Operation Iplehouse EID/Akando body and DIM minimee Hybrid

Mar 13, 2009

    1. The biggest mod project I ever did. And something others are waiting for ;)
Akai wanted her Minimee head on the EID body of Iplehouse. As I planned doing the same, I helped her with this major mod.

      Before: The process

I did this project together with Akai

As you can see on the pictures. The neck is huge. There is a lot of work on the neckhole will it ever fit. Note: Not all heads are suitable for this project. The head needs to be width enough to make a big neck hole. Luckily the minimee head was perfect.

Iplehouse website said the neck was 16cm. But after our own measurements it was just 14cm. Our 5,5 inch as on the picture. That was a bit of relieve, less resin to remove.

      Mr. Dremel time!

A huge hole. I checked it often how it fits on the neck and how much I needed to remove.

      Looking good so far.

I sculpted the S-hook hole with epoxy.

      Continued next post...

    2. Now it looks much better. The head lays deeper on the neck.

It's not possible to cover the head on the top of the neck. The akando head doesn't cover it either.

      After. The result
May I present the first Minimee/eid hybrid!

EDIT: How my minimee looks on the neck. see here This is my second job.

    3. Whoa! That looks so awesome!

can you post a full body photo? I'm curious on how it would look like since I'm thinking of doing the same thing. (MnM head on EID body)

    4. Full body shoots will certainly come. Akai don't have all parts yet. She is waiting for Iplehouse sending her new upper legs.

    5. Now that looks a lot better than I thought it would. IN fact, I didn't believe it would be possible. Good work! Just out of curiosity, who is the Minimee of? It is a very striking face.

    6. Thank you, we hope we can inspire people to also try this :] It seems like quite a scary project but it really isn't as impossible as most people seemed to think. Tho without a dremel it would really be way too much work.

The Minimee is based off my own drawings.

    7. Wow, that was incredibly helpful, thanks! I'm bookmarking this thread.

May I ask how drastically the increased neck-hole affects poseability? That is, can the head still move up and down alright?

    8. Thanks for the compliments on the head, I am extremely pleased with how he turned out. The wonderful faceup was done by True Crimson.

The head can move up and down perfectly fine. There was extra space made below his chin so the head can roll backwards nicely.

When I have his full body together again I will make more pictures of his neck for those interested.

    9. The neck still looks really think compaired to the head. DIM does sell bodies for Minimee heads and I'm kinda shocked on how no one uses them.

    10. oh~ not a bad match! I had plans to put a minimee head on an Iplehouse EID model body but after seeing the minimee on the Super Hero body, I'm having second thoughts.... *____*

    11. Thanks everybody ^^

Sometimes the body doesn't fit a character. Akai's characterconcept was a very buff muscled man. DIM body looks too slim for that.
For me: I prefer to pick a body I like and match it the best I can, instead take the body of the same company that doesn't suit my taste.

I prefer my SD boys buffed up and muscled ;) *pets Ark.

    12. Any more photos of this awesome guy? I'm dying to see more of him! :chibi

    13. Thank you for the answer to the question on so many minds: is it possible? Congratulations for having he courage to tackle the project in the first place and the generosity to share your results. I think he looks surprisingly in-proportion, when the wig is on to hide that funkeh bumpie at the back of his neck.

Totally looking forward to seeing him completed and all dressed up!

    14. Finally I received the replacement legs from Iplehouse, so he could be put back together. So here are finally some full body pictures!

I am extremely pleased by the result. He became the enormous buff monster I wanted him to be :p The proportions are quite stereotypical of fantasy styles that I enjoy.

We hope this inspired you :]

    15. Akai, would you mind sharing the dimensions/measurements
of your MNM head? I'm interested in the EID body for
my Sephiroth MNM head, as I believe this body would
probably work for him the best, but I'm afraid the head
      might be too narrow, and small for the neck (even with mods). ^ ^;;

If you could just tell me the length, and width of your MNM
head that would be awesome (if you could also tell me the width
across his jaw-area, that would be even more helpful). Thanks
for posting your process, and results, truly inspiring.

    16. Finally found my measuring tape again :p

Not sure if I measured this correctly.

10 cm length from chin to top of head

7 cm width from the thickest part of his head, not including ears

A little more then 5 cm from jaw to jaw.

