I was re-dressing Adrien in some new jeans I just bought him, and noticed that along his knee, where the thigh meets the ball of the joint, there ia a small hairline fracture, that is maybe 1/4 inch at most. I was afraid that if left unchecked, the motion of posing him would put added stress on that place anf further crack it. So, I got out the old super glue gel and put a little in between the crack and stood there holding it firmly in place until it bonded. Did I do the right thing? Has anybody else had this happen? And, if so, what did you use to fix the crack? I don't think it's a huge deal right now, but if the fracture continues, it could ultimately chip off the lower portion of the top of his knee. This is my first BJD injury . I have no idea if he came to me like that and I just didn't notice it, or if I somehow did it. Any info on stuff like this would be very appreciated. Hugs, Gayle
I remember something similar happening with Sher's Jerimiah Blue... either that or the resin pieces around the thigh came unbonded... in either case, I believe she used super glue, and I haven't heard any trauma since. ^^
You might send a picture of the fracture to Dollmore, and see if they will replace it...? Or you can do as Zoi no Miko suggests and superglue it. I've also had really good luck with Zap a Gap to repair dolls.
I just checked the super glue fix up and it looks pretty good. Stable, and strong. I am just gonna be very careful for a time, when I change his clothes or pose him, to make sure it's really solid. Thanks for your input. I guess I maybe did the best thing with it, and hopefully I won't have further problems. I wouldn't feel right asking dollmore to replace the leg/knee. I bought Adrien on the secondary market, and it's possible, he has had this fracture for sometime.
Cyanoacrylate (super glue) is fine for fixing resin, but be sure to check it every few months to make sure it is still strong. The bond can deteriorate over time on some kinds of materials, but if it does, just re-do it.
Gayle! I'm sorry to hear this, I didn't notice a fracture when I had him. But I didn't really touch/look him much... If you'd like I could talk to Dollmore about it. I feel like a jerk! Nako
Oh Nako, don't feel bad. It's a tiny little thing and I think I caught it before it created a problem. And, it may have always been there, I mean, the only reason I noticed it was I had him under my magnifying lamp as I wasx doing some blushing stuff on him. Otherwise, I would not have even seen it. I suspect that he came like this, and this was just the first opportunity that anybody noticed it. I don't think you are a jerk at all, so please don't think that of yourself! I love Adrien, and am so glad you had him for me. I may write to Dollmore and see if they could sell me a back up leg piece. I would be fine paying for it as there is no way to know when or how this happened. But, it would be nice to have the extra leg piece in the event this somegow gets worse (which I honestly don't think is gonna happen.) Please don't feel bad Nako, you did absolutely nothing wrong. Hugs, Gayle
Well, I was walking downstairs with my dog's leash + dog in one hand and my doll cradled in the other. What do you know, suddenly my dog decides to run as fast as she can. I drop Dawn on the wood floor. She lands face-down. Thank goodness her face is fine. A couple of days after, I find a crack on the joint part (rounded part--what we would call our knee itself) of each side of her right knee. So there are two cracks... each a thin line going straight down. The cracks are on opposite sides of the knee--no cracks in the middle... just on the straight sides. I can't really take a clear pic. Do you think this was caused by the floor? Should I use clear nailpolish to seal each crack up? Should I try sanding the cracks to see if they'll disappear? I don't have any MSC on me, but I will buy some if that's the smartest move as far as sealing the crack goes. Also, if I should buy some MSC, please could you tell me the best/fastest way to get it in the US? I don't want to make her posability worse or lose her leg. Thanks so much.
Do NOT sand it yet - Email Serendipity, tell them what happened and see what they say. It's possible the crack could get worse before it gets better if you sand it. You weaken the resin a little once you sand.
Hi Vox, A couple weeks ago I noticed that Adrien had a hairline crack on the top part of his knee. I used super glue gel, and held it in place til it bonded. After it throughly dried, I sanded the top with very find grain sandpaper. So far it is holding beautifully. You might try that!
