Using Temporary Transfer Tattoos on Resin Dolls

Dec 11, 2004

    1. Hellloooo!
I need tips for applying tempory tattoos to your doll and how to keep them there! LOL!

I tried to put a small pretty rose on Marius's Back last night and it looked great! Until we realised that even thought we coated it with MSC it was peeling off....

How do i get it to stay?? Any ideas??

If i cant get it to stay i think ill have to paint it on... and i'd rarther not do that! LOL!

      Rachie

    2. That's interesting, because I've not had that kind of trouble. You need to clean the area well soak the back of the tat with a sponge and leave it for about a minute, but I'm going to assume you did that? I then coated mine with MSC, and then a gloss varnish. I use tattoos from sunie.com, if that helps?

    3. Mine are from Sunie.com too!
Hmmm... maybe i just didnt do it right... I'll try again i think... Maybe it will work out better!

      Rachie

    4. If you have MSN, I can talk to you about it on there? I managed to put a huge thing on my boy's back, so your rose shouldn't be a problem. Is it one of the glitter ones? They tend to crinkle more than the other ones, I find - and that's what causes the peeling. I cut them out, and use my Volks sponge to smooth them out, and then I leave them for a while.

Edit : I just remembered you're in the UK XD *is a dork*

    5. Nah i dont have MSN.... but i have Yahoo messenger...??
Yeah its a glitter one... I didnt realise it was glittery when i bought it tho! LOL!!

      Rachie

    6. What you could do, is put it on, smooth it, leave it for a minute, then peel off the paper, then LEAVE it. Don't touch it for a few hours. By that point, it should be completely dry, and you can gently brush off some of the glitter. THEN coat it. Wait a couple of hours. coat it AGAIN. Wait two more hours, then gloss it, if you wish.

No-one said dollfie-collecting didn't teach me the art of patience!

    7. LOL! Ok.. ill do that!

      Thanks for the help!! :D

Im sure Marius will apreciate a tattoo thats not flaking off ever five seconds! LOL!

      Rachie

    8. Did you manage it? XD

    9. Sort of.... I havnt re-applyed it. Ive flaked off all teh loose bits and painted them back in with acrylic paint. It looks great!
Ill have to get some pics and post.....

    10. so i was wondering the other day...i know that one can stick fake person-sized tattoos on our BJD's, but i wonder, does that cause the resin to become discolored? like is it darker where the tattoo blocks sunlight or something? what about regular painted on tattoos? does that also leave a mark? thanks!

    11. I have both, and I've not really tried removing them, but I would imagine that any staining or marking could be removed with a little sanding. I usually coat my doll a couple of times before applying a tattoo, so there's an added level of protection.

    12. thanks much! :D

    13. Update on this - I recently removed all of my boy's tattoos. The painted ones came off fine, but the temporary ones were a NIGHTMARE. The glue they use to bind leaves a gunky residue which is a pain to get off. I was left with black streak marks on my boy. If you're going to use temporary tattoos - make sure you coat your doll well before hand and try to find something you can live with for a while!

    14. It might depend on what kind of tattoo you use. Ive used Anna Sui tattoos without any harm done. One I left on for a couple of months, and there was no staining whatsoever, and it came right off.

    15. I'm thinking it's mainly the kind with the glitter- they have that extra bonding to keep it in place? It was mainly glue residue causing me problems, and it spread the dye about.

    16. :? What should you use to coat before/after you've put on a temp tatt????

Also, does anyone know where I can get an SD size tatt of a seahorse and a mermaid????

I'd like my Saskia (Soo Delf) to have the same tatts as me

    17. I would think MSC would work well (or any of the alternates people have found).

I used it on Yukio's tattoo (but I also hand painted mine after sketching it out in watercolor pencil on his back . . . .)

    18. how safe for resin would those tattoos be that you put on with water?

    19. I've heard that they're safer than painting, though you'll want to coat the body part first. ^^

    20. you don't have to coat. my boys have fake tattoos and they are uncoated.

just take yoru time make sure the surface is DRY, and don't rush it.

    21. i have a ton of them, i used to buy them by the dozen when i was in school. they are going to make my boy quite spiffy.

