I'd like to see some dolls in traditional Japanese attire. From hakama to furisode, it doesn't matter what kind of doll, just so long as they're wearing something of the traditional Japanese nature. I'm getting a doll as soon as the new Volks store opens in November. She's going to be a bakeneko, so naturally, I'm going to dress her in kimono. But I was just curious to see if there were any other people who liked to dress their doll(s) in kimono and such. Thanks.
More pics of cherry blossom viewing in Kyoto last spring: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23705 Getting dolls into kimono is really, really hard, in my opinion. Those pics are proof that basicly, I can't do it. I haven't ever shown them to anyone Japanese, at least not intentionally. ^-^;; Some things to remember: ~ Always drape the kimono left over right. The other way round is for corpses. ~ The kimono will probably come with an elastic band. This is to secure the horizontal fold you need to get the length perfect. ~ The collar underneath needs to be really even, and you can kind of pull it back a little behind the neck for a smooth appearance. But, I never have any luck with that part, I always mess it up! ~ I also messed up tying the obi-jimi (cord) in those pictures too because I'd forgot to download a tutorial. They're available online though. This kimono came with the obi already pre-tied, which was a blessing. If you want to see some perfectly modeled kimono, I recommend this site: http://www.ma.megafit.net/~tencoro/html-shop/2005summer~nenmatsu/furisode-kimono-hanbai-page.html For the record, I also recommend her kimono and tabi. She made the tabi Ichigo is wearing in the photoshoot above, and I also have a unoa-sized kimono from her in the spiderweb pattern. The main URL is here: http://www.ma.megafit.net/~tencoro/
One of the first things we made for Shyada ^^ although we ran out of fady purple and had to fudge the obi a little.
How cool to see everyone's pictures! I never have figured out how to get the sleeves to drape nicely, and it's hard to get it on so it doesn't slip open too.
Hi! I am on my second bjd kimono attempt, this time for Hana. They say these things are easy to make, but in reality it's really hard to get the porportions right. Trying not to make a kimono that looks like it was made by an American! Oh boy! Anyway I got some great red Hello Kitty satin from JoAnn's and am looking for inspiration... I would like to see your doll particualrly SD/SD13 sized in traditional Japanese dress. Would also like pictures of your boys in hakama trousers (next project). Would particularly like pictures of dress other than Volks LE's (Mai, Shizu etc...)
Erm... pretend that knife isn't there *laughs* And from behind: Bought from the Volks store in Shinjuku - hope that helps!
Well, these are not the most traditional (denim hakama). They are also my first attempts at kimono and hakama which means that they are not the best. Um, ignore the pumpkins... I took these on Halloween.
Not really traditional persay, but I'm inspired by traditional Japanese wear if that counts. This one is only about halfway done.
Kyuubi in her "summer chrisantemum" kimono god the pic is horrible but I can´t find anything else...damn photobuckett I had like tow zillion pics...oh well...
Ahhh~! After seeing Brightfire's Harumastu, I was reminded of the movie "Shinobi" and the anime "Basilisk" (both based on a Japanese novel)... And I want to see more boys and girls dresses in the traditional Japanese yukata, kimono, or as ninjas! XD Link to the trailers for Shinobi: http://www.shochikufilms.com/movie/shinobi2005.html (english subtitled, low quality) http://www.apple.com/jp/quicktime/trailers/shochiku/shinobi/m.html (quicktime, high quality) And yes, Oboro-sama is the Sadoko from "Ringu 0", for anyone who has watched that as well... XD
Ilú in hakama: Kimono and hakama: Aulen borrowing a kimono: (and with Ilú again) Ilú in a yukata and Dee forced into wearing a kimono: ...and one more of Dee:
Xanara in a kimono I made for her, sorry for the crappy pictures. (it's also a bit too small for her...features. xD) And Chrno in the same kimono, doing more of a casual look. (Don't ask. The kid has an odd sense of fashion. > >)
My Minawadou Saiki twins in the garden--he's wearing a kimono by gofuku_ohnoya, she's wearing a yukata by Miwa. Twin brother in a different gofuku_ohnoya kimono: I know I have more--just can't track down the images right now!
Ah we can add to this Toushiro in his Bleach outfit which is basically hakama XD Taki bald and modeling the hakama jacket(Not sure the propper name) we have for sale. I'm thinking about getting a kimono for my girl.