I hope this helps :o I asked Denny to make the jaw even wider from his original sculpting. Now it covers the thick neck perfectly from a frontal view. I'm afraid you'll always see a bit of a bulge from the neck from the side (unless you sand the neck a whole lot, which I wasn't prepared to do yet), but this can be covered with hair just fine.

If the superhero body doesn't fit your minimee head, I would wait for the slimmer EID to come out, I think that body will be very suiting for minimee's as well.

    17. Akai, thank you very much for your help!
      Those measurements are great, thanks!
I have considered waiting until IH releases
their model-type body, but the more I look
at it, the more I believe the EID body is a
good match for Sephiroth (at least in the
style, if not in color/size). ^-^ Thanks again!

    18. [spends several minutes trying to find jaw from floor where it dropped, & refit to head; then spends several more trying to figure how to express feelings in speech printable on this forum; finally settles for]

....... SUUNUVABEECH-! Hot DAMN! SUPER, Ultra, over the top hot damn!

      Uh...

      *ahem*

OK, first off, THANK YOU in excelsis for doing that. I've been wanting to, but too cowardly (& lacked the EID body) to try. That's AWESOME, to say the very least.
IMO, even with a bump at the back of the neck, unless he's gonna be bald - so what?

      [goes & faints again]

Next, I had to open up my Yul Brynner Minimee head neckhole almost as much for a 70cm Unidoll body. I did also dremel down the top inch or so of the neck, particularly in the rear to produce a more gradual decrease in neck size. I just had eye surgery a couple of weeks ago & can't really see to take decent photos (not that I ever took decent ones to begin with) but as soon as I can, I'll post my results, too. Did you consider reducing the neck itself, since the top inch or so is hidden in the head?

Finally, LOVE the face. That's just marvellously ominous and menacingly sexy.

Wow. Wow. Wow. That's it: come hell or high water, the next male bod for my Minimee guys is that EID, if I can snag one somehow.

      What can I say, except
      IWANTONETOO. METOOMETOOMETOOMETOOMETOOMETOOMETOOMETOOMETOO - !

Excuse me; I have to go mop up all this drool before it stains the flooring.

    19. great mod, and thank you for posting all the process pics... you have made me determined to put my david boreanaz on an EID body now...

quick question.. resinmatch?? it looks like you have a normal and white skin there, but even the normal seems pale for the IH resin.. am I right, or seeing things???

      Seek peace

      Carol

    20. Both the head and the body are normal skin.

Iplehouse resin is pinker then the more yellow Minimee resin.

The resin match is decent enough, it does look worse in some lighting. But in normal daylight it is hardly noticable to me. It might not be a too great match for people who are really worried about such things, but I'm sure with some nice blushing it would look much better.

    21. Hmm, I've been toying with the idea of trying to get a Juanes Minimee. Do you think they would be happy to make the base of the head pretty wide to facilitate this kind of mod if I asked?

    22. If you mean the neckpart, they won't do it. I asked too but they said they can't do it because they work of a base mold and don't change it.

    23. Not the neck hole itself, but adding more to the outside of the neck/jawline. Just to make sure there is enough of a base there to do this kind of mod.

    24. I don't think they will add anything to the neck, but you can ask them to make a very wide jaw for sure. Either way I'd ask them about it just incase :]

    25. I'm going to take the liberty of posting my initial comments on my own IpHouse/Minimee engineering exercise here. If the original poster wants me to remove it I shall & apologize for intruding.

I got an Iphouse EID Muscle body with the extra mobility thigh feature. The head is going on today to the party I split him with, but before I sent it, I took some photos & measurements of the Luo head that came with the body.

This IpHouse bod is a 70 cm. This new guy DWARFS the Unidoll body. IpHouse lists the EID as a 70 cm, while the Berkut is 68. What a difference a mere 3 cms makes! I'm taking photos for the modding as well as general comparison & will post on its own thread when I've got my ducks in a row, hopefully next week, but this new IpHouse guy is - gigantic. I mean, humongous, huge, hulking, enormous, astounding, just plain BIG. I swear his feets are as big if not bigger than mine! And HEAVY. He weighs a ton. I thought my Limhwa Bella was heavy (Limhwas are pretty solid little curvaceous critters; I think it's that bosom) but he beats her 3 times over. I'm going to put all of them on the postal scales when I get through just for fun to see how they weigh out. The point is, even photos pale before seeing it in person, just how big & solid this Incredible Hunk is.