    22. I've wanted to try that myself too, but there are some things that I've been thinking about.

In human skin they turn very dirty in a little time. So I've wondered if the same thing happens with dolls? And I've also thought about the 'invisible' area around the tattoo, can you see it when it's on your doll?

    23. it gets 'dirty' but not as fast as on humans.

it is invisiable VERY well on the dolls.

    24. Either way, coat first. Not all fake tatoos are created equal ^^; so best not to risk it.

    25. i think i will just to be sure, alot of them are from the dollarstore, and i am a little paranoid about them because of that, and i planned to coat him anyway.

    26. They are NOT safer than painting. They're easy to put on, and they stay on quite well, but they are a BITCH to take off because of the adhesive. It took me four hours with my beauty white boy, and then I was forced to sand to remove the last of it. My painted tats come off in three minutes or so.

    27. Ahh~! See, I'd heard the opposite... as soon as I started talking about painting on Tatoos, I got referred to a thread where acrylic black had stained a BW CH boy.
Maybe it depends on the brand of fake tattoo...?

It makes sense to me that paint on an arm should com off as easily as paint on a face....

    28. I think the glitter ones are the worst offenders... they have the extra gunk to keep the glitter in place. I usually coat two or three times, then apply the tat, then coat two more. That's for both fake and painted tattoos.
I use acrylic black all of the time - it's like, my most used paint. And I'm guilty of not thinning enough! XDXD My boys have never stained yet. :)

    29. I use ones from a dollar store. and such. no glitter / shiney stuff.

and it comes off VERY easy with acetone. wipe it off with acetone a lil soap n water. and ta da no harm done

    30. the above was me

    31. I left one on uncoated for about 3 weeks, and it just rubbed off with my fingers. Nothing else was needed, and nothing stained. Maybe something in them reacts with the coating to make the colors bleed through and stain.

    32. I used good quality chinese lettering tattoos on Takeo back and look absolutely AWESOME.
They look hand-painted, and are very clean and haven't gotten dirty or rubbed off at all.
I need to post pics soon.

    33. Hi!
Where did you get the chinese lettering tattoos?
      Thanks
      Steph

    34. A good method for tatoos is using Expert's -chioce clear decal film. It's ink- jet friendly. You can scan, design via photoshop your tatoo design, print it ,clear coat it, then apply it.
There's another product called "micrsol" that melts decals on like paint around curved body parts. After the decal is applied it should be coated with MSC.

I will be doing a tutorial on this as soon as I have designed Pris's tatoo so if anyone's interested, stay tuned!

    35. Wow, inkjet decals? Where can you get this stuff? :o

    36. COOL! :D that sounds awesome, I'd love to be able to design him one.

    37. I'm lucky enough to get it from my local hobby shop (Funny,I hang out there and talk, but all the guys don't know I work on dolls, and not planes and tanks.)

Here the web address for the company:
      http://www.bare-metal.com/

They have lots and lots of super fun stuff! Rock on!

    38. I got them in a tattoo booklet a long time ago, I can find the name on the booklet if you like.

    39. Hi Again,
Can you give me the name of the booklet that you used for the tattoos?
      Thanks
      Steph

    40. what if you don't want to get rid of the tattoo?? can you still keep it on without it coming off? will coating prevent it from coming off if you can? *_*
      philion

    41. I gave my boy 2 fake tattoos for the hell of it  I used 2 coats of MSC over the top, and they're holding quite nicely but I think a good scratch on something would chip them...

Anyone have a more secure suggestion? More coats? :daisy

    42. Has anyone ever used a temporary tattoo on their dolls?
For those of us who can't draw it seems like a good? idea.
I know the back side is coated with some kind of glue and you wet them to apply. Normally on a human they would wear off in a few days, but I don't know about a doll.
I wouldn't mind it coming off, I wouldn't want it to be permanent, but what if it wouldn't come off?
The directions say it can be removed with 'mild alcohol' but would that damage the resin?
Also I'm wondering what would happen it you sealed it?
      Any suggestions/expierence with this?

    43. as long as its not applied directly to the resin im sure it would come off with whatever you prefer to use to take your faceups off so just spray with MSC first...because even on normal skin they come off with washing

    44. i've heard of others using temporary tattoos. and for the most part i think it's worked.

      some things though:
      1. it might leave a little edge around the design where the glue is, unavoidable. the biggest problem would be with this would be the lines around the tattoo (which are clear) but they collect dirt after a while.

