Faceups How to add paint or pastels to an existing faceup?

Oct 25, 2004

    1. I want to change Dai's face up slightly, but still keep his original face up from volks. My only problem is, he's kinda filthy on his face (like weird bags under his eyes that I know are not shading) so before I stick him in a soap bath and have some thing happen to his wonderfull face up, has any one tried this before and had the head come out with out having any of the face up removed?

I know I've all ready removed some of his blushing with the volks sponge (because the stuff on his chin was bothering me) so I don't want to use it that close to his eye blushing.

    2. Minako, I don't know what effect that would have, but have you tried cleaning it up with a q-tip? I'm not sure if soap and water would cleanm quite as well with a q-tip as with the Volks sponge, but it'll certainly let you get those harder to reach areas much easier without risking other parts of his face-up. ^^

      *on a total q-tip promo spree* =D

    3. Hey all you awesome customizers out there!

I'm currently planning for my new boy (technically my 2nd, but hopefully he'll last longer than the first one *cry*) and I was wondering if there would be a way to put a scar over the right eye WITHOUT taking off the current faceup or messing it up or anything like that, or would it be better to get him without a faceup and then send him off to a customizer for a full workup?

Which do you think is the better, smarter (amd more cost efficient) way to go about it? Get the boy WITH a faceup or without?

Thanks for your opinions! They're very appreciated.

    4. If you are comforable with you skills with donig a face-up, then you can very well do that, it will ceratinly be cheaper, but you should have no problem adding a scar over an existing face up. In my case the scar was just colored pencil, pastel and acrylic, all of which can just go ontop of the sealed face up and will likely stay. The colored penicl i have put over existing a existing face-up for recoloring eyebrows and pastel for eyeshadow has stayed on perfectly withottu resealing.

    5. Scars aren't too hard either. I've done a fair number of them. My method is to take a piece of artist's tape or blue painter's tape(It's not as sticky as regular tape and while it will adhere to the face, it won't pull of the the existing paint or leave gummy stuff there) and rip the sides into a shape I am satisfied with. Real scars are jagged, even surgical scars... I know I have plenty. e_e;; Anyway! Then place the tape where you want the scar. Now take some powdered pastel and brush it on over the tape. I usually do a layer of red + peach to make the skin looks sort of imflamed, then I do another layer of MSC and put some brown around the inner edges. Seal again then peel off the tape. Sometimes that's too harsh a contrast, so I brush the scar over in some pure red pastel... really lightly tho. :3

here's nathan's scar on his chest. it's sort of hard to see.

former doll eric's scar over his eye. I used some paint to build up a pysical cut in his eyelid. Both scars were applied over existing face-ups or blushing. :3

    6. Your poor dolls... They've been abused. o___O

    7. And I make 'em sit around naked too! X3

    8. too bad i dun think if i did that my mum will be pleased... hehehe

oh well i think scars can really show a macho side of ur dolls :D so ppl love scars... [coughs blood]

    9. u;r right but scar on males make girls squeal :D

      *keiko squealing in the background...*

    10. I think I've seen some pictures of her before.. I always really liked the way you painted her. :3

    11. Oh...my gosh. *has a fangirl moment* You really liked the way I painted her?
Heh, I've been a fan of yours for a while. It means a lot to hear you say that!

    12. Ok, I am completely unsatisfied about the face-up adjustments I gave Tyr (maybe because I always expect too much) so I'm ready to give him a new one. Just a couple of questions first, because I have the habit of screwing things up...often...eheheh :|

First of all, he has the default face-up from luts, and I refuse to swipe off this face-up because I want to keep the lips and eyebrows. I wanted to know, can I coat him with MSC and then paint on top of this existing face-up and then coat again? I only wanted to adjust his eye make-up. The thing is, I want to keep his lips shiny but when I coat him with the matte, he'll lose that shiny hehe...and will it look chunky if I coat matte over the shine?

Also, I used a Q-tip to apply the chalk pastel for the shading around the eyes, but it did not glide on as smoothly as I would like...is there something else I can use?

