Info on: MSC vs Games Workshop Purity seal for doll owners

Jan 19, 2011

    1. Hello all, especially you UK doll owners.

I've got some good news regarding sealant for face ups and doll work. I've been importing MSC since I started doing face ups and as most of you are probably aware its been getting more expensive and more difficult to get hold of.

A friend of mine introduced me to Games Workshop Purity Seal. Naturally I was wary to begin with (as i always am with doll related things) but after experimenting with it myself I have come to the conclusion that its better than MSC.

Purity seal comes in a 400ml can for about £8
Mister Super Clear comes in 170ml can for...£11 and up?

So not only is it better, it saves you a lot of money. You don't even pay to pay for postage as theres Games Workshop stores all over the country. Purity seal is made for resin as its original purpose was for spraying Warhammer pieces. I've had it on various resins I own for prolonged time and its never damaged any of them, its just as removal as MSC.

      info:

      Blushing:
MSC sometimes drains the colour or blasts some of the pastel off.
Purity Seal gives an even coat, blends colours and keeps them at the same vibrancy.

      Ghosting:
Both MSC and Purity seal are fairly temperamental when it comes to humidity and cold. It tends to go white if sprayed in the wrong air conditions. This can pretty much always be prevented by warming the can up and making sure you give it a real good shake. Multiple thin layers are better than one thick one when spraying.

      The best for last:
      Tan/Dark and Coloured resins.
Even when MSC doesnt ghost many of us will have noticed it DOES make heads slighter lighter with each spray.
Its hardly noticable but after 4 coats on tan/dark resin it makes the head lighter than the body by quite a large amount.

Now i'm not going to ask you to take my word for it, i've got a little proof

      before spraying:

4 coats of MSC (this is not ghosting, its just the difference it makes)

      4 coats of purity seal
      [IMG]

      more with purity seal:

I hope this helps some of you :) especially those that have had trouble finding decent sealant for reasonable prices.

    2. I already knew about Purity seal and totally planned to get it for use because I own 3 tanned dolls myself, but this is wonderful news to have definitive proof that Purity Seal does exactly what people had told me it does and doesn't white out the colour of tanned dolls.

Thanks for this! As you say the other great thing about it is the availability, my local games workshop place is like a 10-15 minute walk away. I'm thinking I'll just keep my MSC for back up and am planning to get some Puirty Seal ASAP. XD

    3. Oh thank god. I'm getting a tanned Bernard and I was TERRIFIED that the msc was gonna white out his face.

    4. Huh...that IS odd because I've tried PS on my tan Limho and it was worse than MSC for ashyness BUT, his is a very pale tan, much lighter than those you used it on, so I'm wondering if it's because of that.

Certainly PS hasn't really ever worked as a long time sealant on my NS dolls at all. I found it chipped really easily and the faceups done with it lasted a lot less time than the MSC ones, but that's still better than Testors and it's hideous yellowing/gooeyness so YAY for cheap alternatives!

    5. I haven't had any troubles with PS for chipping or anything, even with full body blushing with it. I can't yet stand by longevity because I generally end up redoing faceups to get them more and more perfect. xP I've not used MSC but it is loads better than Testors. (Yay for having ONE store in the city for me.)

    6. You guys are making me want to go looking for this stuff in the States. I don't like the lightening effects of MSC (and the Volks spray) on dark tans at all!

    7. i have used purity seal for years painting miniatures for my job and have never had a problem with it. i now use it for faceups and love it. there is a bit more "tooth" with the purity seal than with msc on the doll but i prefer that because i feel it helps pastels stick better.

you can get it in the states at your local game store, just check the phone book.

    8. I can vouch for Purity seal even though i'm not in the UK. Any dolls I've painted or had painted with Purity seal have a much longer lasting and less shiny finish. I get a more even coat and no ashiness even on tanned dolls! I mean a few of my dolls have had their faces for almost 3 years and there is barely any wearing even in places that are touched a lot. It has a lot more tooth but that tooth makes pastels stick wonderfully! Now that we use this in our house I'll never worry about MSC again!

I'dalso like to add its dureable and easy to clean up which is a big bonus for anyone who plays with their dolls alot. It stands up excellent against water, scrubbing with a magic eraser and even rubbing alcohol has a hard time budging it. This is the stuff you want for long lasting faceups!

