While puting to gether my MSD kit I got some super glue on his arm. Is there any way to get this off besides dansing I already tryed a little of that and only managed to get scraches on his arm where the glue is not a problem and the glue does not seem to be moving at all. What should I do?
Try acetone. I know when I stick my fingers together with supe rglue, I rub nailpolish remover on them to help get it off. I'm not sure if it would work, but it's worth a try. Edit: I googled "removing super glue" and it said that most places that sell super glue also sell a solvent to remove it. They also suggested nailpolish remover. Good luck getting it off. I'm sure you'll find some way to do it.
Did you try seeing if you can find a super glue solvent? I think they sell them wherever they sell super glue.
Okay, so I gave Phaerie a new faceup today and finished it off with eyelashes. I'd had problems with Elmers glue so I decided to try superglue instead. Well, I had her upside down putting the eyelashes in and when they were finally in I went to try and take her headcap off to put eyes in. But it won't budge! It turns out that while I was putting superglue on the rim of her eyes, it dripped down inside her head and ran along the edge of her headcap, so now her headcap is stuck tight onto her head! I don't know what to do to get it off- someone please help me!
Hot water. Like.. Seriously hot water (not boiling, though). It should loosen the superglue up barely long enough for you to pry maybe a butterknife in the headcap and pop it off. Also maybe non-acetone nail polish remover. I'm pretty sure that takes off superglue at least a bit. I'd try it first before the butterknife.
I hate starting new threads but I desperately need to know how to go about doing this. I applied eyelashes to my girl's eyes with crazy glue about six months ago. Last month, I attempted to remove her face-up and the parts that were covered with glue residue would not come off at all. I need to remove this residue or I may go crazy. I've tried everything short of sanding and soaking the head in nail polish remover. She is a Luts Angel Elf Soo, so I'm a bit wary of putting her head in a tub of polish remover as I've had bad experiences with it before and don't wish to go through it again. So I would like to know your opinion. Does anybody think sanding it off would be a good idea or if it would even work? I'd like to try, but if it doesn't work, then I suppose I'll have to sell the head and get a new one. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
You do have some options. One, there is a product that is for debonding the glue, (wonder full stuff when you glue your fingers together). most hobby stores should have it (ones that have rc cars and stuff). Though I have no idea what the effects on resin are. Another option is if it is a small area, you can probably scrape it off carefully with the edge of a razor blade or exacto-knife. If you can get the blade under the glue it might come off if that area was sealed well. though the glue might have eaten it's way through the coating. Thinners usually do not effect grazy glue all that much I think. Depends on the strength of the glue I guess. Sanding the glue off would work, and if you take your time, and go slowly it would work. you could try sand paper, or small diamond grit detail files.
Oi crazy glue? Next time, use white glue like Elmer's school glue or tacky craft glue. Its removable. I had a doll come to me for a faceup with some sort of indellible glue holding the eyelashes in (and sealing a lot of the makeup). I literally cut it away with an x-acto blade and then sanded the entire face. I don't suggest it if you're not comfortable with a blade near your doll's eyes, though. Edit: Oh, and you don't have to sell the head. You can send it to someone else that's more comfortable with the removal process. I offer minor repair services and would be willing to take her in at no charge if you're willing to pay shipping here and back.
Do be careful with using a blade, as resin cuts quicker than you might think. Otherwise, based on everything I hear you would be very happy taking cheshiretiffy up on her offer. She's great to deal with.
Would you really do that? I'd like to try and see if I can't get it off myself first, as I think I should learn at some point to take care of her head myself, but if I can't, I would love for you to do it. I'd totally be willing to pay shipping and handling back and forth, I'm just glad that I got some help with this. Thank you all for your suggestions and tips!
I have someone doing a face-up on my doll right now that has crazy glue & I ordered the very fine abrasives from Volks so she is going to sand it off lightly. It will work in my case because she is re-sealing the entire face-up when done... not sure for a couple of localized area.
have you tried using 100% acetone? do not soak the dolls head in it, and don't leave it on the head for long, you also need to rinse the head very well with cool water afterwards. acetone removes finger nail glue.
I have had horrible experiences with acetone on my girl's head and I've taken a vow to never use it again. I had been using it before blindly and never really realizing the extint of the damage that I was doing until one day I took her face-up off and noticed white stuff had formed arounf the corners of her nose and ears. I sanded it off and continued on my way. The next time I removed the face-up, her ENTIRE BOTTOM LIP had turned white and a chunk of the edge came off when I bumped it with my nail. I didn't even realize that it was melting her resin until someone pointed out on another thread for me the other night. Now I've got to wait until I get a job to purchase a new head and sell the old one(after I've sanded off the white and the glue residue). So learn from my tragic mistakes, I've learned all of this the hard way. By the way, can anyone tell my what grit of sandpaper I should use and where to get it? I need some to remove the glue and probably a finer grit to smooth out the affected areas.
