Did you know that if you heat it for a short amount of time it becomes pliable? IT DOES! And if you position it differently, it will go back to it's original shape if heated again? IT DOES?? And did you know this is a great way to make some new hand positions for your dolls?? IT IS!!! Just be careful - I bent one of the fingers back and heated it again about 6 times and it started to form stress cracks... but now I have a CP hand that's giving people "the finger" LOL!!!!!!!! I put the toaster over on 450 and then put thick socks on my hands so i could touch the hot resin, then I put the hands in the over for about a minute or 2 (that's all you really need) and then forced the now rubbery fingers into the position I wanted. Then I held them in that position until they were cool enough to stop moving back into place.
It gets VERY pliable, but not really squishy. You actually only need it in there for about 10-15 seconds now that I tried it again with another hand. make sure you have some sort of protection on your hands and then bend the fingers where you want them to be and hold it. When it gets REALLY soft it becomes rubbery, but still maintains it's shape ^_^
Zevchan. You. Rock. So. Hard. That is the most freakin' badass thing I have ever seen. I am so contemplating doing that with my Ari's "peace" (blah) hand. God, that is just the best.
I'm almost scared to ask how you figured this out ^^;;; Was it an accident? Or did you just know it would do that . . . . Anyway, the one giving the finger is awesome lmao I could so see my boy doing that. Hmm . . . might buy some extra hands in th future and give it a try.
Hehehe, thanks ^_^;;;; Actually, I got a second set of hands that I already had in the mail today and I thought I'd experiment. I know that heat makes pretty much anything pliable, so I turned the toaster over to 450 and tested it. It works really well, in all honesty - just be careful to position the fingers in a natrual looking way - I just reheated and repositioned the fingers on the El hand above because they didn't look natrual enough for my taste ^_^
omg!! that teh awesome! eek, now i shall have to get extra hands and....do something nice and creative (and lewd ) for my lishe!
Zev, I LOVE you. I'd been really debating getting another pair of hands from DoD when I order my boy because - as cute as they are, they're not really hand positions I'd use for my dolls every day. ^^; But now that I know this - I'm totally there!
Have you tried using boiling water to dip the hands in? I know that works well on vinyl. Leenie
thank you for sharing your wonderful discovery xD that's so helpful.. and I'd die to see a doll flipping off the camera..ahaha
It's definitely a good option of something to do with those angsty El-hands people keep complaining about. ^^
Hmmm....I wonder if it works with Volks resin, or if it would damage it...? **ponders** Well, I guess that settles that. Next time I see a pair of beauty white Volks SD13 boy hands on YJ I'm buying them. ..... .... Yeah, like THAT'S going to happen. ...I don't suppose CP boy hands will fit on a Volks SD13 guy? Or would they look too weird? Anyone have one of each and willing to switch the hands so I can see?
Woah, it's a toasted hand! Dude! I thought heat would make it crumble like a vampire in the sun, but it makes it pliable before it does that, eh...? Wow, they look like they were sculpted to flip the bird... ..... This whole thing with the toaster compells me to share this: http://www.illwillpress.com/toast.html
that is so incredibly neat! eek! now I need to procure an extra pair of hands to mess with, as I'm a little wary about doing it on any of my dolls' defaults... I don't know how difficult it might be to replace Blue Fairy, SDC, or Secret Doll hands. still, though, one of my dolls, current or future, _must_ have 'flipping the bird' hands someday.
LOL. That was great. And apparently my dog doesn't like the voices - she tried to attack my speakers! (should be noted she is a neurotic Border Collie, who chases shadows on the floor and licks the walls for no reason)
Wow, that's so cool! And so funny! One of these days, I'd love to find an extra pair of BF hands to try it out! Oh...I just had a thought...if you heated up a head, could you shape elf ears, or push around the features of the face...like make an upturned nose or something?
this is freaking fantastic! I have so many hands now for CPs. most of them are beautiful, but a few are only usable for a special photo op. I mean, that Lishe pinky - really. many thanks!
That's actually pretty kewl, but I'd be way too scared to try. x3 I'm notoriously clumsy, and my luck, I'd end up with a bunch of fingerless stumps (including my own).
The "birdie" is hilarious! I'd love to see one of your dolls with it on hehe. Somebody should do a hand with the "rock on" symbol! That'd be so great for all the rocker bjds out there! lol Is there any way you can fix the stress marks on it though?
hahaha... I love foamie... this made me think of the amityville toaster (same thing a couple other people said).... that hand is the most awesome freaking thing ever!!!! I'm tempted to order another pair of hands so I can do soemthing like that... how cool!
