Sewing Sewing for Fairyland Minifee

Feb 21, 2011

    1. Cute sppaaammm X3

Okay so, I had a go at my first ever MSD shirt last night~ I'm teaching myself without patterns or anything and my mums sewing machine hates me so it's all by hand :XD: This time I learned how to add a collar, ooooohh~

It's not really her colour but it's all I had to practice with :XD: *so proud*

    2. Wow, I got more response on sewing than I thought I would...thanks, guys! All of your advice was extremely helpful, I just have to actually use it now. XD I'm sewing entirely by hand, so I get bored/tired a lot, haha. But I'll definitely post some spam when I finish. :)

Also, awesome spams are awesome! Everyone is looking fabulous, no joke! :D Also, eldawyn, where did you find such lovely lingerie? Your girl has always been beautiful, but that set really fit her, and the setup is gorgeous!

    3. Wow! By hand?! I'd die.. XD XD

I just don't the patience or skill to sew in a straight line without my machine! Hehe~

    4. Ooh I sew by hand, it's so relaxing ^___^ I find a good way to make the stitches straight in running stitch is to line up your needle with the stitch you just made and then push it through and up to create the new stitch.

    5. Ooooh! I guess I never took the time to sew by hand, went straight to a sewing machine~ XD XD

    6. I'm taking sewing lessons, and I love it! I can't wait to sew clothes for my dollies! Right now I'm only working on a dress for my daughter, but when I get better I'll do a lot for my dollies~

    7. I just learnt to sew as a kid by hand so I guess it's second nature - you don't want a 6yr'old using a sewing machine o.o Sadly my mother's sewing machine and I have arguments. We call each other names... I'm sure... so I currently make my doll's clothes by hand hehe >.>

    8. @sundaes: :XD: I know what you mean about fighting with sewing machines! I can't use sewing machines for anything but sewing pillows and blankets, and they generally just intimidate me. :sweat Thus I do all my doll sewing by hand, too.

I really need to do my taxes and see if I can get a MNF, too! Since I went to see Tangled in the theater last month, I've really been wanting to get a Ryeon to turn into Rapunzel. ;)

    9. About 5 or 6 years ago my aunt loaded all of these japanese BJD Clothing pattern mags onto me. about 3 years ago i got rid of them because i was like "These are taking up space i wont need them". Now i guess I do need them =| However, I have been cosplaying for some time now so I guess I could make my own clothes for the doll... but i've never worked tat small before! So I think i'll buy something so I KNOW she can wear it whilst I procrastinate!!! Procrastination Has become my friend!

I think that the next time i get a Fairyland Minifee girl I'll do it a la carte. I dont like the look of the cutie legs =|

    10. @elizaveta: That's situational irony for you! :sweat

I would say if you have the time now, definitely practice sewing for your dolls, because the sooner you start practicing, the sooner you'll get better at it! :) And even if you don't think you're making progress right away, the more drafts you make and the more things you try, the more things you learn so you can improve for the next attempt. I've spent three days and three drafts on a dress for my Pukipuki, and I'm about to start over and try a fourth. :XD:

      ETA:
@Amet: Whoa, what are those on your boy's neck? At first I thought it was pretty necklace, but on second glance they look more like wounds!

    11. Whelp, that'd be because they are. Ilya is an undead demon-y guy. He was hung. Those are his rope burns.

(And that'd be why you don't see him so often, because I know he's very "Oh hey, pretty--WAIT WHY IS HE BLEEDING?" He's just the only one who wears that shirt!)

    12. Oooh look we have our own minifee sewing thread XDDD How cool are we? XD
Yea mum's sewing machine is old as, and she thinks that it's been serviced badly or something because every time I use it, it disagrees with me, and every time Mum uses it she gets in a really really bad mood. lol !

This is the skirt I recently hand sewed for my Temperance.

    13. I just started my second sewing class. It's all about tailoring and it's tons of fun. So I'm not in the least bit afraid of a sewing machine just not always sure how to go about putting things together.

I can post the kimono I made for my Aislinn (finally named). Even though I need to make it a little tighter in the shoulders it came out great considering I was making it completely blind without my doll home yet. I'm working on some undies and a kilt type skirt right now.