Sher also used superglue on her Jerimiah Blue. ^^ Apoxie sculpt is also reccomended by the makers as being very good for filling in cracks and bonding broken things, so if the superglue doesn't work, that's another option. ^^
Thanks, guys. It is more a hairline crack--now cracks plural... and maybe the cracks have to do with the seams... I think a bonding material plus sanding would probably help. I emailed my seller since the Serendipity site didn't respond yet and she said to send her pics... having a hard time getting a clear shot, but I will send them in and see what happens. Still not sure if these are crack cracks or just seam problems/defects. Anyway, there seems to be one on each side of the knee on both knees, but only two of the cracks seem to really be hole-like (if that makes sense). Thanks for all of your help.. I will deifnitely post back on this thread when I take action.
Okay, after much panicking and sobbing I need to post for help. Last week when I removed my SD10's head her string became super loose; during this week I've played with her quite a bit. Last night I found a massive crack by her knee joint on her thigh, probably caused from Thursday's outting. When my boyfriend checked it he noticed that the thigh piece was made off center. The cracked side was thinner than the other side which was thicker. We're going to fix her crack with epoxy putty but I was wondering if I should use anything else?? Thank you, Kels
epoxy putty is fine, I would suggest you using Tamiya epoxy putty, smooth texture. You will be able to color it, sand it and it doesn't chip or break easily. I wish you tons and tons of luck.. ;D
Thank you hisuida!! That gave me tons of courage! Having a dollfie injured just breaks my heart, and to happen to my only girl made me feel so down. I thought maybe getting her a new body since I can't just buy the part but that would seriously drag the funds for a boy for her. Thank you again, it really helped!
When the resin parts are cast, there are only "starter dents" for all of the holes in the body, arms and legs. The actual holes are hand-drilled (think of the dust!) Imagine trying to drill multiple holes from different angles that must intersect blindly on the inside of a piece of resin! So sometimes they can be a bit off-center. When I did esthetics on a friend's old-body 4 Sister, I reinforced a couple of thin places w/ epoxy putty on the inside just for safety. I held a flashlight to the holes and could see that the torso was thin (more translucent) under 1 armhole and 1 arm was thin at the shoulder.
Oh wow... that gives me a little more perspective on how the dolls are cast. o.o I wonder if they're slush cast then? hmm...
Is your girl old resin or pureskin, and are there maybe pictures you could show of the crack. This sounds a lot like the common knee wall crack that comes up a LOT in the sd10 bodies. <.< If I keep hearing about this, I think I'm going to put together something to send to volks about it because there is no reason to spend so much money on a doll just to have the knee bust out.
She's a pure skin Nono SD10. I think Volks should have something where if you send a broken piece they would replace it. I think that's fair. I'm sure they could fix it and resell it cheaper or at a fair price. There also should be a dollfie hospital section where people can freak out. SOS Forum =P
Volks has a SD hospital - in their shops! If you take your girl to the LA shop, they will replace the damaged part no questions asked from what I understand. Note that this is only done in the physical shops, though.
Resurrecting an old thread, as I was just looking back to see who had owned my Vince before me, and read this... I think I am his fouth owner? He still is holding up, even with his cracked knee And you were right Gayle...he does LOVE Harry Potter, ( Can't get him to change outta this outfit now):
Hey there. I don't have decent photos, sorry- I don't own a working camera. Mine broke and I can't afford to replace it, so everything turns out VERY blurry. I had to shrink it like crazy before it was recognizable. ~_~ I only have Paint on this computer, too... I drew with the pencil tool on it exactly where the crack is; this is the right scale of the crack- exactly how big it is outside. While restringing my doll I let the string and the wire I was using get away from me trying to answer the phone and the wire hit on the doll's lower leg, on the place right above the foot and it I think it left a crack- this is when I NOTICED it, at least, it may have been there a while. It goes about a 2 centimeters up the outside of his leg and it's slightly worse inside. Outside it's just a surface crack, it seems, but because it seems deeper inside I'm sure the crack is actually going all the way through and just is more superficial in appearance outside. Nothing fell off though, everything's still intact- it just cracked a tiny bit. I want to fix it now before it gets any worse. Sorry I can't provide photos of it, I'll try to borrow a friend's camera too if it's needed. Please help me fix him- I've only had him a week and it took me a whole year to save for him. EDIT: Filled it in with some Epoxy superglue for resin on both sides, purposely thick. It seems to have worked. I'm going to sand it down later and I'll keep you updated.