First off, the hand thing is awesome. I don't know what I'd do with it, but it's awesome. And I also wonder what would happen if you heat up a head. But, I don't think anyone has enough money to even want to try that. Also, Amityville Toaster rocks. I just watched it twice.
I really think this is super neato. But I had a query! (I do want to do this for Saoki's hands. She has beautiful little fingers, but the position is just kinda, bluh..) Did you place them on a cookie sheet before putting them into the toaster oven? Did you put tine foil over the sheet if you did? Would a conventional oven be okay? (I mean.. it should be.. it's just a bigger version of the toaster oven.. ) Thank you for sharing this Zev. and I too am curious about the faces... but maybe you could pull toes farther apart to make tabi-sock wearable feet...eh, eh? Provided they're seperated toes to begin with. Heh.
Alright, so I tried posing a hand in the toaster oven... BF Tiny Fairy girls have a wild pinkie finger that sticks out in a cute way I guess. But it just started to bug me lots. After seeing this post I became very hopeful that my Emilie's pinkie would fall in line with the rest of her fingers... so... I bit the bullet, put everything on the line... and here are my results: here's what I did: I used my toaster oven set at 430 degrees F (as high as it would go) I covered a cookie tray with tin foil once the oven was hot I put the hand in for a minute and 45 seconds. After that period of time the hand wasn't as pliable of Zevchan's hands, but it was pliable enough for me to alter the pinkie. HOWEVER!!! the resin yellowed slightly. I think that perhaps putting it in the oven sped up the natural yellowing process. The only yellow parts are the fingertips. My guess is that the places that touch the tray get more yellow OR thin bits of resin yellow faster than thick pieces. The rest of the hand is pretty much the same colour as the rest of Emilie's body. Sooo... would I recommend doing this? If you are a perfectionist, then no. If you can deal with the yellowing... then go for it. I am considering blushing her hands and covering the yellow with a pink or something. I am also considering e-mailing Blue Fairy and begging for a pair of boy hands! ^_^ alright, I hope this was helpful! and here's more pics of the finished hands:
Thank you for posting Mel. I don't think I will do this with Alice's hands. I'm paranoid about yellowing, and I'm super picky. But I do like what you've done with the Tiny Fairy hands. That pinkie before could have put out an eye.
You know, I just thought of something. Do you think this technique could be used to make flat feet into high-heel feet?
I have a pair of extra beauty white Luts hands that I'm considering playing with... I'm curious to see if the coloring yellows as much. If I do, I will post before and after pictures.
Is a toaster oven the same as a regular oven? I only have a gas oven. I have lots of extra hands (yay CP!) that I would like to try. I have an angel Soo that is just pointing & it drives me nuts! Thanks! Anna
Hmmmm....I don't know if there's much you could do with the "pointing" Angel Elf Soo hand. I've got one, and looking at it all the fingers but the pointer are attached to the palm. I guess you could make it into a fist, but IMHO that's even less versatile than a pointer. But then again, I like the pointing hand because to me it seems like a 'come hither' hand as well.
I guessed something like this would happen with heat. I think it's the Luts under resin we have to thank. Hands already closed...or fingers stuck together...you might have to use a knife and kinda cut them apart. Who's brave enough to try this with a Volks doll? XDDDD
I was just wondering where this tpoic got to! I want to try it with my Kei's hands since they're so boring looking. ops:
XD You're gonna start a hand-buying craze - or maybe you -did- rather 'cause this is an -old- post XD.... I'm thinking about buying extra hands now.. I can just see the looks my mother would give me now when I stand with little hands in the oven.
I'm going to try the boiling water approach to the extra hands I'm getting with my doll. It's in the mail, and thanks to customs it might be a month or so before I gett him, but then, the boy is getting a metal-hand and a finger flipping one. He's going to be a rock star. All I lack now is the day-old stubble and the JD bottle (although all the ones I have been in contact with swear to Jim Beam...)
Omg, I love the birdie hand!! I heard that Camines come with a pair of extra hands and if that's true, then Jody's definitely getting a birdie hand. It would SO go with his attitude! Would this work in a conventional oven? Thanks for showing how you did it! P.S. Foamy!
I plan on doing that once i can get my paws on some spare hands... Making all sorts of stuff with them. Kumiko-chan can be very rude sometimes.... Or just funny.
