restringing an old bermann

Oct 16, 2005

    1. hi -

my mom has one of the older bermanns and his stringing is way too tight so we finally worked up enough courage to attempt to restring him....

only problem is, neither of us know how to take him apart and would like some advice before we go medieval on him.

      thank you!

    2. Wow...so you got one of the old ones with these double joints (see pic to right)?

When you take these guys apart you really want to take note of allll the pieces and keep them in order. Also note when you take him apart that the pieces also have a 'dot' sculpted in them to let you know which end is up. The old Bermann only has 'dots' on all the RIGHT side pieces.

Also, the stringing goes from the knot in the head cap down each leg and loops directly through the foot. I don't like this for reasons that I like to do maintenance and be able to take the feet off easily, so I put string through the hooks in the feet and hands and then tie those to the main elastic.

I would suggest joining the Yahoo Group "Hound Calling" and look under the FILES section. I created a Wiring Tutorial you can follow that also touches on stringing these guys.

      Hope this helps!

    3. just out of curosity...what did the "double joints" on the old bermann DO?

Also curious....does the extra joint on the knees / elbow make them pose a lot better (the way the are on the new body)? You would reccomend that jointing over a normal BJD's type joints? I wanted to know because I might want to make my 60" anthrodoll like that...I just wanted some feedback on his jointing from some experienced bermann owners (IE you guys... XD!)

      Thanks so much!! :daisy

    4. oh - thank you! we're going to try it this weekend...

um, personally - i HATE the double joints on berman... i mean, i love bermann - his sculpt and everything - but i just wish we could do things with him - like take pictures...

but we can't get him to do anything but sit there... we can't even get him to stand (hence why we finally decided to take him apart and see if restringing might help... as well as a few other small tests we'd like to do on him....)

but i love the double joints on the luts shoulders... and we have some 1/6th sized dolls (the barbie sized ones) and some of them have nice double joints... but i haven't figured out what bermann's do... but maybe that's just me....

if you decide to do it, i hope yours work out better!

    5. That extra piece in the joints doesn't really *do* anything. I think at the time of the design it was used aesthetically to house the actual joint itself, but since then Dollshe has definitely improved on the look- made the joints smoother. I like the double joint in the Bermann's shoulder though.

The new joints have a 'locking mechanism' in them which the old joints didn't have. My Bermann was really wobbly until I wired him and now his legs will stay straight much better. The new design makes the legs more stable, but yet you have to 'unlock' the joints to move them whereas the old style moved more easily. But that's a good compromise I think.

As far as looks, yeah the old joints don't look as good...but I usually clothe my guy pretty much anyway so they don't show most of the time so it's no big deal. The look of the joints actually don't bother me as much anymore. I used to photoshop the knee to make it look better in pix, but not anymore. I think it sort of sets him apart now so I leave it alone and let him freely show his joints to the WORLD!!! lol... :daisy Okay...that sounded weird...if this paragraph were ever taken out of context I think people would die laughing!!! :cow

    6. *nods* alright...I think I'm getting it. :daisy Yea the knee on the new Bermann is a LOT nicer looking. I never knew about why the old knees had the extra EXTRA parts in them…and apparently they don’t do anything anyway! XD; Thanks for the replies! I appreciate the info! ^__^

How about the elbow joint? Does the extra piece allow him a better range of movement? Can he hold more poses with his arm (elbow bendy-ness) than other dolls?