    14. i cannot use patterns i find them so over my head, so i tend to make it up as i go along lol....i put these together for my little nell (minifee Miyu) over the past few weeks

    15. D: I had no idea there was an entire thread for sewing for a MNF. ALL my sewing goes towards MNF's!! xDDD

I shall be posting a new outfit soon then that I'm working on for someone. :D

    16. ! ;^; You're selling your Lisheeeeee! Your photos of her are what made me decide on getting a Lishe ;~;

      Back on topic. >.<;

That shirt is really cute *o* I think I'm jealous you made pink and purple work together.

Lots of cute Minifee clothes in this thread. O: O: O:

    17. @candy kitten: Wow, all those dresses are really lovely! Even though you said you don't use patterns, I'm wondering if at least you could share how you made them. :) I'm curious about the top one, though, the black and white stripy one. Is the ribbon just threaded through some lace trim to have that criss-cross effect?

    18. Hmmm, a new thread ... Looking forward to seeing lots of pics of handmade outfits !!! And old spam in old but I wanted to contribute something to page 1:

    19. Cross posting this quote from the MNF because it makes me super excited! I want to try this out. :) I've been wondering how they make those shirts and it now seems super easy. Also super excited we have our own sewing thread! I have a thousand ideas I want to try and seeing everyone's sewing inspires me to actually try to figure out patterns in my head.

    20. I love this, a sewing thread just for mnf. I went shopping this weekend and got some new fabric for my incoming rheia. She already has lots of clothes from when I owned the sculpt before but now I have these really cute red and white shoes so I found a white fabric with little flowers. I also want to make her a really poofy crinoline. Now just waiting for her to get here.

    21. There wasn't before we uhhh went OT in the Minifee thread /guilty look
      Teheee >.>
I haven't used patterns yet either candy kitten, i kind of just draw out the shapes and sew them to size... I only just started mind you O_O and I can't find many doll patterns.. maybe I'll just make my own patterns O_O
Your dresses are really cute! Do you hand sew or machine sew?

    22. I do both. Sometimes it's nice to have a pattern, sometimes it's more fun to wing it. If you're going to wing it however, I can't reccomend Ragdoll's 'Anyone Can Sew' tutorials enough. There's one for shirts, pants and jackets/vests.

    23. FilthyWarumono, I totally know how you feel! /lurk
Ban Sidhe, I know right! My mum totally freaks out when I do it but I think she's learned that I know what I'm doing... sorta ;D or at least realised I like stuffing up and finding things out for myself.
Amet, that looks kind of like how I sew O_O Hold stuff up to the body, snip snip, sew sew... I'm going to lurk this thread now, it looks good!

    24. wow this is cool!
I sew alot for my minifee, mostely cuz her style is specific

    26. I had a pretty productive day. I tidied up a crochet tube top and finally stitched the last parts of some undies for my girl. So even though I'm no closer to my vision of an elf ranger, she is decent even under her kimono. XD I'm not sure about the make it up as you go method, I like to start with directions. So I like using patterns the feel of precision they bring makes me feel more comfortable. But I think once I learn a little more from my sewing class I'll be making my own. And FilthyWarumono in the fourth picture down, your boy looks like Rum Tum Tiger from Cats. I love it.

    27. Ooooooh SO many pretties!! Gorgeous work kpatillo & Filthy Warumono :D
My poor Tempe's clothes (and Tempe - she got a wipe down) had an accident with some green cordial today so they need washing... I think I might make her a dress so she is not naked in the meantime.
... but she is currently nakeeeyyy.. eep ><

    28. LOL I never thought of that outfit as Rum Tum, but I definitely see it now. xD
      Thank you both~

Sundaes, get to sewing then! xD

      Cross-posting a commission I finished, yay!

    29. A sewing thread just for minifee? This is totally awesome! I just pulled out my sewing machine for the first time in months and have been working like crazy on perfecting a pair(s) of jeans for my girls. I've almost got it but I think the fabric I have might be too thick, or my pattern too bulky, I'm not sure yet haha. We'll see what tomorrow brings, hopefully I'll have pictures to share.

