Esthetics Eyelashes: Tips on Removing, Applying, Glues & Types of Lashes

Aug 30, 2004

    1. I got my fancy new Volks gothic eyelashes in the mail, but it didn't occur to me that I'd also need some sort of adhesive as well. What works best? The instructions from Volks seem to indicate two little bottles of stuff, one from 3M and one about something else, that are to be used in the process. Can someone recommend a product to me? Ginger's eyes need natural protection from dust and foreign particles, quick!!!

    2. Regular white glue (school glue) works really well. It dries clear and holds the lashes on well if you get a good layer of it on. Also, if you ever want to change the lashes or redo the faceup, white glue comes off a whole lot easier than anything else.

      • x 1
    3. On the eyelash note, I have some human eyelashes that are cut in half, but they have an adhesive on them that I want off, due to the fact that it's on the opposite side I need the adhesive on. Is there anything that will take this eyelash adhesive off?

    4. Try watered down non-acetone nail polish remover. Has worked for me before ^_^

    5. What is the best way to remove and apply eyelashes?

What kind of glue should be used to apply them?

    6. This is a 2 part question about eyelashes.

      part 1
How do you get the glue off the eyelashes? I bought some eyelashes and they're stuck to the white plastic display thing, I can't get that glue off them.

      part 2
What kind of glue would you recommend to use to attach the new eyelashes to the doll?

...any other tips or hints would be greatly appreciated.
      Thanks,
      Am
PS I am hoping to fix my MSD Grace's eyebrows and finish her face in the next few weeks, that's why I'm asking.

    7. I think u can use methylated spirits to remove the glue. Also people have used regular PVA glue to attach lashes (it is white, but dries clear). It is strong enough, but also I think, water soluble or atleast can be peeled off if you want to remove the lashes.

      - Therese

    8. I used a little nail polish remover (I have the acetone kind) on a q-tip to get the glue off the eyelash. You don't need much.

I glued mine on with regular elmer's glue since that's what most people recommended. But now one eyelash has come unstuck, so I'm going to try something stronger since she just got that faceup a month or 2 ago ago. :|

    9. I used Aileen's Tacky Glue to put Kyan's eyelashes on...it seemed to work fine.

      AZ

    10. I used just normal white glue for sofie's. Use a tooth pic to apply it to the edge of the socket, then use a clean toothpick to press it in place. Use a thin layer, not too much, else it'll just take longer to dry. :3

I've got a DOD Bee-a on the way and I'd like to know what size eyelash to buy her? Do I just get regular size and cut them down..? Or what? X3 I'm so clueless when it comes to their eyelashes! Thanks!

    11. I just used regular size and cut them down, it works quite well.

    13. that is what i use as well XD they are kinda longer tho but they look nice i think ^__^ i do know on ebay they have doll lashes you can get for both upper and lower ^___^b

    14. I've been trying to give Cayenne some eyelashes since last night. But every time I go to glue them on, they stick to my finger, the toothpick, the paperclip, or whatever I use to push them down. Gah! I've put eyelashes on my Unnamed Porcelain Doll, but I don't remember it being this difficult. I think part of the problem are Cayenne's round Mesya eyes. Does anyone have any ideas on putting eyelashes? :?

    15. I definitely feel your pain on this one - when I met Sher I was telling her how I'm hopeless about eyelash application, so I, too, would appreciate any tips. I suspect that I've been going at it entirely the wrong way - everywhere I've read says to cut them down / cut them in half so they'll be the right size, so I wind up cutting off half of a fake lash, then not being able to find the piece I've cut off. *_* Methinks, uh, that I'm supposed to be using the other side, the side connected to the little bottom piece. hmph. really sharp there, Amanda.

    16. What kind of glue are you using? I use Elmer's Washable School Glue in No Run fomula and I love it. Here's how I do it:

First take the eyelash off the base it's on and hold it up to the doll eye socket to see how big *long, with the eye not lash length* it should be, then cut it accordingly.
With the Elmer's glue I pour out, on a paper plate (or other disposable flat surface), a small puddle of glue *about half the size of a dime*.
Then, with a pin, I dip the tip *metal part* of the pin into the glue and pick up just a little bit of glue *about the amount of a rain drop*.
Then I spread the glue on the TOP base of the eyelash *the part that's going to be stuck to the doll*
Now *holding the lashes by their tips, away from the glued part*, I stick the glued edge to the inside of the doll eye socket and with a clean pin, push the edge onto the resin. If the pin sticks, twist it in your fingers so it coems unstuck.

Just wait a few minutes for the glue to dry and then do the other eye ^_^

    17. Hm...I almost did the same thing. After getting the strip length, I used Elmer's white all-purpose glue, put a droplet on my lapboard that I use as an art table. I lightly spread a layer on the rim of what, I guess, would be the upper eyelid. I waited for it to get tacky, and stuck the eyelash strip's sewn edge into the glue. Instead of a pin, i've been using a paper clip. (Unbent, of course.) I'll try your idea tonight. I'm thinking of getting those tinsel-y eyelashes they have at Hot Topic. Thanks for your ideas!

    18. My tip for using adult sized lashes trimmed down is that since the adhesive is on the wrong side, a little bit of acetone on a q-tip will rub it away so you have a non-sticky surface to start with.

