Hi! I would really like to give Meliantha a tattoo but I don't know what the best way is. I mean, I'm not going to paint one myself on her...i'm not attempting that just yet. ops: And I was thinking about temporary tattoos but I'm not sure it's a good idea. I don't want to make a mess and wreck her body. Does anyone have any tips/advice to give me?
draw it out first XD im giong to be doing a full back tattoo on an SD boy once he arrives ::Whimpers cuzz tracking numba isn't working and mexpost doesnt have a coherant website:: but there is a certain kind of paper you can get that will transfer the lines (water soluble) to the doll and you can see what it'll look like (tattoo artists use this).
I currently have a cute Pokemon temp. tattoo on Salim's back. I figure if it's safe enough for little kids to be sticking on their bodies, it won't hurt my BJD. I would recomend coating your doll before applying lick n stick tattoos that have a lot of black in them. Also, if you want the tattoo to stay around for a while, MSC it after it dries too. ^_^ I'm assuming if you don't coat it, it'll just scrape right off, or come of with some nail polish remover. (The tattoo reccomends scotch tape to remove it from skin.....)
Hi Everyone, Here are a few pictures of my doll Mordred, showing off one of his wet the back temp tattoos. It was really easy to put on and it should come right off with alcohol. I hope so anyway. Has anyone tried to remove one of these yet? Tom
thank you for your advice. though i'm not feeling so confident yet to go paint on her body, i really would like to since i've a wonderful idea for her tattoo but i must post-poned it for now...
I wouldn't use pencil crayons, as they sometimes have oils in them, and use wax as a binder which would make them really hard to get off. I use watercolour pencils. Coat the limb first, draw the tatoo, then coat again. The pencils are great because you can use a tiny bit of the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser as an eraser, and it comes off clean. ^^
^^; I've run a search through DoA, so I think I'm safe to ask these questions / post my concerns? *Nod nod.* I don't have my doll yet, but I am already planning him, so... 001 --- What type of paint would you reccommend for tattoos? > I've read a lot about acrylic paints, etc. (even for the face) But am I really thinking about the acrylic paints... as in, paint-a-painting-with-acrylic-paints paint? (You can tell I'm relatively new.. XD). 002 --- What happens I don't thin the acrylic paint? 003 --- I understand I should coat my doll 2 - 3 times before painting tattoos. Should I coat it with MSC? Does the acryllic paint stain the resin if it is on for too long? How often should I rotate the paint? By rotate I mean, clean the body and let the resin sit without acryllic? >.<; I am so nervous about this.. & My concern is - My doll will have a tattoo intensive body. The tattoo (just one) will take up his entire right leg, tummy + upper back of torso, neck, and then a part of his face. To make things more exciting, this tattoo has to be changed every 30 days or so for just one day (it is a part of who he is - can't blame him, or me XD), and is of the same intensity / complexity. So -- it is pretty crazy to change such a complex tattoo for one day and then have to re-do the entirely same tattoo the next. I was thinking I could purchase extra parts, like the right leg and torso. But I don't think legs can be sold seperately / they'll accept such a weird request? 004 --- Would changing the tattoos every 30 days (12 times a year), ruin the dolls body? The dolls tattoos will also be opposite colours (silver & black), so I am afraid the black will smear and stain the body .. ; somebody suggest something please & thank you for reading~ I realize this is a very... weird? ... post (:
I can answer some of this. 1 Yes acrylic paint - recommended brands that I have seen are liquitex, and windsor newton, and goldens? I think. Same as for face ups. You can also use watercolor pencils or pastels ( not oil based pastels) No sharpie. . 2 If you dont thin, It will be goopy and smear more, and be less controllable. But it wont hurt the resin, so you can try it how you like. 3Yes coat it with MSC first. And the after too. Some colors or types of paint will stain, especially if uncoated or if the bjd is beauty white. I think if you stick with the liquitex you will be ok. I dont think most people worry about how long you leave it on for / rotating the paint. I dont think that will have an effect on stainability. I think some people recommend coating with MSC annually or biannually because it wears off with handling. Most of the rules that apply to faceups apply to tatoos. I n fact I cant think of any that dont. I dont know about changing it 12 times a year though. Good luck and have fun.
coat with MSC first, then go for it with acrylics or whatever media you want. Don't be too 'precious', paints can be removed and corrected easily. Here is my doll's tat: http://www.livejournal.com/users/discreet/8291.html?mode=reply I used acrylics, watercolour pencils, pastel pencils, coloured pencils - basically I just went mad. Good luck with your tat.. and don't fret *too* much.