Here are some pictures of the crack in his knee. Sorry they aren't very good. link link link link link link He's a DoT Homme Ducan from DoD. Does anyone know how I could fix the crack? I'm really freaking out about it... I'm scared if it cracks more the peice might break off...
How did it happen? It looks pretty deep. You could get epoxy and coat the inside/outside to prevent further cracking, but you would have to paint over it. If you message DOD, they will most likely sell you another thigh piece for around 30-60 dollars.
I'm not sure how It happened. I haven't dropped him and he hasn't fallen or anything. I was putting on his pants when I noticed it one day. And I'm always really careful with him... So it's really weird he has this crack... And thanks so much! I'll probably to that to stop the cracking until I can get the money to get him a new thigh piece.
THE SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME. i just got my homme ducan yesterday and noticed the same crack in the same spot! it's even shaped the same, curved like yours. thats ridiculous. i think its because the resin is so thin in that area, and personally my ducan's knee kept popping into the socket because hes strung so awkwardly. i don't know if thats how it happened, or if it was there before or what but i e-mailed DOD, so hopefully they'll fix it for me. i hope you can get yours a new thigh piece as well.
I had the same problem with my MNF Shiwoo. One knee even had the crack progress so much that a pinkie-nail sized piece of resin fell out. I glued it back in, but it was proof enough to me that simply putting super glue in the crack did nothing. Your best bet is to find as many people in the Customizer marketplace that do repairs as possible and PM them all with pictures and ask for a quote. They will probably reinforce the back with epoxy, but that is still better than having to fill a hole with epoxy like I'll eventually have to do... Luts offered to sell my thigh replacements when I contacted them about the problem, but then they never got back to me about it when I was ready to buy. So, contacting the company is always worth a shot, too.
sparklypancakes- I hope you get your dolls knee fixed! It's weird that both our Homme Ducan's are like that... Mine is strung awkwardly as well, his joins pop back into place really easy. I'm going to use some epoxy to stop the cracking until I can get some money to buy a new thigh joint. Kyrie Arashi- o.o I hope the crack doesn't keep going so the peice breaks out... As for finding someone to fix it, It might be better just to use the money I would spend fixing it and just buy a new thigh peice. Good luck with fixing you doll! Thanks for the advice guys! It helped!
Upon undressing my DoT boy yesterday.. I noticed a small crack about a cm long on his knee.. I dont know what to do about it.. Any suggestions.. I already contacted DoD about a replacement part.. just in case.. would boiling work? or is that only for dents?
Boiling only works for dents. Does the crack go all the way threw the joint or is it just a scratch? If it goes all the way threw the resin it could be a stress fracture and you might need to losen his strining to prevent any more damage. If you see any other cracks on the other joints it's possible that they where poured to thin, I've seen that before. They'd replace it if that where the case depending on how long you've had it. If it's just a scratch you can fill it in.
My boy's knee has a crack, and I fixed it with Superglue. You could also smear a little Milliput inside and out of the knee, sand it smooth, and then blush it if you want, but I have to say, my boy's knee has been fine with the glue.
The crack goes through.. its at the bottom of his thigh part.. its small about a cm long.. I dont think its a stress fracture.. his stringing isnt tight at all.. I did contacts DoD and they replied saying the replacement is $25 plus what ever shipping is T.T and the resin probably wont match. thanks for the advice on the super glue or milliput. I guess Ill look into that, ^^
I have the exact same thing on my Lahoo. It's on his right knee and goes all the way through his resin. Sounds like it's about the same place the crack is on your boy. I was going to post the same exact thing here.
