I tried a search for this.. But didn't come up with much. Has anyone ever tried to make their BJD's Finger nails longer? How hard could it be...I'd imagine you wouldn't want to try it on anything smaller than an SD.
I havent, but there was a booth at the Dollpa in Nagoya with fake nails for SD! They just pressed on! They were really gorgeous, very well made... but a bit small on boys. ^_~
Hello ~ I have a friend that did a fantastic job making the nails on her dollfie long ~ she just shaped new nails using the same acrylic nail resins that they use at the nail salons. Turned out freaky and fabulous!!! Looks like a lot of work ~ Have FUN!
I saw a site once where they just bought press on type nails and used a razor to cut out smaller sizes, sanded them a bit, repainted if needed and glued to the hands.
It must have been.... FOREVER ago, but I think it was Seph (Aquired Rapture) who made temporary fake nails for her boys from straws... ?
I just made a set of nails for Leslie by cutting out pieces from small (about .5cm) drinking straws. They're awesome! The straws were just the right diameter for my DoT's nail bed. The only problem is that I glues them on with Elmer’s so I could get them off if they didn't turn out, but they just went and fell off on their own Any suggestions for glue that will stick to the smooth plastic nails and still be removable if a get tired of them?
I'd go with white craft glue (PVA). I use it to add stick on jewels to my dolls faces. It can be peeled off when you get bored and so far it hasn't disrupted their faceups so if the hands are blushed there probably wont be a problem. I've been wondering about making false nails. I was going to cut up some fake ones myself, I'm not so sure about drinking straws.
I made long nail for my Kyrie using the acrylic used for people nails. It took some time but they are quite strong.
Actually I'd like to make fake nails any idea what I could use? other than straws hopefully... And those nails on YJ... What would I search under?
For permanent nails you can also go the route of sanding the actual finger under the nail down. If I'm not mistaken, I think Morbidollz Montressor (CP Breakaway) has that done. It does shorten the finger though, so sometimes it looks a little odd, but if done right it can also be very attractive!
I ended up lengthing the nails on my slightly miscast flexi-body a bit using apoxie (since I had to fill seam gaps on the fingers anyway -_-; ) and was quite pleased with the result. One the apoxie was hard I sanded and filed them down to the desired thickness. It's rather permanent though. You can sort of see them here : http://members.shaw.ca/zoi_no_miko/yume_yori/yuukidragon6.jpg
There are LOTS of 'fake nails' threads if you search for them http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156147 http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26315 http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142641 http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126031 http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42551 http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36591 I'm almost positive any human fake nails you would buy would be way too huge, unless they sold infant sized ones ^^;
I have made acrylic nails with acrylic powder and liquid acrylic similar to how its done at salons. There are also Japanese customizers on Yahoo Japan who modify hands that way and auction the hands. In salon when your hands are too small for fake nails they just cut the nails down, similar could be applied to dolls. Instead of nail polish I would use chalk, watercolor, acrylic paint and gloss like used on faceups. Easier to change the color of the nails later.
I scrolled through the list and only saw one partial answer to a similar question I've got. I'm considering doing the same thing when my boy gets here, but using LA doll clay. Anyone got any suggestions?
Yea, I've been thinking about that, the tricky parts would be roughing the "nail bed" for the application of the fake nails as well as making sure not to put too much product on while still keeping the strength of the "nail". I've figured that the best way to go about it would be to put the fake nail down as far as possible on the "real" nail so as to insure bonding since there really is no nail at all. I guess I was more looking for photos of people doll hands who had been modified and how they did it. I kept seeing this one doll who had had her nails modified, but they looked too thick and clunky, too much product was used I think. Since I'm not planning to go the same route as you, you should definitely post results if that's how you decide to go about it. If I was going to do what you are though, here's a suggestion, put fake tips on the doll much as if you were going to apply human artificial nails (cut them, shape them to your liking, all that jazz), but then mold the LA doll clay on top. This will give you a sturdy base for the clay and give you better control of the sculpting. Even if the nails you plan to modify will still stay short, I think it would work out better this way.
La doll clay is an air drying paper clay, and will not want to stick to the 'nail beds'(I mean the original nails of the doll) once dry. It's meant for sculpting things entirely, not adding onto other materials. I believe if you try to add onto the hands with La doll the additions will be brittle and snap off. If you're looking for something permanent to sculpt on with try Milliput or Apoxie Sculpt. I'm not sure I know any materials you would be able to sculpt on with that would be non permanent, but would stick. I believe there's a thread on how to sculpt claws if you search for it, that would have more information on sculpting onto hands.
Hmmm... thanks for the suggestions, guys. I read something about baking sculpy with a hair dryer. I may try that instead. Still planning!
I would use the "drinking straw nails" (From Yuzu) and buy the do it at home acrylic nail kits and use the acrylic powder and liquid to make them look more real.
I wonder if using gel or acrylic nail product would work. I am a hairdresser but had to "learn" nails for state board. When you do acrylic or gel nails you use this sticker paper, it sticks on to the finger and goes under the real nail. You use this when you want to do acrylics without a nail tip. If you put the sticker flush with the start of the nail you could apply them just like you normally would. Now the only issue is would the chemicals ruin the resin. Anyone do nails on DOA know about the chemical reaction this could cause?