I have a crazy question. What kind of medium would be good and washable (just in case I mess up) to put some sort of marking or tatoo on the back of a tiny?
That was pretty~! So if I do one, I should put the color down first and let it dry, then outline it in black? And you can get those at Wal-Mart, right? Or do I need to go to Hobby Lobby~?
For the watercolor penicls you don't have to work wet with them. I didn't that time, but if you did work with them wet then yes, wait until dry then outline or add finishing touches as you please. I bought my set at a craft store ^_^
I use watercolour pencils for my work as well, dry works best. You can use a damp qtip or a fine paintbrush as an "eraser". I tend to outline first, then coat, then add colour, so if I screw up on the colour the outline stays. ^^
It's a really good idea to spray with a layer or two of Mr Super Clear first, which just ensures you won't stain the resin at all.
Okay, okay. I tested it first to make sure I could wash it off without staining, and to be honest I like it. I know it's not perfect, but it's...uniquely mine so to speak. BEFORE: AFTER: If you get to close to it then it doesn't look as nice...
I realized something weird. Lily's back isn't even. Her right side is longer than the left, so the mark might seem a bit off due to that.
Zoi, OH! those tattoos are beautiful!! What, pray tell, is your inspiration? I would get those myself!!
Um..I was planning on giving my Tatsu [Delf EL] a tattoo on his back..>.< But I'm a n00b and I don't know what I need..I really don't want to mess up..Also..I need ideas cause I really don't know what I want as a tattoo for him. I was going to give him Miyavi's tattoo "don't hesitate and go" but I don't think I'd look good on his back..>.< Can you guys please help me? Also..I only have a near-by Michaels to buy stuff so..yeah. Thanks much! 3
For planning the tattoo, I suggest taking a photo of your boy's back and using photoshop to draw up a few tattoo ideas for him ^^
Yea I do that with my pen and tablet... good way of seeing if would look good... when I do my tats I use... MSC to coat.. light coloured water colour pencil to draw outline.. say grey if black tattoo and then paint with black acrylic.. then remove any stray outline with a Qtip dipped in water and then seal again with MSC.. I use very fine brushes 000000 to paint. Hope that helps... thats how I did this tat.. sorry for crap pic only one I have... this one below I painted freehand
Hmm..So I coated his hands/feet so far(is doing nails too)..Using water colors for the tattoo is ok right? To outline it I mean.. And then going over in acrylic paint..? And also..Is it alright to use prismacolor pencils? Cause I happen to have a gray one and I was wondering if it'll stain or something..>.<
I used water color pencils for my boys' tattoos and I think it works great for details: I don't know about prismacolor pencils though I worry that they may have some type of oil in them (being that they're so soft) which may stain the resin. But I'm not sure. Edit: Oh yeah! Also, I think there may be a tattoo thread in the BJD picture request section. For ideas and inspiration I think it's a great place to look ^^
prisma colors actually work great i used some and wiped them off. but i did find acrylics to be more useful. it takes a few layers built up to make the color vibrant on your doll.
You can see some of the tattoo's I've given my girl. My technique differs a bit than some of the others out there, but this should give you an idea of how to approach it http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49457 Good luck! -SpOoNy
I don't know if this was already asked... But I just want to ask how do paint tattoos on your doll? What materials do you use?? Could you cite a complete instructions on how to do that?? Thanks!! ^_^
There are no "exact" instructions on how to do a tattoo, just what you can and can't use and go from there. While Aimee's tutorial in the BJD Orbyrarium on doing tattoos certainly gives good visual advice, it's up to you to create the design and transfer it to your doll.
Here is a cool tattoo tutorial from Junky Spot, not sure if you can see it if you are not a member, but you could always join. http://www.junkyspot.com/OBITSU/forums/index.php?showtopic=5231
I'm wondering if anyone has used frisket or any other peelable masking material to 'stencil' on a tattoo?
I have I question...I thought I saw somewhere that you can use regular temporary tattoos...You know the ones that you can get from a vending machine. Has anyone tried that/Can you do that?
Do you mean the temporary tatts you put on with water, or the metallic sticker-like tatts? Ive seen people use the temp water-apply tatts. Coat beforehand, coat when dry afterwards. In fact, some people have put on quite large tats (full back size) that were bought as temporary tattoos off ebay.
