I was wondering..since the older type dolls are more yellow than the new pureskin and pink gals and lads... I was wondering..is it able to bleach a old skin sd that has yellowed severelly..or is completely impossible to bleach the dolls? I was just wondering..since some people used aceton removing stains but..still got white stains..iff ye can get white stains..than the entire doll can be bleached right? Just wondering has any1 tried this before?
Well, I know someone (sorry, I can't remember quite who at the moment!) used Bon Ami and got their doll all nice and un-yellowy.
Lyn (mutehoney) used baking soda on her BW dolls to "reduse the yellowing" at least thats what I remember her saying in her journal. I'm sure if it works on BW dolls it would reduse the yellowing on a regular skin doll as well.
From what I've seen, Volks (at least) is color consistant between the old resin and the pureskin. If your doll is a bit yellow in comparisson, a light full body sanding will take care of it. The most yellow doll I've ever been in contact with is a pureskin mini (and even then only by looking hard), so the skin type doesn't much matter. Playtime, sun exposure and and general handling does.
Hmm... I don't suppose it would be possible to make a pale natural skinned doll white with bleach would it? I'd imagine bleach would degrade the resin if left too long... Its so hard to find BW bodies to match heads darnit!
jhmmmm yes don't think bleach is good for your doll...but I was just curious.. But I've seen some really yellow dolls on yahoojp...but my Unoss who's pretty old for my opinion doesn't look yellow...lucky me ^^
I've heard a lot about tanning dolls, but.. What about making them pale? o_o; I saw something on bleach, but there were no answers there, and it's bad for the doll.. Plus.. The smell of bleach kills me. x_x So that's out of the question. Period. I thought about how some people use acrylic paint for face-ups, so.. Could you use that on your doll? The thing is, I want it to come out even, and I don't want the doll's skin to be ghost white. Is there danger in getting the color even if I mix acrylic paints to more of a light peachy color? Or something. ._. ...
If you sand your doll, it is going to turn at least a shade lighter. My Custom House St. Demian is a LOT lighter than he was when I got him, because I sanded the POO out of him. He's smooth as a baby's butt now. So. Might wanna try that. *nods*
I'm interested in other methods than sanding though ^^;; I'm slightly bothered by the yellowness of SoulDoll resin so I'd like to see if I could make my Jaakko paler.
*points to Kika's head* That, my dears, is the result of about 18 layers of MSC with white blushing in between. He's a regular skintone Souldoll Paris head on a CP/Luts _BeautyWhite_ body. It took a lonnnnng time. XP But the result is very smooth and even, which I couldn't have gotten if I'd tried to paint it. If you had access to an airbrush, you could probably airbrush it lighter, but I know a lot of people don't. I also used Ben Nye theatrical Super White powder for the blushing, which is probably whiter than regular chalk dust.
I've been wondering how you managed to get the skintones match. That would be one way, but I'd like something a bit more permanent, that wouldn't go away when redoing the face up ^^;;
Sanding might work, then, though I'm terribly afraid of getting grooves on the doll... But - that seems to be the most permanent option thus far. I'm going to be lengthening his legs, too.. So I guess I can paint those bits to match the pale resin..? ._.
Sanding, I think must depend on the doll... I haven't had any of mine turn lighter when sanded. Shin's CH body got less shiney, but it didn't get any lighter. ^^; Except in the places where it was dirty. XDD I wonder if V-Colour would work on resin...?
It's a paint used for plastic that fuses to the plastic permanantly. Paulkaiju has a gorgeous devil Lishie on a DD body. He painted the body using V-Colour. But I don't know if he did the head with it as well.....
A friend of mine and I are on a mission - to make a doll in my custody WHITER. When he first arrived to me I was horrified to see how yellow he was. Next to a white head it was just... ;A; it was awful. It doesn't make sense, because the doll is only about a year old. We do not know if it is because he was never MSCed.. if it was due to how much he was loved and played with and customised in his previous home.. but he is yeeeeeeellow. We do not want to sand the whole thing, so we've been eyeing a few ideas: - Baking soda - diluted bleach Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone tried this before? I've heard from a few customisers that such ideas were possible but I've never heard about it here on the board. It seems such a better option to bleach it whiter then try and buy a whole new body for a pretty white head when this one is perfectly good, the colour is just so off. Any (reasonable) ideas are quite welcomed, but keep in mind we do not want to sand the entire body so we're looking for alternatives.
