Vayne is the son of a famous alchemist who died several years ago; he was found living in the forest, being raised by a cat, and invited to the world-renowned Al-Revis School of Alchemy. (See also the PS2 game Mana Khemia-- spoilers). His age was given as 16 on entrance because he has no memory before a few years prior; the only one who knows about his past is his cat Sulpher, who isn't telling.