The size differential in bodies between the Unidoll & the IpHouse is even more striking when they're seated than standing: standing, the Unidoll isn't too much shorter than the IpHouse, or so it seems. Seat them side by side, and the IpHouse can almost extend his arm straight out & over the top of the Unidoll neck (both bodies being headless, that is).

I was up at 4 this morning taking photos of the two heads, the Minimee (Yul Brynner aka Maghwa) and the Luo head that came with the body, which is going on to Finland today. I also measured both 6 ways til Sunday as it were. Interesting. The heads are the same size, literally, in all directions, both circumference, chin to crown of head, width of head (exterior cheekbone to ext. cheekbone), etc. etc. I used my good old forensic calipers & dredged up my old skills in phys. anth. bone measuring. (Nice to know you get to use stuff you learned, however esoteric, somehow, eventually) The only differences are the width, length (front to back), & depth of the head's neck hollow, especially the depth. The Minimee head hollow was/is 2cms x 2.5 cms x .5 cm deep. The IpHouse head neck hollow is 4 cms x 4.5 cms x 1 cm deep - quite a difference in something the size of a doll head!

Having examined the Minimee head internally, I don't think the base of the skull can take too much deepening of the hollow. Hollowing out to 4 x 4.5, yes, but deeping by another .5 cm, no. Therefore I'm planning on reducing the length of the body neck itself by .5 cm as well as reducing the top inch or so by grinding it down with my handy dandy little trusty dremel. I guess I'm not the Mad Dremel Queen for nuthin'. I will take photos as I go this time. I'm documenting everything, before I start, & as I go on.

This oughtta be interesting, if only as an exercise in engineering & dremel work. At least I can take him outside & grind him to avoid the dust inside. Maybe there'll even be a little breeze or so to blow it away for me.

Oh - & I did get the 'mobility thigh' option. This guy's legs go every which way under the sun. If he can't or won't pose, it won't be because IpHouse didn't try to put in the capacity. From what I was doing last night (trying to see if the Maghwa loincloth fit; it doesn't - I'm going to have to insert about 2 inches at the crotch to make the fore & aft flaps reach the correct lengths) he's got the flexibility of Spiderman & I should be able to tie him in knots like a pretzel. He certainly wanted to do it on his own! Definitely he's gonna need sueding & wiring, but with a far heavier gauge covered wire than the 13 I use for Bella & Ollie. I'm going to need something big enough to anchor the Queen Mary, I suspect. I'll hit Lowe's tonight & see what they've got & get a few sizes to see what I can get away with. Too big & I won't be able to bend it.

The interesting thing is, the IpHouse body is circumsized, while the SoulDoll was sort of just a generic organ, hard to tell if it was or not, and the Unidoll definitely isn't.

Yeah, this definitely is interesting, & not just because he's a new doll [body].

I want to re-thank Sint, the original Mad Modder, & Akai the equally brazen & daring dollymom, for forging the way with their initial mod detailed above. If not for them I'd still be whining & pacing the floor instead of revving up my own dremel. Guys, you're as much pioneers & explorers as anyone who ever trekked up Mt. Everest. You've gone where no dollymoms have gone before. Thanks again, & good job. We'll see if I can measure up with my own ops.

    26. Thanks everyone ^^

I just ordered an EID body myself, so waiting for him to turn up for an other major modding :D *puts mr. Dremel in action.*

@NancyS: Your post is welcome here ^^ Nice to see the measurements of the Luo neck hole. I had to guess as Akai sold the Akando head. I kept one the +/- 4,5cm and it seems I was on the right way. Good luck with your project. And yes the unidoll body looks so small next to the EID body. Sadly, as the unidoll body was one of the most buffed bodies out there. Think about it that the unidoll's chest size is the same as the EID's waist o-0 Talking about big XD

    27. What impresses me most is that the photos of the IpHouse EID body next to the Unidoll still don't really convey how BIG he is "in person". This guy is MASSIVE. And HEAVY. I should know as I dropped him & he nearly broke my instep.

Yeah before the Iphouse EID arrived, the Unidoll was looking downright Mr. Macho. Then the EID arrived, & everything else looks, if not scrawny, certainly slightly underdeveloped next to THAT thing. I'm actually glad I didn't get the special Strongman version with the very large, pumped muscle arms etc. Of course, next to an elephant, even a draft horse looks small, doesn't it?