    30. Okay, okay, I have to ask. I am not SUPER familiar with sewing machines, but I know enough to know that the tiny hems required on doll clothes must be next to impossible on a sewing machine. HOWEVER. I notice that a lot of people do use sewing machines, so how do you do it?! D: Want know!

I ask this, of course, because I sew entirely by hand (rather badly) and it makes even my best clothes look a bit like crap...>.>

    31. Inverinate - there's a thread in the sewing forum on how to make your sewing look more professional that has tons of good information. Things like using a clear foot on your machine so you can see your edges/curves etc, and also tear away stabilizer and pressing everything. I'd send you the link but I'm on my phone at school right now... Let me know if you can't find it and I'll pm you the link when I get home in a few hours.

But it is possible for mnf! It just takes a lot of patience and time. Go slowly :)

    32. Yay, thank you, karrigankat! :) I really love the clean lines from machine sewing, but the only thing I could think of to make it possible was making the seam normal people-size, and then trimming them off...but that seemed awfully wasteful...

    33. Home from class early! Yay for being one of only 4 people to pass the last test and therefore not needing to review...

Here is the link for the thread I was talking about. I thought I had a pretty good handle on tiny seams etc but after reading that thread I'm ready to take off to equip myself with some better tools XD

    34. Been doing loooads of sewing/knitting for my dollies recently, especially for my MNF boys! Echo's whole outfit in the photo was made by me; last night I made the hat to match the shorts, though it'll just have to serve as a prototype/practise- it needs to widen more next time as it's a bit of a squeeze! The hat to his left is the one I used for reference, and the arm behind is Cou, who's also got a partially made outfit on. X3

    35. Statuess - wow, agreeing with Amet, I'm so envious of anyone with knitting skills. A friend of mine tried to teach me once, but she's French, and learned to knit from her very French grandmother, so her trying to explain this to me in her not-so-great English was... yeah... The fact that we were in a car at the time probably didn't help either!

Ban - Lucky #7 seems to be it! I can officially say I'm happy with the way my jeans turned out! Now to make a few more pairs while it's all still with me, and then hopefully my girls will be good for bottoms for a while!

Crappy cell phone pic is crappy

    36. I love the functional pockets! Did you happen to draft a pattern you could share with the rest of us? Even better if you have one for a waistband with belt loops! ;)

    37. Thanks Ban! I'm pretty impressed with myself haha. Been tinkering with it more this afternoon (of course... I can't leave things alone) because I did want an actual waist band. Almost have that sorted so will have more pictures tomorrow after work hopefully. I made one attempt that turned out pretty good but then tried to improve it on the next attempt and somehow stuffed it up worse haha. I think I'm over tired.

Deefos - I sort of have a pattern drafted. I'm far from professional but once I get the pattern to a point where I can successfully make jeans from it without needing to alter anything I'll do my best to share it with you guys :)

    38. Thanks guys! :) I learnt to knit when I was younger but had to relearn recently haha. I really want to know how to crochet, but my Mum doesn't know that so we might learn it together sometime!

Karrigankat, looking forward to seeing that pattern of yours! ^^

    39. Using this tutorial: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/sh...s-you-can-make

I made a dress for my girls:
It's my first doll dress! And all sewn by hand (you can tell) Once I get some more fabrics I'd like to make others. Even though it's a little shabby I'm proud of it :) Sorry for the weird headless body, both the girls are getting their faceups presently. I'll take nice photos when they come home :) This helped eat up the time while they are gone.

    40. Today I have sewed such complete set for my girl

    41. (Completely none sewing related) Leksa I love the table and chair set!

Hehe the set is very nice. I'm impressed that you found fabric like that with such a small pattern! My girl needs under things. >.>

    42. After talking to the owner of the Patterns for LittleFee group on Flickr, I started a Patterns for MiniFee group, too. Please, if you've sewn (or knitted or crocheted!) for your MiniFee from an available (purchase or free) pattern, will you upload pictures of your work, and reviews of the pattern? Thank you! :D

Here's a picture of my Evie in the Adams-Harris "Wonderland" pattern, which fits MiniFee beautifully!