Yeah and one more thing; what glue does one use to apply eyelashes? One of Tyr's are kind of falling off his eyelid:(

Thanks in advance for those of you who took the time to read and answer my questions!^_^

    13. Tacky glue I think for eyelashes....other than that, I dunno.

    14. 1. Yes, you can paint on top of the faceup by coating the surface, painting, and then coating again. You can also paint directly onto the surface and then spray. As far as I know, all resin needs to be primed before painting, so there is existing tooth on the surface.

His lips won't look chunky, but if you touch his lips without letting the spray dry, the lips can indeed get tacky and "chunky." To make his lips shiny once more after using a matte spray, purchase acrylic gloss/varnis at your local art/craft to make his lips shiny once more. Or mask off his lips before spraying using a masking tape that won't yank the paint off of his lips.

      2. I use Q-tips to blush, but you need to apply pastels in layers. For instance, spray, pastel, spray, pastel spray. Try not to go overboard with the layers, but pastel has a tendency to look very clumpy and patchy if it is overworked. Some people recommend brushes, but I like using Q-tips. Note: there are many different methods as to using a Q-tip, and through experimentation, you can find a method that works well for you.

      3. Any water soluble glue works well. Aleene's Tacky Glue or simple, basic Elmer's glue works perfectly.

    15. Thanks Rynn! And thank you honeyedbiscuit for answering all my questions, at least now I feel a bit more confident about doing his face up. :D I'll let you guys know how it turned out^^

    16. If you feel comfortable doing your own faceup I'd recommend it, most faceups make the doll more expensive. But if you don't think you'd love the faceup you gave your doll do buy one and be happy.

I don't know if this is a standard problem, or if it's even relevant since sealing isn't always necessary if you use pencil...but keep in mind that if you seal your scar ontop of an existing faceup you should try to match your spray, either testors or MSC, to the original faceup artists....usually MSC...
I've only successfully mixed them once...every other time (4 tries before giving up) it went kind of milky. Stated again...I don't know if this is a regularly occuring problem or just me being special, but keep it in mind. :|

    17. She's completely beautiful, and I love her scars. She's possibly my favourite 07 ever :)

Descending Twilight... did you get this sorted? I'd say it depends on where you want the scar. Mine goes through my boy's face up, rather than over it. If it was on a cheek or something, you could feasibly add it later. You can also coat it with paint-on matt varnish, so you wouldn't need to spray it if your boy's face had already been coated.

    18. wow that looks amazing mutehoney :D

    19. Thank you - but it's just thick paint and blush :)

    20. This has been helpful. ^_^

    21. how about burn scars? I have an idea of how i'm going to do it, by take some sort of thick paste mix and putting it on the burn area with a sponge, but anyone have any idea of a sort of permanent paste mix? apoxy sculpt is too thick to apply with a sponge.. i was thinking plaster?

something to make the raised, puckered/tight skin of a burn scar. Kind of like the teacher in the movie pay it forward.

    22.
    23. would pastels be ok, or should I really use an airbrush.? Any adive?

    24. have you had prior experience using a airbrush to blush dolls before?

    25. I always touch up my dolls' faceup with a bit of blush. I just use pastels, and even uncoated they last fairly long.

    26. Pastels should work just fine.

    27. I have no experience with dolls/airbrush..what type of pastels? Can I get them at michels/ac moore?

    28. Any type of chalk pastel will do (actually under the category of soft pastels, but when you touch them they resemble chalk, which is what makes them different), ummmm and you can get them at Michaels. Though I've never been to AC Moore, I'm guessing they would if they have art supplies.

    29. Look for Nupastels at Michaels....they work just fine. I use a little makeup brush right on the stick, but I also use an exacto knife to scrape some pastel dust off the stick, and tap into that. It's frightfully easy....you just need to be patient and go over it a bit.

    30. I looked through the whole section and didn't see anything, and searched too, so please point point me towards other threads if you know of them.

I have both a DoT and a Hound and would like to do some work on their faceups, but not remove the current ones. Hound needs some work on his eyebrows, the Sha needs his very orange blushing toned down. They both need different lip colors. I want to keep most of the eyemakeup on the hound and all of the eye/eyebrow paint on the Sha.