    9. do you know if ther's a way to get this in the US, specifically Colorado? i'm a little fed up with Dullcote but don't want to shell out for a little can of MSC. this Purity stuff sounds great, though.

    10. i put up link up in post #7 ^^;

    11. Another trick for making Purity Seal work in colder temperatures (but not necessarily humidity, I tend not to spray on days when it has rained and such) is to put the can of Purity Seal in a bucket/bowl/pan of hot water. Make sure the water isn't boiling hot, or too hot to touch. You should be able to put your finger in without burning yourself. Leave it in hot water for 5-10 minutes, then take it out, dry it off, go outside, shake, and spray! ^_^ The heat will help the pray be distributed more evenly and also helps the faceups dry more quickly.

      Thumbs up for Purity Seal!

      ~*Mystaia

    12. oh yeah ^^ i forgot to mention that :3

    13. Oh, That's a good pieceof information. I'll be in the UK in spring and this will be on my shopping list!
      Thanks a lot!

    14. I honestly can't stand the stuff as a doll sealant, personally. I've found it goes on way too thick, dries in drips, and then is a royal pain to get off again. Not to mention it yellowed severely after a few months, and the texture is far too rough for my liking so blushing was difficult. It works to hold faceups, and will not harm your doll in any way, but I would much rather shell out the cash for MSC or the like than go cheaper and use Purity Seal again.

For those of you that it works for, that's great! It's always nice to find something cheaper and more accessable than MSC, and more durable than Dullcote! Just a few points to keep in mind compared to MSC if you've never used Purity Seal before.

    15. Could anyone tell me if it's possible to ship this sealant outseas? I live in Brazil and sometimes is hard to buy MSC because most stores don't ship to other countries...

Oh, and another question: does it got any UV protection? This is something we really need here. xD

    16. VulpesPraedatum - i found that the rougher texture means that blushing sticks to the sealant more making blushing easier and more vibrant. And its never dried in drips, you have to make sure you spray from a decent distance away, not too close. If you spray too close even MSC goes drippy. But i guess everyone has different experiences with sealants.

KawaiiCloud- to be honest in my experience any sealant protects the doll from UV to a certain extent (not completely obviously) i've sealed my heliot and hound (both WS) and the sealant has prevented them from yellowing over several years...whereas my unsealed soom Iv yellowed in months.

    17. I think the US version of Purity Seal might be different to the UK one... at least that's what I read elsewhere on DoA. Some person/people also had the experience of Purity Seal (in the US) being really shiny. But I wonder if, again like pendrith said, it might be an issue of technique rather than product.

I find that PS doesn't drip and dries very quickly... but on a few occasions when I sprayed too close or sprayed too long, it was a little bit more "wet". As a general rule... as soon as the face starts to look even the slightest bit shiny, I stop spraying, and wait for it to dry. Then, if I think I might have missed a spot or something, I may pray it again lightly.

      ~*Mystaia

    18. I must admit i think i've heard the same thing about the US version :/ . and thats exactly what i do when mine look a bit whiny, or i do the final coat in MSC.

    19. Just checked and Junkyspot also sells Purity Seal for anyone else in the US who might be interested.

    20. The only can I've managed to find is called "Games Workshop Purity Seal (Satin Varnish)".
Does anyone know if this comes out shiny or matt?

      Thanks. :)

    21. that's the stuff, they only do it in satin now, i think they did used to do matt a couple of years ago but it was discontinued, the satin is not totally matt, but very close.

    22. the one i have is Citadel Purity Seal 'satin varnish'
...but well...its pretty matt. like i said only after about 4-5 coats it goes a bit glossy/shiney

    23. Mine has yet to go glossy on me... this is after about 7-9 coats...

Pic I took: (Please excuse the poor quality, I really need to get a macro lens)

Picture my friend Emma took: (note how the original resin is shinier than the bits sprayed with Purity Seal)

I would have called it Matt not Satin... ;)

    24. wow! 7-9 coats! thats imnpressive. I manage about 4-5 but i wouldnt wanna risk more than that....now i've been proved wrong lol!

    25. Thanks everyone for your speedy replies! :D

    26. To add to this, Im in canada and I get the US version of it, but Ive never had problems with it going shiny UNLESS Im spraying too close. I've done it a quite a few times and made it shiny -_- but only if I hold it too close, otherwise its beautiful! and Ive done upwards of 7-10 coats when doing heavy faceup and color work!