    43. That's your first time? You did a really great job! I think that color looks nice on her, it adds contrast to her wig. I made both of the outfits for these two: (please excuse the lack of wig...I haven't quite gotten around to ordering them. :sweat)
      [IMG][IMG]

    44. the dress is not finished because my shushus bust will be a tad bigger than my ryeons so im waiting but I made this for her hopeing she willcome home soon, the neckline wont be so low when its finished
      [IMG]
and i made her a shirt too
      [IMG]

    45. it's not the best pic of the pants but I made Amy some leathers and a 'suede' sheerling jacket :)

    46. Just a bit of "in progress" pic of the outfit I'm working on for Aria.

    47. I've been working on this. It's a spring fae dress I sewed using fabric flower petals. I used a blind hem stitch on the whole thing. I'm thinking about adding something to the waist. I'm also going to add some more to bustle on the back.

    48. If you could find some really tiny fabric flowers to go around the waist, that would look lovely! There are some flowers small enough even for fairies, of course. ;) It's looking really great so far!

Ban Sidhe, did you use real leather? Any tips? I have loads of scraps and a few ideas...

    49. goodness no - I got the double sided fabric, which is probably a type of moleskin, at Joanns (a big fabric chain store here). I made one thing out of actual suede once ... a RealPuki tunic, don't think I'd do it again ;)

    50. I personally think flowers on flowers would look a little excessive... but tiny glass seed beads and some embroidery accents around the waist might give the impression of pistils and anthers poking out of the petals. :)

    51. Thinning out wardrobe = more fabric to chop up! Made some leggings and bubble shorts from a stripy top.

The leggings were intended for Katura (Shiwoo), but they turned out a size too small. He'll wear them anyway, though! XD Echo was just dragged into modelling the shorts (mostly because I wanted him out to finally hot glue suede him...).

Does anyone have tips for photographing full body shots of dolls? I always just end up frustrated by my results... (And I don't have a nice studio setup.)

    52. that looks great, i love the purple and stripes together, for photographing, I would backup and use your zoom to get close, you dont need a nice studio to get nice pics, also try looking for natural lighting instead of flast. there is a photography section on here with lots of helpful tips :)

    53. Hello Minifeers! :) I don't own a MNF yet, but I do plan to order my Woosoo within the next few weeks. To ease my waiting a bit I made this little ensemble for her, and thought I'd share. <3

    54. Just got done sewing this outfit for my new Rheia Kess! Also made her headband, bracelet and necklace. Enjoy!

    55. WH00 Long time no posting.

I'm working on a Dante commission, lucky for me the person owns a MNF A line so Prophet gets to be the lucky model. xD

I still need to make the belt, and then start the intense jacket, plus make a sword holster, the whole nine yards. Wheee~

    56. Does anyone have a link for, or can provide, detailed measurements for the Minifee A-line girl body? I know there's some measurements on the Fairyland site but they're fairly basic, and not really enough to wing it with making stuff. My Rheia's stuck in customs for I don't know how long :...( and even though I can't make her wig or work on her face-up, I can at least maybe try to put together a skirt and sweater for her.

Edit: The measurements I think I'd need are the circumference of the upper arm at the shoulder, and also around the arm at the elbow and wrist, and the length from the armpit to the hip. I think I can probably handle doing a skirt from the waist and hip measurements from Fairyland, and there's enough arm/shoulder/etc. measurements to manage a sweater. Can anyone provide the four measurements I need? I'd greatly appreciate it!

    57. Hi! You can find all the measurements at this link: http://www.calicodoll.com/slopers/mnf1.pdf
      Hope it's helpful!

I made another outfit for Kess today since I had the day off.

    58. They are perfectly in scale. I think I'll have to go hunt down some 11/0 beads now. :) Thanks.

Is the little blue cuff bracelet made of the same sort of thing? It's wonderful.

    59. Thank you! The blue cuff uses a very different technique with turquoise chips and tiny 13/0 seed beads.
You can find 11/0 seed beads at your local Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

    60. I have spam to share :) Here's Cleo in the dress I made her yesterday. I'm trying to perfect this pattern - the problem is, every type of fabric needs tweeking due to differences in stretchability etc. The fabric I used for this dress is very nice but has an aweful tendency to fray silky fibers :( Gonna have to make sure I really secure the edges next time.
