Hair that Looks Real

Apr 18, 2006

    1. I'm looking for wigs that look more like real hair as opposed to perfectly styled. If you remember where the wigs are from, please post that and a little about the wig (frizzability, etc.). Thanks, guys!

    2. I really like mohair too...(though synthetics are getting better and better!)

Here are two of the Dollfair mohair wigs (beautiful, smooth curls, and not too frizzy even after some handling!):

    3. Mohair is *definitely* the way to go to achieve that 'realistic' look. I love this mohair wig I got from Audrey's on Vincente:

    4. Question from the mohair uneducated: I don't suppose mohair can be straight?

    5. I never thought I would be at all interested in mohair, since I associatied mohair with those very whispy styles - which looks very good on the right doll but isn't for my girls.

But, well, let's say you have all broadened my horizons! Thank you! :whee:

    6. Wow, those are insanely beautiful. Especially the bottom photo, it has such, I dunno, pre-raphaelite qualities. Just amazing!

    7. I'd LOVE to revive this thread.
      So I will.
Anyone else have any "wigs that look real"? :*

    8. Necro thread!

In my opinion, the most realistic wigs are those that use very fine, Kanekalon fibre, such as Monique (Monique picture thread here). The fine hairs make them closer to the what hair would look like at this scale. The disadvantage is that they tend to produce flyaways. However, if you are prepared to invest time taming them with a dab of water and a bit of hairspray (don't get it on your dolly) they can look great. Another advantage of Monique wigs is that many of them have "skin" partings, which look like the scalp showing through, rather than the edge of a piece of weft, which is what can happen with cheaper wigs.

      Good luck.

    9. Oh my!! The moinque wigs are really quiet gorgeous! =D

Yes, Mohair can be straight! I made wefts, then ironed them out, then sewed them into this wig. Tibetan Lambswool "mohair", hand sewn.

    11. I have a girl in a Monique Ciara (sp??)... I've gotten several comments about how real her hair looks...

I have this same wig in black too...oddly, it's not as realistic as the brown imo....

    12. I think Dulcie's wig looks like real hair, tangles and all (which is part of her character). I made it myself out of natural-colored Suri alpaca locks I bought on Etsy.

I think this wig looks quite realistic--it's a Kanalong in color Summerset, from JpopDolls. Their Elodie and Mouse style wigs are also very realistic looking, with thin, soft hair.

    13. My boy's mohair wig (in 'milk tea' colour, from BBD) looks quite realistic:

    14. ocean-girl: Those tiny blonde curls are absolutely perfect!

wildwoodflower: You did an excellent job making that wig. What did you use for the base of it?

    15. How long can mohair generally be? I love it, but I always think it would be too short.. I am looking for a wig that will fall waist length, wavy, on a 62cm doll.

    16. I've found that quite a few fiber wigs look pretty real. And the best part is that the flyaways add to the realistic effect, considering human hair (Unless perfectly styled and hair sprayed) naturally has flyaways:

This is a leekeworld fiber wig:

    18. I'm fairly certain it stands for Blue Blood Doll.

    19. Jpopdoll wigs are perfect for realism, especially if you're looking for long. They're pretty much the same as Monique Gold Label wigs, only with some different style and color options. Short, long, straight, curly ... plenty to choose from. Most of my gang wears these wigs.

Also, the downside of mohair is, while gorgeous, it's usually dyed to achieve different colors, which means the skin cap is dyed to, which tends to transfer to dolls pretty easily and stain their heads unless you protect them with another cap of some kind. Since skin caps already tend to fit the head snugly, that extra tightness makes it harder to adjust the wig, get it on and off (and if you're using a silicone cap, the mohair tends to stick to the silicone and makes it messy, meaning it needs washed off often).

Unless the wig is very dark, Jpopdolls (and Monique) uses wig caps that tend to be skin-colored or white so they don't stain the doll's head as easily, since the caps usually aren't dyed to match the fiber (there are some exceptions to this, but not many). Plus, they're super-stretchy so can fit numerous dolls. For example, my Yo-sized dolls and MSDs tend to share the same wigs, since 6/7 fits them both nicely.

This wig is called Elodie and the color is caffe ice. This and Jpop's other wig called Mouse (which has no bangs) are specifically wefted and cut to make it look as natural as possible on a doll. Especially those very tiny dolls where anything other than mohair or fur wigs just look too thick and bulky on their heads.

Monique Faith (which is waist-length; I just have it pulled back in this pic)

      A mohair-look fiber, Jpop's Winter Angel

      Same style, different color

She's wearing Monique CiCi and he's wearing Jpop Kana long

Jpop Mouse on a Pukifee. Trouble with these wigs on a tiny is they are very long. They'd have to be trimmed if you didn't want the Rapunzel look going for you.

Same wig on an SD. Falls to her waist.

And a Monique Ginger, which has loose curls and also falls to her waist.

And I'll stop there, or I'll be here all night. :)

Short hair time - I think this mohair wig from Sadol is pretty realistic.