It is sooo hard to find men's stuff. Vincent's outfit was from someone on DOA who got it somewhere else. I think it may have been made by the lady that no longer makes them

Anyone have any good tips on how to tie the obi? or perhaps how to make a pre-tied one? ive been trying to make a kimono and yukata for my msd sized doll, but i have no idea on what to do with the obi.. :/
most people go with making a fake, or pre-tied obi. Doing obi knots on dolls, usually is too much trouble. I have a lot of doll kimono and the only ones I've seen done "untied" are men's obi (which are much easier to tie) there are lots of different ways to fake an obi bow, but maybe looking at some existing ones, you can get the idea? basically you make a belt the size of the doll's waist and put a snap or velcro in the back, and then you cover that with the pretied bow. (as a separate peice). Some people sew the bow onto the belt. others have it as a tuck-in type thing.
I've tried sewing the bow onto the obi and have had trouble with large bows sagging and pulling the obi away from the body... So what I do is I sew a piece of cardboard into the back of the obi where the bow will sit, then I sew the bow to a large paper clip and paper clip the bow over the cardboard. Small bows you should be fine just sewing onto the back of the obi to hide the velcro, but if you're doing a large Angelic Layer or Monoke-esque bow, it will need some kind supports. The Takara Jenny kimono book has a lot of good fake-obi making diagrams, if you can find it.
B&G Sky, in a Yukata that I made the other day ^^ I'm still practicing, and looking for some better-looking fabric ^^;
Hay in a kimono I bought recently from one of the DoA members But please don't mind the hair...not really traditional
Here you go. Delagrand in kimono. And here Domodov wears the outer layer of the kimono. And here Ventaroth wears the inner layer. ..yeah..it's insanely long!
I love spoiling my guys with kimono! A shot from last March (2007), with everyone I had home at that time. (No Bodkin, Eiri or Shindo.) Kimono makers include hanawasabi, Dollmore, miniorient, Vincents Angel (here at DoA) and Featherfall. Shuichi in a hanawasabi kimono: Nasake in kimono by hanawasabi: Bodkin in a Kelly-sized kimono from mini-orient. Shuichi in an outfit (kimono, hakama, over-kimono) by an ebay seller in 2006 so I cannot find the name anymore: Trans in Buddhist monk robes commissioned from hanawasabi: Nasake in kimono/hakama/haori by miniorient: Shuichi in under- and over-kimono by (I think) reika_unicorn on ebay:
Here is my Nagi in Heian era clothes. And modeling the yukata I made for a friend's doll. I have also made jinbei for several dolls, but I don't have any good pictures to share.
Our girls have frequently worn their kimonos and yukatas to events, so unfortunately the only photos I have of many outfits are of the messy event type, but here we go... Himeno's kimono - the first thing I ever bought her! Two of my husband's DDs, Aomi and Mitsuki, wearing their yukata. My husband's Mitsuki again, in kimono and hakama - with katana! My husband's PF Yoko, Mimiko in her adorable kimono. My Mai in her kimono. My Sei in her kimono.
Alex in his Kimono made for the annual meet at our local Japanese Festival i wish i had better pics of it...
Emrys wearing the kimono/hakama/haori set I originally made for my Hound 5 years ago - it's quite easy to adjust the hakama to fit either 60cm or 70cm dolls. I used the pattern for hakama featured on the Wikipedia page on hakama, and just scaled it down to 1/3. I got a friend of mine (who is a 2nd Dan black belt in Aikido) to show me how to tie it. It's not 100% accurate - proper hakama should have 7 pleats in front, and this one only has 2. I'm working on a new set that will have the correct number of pleats though.
Hello! I am looking for all Geisha/Geiko/Maiko dolls that are out there. (I searched the threads and couldn't find anything other then traditional asian theme) So please, may I see all the Geiko out there! -Token
Miwa (akakage) posts a lot of beautiful photoshoots with authentic clothing (a few here); Miwa's website is here.
Oh man, I love this thread. There are some really gorgeous outfits~ My dolls have traditional Heian clothes... Yukata and kimono... And jinbei...
Katsumi in't exactly a geisha character, but she's sort of geisha-inspired. (Resinsoul WS Xue, faceup by me): And here she is with a different faceup, in a fantasy kimono:
Great idea! I'm crazy about japanese traditional clothes! Allister, Camille, Kisuke, Yanaelle and Azrael, during last tanabata. Kôji (he's an Oni) And Yukitsuki. I can't put them all here. Would be be much pictures in a messasge, I think