Yeah, the more I look at it, the biggest problem is going to be gauging how deep to go with the neckhole depth of the Minimee head. Enlarging the size of it won't be a problem, but the depth is another matter: the vinyl just isn't that thick, & I'm not thrilled with bolstering the thickness of the neckhole area with apoxy like you did; therefore as noted above, I'm going to also try to reduce the top half inch or so of neck and resculpt it to a smaller knob. I'll do the neck first & then the head, going back & forth to make adjustments gradually & get a better fit instead of just charging in & lopping off chunks like I normally do. Even I am capable of learning discretion just may be the better part of valor in this matter - sometimes. Also he's big enough if I mess up, he just may decide to karate chop me & if he does, I'm a goner.

That is one BIIIIIIIIIIG boy, him.

    28. I have one. I hate it. I mean its not the worst thing I suppose and its better than nothing but its hard to pose, the resin has some random black spots in it (not sand off-able and these spots were there when I got it), where the joints meet little bubbles are showing up. Also, its got this pain in the butt back arch that is SO uncooperative and the hands ALWAYS come out of the ball part (so you can see the hook, if you look in the galleries you can see what I mean) and the shoulders are not great posers. He has a lot of problems standing. He's very creaky (which I don't care about but some people might) AND HECK, The EID body is just DAMN SEXY! :fangirl:

One thing I love about the MNM body is the smell, its the perfect resin smell. Yum.

    29. NancyS, You could always try to make the neckhole on the MNM head as deep as it was on the Luo head and then rebuild the socket from the inside of the head once you have achieved the desired depth, by using Apoxie. This way you can thoroughly reinforce the neckhole, and not have to sand any of the EID neck.

To Sint and Akai: great work!! I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to open the neckhole a bit more so it would cover the neck more, although this would probably (?) involve going towards the chin which might prevent the doll from being able to look down?

    30. Thanks twigling ^^
Yep it is posible to open the neckhole more, but to cover it up, I'm not sure, until I tried it myself ;) My plan is to do it with my own Minimee head. I will remove the whole inside part and rebuild it with epoxy. Maybe it will cover the neck more. Of course I will keep an update on my own project.

The EID body is at customs at the moment, but I hope to work on my own project soon ^^

    31. That's my plan too.... major overhaul of the MnM neck hole itself. I'll probably even be moving it backward and adding to the back of the headcap.

    32. Uuuuh, amazing work!!! *_______*

    33. I finaly got my own EID body. Before the modding I made some comparison pictures between the minimee head and Luo head. And some more closeups on how well the head fit on the neck. I will post these later.
      But for now:

      More here : Click

    34. Oh. Wow. That body has convinced me that I made the right choice for my bodyguard doll. *_* And that is an -awesome- mod you did there. THough I think the billion+ comments to that effect might have already given you that impression :P Anyway, another congrats and great job!

    35. Hi. Just weighing in with an update on the ongoing modding of my IpHouse EID body.

I must note here that photos really don't do this guy justice: he's massive. I mean, he's a BIIIIIIG boy. He practically has his own zip code, he's so big. And he weighs - well, if not a ton, enough that I can't pick him up or hold him very well with just one hand.

I don't have closeup photos yet of the neck details, but I will state that I got out the dremel & sanded the neck 3/8" (just short of 1 cm) shorter, then sanded around the circumference all around, altho mostly on the sides & most heavily in the back to reduce that large bulbous rear neck swelling, for about 1 inch (2.5 cms) down from the top of the now-shorter neck. This not only minimizes the amount of modding I'll have to do to the neck hollow of the Minimee head, but helps keep the head from looking even smaller & less proportioned than it does. However, I have come to the conclusion I will have to ditch the lovely "mohawk" hand-made, custom wiglet that was a gift from the incredibly talented & lovely TigerBaby (who is also maniacally detail-oriented & patient; making it would have driven me out of my mind). I think the head is going to need a bulkier wig style & more hair to balance that hulking buff bod.

Other than that, I heated the hands in hot water & compressed the finger spread somewhat - mostly for ease of getting his hands though sleeves, and separated his big toes from the others. I have yet to suede or wire him; I'm wondering if he even needs it, but probably will.