Maybe it's some kind of design flaw? I guess I'm going to try the Superglue and hope it doesn't get any bigger.
maybe... =/ someone in the Dream of Doll Guest gallery had her Sha's right knee crack too. o.o I too am gonna try and use super glue..T.T im not paying $25 for a new thigh
i have to go buy super glue and hope i dont glue my fingers together like usual T.T let me know how yours goes ^^
I have Krazy Glue. Is that the same? I would imagine it is. Last time I used it I nearly glued my finger to my doll. Try explaining why you have a plastic doll hand stuck to your thumb. ^_^
I glued the crack this morning. I made a bit of a mess. I forgot how runny that glue was. X_X And I nearly glued two of my fingers together and I almost glued my doll to my shirt. Yeah, don't even ask. Hopefully it will work and I won't have to worry about the crack getting bigger.
I don't actually have any pictures of it. (But I can get them if you'd need it.) So anyway, I've had Orion for a month, max and just noticed on Wednesday night that there was a small crack on the thigh just where the knee joint is. The crack isn't big nor truly noticeable, however, when you move his leg the crack spreads then shrinks again. I have absolutely no idea how I managed that since I -never- leave him standing alone for fear he'll fall forward and smash his face. (He hasn't even been outside and for the most part is just a pretty, stationary member of the family.) What should I do? Am I able to glue it back together and hope the crack doesn't get bigger or should I perhaps email DOD about it? I don't know what to do and I was always so careful about where I left him that him becoming broken is quite the shock. Any suggestions? ~Halene
Try contacting DoD; they might be able to send you a replacement part, though it's likely you'll have to at least pay for shipping.
let me guess... is it the left leg? his right? my Sha has the EXACT some problem.. even after i was careful and stuff too.. It started small.. and i left it.. thinking it would be fine.. and then a few weeks ago i check it and the crack had alot! got bigger.. so i layered super glue on it.. and its been fine for now I thought about a replacement.. but since he had yellowed a bit.. the resin wouldnt match.. and they were gonna charge me $25 + shipping.. =/ I'd so layer super glue or see about getting some epoxy to reinforce the crack
Thank-you guys for the replies! You can't see it, but the crack goes right inside. I tried to get that picture, but the all came out super fuzzy. Mela: That was my first thought. I don't care about shipping prices, anything to have him fixed. (Or a new leg.) My problem is I'm a complete newbie when it comes to BJD's so I don't know how to restring him if I get a new leg... Lunyka: As requested... I know my picture are absolute crap. And not at all helpful. But these were the best from all the photos I took Kereneko: His right leg was the one damaged... Yeah I was just worried about the super glue thing. I thought it might eat through the resin or something... Is there a certain brand you'd recommend or avoid altogether? I really don't care about the price as long as he's fixed.
The same problem has occurred in some Minifee dolls, (thread here). There are some good suggestions and work-arounds in this thread that you might want to look at. As it seems to be a flaw in the construction of some dolls, getting a replacement part is most likely a temporary solution, the problem might easily re-occur in the new part, and therefor IMO repair/prevention is the more workable solution.
My lahoo came with crack that was about a half inch long going up his ankle. I think it may have be caused by being straight too tight. So i filled the crack in with epoxy , and made the strings looser. Its been about a year and the crack hasnt got bigger or reopened^^
ha! I just knew it would be the right leg! it seems like a flaw in the design or something.. cause quite a few people have had this same problem I dont think there is any brand to stay away from .. any super glue should be fine. Just coat the entire crack with a few layers of superglue and you should be fine
As the crack is at the joint, you will probably want to unstring that leg before fixing it with superglue to avoid getting any on the joint or the string as it could easily cause problems (elastic sticking to the doll, or the parts getting stuck together) and if you're not comfortable with the liquid super glue (I know I can't use the stuff without getting it on my fingers and getting stuck to what I'm handling no matter HOW careful I am!) the gel style should work just as well, with less 'runnyness' than the liquid stuff. The gel stuff works great, too...I used it on a crack between two of my boy's fingers and it's had no ill effects...besides being a tad shiny. A quick spray with MSC once the glue is completely dry should take away any shinyness, though, I just haven't bothered yet as the light shine doesn't bother me at all.
Thanks all guys! I'll just glue him back together then. (And get that replacement leg in case I mess up somehow. At least then It will kinda match his old one right?) But I'm going to have to do it without the unstringing, because otherwise I won't be able to re-string him. I really appreciate the help, guys. Thank-you!