Ahh, Ok. hobbywhelmed: I did mean water based ones, Sorry that I wasn't very specific. Thanks for answering, Crazyfish and Hobby~
I would not use Microns, since usually those pens are waterproof, semi-permanant or permanant ink. I think its like using a sharpyand wquld stain the resin I am going to try to do a tat once i get purgatorys body here, i have an idea how to do it, i'll just see if it works I also tried to do one of those...printable water decales...used a laser printer/copy from my work...and the color came right off it >_<
I was wondering if anyone had tried using a metallic or otherwise fabric paint for tattoos? Any other suggestions on tattoo materials that you've figure out? Thanks
Please don't use fabric paint on your doll! That stuff is unstable, waterproof and permanent. Not to mention it's thick and not very nice for painting much else other than fabric, and in the end it will either bond permanently and leave stains or peel away completely and never really stick. There are metallic paints and metallic mix-ins you can get for just about any brand of acrylic paints. Liquitex is generally considered the best (and most expensive), but with a well coated doll you can experiament with some of the cheaper ones like Apple Barrel or Folk Art. Both of which I know offer metallic, pre mixed colors. Just be sure to coat what you are painting very well before hand. I also have gold and silver metallic prismacolor pencils that I've used on my faceups with no adverse effects at all. I'm pretty sure you can get some other metallic colors as well.
I just used watercolor pencils to do a very elaborate full-back tattoo on my boy--they worked marvelously well
I second the watercolour pencil! I found it much easier to control than paint, and you can get finer detail. Here's Eli's tattoo, if you want an example:
Wow that's really a good tattoo! It looks ... real. wow. I should give my girl a tattoo in watr color pencil... what brand?? anyways.... this might help... Tutorials on Tattoos?
Hey mystical-maz, where were you able to find a 000000 size paintbrush? The local hobby shop here only carry brushes to size 0/18 where I live. Also does anyone know where I can find a 0/20 size one??? I'd love to find these smaller brushes to use
Yea, I've seen some here at DollSoom. -> http://dollsoom.com/shop/step0.php?b_code=B20050401080227&c_code=C20070331111935 But I still have no idea if anyone uses them or not...They probably do, but I've never heard anyone talk about them.
I know Lachlana used a huge temporary-type dragon tattoo on the back of her latest boy. I imagine they'd be somewhat permanent with coating underneath and several coatings on top (but you could use a satin or gloss brush on acrylic too, for added local strength. The only thing I can't be sure about is for how long the colors would stay strong. Could always paint over them eventually if it's meant to be a permanent thing on the doll. Even real tattoos need to be "freshened up" sometimes!
Ok, I'm getting a DoI LE Kalix and (long story) want to put "LVIII" on him. It's the Roman Numerals for 58, and thats the number he is, since hes a LE. Im thinkin the base of the back of the neck, or the shoulderblade. Im open to suggestions of where to put the tattoo, also need to know what to use on painting it, and supplies. IE, MSC etc. Thankkkksss!
Well, placement is really more of a personal choice, but for Ken's tats I used watercolor pencils to outline them, the liquid watercolors to paint them on. Here's how his look: I think they look pretty good given that these are the first I've ever done, though they are fairly...wobbly...where I had trouble keeping my hand steady. You could also try just the pencil, on thick enough to go over with a damp brush to make them more smooth (going over JUST the pencil, carefully, with the damn brush)
i agree with ayas-shadow, location is definately more of a personal choice. the back of the neck wouldn't be bad, its an awfully small area to work in. you could always move it down to be centered between the shoulder blades...or even on a forearm so your doll won't have to be topless to show off the tattoo. after you seal the body you can lightly sketch the design on to see where you want to put it. if you don't like it, magic eraser should take it off.
i left my boy's tattoo on one of his shoulders[the WS one]. you can have a view. i use watercolou pencil but i m movin into acrylics soon. guys>>> i think he need help with choices...thats why he asked i think shoulder blade is kinda cool 8D
As everyone else said, there isn't any "right" place to put a tattoo--the question really is, where do YOU want it to be? There's a great thread for pictures of dolls with tattoos in the Picture Requests - Everything Else forum; you'll find it easily if you search for the word "tattoo." That could give you a lot of inspiration! And if you take just a minute to search right here in this forum, you'll find a lot of threads with tattoo how-tos and suggestions for materials. If you stop and think about it, there's really no need to ask people to post the same information over and over again when it's so easy to find, right? Here's one recent thread to get you started: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=238200
