How to lengthen a short neck?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. I was hoping someone would have some advice on how to permanently lengthen a neck on a doll.
I want to put one company's head on another company's body, but the body's neck is very short because the heads have a very shallow socket for the neck. If it turns out that I can't just fill in my head's socket, is there a way to lengthen the neck instead? Would Apoxie Sculpt be strong enough?

    2. I took moleskin, the thick cushiony kind, and put it on the bottom of the neck hole. That seemed to work for me. :3

    3. If not, apoxie sculpt should be strong enough. I have it filling my Gena's neckhole so she can sit on a DD.
It is difficult to exactly match the colour... and it would be hard to paint/blush because of the high-rub area. I'd search for another alternative if I could...

    4. Hmm, Twigling mentioned elsewhere (ear mods) that she kneaded acrylic paint into the Apoxie to tint it. I've never used it before, do you have to glue it to the resin once you've shaped it or does adhere on its own?

    5. It sticks on its own very well. Its hard to get the color right, though.

    6. It is hard to get the colour right, but it doesn't matter so much on the neck if the modded part is mostly covered by wigs and the socket at the bottom of the head. I would consider sculpting onto the neck instead of inside the head. In fact I am thinking about doing something to thicken up the neck on my Lishe body one day....

    7. I recently bought a Thaasa body for my SD head and didn't think to go for the long-neck version, not realizing how short the neck is on the regular body. I'd like to have a longer neck for her, but I can't afford to buy another body and I really don't want to go through the hassle of trying to sell this one to rebuy the right version and blah blah blah.

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is - Is there a way to make the neck longer that works well? Thaasa has an adapter extension for CP heads, but it won't work with an s-hook head. Are there any other neck extenders out there?

Making a "doughnut" of Sculpey was suggested, but I'm not sure how that would work. Any other suggestions/advice/ideas?

    8. I don't think Sculpey will work. It will not withstand the constant pressure, and may stain your resin.

Can you put pictures of the neck, head and extender? I'm thinking it is a bad idea to add to any area that will take a lot of pressure constantly, and maybe you should think about modding the head instead.

    9. Looking at that, I almost think it would be easier to sand the head to fit the adapter, than it is to add stuff to the neck. As long as the resin on the head isn't too thin after sanding.

    10. Celesse, I know you've solved your problem, but I wanted to add a point to this thread, in case someone else might find it useful.

People were pretty vehement about the uselessness/risk of Sculpey earlier in this thread, but . . . the Sculpey doughnut idea does in fact work, if you bake the Sculpey so that it's hard (baking directions are on the Sculpey package). No staining, no squish, just a nice solid custom-made neckpiece that can be sanded to perfect the fit, if need be. I made one for my Domuya Regular body, because the neck was a little stumpy for my Migidoll Ryu head, and it works just fine.

    11. It took a couple of tries to get one of my doughnuts out of the head in one piece so I could bake it, but . . . after that, it was all downhill! ;)

Of course, there's a limit to how much neck height you can add with something like this, because you don't want the Sculpey piece to show under the chin, but still, it's a simple and pretty effective mod. The best part, for me, is that it doesn't make any permanent change to the doll, in case I should ever decide to sell either the head or the body.

    12. I want to put a K-doll head on top of a CP Mod. Girlbody, and i know that the keck are to thin! So do you think i can make the neck thicker so it fits the head by using putty?

    13. I know this sounds seriously mad and doubt anyone EVER did this XD

I have a domuya body which i would like to increase the length and thickness of the neck. ERM madness you think?

If possible, should i use RESIN SCULPY or epoxy putty?

    14. Does anyone have any photos where they've succesfully done this?

I'm making a hybrid and everything is perfect except the neck length! It's much too short (over 5mm) so this seems to be my only option.