Well, since this post has been dragged back from the dead, I can now add my two cents. I wanted to do this over a year ago with my spare set of DoD hands, but I didn't have a toaster oven. So I used... ... ... a hair dryer. That's right, a hair dryer. It wasn't easy, believe me, but it worked. What I did was take my hair dryer, put on the extra nozzle-type end that focuses the air, and turn it on high. I then took the spare hand and stuck it into the nozzle (not into the dryer itself, but into the end of the attachment... it's about a centimeter wide at the end). I held the hand there for a while because the hair dryer isn't hot enough to make the resin bend easily. I burnt my hands several times with hot air. I screamed obscenities at both hands and hair dryer. Eventually, the hands got warm enough that I could bend the fingers, They weren't hot, nor were they overly pliable, they were just warm enough that I could bend the resin a bit. I did this repeatedly because they really were just BARELY warm enough to bend, but I suppose you could hold them in there longer and make them more pliable. While this does work, there are a few words of caution-- 1) DO NOT STICK THE HAND INTO THE HAIR DRYER ITSELF. This is a bad, bad idea. Mostly because you never stick things into a hair dryer. @_@ 2) Use an attachment to focus the hot air and put the hand DIRECTLY into the hot air coming out of the dryer. Without this, there's not enough heat on the hand. 3) This takes a while. Several minutes, in fact. They will barely be warm enough to bend, and you'll have to do it over again to make any major progress. 4) Because it takes so long, there's a pretty good chance that it won't work for big modifications, like moving fingers from straight to fist. It WILL work to move fingers a little, such as if you want them slightly more or less curled. I don't know about yellowing other types of hand, but it didn't change the color of the DoC hands at all, nor did it cause them to crack (note: these are old DoC hands, from 2004, so this might not be applicable... as with all doll mods, be smart about it, and expect screw-ups ). This isn't the most brilliant or functional idea, but it works for those of us who don't have easy access to toaster ovens (like us collegiates -_- ). Yay hair dryer mods!!
Wow! I wouldn't have thought a hair dryer would work.. at least I'm pretty sure mine won't since it's one of those dinky travel ones. *gah* I was debating using the heat gun Mom has for her stamping craft stuff, but just haven't worked up the courage to mod the hands at all (^_~) Thanks for posting! I really need to try this.. I've got all these "excess hands" for my boys... I really need to figure out what position they need to be in!
I just tried it with my DoC girls hands and now they look much more natural^^ silly me didn't have any socks for the heat, but it was only reeeally hot for like the first few seconds then it was just plesantly warm^^;;
anyone tried this in a conventional oven? (I don't haver a toaster oven) Also, anyone tried the high heel feet technique?
The ever-talented zoi_no_miko customized this Luts hand - If I remember correctly, she used the boiling water/steam method.
Hehe this is a great idea!! I might use it to get rid of my Lishe's pinky of doom! Uhm, exactly how do you do it with boiling water? Do you dip the hand in it? If so for how long? Or just place the hand above it so it gets steamed?
sorry I don't think so because though the resin softens it won't actually melt like regular plastic ( it would burn first.)
I haven't even gotten shipping confirmation on my doll yet.. XD But I just modded my first hand! I just know that Rooster is going to need a 'swearing finger' hand as soon as he gets out of his box~ Since the hand was a sleeping Chiwoo left hand, and the middle finger was a little bent and had to be straightened, it's now.. well, from the side it's ridged where the knuckles are XD But it looks fine from the back, and that's the main thing! I think I might sand the finger down eventually, if it does give me problems. Thanks to everyone who gave tips on this thread~! (I used the boiling water method, btw)
can you tell me how long you left it in the boiling water for before it became soft? Was the water still boiling on the stove or did you remove it from the stove? (i know the boiling water method works for perming doll hair- put a straight hair on rollers or braids for longer waves, not curls)
I boiled the water in the kettle ^^; Then poured it into a bowl and hung the hand on the edge using the S-hook. It didn't take long at all for it to start to soften up.. About a minute, maybe less, though once you're taking it out and putting it back in again a lot for the various fingers, it's definitely less. I just kept positioning the fingers until I liked them, then finally ran it under cold water to get rid of any lingering heat once I was happy.
Hee~ I modded a hand last night xB now I have a Shiwoo "peace" hand (Swearing?! Naaah.. xD;;; ahaha...) There's a slight split between the joints on one finger (I'll post pics later); but I'll just gloss them up and blush 'em a little and make them into papercuts - they're right in that really annoying place papercuts always occur anyway... XD;; Either that, or I'll fill them in later, but for the timebeing the papercut idea seems easier. ^^
Hands~ Scara: *looks at hands in mild confusion* o.O; .... The small cracks in the resin. They're not quite done yet, but meh ^^; I'll finish them tonight, hopefully.
Does anyone know if this is dangerous or toxic? Since the fume of resin is toxic and the fine powder is not good for the health... I'm a bit concerned. So if you put the resin in the oven, can you still use the oven for cooking? Is there a smell after it is heated?