To remove blushing, I am probably going to use a Mr. Clean sponge cut into small shapes to get in delicate corners, and will be coating with testors dullcote, evening out with chalk pastels where needed.

what I need to know mostly is: Can I apply new acrylic lip paint and gloss over the pre-existing gloss, or will it not stick? I like the *shape* of both their current lip paints, and don't want to erase them.

Hound has Tensiya default makeup, Sha has DoT default (quite recent, so should be no makeup/chemical problems.)

Any help here would be hot. ^_^

    31. I'm really curious about this too, since I love my boy's default makeup but I wanted to give him black eyebrows instead of default brown. I don't want to mess with the rest of the face makeup and actually like the current shape of the brown eyebrows.

    32. Right now for our hound, I have watercolor pencils on top of the existing eyebrows to lengthen and darken them. It worked very well, but eventually they have faded because I didn't coat them. I used very very sharp pencils and it was pretty simple to do. ^_^

    33. I am interested in this, too. I would like to add a little more pink to my Soo Ri's lips.

    34. I touched up Kelyn's face-up when he first came, and I used watercolor pencils for his eyebrows, and painted over his lip color with acrylic paints. I didn't seal it though, because I didn't know that I should at the time (Kel was my first). But both worked fine. After I re-did his faceup this past time, I touched up his lips and made them pinker by using watered pastels.

    35. If you're careful & methodical you can save a lot of the faceup that you love. Painting over a glossy surface is always going to be a bit impossible if you're using water-based paints, but you can remedy that somewhat by misting the glossed lips with a bit of MSC/Testor's first to give your new paint something to stick to. Selective buffing with tiny bits of sponge is a good idea, and make sure & coat anything you're wanting to keep before you start doing much to it, addition-wise. I've done a lot of this with August & had good results.

Make sure to yank out the eyelashes, first! Sealant always seems to find them...

    36. Yes, sealant makes the eyelashes stick together and look icky... :P

    37. tenshi_no_korin: Thank you! That was close to what I was thinking I would do, glad to know it works~

    38. Can I do this?

I'm getting a dreaming El for christmas, and I'm thinking of asking for a faceup (if my parents will let me). I LOVE the dreaming El faceup, but it's missing one important piece of the character. A biiiig scar over his right eye. xD I don't plan to mod on a scar, so would it be okay to paint over the luts faceup?

Oh, and while you're here, I have one more question. ^^ I've heard that luts faceups aren't sealed and will rub off. Can you seal a luts faceup with Testors?

    39. Yes and Yes. You can do whatever you want with your doll.

Luts faceups ARE glossed at the very least, so you'd have a layer of gloss, then a layer of Testors that would take the shine away. You'd have to add another layer of gloss over it if you wanted shiny lips and lids.

It might get gunky and sticky, and the Testors might react badly to the chemicals in the gloss so you'd be risking ruining the whole thing, but what you do is up to you.

    40. Ooh, yay. ^^ Thank you~ I've sealed over my own gloss before and there hasn't been a problem, but I'll have to do some research with the luts gloss. Thanks! ^^

    41. this is helpfull! ^^ I was wondering the same thing!

    42. Ok, I have a Dreaming El with a Luts faceup, and since he is a dragon in human form, he has scales in places. I am seriously thinking of giving him a few on the head...however, should I spray his head before I start painting or should I not paint his head period?

    43. Well, its not the best idea to spray over the gloss. You can mask the glossed areas with masking tape and tissue paper and hope the faceup doesn't take damage.

    44. *looks around* Theres a lot of threads on scars *hearts the forum search*, but I haven't found any specific tutorials. Is there any for step-by-step methods? I'd really appriciate it :3

    45. I hope this hasnt been discussed...I searched & could not find anything.

I would like to add a Liitle more color to my Naraes Eyes. (temporary color)
Maybe a Little bit more shadow & Liner.

Can I safely do that? And what Would be suggested that I use for adding this color.

      Thanks

    46. You can always add more to a face up, such as liner and everything. However, if you're trying to find a way to do it without ruining the current face up if you ever want to take it off, that might be difficult if not impossible. All face-ups are pretty temporary, so if you had a face up, and just want to add something to it for a short time and go back to the old face-up, I think that wouldn't be possible.

