did you try taking them by holding the camera up close or at a distance? Possibly try whichever way you didn't for a clearer picture? Or minor photoshopping (or work done in paint) to give a general idea of where it's cracking?

As for ebay buying, did the seller mention anything about that? You could file a legal claim if you used paypal for the seller not mentioning that or negotiate it with the seller for a partial refund of some sort.

    35. I will try taking a picture.. and no she said nothing about the crack... :...(

    36. [IMG]

it dosen't show that much :...(

but this is how big it is... and looks..

    37. Ouch, that's pretty big. I don't think it'll hurt her if you move her arm, since it wouldn't be putting pressure against the crack, though something like that definately should've been mentioned in the description when you bought her.

At this point you've got 2 main choices:
      1. negotiating w/seller or paypal if you used that for refund like things and sending her back or
      2. working on fixing her.

If you take option 2 then you've got 2 more choices:
      a. trying to fix her yourself or
      b. sending her to someone to do the fixing. there should be many talented people on here that would be able to do something.

As for fixing her yourself... possibly you could use hot glue, though I'm not sure that'd be the best method. There's moldable epoxy resin that you could probably put in the crack and over it a bit then sand down once done to even things out... though I'm not an expert or experienced by any means in actually fixing dolls so there's probably people out there much more qualified to give good advice than myself.

    38. but no ones answering but you... and I don't want to send her back.. but I would like some of my money back. or that isen't possibel ?

where can you buy that mold? (live in sweden so don't know if I could get it here)

and witch glue should oyu not use.. ?

    39. I can definantly see the crack as well, and if I were you I would try to talk to whoever sold her to you and try to get some of the money back. If they failed to mention the crack it's not you fault, and they should (hopefully) be willing to help if you are not satisfied. I agree with Nana there are many people who can work wonders when doing repairs. Maybe just check around in the customizers section of the forum. I think it's under Commissionable Services (please correct me if I'm wrong)

But anyway, I really hope you can get her fixed and I hope this helps you some. Good luck with your girl.

      Hugs! :)

    40. I can't afford anything after buying her..:...(

    41. Okay, woooah. Calm down, take a deep breath. There are plenty of people that will fix her for you, some for free. And you should definitely talk to the seller and try to get some of your money back.

    42. Maybe after asking for a partial refund because of the chipped shoulder will give you enough to get her repaired. And like pawpaw previously said, some people may even fix her for free and all you would have to pay is shipping.

      Hugs

      Kait

    43. where.. ? how.. ?

      I can't find anything in this place :...( :...( :...(

    44. she says it wasen't there trought the shipping..

    45. I didn't see it mentioned, was the doll insured? The crack is easily fixable, trust me. My first doll arrived with a chipped ankle, and then I managed to break the lip on the head cap. Same with second doll.......and third. I think it's become a tradition, break something (small) right away and get it over with, LOL! The first ankle I fixed with super glue, that was a year ago and it's still holding strong. Someone suggested apoxy clay which I think would work well to, though some sanding would be needed, most likely for both. She can be fixed, even if the piece breaks off, just keep it. If you lived closer I would be happy to do it, for free even. Someone over there hopefully will see this and help out. I wouldn't use hot glue as it will just gunk up the crack, be hard to remove and be most likely temporary. Chin up, breathe, it will be ok. It just might take a little bit. Oh, I just thought too, you could just send the torso piece to get fixed, that would save a lot on shipping!

    46. Do you mean where and how you can find someone to fix her? Sorry, unsure of what you meant, let me know and I will try to help you.

    47. what kind of glue would you recomend... ?
What should it not have.. I have figurene glue and a glue that keeps anything in but it containsaceton and methylacetate

    48. where to find those kind of ppl... ?
It's hadr navigation trought this site..

    49. I'm not sure what they would call it in Sweden, here it's just called Super Glue. It looks as if part of the chip is lifted up a little. It would be easier if the arms where taken off. I would just put a drop inbetween the crack, and then hold fimly. Try not to get any on you! And have a paper towl or cloth to wipe up any excess. Is this your first doll? Are you familiar with stringing a doll? I've never looked at the ingredient list for super glue, so I'm afraid I can't tell you what's in it and what's not. Just to clarify, this is a resin doll and not vinyl right?

    50. I think what I would do is post a thread in the Marketplace - Commissionable service area. Be sure to go under customizers because that is most likely where you would find repairs. You could post a thread explaining what has happened to your doll (be sure to include the pictures so people could see what they would be working on) You may also want to inclue that you would like for people to repy or PM you with a price on how much it would cost to repair it. Some people may even offer to do it for you for free. I would offer to do it for you for free if I knew how, but sadly I don't. Just keep checking until you find someone with a decent price, but be sure they have a good feedback and you may want to ask them for pictures of their previous work just to be safe. (You never know, you don't want to send your brand new doll off just to lose her) And I agree with the previous post, you could just send her torso to save a bit of money on shipping. I hope you get your girl fixed and I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Oh, and don't worry. It took me forever to figure out where everything was on DOA. I'm sure I kept the Mods busy having to move my threads all the time. :sweat (Sorry Mods) After you have been here for a while though you will get it.:)

      Hugs and best of luck!

    51. it's a resin doll-... yepp ^^

it's a soony from luts.. this is my first doll.. and I never strung her.. althou I should need to her strings are actiong up.. but I need how to otherwise I won't be abel to put the arm off..*_*

    52. Here's a link I found for unstringing a doll. It's a Volks, but the ideas are the same, plus it has pictures! I'm going to be away for a bit, so I hope you can find the info you are looking for. I found this link by typing in unstringing tutorial in the search space at the top of the page. Good luck!

      link http://shineblitzon.com/broken/tutorial/string1.html

    53. Just to add to that, there is a series of video clips I found on youtube that might be helpful as well. Here is a link to the first one.

    54. My sister's doll just fell and his nose chipped, what should we do?!

      Pictures:

    55. If you have the chip you can glue it back on with super glue.

If you don't have the piece, or if it got crushed in the fall, you can give him a nose job by sanding the chip down with 320 grit sand paper, then smooth it with 400 grit (or a 3m 'fine' sanding sponge).

    56. where can I buy that?

    57. Lowe's, Home Depot, perhaps even Wal-Mart...just a place where they sell hardware and stuff.

    58. I hope it all works out well.
I do need to give you a little warning ;3
Ive seen super glue eat away resin several times when i was experimenting glue on resin for my glue mod.

I still haven't found out exactly what is causing it (the non eating had the same ingredients :/)
But i thought i would let you know ;3

    59. I think sanding is the way to go...no worry about glue. let us know how you get on, thankfully there is no face up so nothing to ruin there. Scary thing to happen I am sure your poor sister!

    60. I'd say sanding is probably the better bet since a chip off the nose would be pretty obvious, but remember to look up sanding threads and learn what precautions you need to take! Breathing resin dust is bad for your health! If you're in any doubt about how well you can prevent the dust floating around, I'd say stick it back on with glue or find someone who is confident that they can do it properly and safely.