I would say DON'T use bleach as it's extramly corrosive and can melt certain plastics if applied for a length of time! I would think your best bet would be to get some hydrogen peroxide which is not nearly so corrosive. You can buy it in differnt concentrations at a beauty supply store in the hair coloring section.
Don't use bleach! Bleach eats things, even when it's been watered down. Out of curioisty, what kind of doll is it?
haha, my friend used bleach on a hand for two hours and it was fine but to be honest, straight bleach was my LAST idea in the world X___X I used bleach on my arm a year ago when I had poison oak and couldn't afford a doctor (I know! so intelligent.. XD).. and it got rid of the Poison oak but damn did I have a nasty chem. burn so I know how nasty bleach can be. It's a Luts body.
Ouch. My dad's a Chemist, so I get to see all the nasty stuff bleach can to do things. x3 Someone mentioned Denture tablets, so my guess is your best bet is something highly non-corrosive with oxygen in it.
Yeah, we don't get national healthcare in the States. If you don't have good insurance, you can get really screwed. On-topic again... http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showpost.php?p=474536&postcount=14 ~Kalmia
I haven't had health insurance since I was 18. I'm now 21, but my insurance is just too expensive for me to have it and none of my jobs have had a decent plan. And yes, I would have to pay the doctor to treat me. I went one time just to get a prescription and it cost me almost $150 .. so generally if I get sick I just have to handle it myself. Really .. I don't know, it'd be very interesting to find out what the PH of it would be. I just need it to be a little whiter to match the head. T_T Excellent, thank you Kalmia!
The pH of resin is probably somewhere in the middle- like between 6.76- 7.25 Thats were the most things are, that are handled everyday, or else they come with warnings on them about touching.
Thank you so much! It seems the main idea we were eyeing seems to be a pretty popular idea so I think we're going to go with it! X3
What about some of those oxygen laundry cleaners that claim to work as well as bleach? Just thought I'd add that to the list.
For what it's worth..... Okay, take this with a grain of salt as most of my doll recovery experiance is with vinyl, so I'm having to call in some friends with some chemistry knowledge.... First off... a link that I've kept around. Never used their stuff, generally if Pool Shock and Opps wouldn't get rid of the mold on Vinyl I'd chalk it up to a lost cause, cause it was going to spread no matter what I did. DON'T USE OPPS ON RESIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS WAS ON VINYL!!!! Anyway, they've got a good rep and have some anti-yellowing products. You might talk to them and see what they know about using their stuff on resin.... http://www.twinpines.com/Products.html Other suggestion that if the hair supply Peroxide didn't help you might check a Wood working supply store for some 'Wood Bleach' It's Peroxide based, stronger than you'll get for any human applications, kinda hard to find now... might help....
Hi. I've seen posts about tanning a doll, but is there anyway to bleach one, if it's normal skin, and you'd like it whiter?
Hey Meguone, I've been wondering the same thing. I purchased some extra luts neckpieces the last time I orderd from them and will be trying 40 hairdresser peroxide on one of them, er... in about a month the next time my sister does my hair... XD and will post results.
Waitwait, a tanning skin doll? Why not get it in regular? *confused* I'd be really cautious about doing something like that, as it's generally only the outer layer that's tanned, and then... there's no telling what effect these substances would have on whatever it's used to tan them. You could end up with, at best, a very splotchy doll.... at worst, a green mushy splotchy doll.... oo;
Wow everyone thank you so much for all of your help. Yeah, it's not so much a yellowing problem that I have. Just have certain dolls that I'd like to make white, since they didn't come with that option for skin color. All of these are terriffic thoughts and ideas. Thanks so much. This was a great topic.
What do you all think regular old hydrogen peroxide would do as far as lightening resin? I know I have soaked bone in it to bleach it white.
I tried that, soaked it in a lightfast (lightfree?) container for about.... 3 days. *coughs* Nothing.
Uuuummm! This might sound kinda wacky..lol..But my AR Ren was getting pretty yellow so I cleanned him with crest whitenning toothpaste and a majic eraser and boom no more yellow..it took about about two tries..