The problems I've noticed with this body:
      * it doesn't really want to 'sit'. I can't even really disjoint the thigh in order for him to lean forward. Has anybody else had trouble with this, & if you do get yours to sit upright, how?

      * I can't keep his feet straight on his ankles. They are continually & continuously popping out of the ankle joint & setting at odd angles, turning backwards, etc. Again, anybody else have this problem, & how might I go about fixing it? Suggestions most welcome. I'll post photo of the neck sanding/reduction as soon as I can remember to do some closeups, hopefully this weekend, at least.

NB: I have worked out patterns for the jeans & fitted shirt he's wearing. If anybody would like a set, pm me. I also have a pattern for the pants & shortie flak jacket his buddy, Berke (Unidoll body, Angeal Minimee head) is wearing, altho be forewarned: the flak jacket involves a LOT of very detailed fine topstitching. Not really for beginners, unless very ambitious to do lots of tedious trim work.

One further note regarding sewing for our Big Boy: the major advantage of his size is, he's so big you can use regular buttons - 3/8" or even 1/2" - and they look just fine, as you can see on the blue shirt front. Likewise the smaller "real" buckles, jeans snaps & studs, etc.: he's big enough you don't have to special order the tiny doll sized ones; in fact, they're too small & don't look well on his clothes, just get lost, as it were. Regular zippers, too; I used a 6" invisible navy zipper (not a doll zipper) for the jeans. So, that's one real plus. "Ingredients" are easy to get for this guy's clothes, cuz he can use the real thing, he's that big.

    37. Thank you for posting this! I have my own similar mod project coming up and the tips are helpful.

    38. Wow! thats cool.

    39. oh my...now i need a minimee head and that body...

    40. I just finished mods to my minimee head and have it on en EID model doll body. It turned out well. I freaked out a little at first because I kept sanding and sanding and sanding and wondered if the structural integrity of the head would fail because I took so much resin off to reshape the neck hole. But it worked!

May I ask what sort of epoxy other have used for re-creating the neck hole (i.e. the ledge inside the head where the S-hook sits)? I used stuff I bought at my local hardware store that dried with a blue tinge to it, but it's hard as anything and I can sand it down. I'd never bought epoxy before. What kind(s) have you guys found to be useful for this type of mod?

    41. I bet it was a quit of a sanding job ;) So glad I got a Dremel. As for the epoxy, I used Aves Apoxie Sculpt to create the S-hook holdingplace. (That's the normal colour. Aves comes with white colour too, but that is a bit grey.) But I think any epoxy will do for this kind of mod. It's hidden unlike with ears etc ;)

    42. NancyS,

What are you going to do about the resin match between your head and body? The modding job looks good. He's very realistic.

    43. I was afraid I'd do in my poor Dremel with this job, but it held up! Thanks for the recommendation about the Aves Apoxie. I wish I'd had this during my mods. The epoxy I used had a 5-minute hardening time, so I had to move fast! Two hours to sculpt would have been a blessing.

    44. Bump for any update weirdnessmagnet!?!

    45. Wahauwww that's fantastic X3
-high fives- I love EID hybrids

    46. The mods are complete and the boy is put together. I'll post pictures as soon as I have some decent ones taken. :)

    47. Wow, thats amazing!

    48. Thank you SO much for this thread! One of my OCs is also quite the strongman, and this will *really* help to bring him together. Sint and Akai, NancyS and weirdnessmagnet: you sincerely rock.

    49. oh my god, it's impossible!
      and you made it О_О
      he's incredible *_*

    50. I am speechless!!! You are really good!!!

    51. Hello i came up to this link form former bjd experts gave me this link i buoyed a asleep eldolon head neck matches on S.I.D neck size so i was wondering should i mod the neck or the doll head neck hole so that way i have my original iplehouse sera head and my Asleep Eldolon head. Although i ask pepstar about it she told me is the body neck hole to modify i a bit confused to what is what to modify really. will take pics to show it here on this website si.

    52. I do not have an EID body, but a SID. However, I have a head which I would like to set onto this body. And the neck of a SID is still pretty large. Until now, I was a bit sad that this head, also having about the same measurements as the SID Lee head, only ALMOST fits after some dremelling (is that even a word?) on the neck. It still thrones on top, but with the short wig the character requires, it looks just funny. So, many thanks for the explanations and pictures of this thread, let me to a solution to make this specific head actually find onto the Iple SID body.