You can probably use pastel for shadow and acrylic for liner.

...Wow, that rambled. Hope you understood what I was saying. I just woke up from a long late night playing games. XD

    47. If the face-up is sealed well, then pastels would be rather easy to apply and remove later with water. Same with acrylics (the more thinned they are with acrylics thinner, the easier to wash it off later just with water) and watercolor pencils.

But the problem might be the glossed areas and eyelids usually are. Cuz it's hard to paint over glossy surface and pastels simply wouldn't stick...

    48. Oops, double post.

    49. Most things that you would use to do a faceup (acrylic, pastel, watercolor pencil) can be easily wiped off with water AFTER/IF her current faceup has been sealed. Otherwise, human cosmetics with NO OIL look really nice, but can be hard to find.

    50. I'm not sure if it would work if you want to take the colour off later..only if the face-up you're going to paint over is really, really well coated..maybe coat a few times extra to be safe? I painted over my Cecile's face-up, changed his lip colour and his eyebrow colour, did both with pastels and it stays on just fine, even though the lips were glossed.

    51. Thanks for all your replies.
I assume she has been sealed (well). As I just got her From Narindolls.
I dont care if what I add wears off over time.

I dont want to ruin her current face up though.

But I dont own any sealer & wasnt planning on getting any, just to add to her eyes.

    52. Sorry, Double post.

    53. I just ordered my delf bliss and the faceup I had in mind includes a red cross on the forhead. After luts denied me the red cross I found myself just a little concerned. I know luts will do a beautiful job on the rest of the faceup but does anyone have any good suggestions to adding the cross when I recieve him?

      My concerns are:

      1. I mess up and have to wipe it having issues with losing the factory faceup as well

      2. I've noticed luts faceups stay longer than my many coat MSC faceups I do myself...I'm afraid I coat the whole head in MSC and it will make the faceup fade faster. Any other sealant suggestions once I do find a way to add my cross?

      3. should I need to seal it with MSC any suggestions to sealing it without getting it all over the eyelashes and the such? oO?

And if you dont have good answers any good suggestions for customizers that could help?

    54. Heylo! I've changed bits of default faceups before, and my best advice is to cover the face with paper towels or a rag - all except the spot you want to work on. Then coat that spot with a LIGHT layer of MSC, paint your cross, and coat that spot again.

If you mess up and have to wipe that spot, don't use rubbing alcohol or acetone as it will take off the Luts sealant too. Use a piece of Magic Eraser. It will take a bit longer, but it will prevent getting a sharp outline.

I hope this helped! Good luck! :)

    55. If you paint on the cross you should be able to wipe it off with just water. All faceups are sealed, so just using soap and some water wont remove the LUTS faceup. MSC doesn't make faceups fade, it'll secure them more :D

    56. My msc faceups come off sooner I dont mean fade I mean over time the MSC flakes off etc...

    57. I'm coming very close to purchasing my first doll, a Dollmore Model series Kyle Reese. I'm afraid to get him without a faceup, because I won't want him to just be .. blank-faced and scary.

However, the default faceup they give is a bit boring.

Has anyone ever applied a faceup over a faceup? I'm not afraid to try to do one on him, but I'd like to do it on top of the one he has, since .. I don't really have the confidence yet to apply eyelashes or anything like that.

Sorry if someone's asked this before. :doh

    58. You can apply a face up on top of another face up. I believe most companies would seal their face up so the paint shouldn't come off when you paint on top of it. However, mixing thinners with your paint and paintbrushes MAY remove the previous face up. If you plan just to blush the face abit with pastels, you are completely safe. The down side is with blushing, you will have to seal your work to make the blushing stay.

Spraying a sealant such as Mr. Super Clear over attached eyelashes would basically, ruin your eyelashes. It creates white snowy flakes on the eyelashes. So unless you plan not to seal your work, you will have to remove the original eyelashes and reapply the eyelashes after you have sealed your work.

      Hope that helps!

    59. I've changed the default faceup of my Hyun without removing the original faceup. It's possible to even add or darken colors over gloss as well. However, you will have to remove the eyelashes. It isn't hard to put them back on, just some school glue, toothpicks and a tweezers should do.