I like 400 for surfacing. Its personal preference, though. Some people like to take it up past 1000 for a super smooth finish. For the super glue, you'll probably want to start around 250. Get sandpaper or sanding sponges at hardware stores or at wal-mart.
if ur careful and no how to handle it it's ok. u just have to be fast. if u have a really fine paint brush dip it in 100% acetone and brush it lightly only were u need it. give it a few seconds and then sprinkle baking soda on the dolls face all over the dolls face. that's stops the acetone from eating anything. then wash off ur doll's head. and the crazy glue and lashes should come off. just got to be fast
I stupidly used superglue for my nari-pon's eyes, and I've tried everything I know--alcohol, nail-polish remover, and even de-bonder from junkyspot.com--the eyes won't budge! Somebody please help! thanks, Tambra
so the eyes are superglued into the head!?. I'm surprised the debonder didn't work. Assuming the eyes are acrylic. Besure to wash the head well after trying the debonder, not sure what the effects can be to the resin. I'm not really sure what else could be used that would not harm the resin either. I fear you may need to wreck the eyes to get them out, cleaning the surface of the resin of the glue will be hard since the resin is porous, the superglue likes to wick right in. Hope you can get them out.
I got a pureskin SD head recently whose eyelashes were superglued in. The stuff is awful and should never be used to put in eyes or lashes... or anything that might be removed someday! The only way I could remove them was with an exacto knife, chipping away at the superglue bit by bit. This was very tricky because the lids were so thin on this head, one wrong move and an expensive doll would be ruined. I eventually got the stuff outta there without damaging the head, but it was scary. All I can say is good luck.. Raven
since all that didn't work, i think the only way out is going to be physical instead of chemical. try hacking (carefully!) away at it with an exacto or a snall knife. :< be careful. superglue's nasty.
Actually there is a much much easier way to get them out. Superglue gets very brittle below freezing temperature. Put the head in the back of your freezer overnight, then start tapping sharply on the front of the eyes with the handle of a table knife or a very small hammer. You might have to refreeze the head a couple times to make the superglue let go, but that should get your eyes out.
I don't know how safe it is, but once I had accidentally been holding a very much broken bottle of super glue and thus my fingers were stuck together. The way to remove it was to go out and pour a little bit (NOT liberal amounts) of grill starter fluid and let it break up the super glue. I don't know how it would react with resin. You might try a bit of the fluid on a q-tip and just swap the glue until it is broken enough to pull away. It's very flammable (that's what it's meant for, after all) and pretty heavy with some fumes so don't lean above it while working on it. I have absolutely no idea how it reacts with resin, though it will get it off your fingers in about 10 minutes.
Victoria--it WORKED! I put my nari-pon head in the freezer yesterday for a few hours, took it out, tried popping the eyes out--NOTHING. Put more debonder in, let it soak in--NOTHING. So I sopped up the debonder with a cotton ball, then put the head back in the freezer OVERNIGHT. Just took it out a few minutes ago--and POP! The eyes popped out with a slight nudge of a sharp knife--careful not to knife the resin; it WORKED! You GO girl! Thanks so much! Love, Tambra
Okay, so today I tried to remove my DoC girl's face-up. It was about a year old, sealed with MSC UV Cut. She had eyelashes applied with nail glue. Where the eyelashes were the paint WILL NOT come off. At all. Like everywhere the nail glue was. I tried using Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer. I tried 100% straight acetone (which I scrubbed her whole head thoroughly after doing) and that didn't work. I tried Dawn soap. I scrubbed at her for 40 minutes. Literally everywhere the nail glue was the face-up (which there was black paint) will not come off. I had heard that the glue was safe to use for eyelash application. Help? Should I sand? Just spray over it and do a new face-up with it there? --- Edit: And yes, I know Acetone is horrible and have had slightly bad results with it in the past. I figured in it's might dissolving-ness it would get rid of the glue and stuff. As we can see, it didn't.
As far as I know, nail glue is similar to Superglue, and won't come off easily at all. You might have to resort to a light sanding in those areas. White glue is always the glue to use to stick eyelashes....( or any glue that's water soluble).
You might just have to lightly sand with very fine sandpaper, wrap it around a popsicle stick for better grip and slowly one pass at a time sand. I never use nail glue for lashes. I use the glue that comes with fake lashes or white glue. Make sure you wash the head with soap and water after the acetone so it doesnt continue to work. If you didnt already know.