I've used the same materials as making nail extensions for a human, only I didn't put gel and nail glue directly on resin but rather made the nails first then glued them on with regular glue - or for temporary use I used eye putty which kept em still enough for tryouts. I cut the plastic nail tips into suiting pieces then file them into shape and size wanted.
So since I got a huge batch of nail tips in that aren't the style I need, I decided i'd file them/modify them to size with my SD girl. They're so freaking small to handle but i'm pretty happy with the outcome. I have a lot of nail art supplies so was able to put some of that on. There's a rose on the thumbnails but you can't really see. ^.^ For the moment I didn't want them staying on my doll so I only used sticky tac to put them on, that's why you see some white parts. I would glue them on if I wanted them on perm. What does everyone think of them? Should I make more? How could I improve them? PS. My camera doesn't do macro, I can't get any closer and some details/texture is lost Thanks!
I love the idea!!! I think if you cut them down to a shorter length and fit it to the existing nail bed and also did some sanding (sandpaper or a nail file) to make the fake nail and the cuticle area blend seamlessly and glue them on, it would look better. You can PM me if you want further ideas.
I tried doing that, but it's impossible to do. The little nails are so small my tweezers barely hold them, i'm not sure how i'd be able to grasp onto them and file them that way. Do you have any ideas for how I might go about doing that? It's really hard because the nails themselves since there so small aren't curved as much as I would like either XD. This was the kinda look I was going for, just a bit diff:
What about getting an acrylic nail kit instead? It's easier to manipulate wet acrylic versus a plastic nail ready-made. You could slightly bend the curve into the plastic nails too.
Sorry, i'm not sure what that is. [I'm really not very nail oriented, I just bought some on ebay on a whim XD but know nothing about nail making]

Yep. No prob. It's super easy to use because you follow the instructions in the set for your SD girl's nails as if you were doing your very own. Good luck and sorry about the delayed reply. I'm looking for the right wig/eye combo for my incoming minifee girl.
I just looked at this tutorial and I think it will be good for the look your going for, and it gives a more realistic look (curved and can be bit translucent). If you follow this tutorial then I think it would be easier for you to cut, and so get the shape of the nail all the same as the ones you made some have round edges and others are square.
If your tweezers won't hold these nails well for filing, maybe invest in a pair of the super fine tipped tweezers like these ones: http://www.revlon.com/Revlon-Home/Products/Beauty-Tools/Eye-Tools/Ultimate-Tweezer-Point-Tip.aspx (I got one for my eyebrows at shoppers drug mart, I just got their quo brand for like $3 - it's pretty much the same) The nails look cute and are a great start!
Acrylic dollfie nails sounds like a great idea. I have a broken hand that I kind of want to experiment on now. (Not sure how the wet acrylic would react with the resin given the way it reacts with human nails) Agreeing with a lot of the above posters here about nail shaping, however I think a lot of that is to do with the fact the nails are stuck on with putty. I think if you stuck them on with white glue, a lot of the nail bed issues would be resolved. ^_^
I agree, the nails would look a lot better. I have a lot of putty under it so that they wouldn't fall off! I'm just too nervous to put glue on blushed finger tips.
Had the exact some idea as you! Might try these when my girl comes, probably will be harder though because she's a MSD haha~ Are you cutting the or filing them? I'd cut them to the length I wanted then file the bottom,Sides, ect into the shape of his/her nails so it's more natural looking
Thats exactly what I did. I cut them into strips then cut the ends a bit to round it out then I used a nail file to smooth them. It will be hard for MSD esp if you want them shorter. It's hard to file them with enough pressure and hold the nail at the same time haha.
Have you try'd using Sticky Tack/Wall Tack? I make Fake nails all the time and I buy these Skewers/Long Toothpicks stick some sticky tack on it and then the nail,it makes everything so much easier with Filing, painting, ect. It might work with tiny nails to? :3
Oh, nice! I want to test making gyaru nails once ^_^ I'm thinking about getting a cute little girl once, and then she's going to have a sweet gyaru style ^-^ Thank you for the tutorial! :3
I saw some pictures from this poster on flickr and in a lot of their photos their dolls have fake deco nails that are pretty popular in Asia. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8155/7492372652_72da277dbc_z.jpg Any ideas on how to make/obtain something like this? I was thinking about making them somehow and maybe attaching them using the same stuff you would use for eyes.
I've never tried it myself, but I've heard you can make them out of drink straws. You just cut out the little nails, paint them, and attach them--eye putty might work, but I'd say you should try Ailene's Tacky Glue. It will stick better than putty, but it will still peel off of resin when you want it too.
Well I planned on doing this with vinyl dolls so that is probably not a good idea because I'm afraid the glue might somehow become integrated with the vinyl. Thanks for the idea though!
If you're using the wet nail acrylic I would suggest using little straw cutouts to measure each nail and either build with the acrylic on that or use them to trace the size on plastic and build the nails that way. I might do this when I get my girl for some snazzy claws. Of course a few months of past cosmetology school helps. ^^'