    15. some very good ideas, this could be really usefull

    16. If anyone has photos of modded necks on any of thier dolls, this would be much appreciated. ^^ I am curious to see the final result of these techniques mentioned above. <3

    17. This is an old thread, but I'd love to see any examples of these techniques.

    18. I extended the neck of one of my dolls with epoxy. I put a couple straws in her neck hole and just put the epoxy around that, then did a lot of sanding once it dried. I haven't gotten around to airbrushing it yet but her hair and a collar necklace hides it well.

I can take pictures if anyone is interested.

Edit: actually, she's in my icon. Nothing shows!

    19. It is possible to tint Apoxie. But it is tricky. To keep a workable curing time, I tinted only one part (Part A, I think). Then you have to take into account that when you add the other part, color changes slightly again.

And don't tint it too much, because then it may become chemically changed that much that it does not stick any longer. The curing time is also considerably shortened, so you have to work faster.

I modded my Granado's thighs with tinted Apoxie. The color match is not 100 % (I can live with it).

Perhaps it is a good thing to make a color test first. Even it means to waste some Apoxie.

    20. karlykitten, would you be able to take some more photos? I'd love to see some other angles, as well as the neck without the head on it, if you might have time to get them! :D

    21. Here goes! Please excuse her eyelashes falling out and my nails being a chipped mess!

      Front view. Nothing shows.

More to the side. Epoxy shows a bit.

      Head off, crudely sanded.

      Top view!

And here I tried pulling it to the side so you can see the hole. I had four small straws in it, which I put the epoxy around. The strings fit perfectly in the shape they made!

    22. Thanks, karlykitten! :D I can see that they fit well in there, that's actually kind of cool! :D So, I haven't really done any additive modding yet; do you have any tips or things you noticed while you were doing the lengthening?

And lol, sidenote, I have that cat bottle wine too!!! :XD: I have an orange and black one :P

    23. Add the epoxy bits at a time, test the length, then add more! I ended up with twice as much epoxy on there as I needed and it is /not/ easy to sand! My dremel ran out of batteries twice before I gave up and papered the rest of it :C

And haha, I always adored these bottles! I wish I had thought to start collecting them long ago, I love things that come in multiple colours.

    24. This is an old thread but I wonder if anyone else has extended a neck and has pictures to share. Or any kind of method or tips. Would it be better to sculpt straight on or is it possible to make a removable piece?

    25. @Datsuki

Making a removable piece might make it fit a bit strangely, as that would basically just be adding an additional joint to the neck and you'd need to deal with that moving around possibly. So my vote would be for sculpting right on. I posted into this thread ages ago, but somewhere along the way I did lengthen and widen a neck along the way, and I did that by sculpting right on the existing neck. :) I have photos somewhere, but I don't seem to have them on my PC (they might be on my Instagram somewhere :sweat)

    26. I fear you're right... I'm just scared to make such a permanent drastic change :XD: I think I'll make a rough in stickytack so I can get a feel for the length needed. I'm concerned with the colour difference too. It seems it would be hard to do anything about it since it's the neck and it will have lots of friction there.

    27. As long as you properly mix the epoxy, it should be nice and solid, so the friction shouldn't do anything to it. :) Ideally, you'd mix it all thoroughly, shape it up how you want, then refine it further with a rotary or other sanding tools or coarse sandpaper, then even out the finish with slightly higher grit sandpaper, then finish it up with a fairly high grit sandpaper to bring the finish in line with the resin.

The color match you can fix by either tinting the epoxy (which I would not necessarily recommend, as I find that in order to get the correct color, you need to add way too much paint, which affect the chemical structural integrity of the epoxy, so it doesn't cure as well), or painting overtop it. Painting overtop does have the chance to rub and wear, but if you use suede or faux suede in the neck socket, that should fix that right up. :)

    28. Ahh yeah good point with the sueding, I should try that! I've done mods with apoxie before but as you say I didn't like mixing in colour to it. I think I'd be ok to cover it and HOPE it doesn't scratch off!