Yeah, I washed big time with soap and water after using acetone. That stuff actually scares me. How fine of sandpaper do I want? 800 grit? 1000? only 600?
Depends on how thickly you put the nail glue on. The thicker the coating of glue, the more you'll need to sand it. If it's just a thin coating, I'd probably try 800. If thicker, I might go down to even something like 400. Just be very careful to only sand away the glue, and not the resin as well. That's the tricky part.
Wouldnt it come off if you put it in the freezer? Like superglue comes off when its frozen. Idk you would have to research more on that :]
O-O Nail glue?! Oh lordy hon, good luck with THAT. I second the sanding because after having your nails done, when they are removed they do file the surface of your nail to get rid of all the nail glue left on there and even it out for either reapplying or just so your can not have crazy looking nails. I do nails, and my god I hate the glue for that stuff, it's permanently adhered itself to my nail table. Sand carefully, you may be able to use a very thin piece of a fine nail file to do that, since all nail files are are sandpaper on some hard foam and cardboard. They're quite bendy and easy to pull apart. Don't stick one of the metal ones in there though, you might really hurt your doll.
With glue, before sanding, Id try both heat and cold: First try the fridge method, and see if you can peel it of, Then try the hair dryer method and see if the heat makes the glue melt. After that has failed, id try sanding.
Superglue will not melt when heated-it's pretty much cured into a hard plastic by this point. You would melt your doll before you melted the superglue off.
Go with the freezing option first and see if you can peel it off. If not- go with Karie's idea and use a nail file to sand it off gently.
I'll go with the freezing option first and see what that does (probably tomorrow). I have sandpaper ranging from 100 to 600 or 800 grit, though I can't remember which. So if freezing doesn't work then I'll sand.
If the freezing doesn't work and you have to sand... Don't use anything rougher then 400 grit! especially around the eye area. the shape can change very easily. When sanding anything I tend to use 600 or 800 first. I break out the 400 when the 600 doesn't seem to be going anywhere. certain brands have harder resin then others. So always start with a smoother paper instead of going strait to the rough stuff. After getting the gunk off i would lightly go over the area with either a 1200 or 1800 grit. I recommend the 1800 because you can get it in a cloth and the cloth can be folded up and is very flexible so it can get in around the eyes easily. Good luck and if you have any questions about sanding feel free to PM me.
Thank you very much, tofu! I just tried getting the glue off via freezing. I got a tiny bit (not much) but the stuff that bothered me the most and was the most visible. I'm going to *try* and sand now, so we'll see how it goes. I'm terrified. The highest grit that the local craft store and all other places carrying stuff of that nature is 600 so I'm going to start with that. If I want anything higher I'll have to order online, but that's perfectly fine if I need to. Leekeworld seems to carry VERY SUPER FINE grits, so I can order from there when all else fails.
I've been able to find very fine sand paper at places like hobbytown USA. I don't know if there is one near where you are now...but there is one in PA (where your location on your DOA name says you are most other times of the year)
Yeah. I'm in PA now too, just not Pittsburgh. I'm in a little spit of land in the middle of godforsaken nowhere >.< In Pittsburgh I could probably find what I'm looking for! XD I'll have to see where hobbytown is. I've not heard of it before though... I started out with the 600 and just wasn't getting anywhere and worked my way down to 150 grit. I did manage to get a bit with the 150, but I quit after I started to smell resin, so there's still a lot of black there. I then went back to the 600 grit but didn't really get any more with that. I tried removing that again with Winsor & Newton but it wouldn't come off. I'm debating whether to move on and sand more or just say it's good enough since it'll be painted over anyways...
~.~ i guess no one mentioned the importance of using a mask.....As long as you can get a majority of it off you will be putting a new face up and eyelashes over top of the lines. It's just nice to have a clean slate when doing face ups. also, i was wondering if you ever let the head soak in the winsor newton cleaner?
I know the importance. I decided to ignore it. I'm horrible like that XD (I figured as long as I got the glue I wouldn't get the resin, so if I could smell the resin I would know that I got the glue. Besides, freshly sanded resin smells good! ...yeah, a lot of times, I do deserve what I get, like sick for example) And no, I didn't let it soak in it. Do you think that would help? I had dipped a soft bristled toothbrush into it and then scrubbed.
I've been known to let the head soak in the cleaner for a couple of hours. A friend of mine suggested coating the area and letting the cleaner sit for a while on it. (if you didn't want to soak it in a bowl.)
