Hi hi's. I need some help or advice on this little problem. I have two DC MSD dolls, a Ray and Loby, and both can't look upwards due to perhaps the O ring in their heads. If there a way I could possibly get around this? Sueding? Modding? Or what? They can look up, but they can't hold it, they basically snap back down once you release your hand. :/ If anyone needs a piccu to post what the inside of the head looks like let me know. I really want them to be able to look up and stay up. >__<
You can extend the hole at the top of the neck backwards to allow the dolls to be able to look up and hold the pose. A bit of sueding in the socket of the head would also help afterwards.
Pictures: Of O Hook Of Hole FYI there's 4 corner bumps that holds the O hook in place. To twigling: Can you provide a picture or diagram to me to understand on what to do in the interiors? I'm more of a visuals person. Sorry.
I'm also curious about this but with a different sculpt- Can sanding a bit out of the back of the doll's head and neck a certain way enable them to look up? My doll cannot lift his chin at all.
This mod would require that you remove the head and probably unstring the body as well. On the viewers left is an unmodified neck; the hole in this neck is already quite large, so I have traced a red oval, imagine that the red oval represents the actual size of the neck hole. The tongue at the back represents where I would cut so that the head would be able to move further back and hold the pose. On the right is a body that has the neck hole extended both backwards and forwards so the head can tilt both up and down. This mod is somewhat invasive and not reversible as you need to remove some resin. You might want to try just sueding the neck socket first, to see if that will help your dolls hold their heads looking up. If that does not help, then I recommend trying this mod.
Thanks a lot. I'll try out the sueding first as you said. BTW what materials and procedure would be good to cut the resin and such just in case?
I would use a dremel or battery drill with a 3-4mm drillbit. A round file or a cera canna would do the same job, but not as fast and so slightly more safely both for you and your doll.
Also take a look at the bottom of the head. Some heads (like the Elfdoll girls) can't tilt backwards because the "nape" of the head is already low and pressing against the neck. I got a Soah to tilt back a bit by shortening the nape area. Other heads, like the Dollshe heads, and others with chins that are much lower than the neck hole, can't bend forward because they're already pressing against the front of the neck. Sometimes widening the concavity around the neck hole just a bit gives more area for movement.
You kinda lost me, but I think I got the jist of what you said, at least for latter 2/3rds of the second part. But looking at the head and the interaction with the neck, I'm seeing the string is hitting the back of the neck and can't follow through 'cause the string is being 'bented' and more tension is created thus might 'cause the prevention of look upward? (There's also a small gap that's created in the frontal area between the neck and chin, but I can probably just suede that.) I might have to end up doing the mod twigling mentioned, if the sueding doesn't work, but possibly change it to kinda like how my AODs' necks are, they have no problem at all looking upward. (I just checked their necks right now, gen 1+2, lmao.) FYI, the hole for the neck is just a straight lined hole with no angles or such unlike my AODs. Also, again looking at my AODs vs my DCs, would one of the contributions to this problem might be the string itself? o__O??? Their string that connects to the head seems to be a lot tighter then the AODs when I first got any of them, AOD or DC. (So possibly I have to do a mod/suede and a restringing?)
Another problem could be that the O-ring sits too low in the head. If you could lift it upwards within the head you will most likely find the head more mobile. One way is to pull the ring up and put a wooden craft stick (cut to length to fit the head cavity but only just) through the elastic. This will hold the ring just a tiny bit higher but should improve movement a lot.
Another change you might try is putting a washer/bottlecap/whatever in like one would the Luts neck piece (I know there's guides around here for doing that). Just make sure the ring is small enough to be able to shift forward and backwards... letting the head move somewhat independent of the string. I know I got a huge difference in head mobility when testing my Niky head on a Kid Delf body between hooking the string to the head cap and using a neck ring.
I'll try yours first since I'm like pulling the string atm, and applying pressure on the head with my hand near the magnets while doing the stance and it seems to show promise. o-o UPDATE: Looking at the shape and how high the O ring it. The adding a stick to it might not work because of a) the shape inside is a bit steep to allow anything to be held to its sides and b) the tip of the O ring is very close to where the cut off is so close, I don't have a lot of space to play around with if at all. ._____.;;;; To thothep: Please supply when you do. I'm still open to many ways on how I can fix this.
Problem fixed now! ! Solution: Remember the gap and possible solution I mentioned? I hijacked my mom's hot/cold dual glue gun after trying a couple non-mod suggestions, applied a bit of a thick layer to where that gap was being created(which is technically the bottom frontal area), it worked and added more pose-abilty than just looking upward and before! Thanks for all the suggestions guys. BTW, here's some photos of it: I played around with the sueding since there's some side poses where it's 'weak' to hold, I just added the glue to the sides and it also worked. I didn't suede the back since it got 'ripped off' easily from my primary test when I tried moving the head around.