    27. yesss!
I have a can of this stuff and was hoping it was okay to use!
I have the statin (as matt was sold out) but the statin is more matt that bare resin!
so glad! i can use it without worry!

    28. Gypsy Eyes- a very good point, i always keep the spray at a decent distance away lately and its certainly been less shiny! Maybe i was just too close before :3

High-Low- as far as i'm aware there isn't a matt ^^; its either satin or gloss.

    29. I wonder what was meant to be on the shelve then... next to the satin and gloss, I asumed the matt would be! I asumed wrong! Stain is great though ^^

    30. Purity seal is a dream come true ^^
I use a mix, so first coat MSC (i just think the pastel sticks better) then I use PS for all in between coats and last coat :)

    31. I used to use Purity Seal years ago but stopped when they discontinued the matte version. I just presumed satin would be really shiny ^^;

    32. I have just tried this sealant, and I'm satisfied so far. I don't see that tooth everyone is talking about though....it took pastels all right, but in no way better than my MSC (differently though...I'll have to get used to it). I'm glad to report that I experienced no shininess, even when I accidentally sprayed too close and too much - it dried nicely mattish (or more like...the same lack of shine the naked doll head had), and there was no dripping whatsoever.

I'll keep experimenting with the stuff. The most negative I've experienced so far is that the can is so bloody huge and heavy that I find it hard to spray with one hand... :sweat

    33. Thank you for this! I was worrying about finding a source for MSC in Australia, because I have had rotten experiences with Testors... but Games Workshops, they are everywhere.

    34. Thank you, thank you, thank you :)

I have bought myself a can and it is way superior to the Acrylic varnish I was using! I did see some random speckling at one point that made it quite grainy, but I tend to apply thin, quick bursts so a quick buff with a magic eraser followed by a thicker layer over the top smoothed it out fine.

      Here's my girls new look:

I will add to this if I notice any adverse affects, but nothing so far would put me off using it.

    35. Has anyone compared purity seal to humbrol acrylic varnish?

    36. How easy is it to wipe this sealant, should you mess up/want to repaint your doll? I'm interested to try it, but I have a bad track record at never being completely satisfied with a faceup.

    37. autumnrain & Gantaeno- I'm so glad this thread has been helpful for people ^.^ and your girl is looking great Gantaeno.

infinitydragon- ive never even heard of humbrol acrylic varnish, and personally only use sealant thats specifically made with resin in mind. I've got no idea if humbrol is, lol.

Verse- I removed a face up earlier that had been sealed with purity seal. Came off pretty quick with the paint thinner i use. (mr color thinner) so im guessing what everyone else uses would work just the same.

    38. Hey everyone! thanks for the info. I was wondering if you heard of Armory clear matte sealer? Is it comparable?

edit: I found out you DON'T want to use The Armory matte finish, it sucks and its bad for resin. So answered my own question there if anyone else had some. Went out and bought some Citadel Purity Seal today, I hope its much better. However, it's raining today :(

    39. Hey, how long should you leave purity seal to dry? I cleverly threw away the instructions.

    40. I leave mine until you can see it's not shiny any more :)

On the shiny issue, I did start to see some shinyness after a few more coats, but you can easily spray a double-layer top coat and then buff the shine out with a magic eraser or extra extra fine sandpaper. Here's two face ups I've done using this sealant.

I would consider using a top coat of MSC too, if I can get some!

    41. Tetradeka: never heard of it sorry ^^; I'm guessing its a US only thing

evilduck: i usually leave it about 20 mins, sometimes less, sometimes a little more.

Gantaeno: I did work on a tan girl and did like 7 layers on her (because of a tattoo) If sprayed at the right distance/warmth/etc there's no shinyness issues at all. There wasn't even a hint of shiny on her :3

    42. This stuff looks pretty fabulous, but can anyone give me a ball park price/oz. comparison? I'm assuming the can is larger, so it has more in it, but what's the price like compared to Testors? It'd be nice if I could get hold of it. ^-^

    43. I got mine for £7.20 but normally it is £8 for a 400ml can. It was my first time spraying but i'd say I got about 80 coats out of it and theres still a little left. I did go outside though and sometimes it just blew away and I also think I may have done thick coats too.