I still suggest that in lieu of fine-grit sand paper, use a nail file, one of the large ones. Those are literally a very fine sandpaper on a stick. It will work just as well, and are easily found at any drug store or dollar store in the make-up and nail polish sections. They're smaller and they're much easier to use due to the shape and size (meant to be held in your hand after all* and might fit into the dolls head better.
Have you tried Pepboys? The one in my area carries very fine sandpaper (1800 iirc) in their auto paint section. If you don't have a Pepboys nearby, try any of the other auto parts stores.
Well... I had tried to post here earlier. Mistral's soaking in Winsor & Newton at the moment. She's been for the past 2 hours. My Dad works at a car shop so I'll see what all grit sandpaper they carry there. If he can't hook me up with something nice... he used to work with this lesbian who he hated (he's homophobic >.< ) and then she quit there and is now working in a car shop right across the street from where I'm working, so I can see what she has :3 And... when all else fails look around the shops in my town (there's like three, but two of them are kinda sketchy...) RESULTS on the soak in Winsor&Newton: It's almost entirely off! After about an hour or two in it the (now black) glue started to peel off on one eye. Not so much visibly on the other side. But then after 4 hours of soaking I took her out, pulled off what I could of the glue with my fingers, and then took a toothbrush to the rest. It's almost all entirely gone! I'm debating whether to sand more or not.
Yay for you!! I just dont understand gluing on lashes with superglue - its so hard to get them to keep still and white glue (PVA/tacky glue/PVC etc...) gets a nice tack on it that hold the lashes nicely while it dries.... make for absolute certain that you wash off the W & N brush cleaner as unlike acetone it wont evaporate off and turns to goo when its left to sit and dry-out... its not pretty!!
I really scrubbed it off! (I had scrubbed the acetone off too). Next time I do lashes, I'm definitely using tape or regular white glue! (and at the time, I had no idea that nail glue was basically super glue... I was never really into the whole fake nail thing)
Nana I am so glad it's coming off. I always use glue used for human lashes. It has no oil and it can be peeled off and it dries really fast. You must post photos when your doll gets their new face.
I will! She's got part of a face-up at the moment, but I'm not liking it much. I'm debating whether to finish it and see if I like it once it's done or to just remove it and start all over again.
LOL - I did the same thing, I guess you mean the latex-stuff in the tube that usually comes with people lashes right? I stopped using it when the eyelash glue stuck to my eye putty... had to keep re-gluing them on... Stoked you got it sorted out too.... Superglue = BAD, PVA/Waterbased glue = Guuud
I cannot believe I ever thought it was a good idea but a few years back I used super glue on one of my dolls to hold the eyes in. *sweats* Now I have no idea on how to remove it. I was using acetone (another bad idea >___<) to be rid of access glue, too bad its not working all too well for me (it is making the face-up disappear) What should I do? I need baby steps on how to get things done, since I've done wrong so far. I feel so bad for my doll D:
Try putting the head in the freezer for atleast 10 minutes. That should loosen it up some if the acetone isn't working. Or soaking it in really warm water for a while.
I'd second trying the freezer to get the eyes out, but you'll almost certainly still have extra glue stuck on even if it works. I think there was a thread in the emergency section about removing nail glue used to hold eyelashes on that might have some helpful tips in it.
It seems that the glue is too stubborn. I had let that stuff cake/lay in the eye socket for way over 4 years. So far not so good.
When I glued my IH Cocori, Kira's mobility joints together with something similar to crazy glue, what I did was I "combined" both those methods. I first put her legs in the freezer for 10 minutes, then took the legs out and tried seeing if I could pull the leg from the joint. It didn't work so I left it for another ten minutes then I let her get room temperature again (just holding the resin warmed it up a bit) and got a bowl of warm/hot water and soaked for like 20 mins. (not too hot, just what I would take a shower with!) PS - all throughout this process I tried to keep pulling the joints apart - with no avail, but I think it loosened the glue a bit. Then - this part isn't recommended considering it's a face you're dealing with - I took a flat screw driver and tried to get it between the two parts and kind of kept "nudging" the glue until it finally pulled apart. I don't know what effects this had on the resin but it certainly worked for me, and I had her joints glued together for almost 2 and a half years! I hope you can get the eyes out
If you used superglue (cyanoacrylate), I think there is a chemical you can get in hobby stores that dissolve and loosen the glue?
There is a super glue remover, but I don't know if it will have any effect on the resin. If it's possible to put gentle pressure on the eye from the front rather than trying to pry it out from the back I've had good luck loosening stubborn hot-glued eyes that way. Sometimes all it takes is getting one small surface area to separate and the rest will follow.