      2. always coat underneath it. just to be safe

      3. if it won't come off, first try soap and water and sponge. then resort to alcohol only if that doesn't work. rubbing alcohol shouldn't hurt the doll but if you do coat it there will be a lack of coating where you rubbed it off *_* if all else fails you can sand it off

      4. check the tattoo to see if it's got any oils or ingredients that are meant to soak into people's skin, since they would also probably seep into resin.

i've never tried it but once Spy comes i'll try and draw some (which will fail miserably) and then i'll probably go and try some temporary ones.

it should be fine, just be smart about it

      luck to you!

      ~Dottie

    45. I am not talented as far as painting etc. I was curious if anyone has ever used the rub-ons that come in the craft departments, as tattoos? There are a few that could make reasonably good tattoos and since they are totally flat, they wouldn't look like decals or anything once they were coated.

    46. That's a neat idea. I don't think I've heard of anyone using those - just the temporary tatoos that are made for human skin. My suggestion is to buy one with a lot of colors like black, blue, and red (the colors most likely to stain), put it on a spare hand, let it sit for a few months, then try to take it off and see what you get. That's just me being super paranoid though. XD

    47. I think it would be fine as long as you coated before you put it on.

    48. Thanks, I think I will give it a try. It should be easy to remove also, if I make sure to coat well.
      alaska

    49. it does work! A friend did a full tattoo on her doll's back that way, it looks gorgeous~~

*edit* Oh wait~ I thought you meant rub-on/temporary tattoos. XD well, they work at any rate!

    50. They are probably made of the same things anyway. I can't wait to try it!
      alaska

    51. I've used them on my Unoss and my CP Shiwoo and they work great, cause you don't have to soak them in water or anything. Just spray a coat of Mr. Super Clear over them and tada! instant tatoo. :)

    52. I am not too sure about this, but I seem to have heard that evildolly's Temperence's tattoo is one of those temporary ones

    53. Just wanted chime in and say Elfdoll sent me rub-on's with my doll to use as tatoo's, so I think they are safe! ^_^

    54. Resurrecting an ancient thread to ask how other people put the tattoos on- I'm a bit confused as to how the spraying with MSC method would work, because wouldn't the paper end up MSC'ed to the body, too?

Or are other people using water to transfer the design first, then coating over it?

I'm planning on a doll with elaborate tattoos, and doing it with temporaries would save me a lot of time.

    55. I believe people use water on the tatoo, then peel it off, THEN spray it ^^ temp tatoos work on almost any surface with water, so msc just preserves it.

    56. well, there are these things that work similarly to temp tattoos, but they're mostly for paper and sometimes wood and such. You don't have to wet them, you just have to hold it onto the surface and rub the heck out of the back to make sure the design has stuck to the paper (or whatever you're sticking it to) then you carefully peel it off. Most of the rubbing designs I've seen are letters, rub-on caligraphy if you will.

Edited for this here link: http://www.beldecal.com/rubon.cfm This should help explain them better and show some different designs they come in and different crafts they're used for. Just for a better idea of what they are. ^__^

    57. i assumed that would be ok to do because one of the girls from SOOM comes with temp. tattoos.

i would just cut them out really close to the edge of the design so you dont get that weird, clear, shiney outline that temp tattoos have.

    58. So, wait, confusion XD A small wet tattoo would be safe for the doll? I've got some Tribal ones that my sister adores for her MNF Shiwoo, but I'm not sure if they're safe or not, and she won't really let me experiment on her doll >>

    59. I am a bit concerned about staining, especially since I know dolls with body blushing need their blushing repaired frequently, and I'd have to try to remove a scratched tattoo to find it doesn't come off.

I'm curious about trying to remove them in general.

I think perhaps it would be best to coat the doll first, and then apply the tattoo, to minimize chances of the color seeping into the resin?

    60. Hi!

I just recieved a set of Volks Dollfie Tattoos from a friend, and I have no idea how to use them.

I know they are intended for the Volks Dollfie Plus type dolls.... but seeing as I have a resin girl on the same scale, my friend thought I would like them.

The instructions are in japanese, though.:sweat

      Any ideas??