I used quite a few layers with about 2 starter layers, then 5 or so inbetween then I did around 4 layers after to make sure it doesn't come off. Now i think that may have been too much and it still chips so I think those extra layers did nothing at all.

Maybe purity seal isn't as hard wearing as other sealents? I didn't expect it to chip that easily especially after at least 10 coats.

Also, no shinnyness but I did use pastels on every layer bar the last 4. I thought it gave a really nice finish actually. It really evens out the texture of the pastels I applied.

I'd recommend it for layers inbetween blushing at the very least and perhaps use MSC if you have it for a start and finishing layer.

    44. Yeah... See I'm in america, so I have no idea what your currency translates too in dollars. XD I suppose I'll have to wait for one of the others to figure it out. XD

    45. Theres currency converters online. I use ' xe.com ' for all my £ to $ conversions so theres no need to wait, just go look it up =p

    46. in the USA you can get in here online , or use this to search for a local retailer

    47. £8 is about $12

Glad I found this thread, I was in Hobbycraft the other day and saw the sealant but didn't buy as I didn't know if the Satin version was the right one. Now I shall buy a can XD

    48. Thanks guys. I'm really bad with currency converters, I never manage to do it correctly. XD

Twelve dollars? Wow. Must be a fairly large can. I'll have to nose around Hobby Lobby and see if they carry it. Otherwise, it'll be an online order. Which will be.... inconvenient. XP That's why I don't have MSC or the Volks spray, I hate ordering things like that online. XD I can get Testors here. No wait times.

    49. Very sadly, it seems Australia no longer supplies Purity Seal.

I asked at three different GW shops, and each said the same thing: because humidity can cause problems with it in the rainy Eastern states, and people have complained about ruined paint jobs on models, it's been withdrawn from all states. Living in the driest state, this seems really unfair to me. *pouts*

Can't get MSC either in this state, and I hated Testors when I used it, so I've actually ordered the only Purity Seal I could find online that delivers to Australia... from France. Courier postage costs more than the sealant!

    50. is anyone else finding that it rubs off really quick? or is that just me.

    51. Mine seem okay so far, i'll let you know if that happens to mine too

    52. [IMG]
I did this little ones face + body blushing with it, will report on how well it holds up in a couple of weeks.

    53. I just bought me a can of Purity Seal, very excited to break it out! I've used testors and ZM spray before. ZM spray was a bit annoying because 2 of the 3 cans clogged on me, so I now have half used but useless cans of spray. I'm holding off on the 1 more, testors like all have said, not a lot of tooth, but good for basic body blushing.

I intend to use Purity seal for a heavy blushing of my Minette Unicenta's body she's suppose to have a clydesdale's coloring.

    54. Came to report my experiences: My can of Purity Seal just ran out. I was able to do roughly 14 faceups with it (well, 13 and 3 quarters).

I takes pastels quite differently than MSC so it takes some getting used to - especially with lips. It has tooth, but less...pastels like to slide around on the surface more than with MSC and when I use pastel on top of the acrylics, the next layer of sealant blows off a significant amount. I haven't noticed any difference in how it takes acrylic paint though.

But it's nothing that a little practice can't solve. So overall I'm satisfied with how Citadel works, though I still prefer MSC. But the price difference is more than worth it^^

I always use MSC on top - I haven't found Citadel too shiny (even when I applied thick layers), but I like to be sure that the finish is totally matte. Here are some faceups I did with Citadel^^

    55. I can't see your link :< So I can't help much there. It's just a white tall can with purity seal on it and such. you can't go far wrong.

however, with the grainy effects, are you perhaps spraying in the wrong conditions? that can cause such a problem.

    56. That is the right product. I used it on my Roku and on my friends dolls (until she got her own) and the same for my sis and her dolls. It hasn't had any damage happen to it since it was applied when I got him.

    57. I think I might purchase some of this stuff soon and test it out. My cans of MSC (they're old, but were unopened until recently) are just not working and causing patchyness. I can't afford to spend £14 on one bottle if it's just the age of my MSC causing problems and if this stuff is just as good, if not better I might as well give it a go.

Someone said it's different when applying pastel though, has anyone noticed this?

    58. Yes its different when applying pastel, it takes the pastel much better in my experience so when doing solid blushing less coats are required :)
      Really is great stuff.