Yup. Just like the title says. In case anyone was wanting to try. We're talking the salon stuff, btw. resin neckpiece was left to sit for about 2 hours. no visible change in colour or in the consistancy of the resin. /science project
I wouldn't imagine it would bleach resin under normal circumstances, what I'd like to know though is if it would lighten a piece that has yellowed since it isn't the original color.
edit: I've posted a want-to-commission ad in the Marketplace. help is very much needed and appreciated! I did a quick search and found some threads regarding the removal of yellowing resin, but nothing about bleaching a doll purely for cosmetic purposes, which is what I'm looking for. I have a newskin BlueFairy [blossom] body and a 1.0 Lusis faceplate to which I added a head with Apoxie Putty. the U-noa resin is so much paler than BF's newskin! I had an oldskin, but traded it, thinking I was never going to get a Lusis. anyway, that's in the past. I've tried painting the head to match the skintone of the body, and most people would think that's easier... but it's so ugly! the paint is getting all gunky and really getting in the way of giving my girl even a half-decent faceup. so I figure if someone would recommend some form of bleaching method (not using REAL bleach, of course, as that would be either useless or suicidal, no middle ground), I could simply bleach the body and everything would be hunky-dory permanently. please help!
I've never heard of people painting heads to match, but you can try blushing it to match. That is what most people do when there are having resin matching problems.
I tried that first, but it didn't work very well. the chalk pastels were going on very spotty and refused to blend evenly. I could just be horrible at it. =__=;
It could be that you don't have enough MSC/equivalent....or too much. D: I know once I put too much MSC on and the blushing was blotchy. I washed it all off and started fresh and everything went fine.
should I then just try blushing without spraying it first, and if doesn't work then spray a little on?
oh no, you definitely need a little bit of spray for the blush to stick. Make sure the spray is even. What I usually do is spray about a foot away from the head, and while spraying I turn the head at different angles to make sure I get it everywhere. You have to do this quickly though, otherwise you get too much on. If it's easier, you can do a quick spray of the left side, then quick spray of the right side, then turn the head so you're spraying sort of...up it's nose (so the spray can adhere to the chin, lips, nose, eyes etc), then spray from above the forehead so the spray goes over the forehead, cheeks, and nose bridge. Does that make sense?
lol, I get what you're saying. :] I'm giving the blushing another try because I have a feeling I did it reeeeally wrong first time I tried. I have a set of Prismacolor NuPastels with a peachy one that looks like it would be a perfect match with a layer or two. thank you so much! I'll let you know if this attempt is a success. :P
oh yeah I just remembered, it also might be your pastels that are the problem. Make sure they aren't oily at all...they should be supah chalky. I also find it works better if you use a brush, i've seen some people use cotton swabs or eyeshadow applicators...I think brushes work best. Also, I'm not sure what the skintone is like, but sometimes you need to mix a variety of shades to get the right colour. Try sanding down some white, brown, pinks, etc., whatever you need to get the right colour. Good luck!
Paperbot--NuPastels tend to be on the "hard" side in the world of pastels. Rembrandt are very soft and powdery, and if you go to an art store you can buy individual pastels. With you NuPastels are you scaping the pastel with a knife to get a find powder? Take Poots recommendation and mix some of the colors together, white to lighten, etc.
chopsart: I'm grinding them down on sandpaper to get them dusty. they don't seem to want to stick to the face very easily, but using a slightly damp brush helps with that. it's working better and even though it's still somewhat spotty, it's nowhere near as blotchy as the first time I tried. ^^;
I know this sounds a little funky...but what about putting up a Willing to Trade...to get an old-skin body for your lusis head for the new-skin body? Maybe there's someone out there trying to make a hybrid like you, and needs a new-skin? It might be alot easier then trying to find someone to bleach out the resin.
I had already traded an oldskin for the newskin I have now. my foresight is awful. if someone came to me and offered to trade, I would consider it, but at this point I would rather mod the body I have now.
Totally understandable. I didn't realize you traded an old-skin for the one you had now. But it happens, you know? I can see where it'd be a little crazy to trade back. Just thought I'd throw it out there, though, in some efforts to help, as unfortunately I've never done it before, nor would know where to start. I'd totally help you if I did.
No Prob, Paperbot! Who knows...maybe there's some way to do it, it's just not found on doll forums, but more on the resin figure front? I'd imagine it'd be relatively the same.
I can't imagine any bleaching methods would work, as the resin *is* that color, not dyed. Much like you can't bleach a wig. One idea, maybe, would be to try blushing the body *lighter* with white or other light color pastels?