    19. I had been wondering this for a while. Would it be possible to use fake eyelashes like the ones you can buy at the drugstore for your dolls? I am sure that some trimming would be necessary. Has anyone tried this?

I want to get my Stella some eyelashes and I'd much rather pick up a $2 pair locally if that were possible.

      Thanks!

    20. I know there's some people here that do, it's entirely possible. They WILL end up quite a bit thicker, even with trimming, so you'd want to get the thinnest pair possible (since they're human size) and cut them down. ^^

    21. After you trim the width and length, you'll want to feather the tips. Otherwise they will look blunt and awkward and sometimes unevenly cut. Just point the very tips of your sharp scissors perpendicular to the lashes and randomly snip snip. This will thin out the ends of the lashes and make them more natural.

    22. I've only used human eyelashes trimmed down. They come in a ton of styles and colors, but some work better than others. And you'll probably have to use a bit of acetone on a q-tip to take off the eyelash glue, since it's on the wrong side.

I would like a better option than white glue. It's not my favorite. :cow
But, alas, that seems to be what works the best.

    23. I used human eyelashes for Kai, and they work wonderfully! Somehow the edge fits perfectly in his eyes without sticking out anywhere. My only complaint is that they have a tendency to get messed up rather easily. I'm about to replace the lashes on his left eye, because somehow the top ones ended up getting bent and falling out in one place because of me fooling around with them too much. ;_; I used white glue and it worked wonders, just stuck the eyelashes in with a toothpick and let them dry.

    24. Thanks for any help! (should I use like a toothpick to apply it?.... One of mine is just coming up on one edge)

      Appreciate it!

      Judy

    25. All I know is that white glue sux. XD I use it and it keep comming off after some time >.<

    26. Actually, I used white glue to put Kai's eyelashes on and it took me 10 minutes to get it all off! Oo;; It wouldn't budge. Maybe the different types of white glue?

I think this was asked somewhere...?

    27. I use Tacky glue from the craft store in the gold bottle. Never had any problems, and they stay on good.

    28. I used white glue (school glue, Elmer's brand), it stayed on nicely, but what i was suprised about is that when I went to take them off it came off REALLY easily, so I don't think they would have stayed much longer.

There's a thicker glue called tacky glue that works pretty well from what I've heard. I had some before I got my doll and I used it to glue feathers onto other things and it works very well. I'm not sure of the brand's name but it comes in a gold and white bottle.

    29. I used the "Tacky" glue that comes in a silver bottle from craft and fabric stores. Used several toothpicks and they are sticking just fine. I've even lightly tugged on them and they don't budge (though they'd probably come off if I really pulled)

    30. I just found out the glue for eyelashes I got today is...BLACK! :crushed

now, I'm wondering...is there any chance I can actually use it on my dolls?
I've never done a customization and I don't want to make a mess.

I can't even take it back to the shop because I opened the bottle :|
silly me didn't even check, man... *_*

    31. i use elmer's white glue.

becuase knowing that it WILl come off easy, is somthing i don't worry about. I put it on with a toothpick.

lats time i reglued his eyelashes they where comming off was when i restringed him. so the fact it comes off doe snto bug me, I'd rather have to re glue them in a lot then let it take me forever to get them off

    32. I use superglue to hold in the eyelashes. ^_^ I find it very easy to use since the glue is so sticky. They come off easily when I want to remove them, and my eyelashes actually remained in pretty good condition. ^_^;;

I use eyelashes meant for people in my boy as well, but I don't bother trimming cos I like the length. ^_^

    33. I used human eyelashes on my doll-white glue to attach them.

I cut them choppy and angled and i LOVE THEM~ definately worth the two bucks i paid for them- I would definately pay for that over any kind of more expensive doll lashes.

    34. So, if I were going for a thick, blunt semi-cartoonish look (similar to the sculpted on eyelashed of the unoa), Human lashes would be good?

    35. I think that'd be something you'll have to find out yourself by trying different eyelashes, trimming them, etc. Unless someone out there who has already achieved the look you're going for and can tell you for certain which type of eyeslashes to use. *grin*

Though erm...I think you're thinking of the er...Unoss perhaps? The Unoa have no sculpted eyelashes on them. ^_^

      ~ seph

    36. Oh! You're right, I meant Unoss... <XD I'm a sucker for Unoss's scultped eyelashes. :: laughs ::

    37. I used human eye lashes in both my Elf Lishe and my Vamp Elf Lishe.. (pics on site) and have to say they look fab....

      :daisy

    38. So I have a Bluefairy Jerome (yay!!) and he has no eyelashes, but his DOD wig came with two sets, so I thought ah ha! I can just try those on.

The only problem is .... they seem to be sticky on the wrong side? I tried putting them on him and they curl into his eye rather than away from it. What am I missing? I understand that human lashes have the sticky on the wrong side but why would a doll company do that? Any thoughts?

    39. Hmm... the only thing I can think to suggest is to stick them on the outside of the eyelid instead of the inside?

    40. Human fake eyelashes are sticky on the wrong side too, as they are meant to be put on top of your eyelashes.

For people eyelashes, take the sticky off the wrong side with acetone, and put white glue or tacky glue (a kind of thicker white glue) on the correct side for the doll.
It ought to work with these other lashes, too.

      Ann in CT

    41. mine were like that too, but i just ignored the sticky part and got some glue and toothpicks and stuck them on there correctly. worked out great..

    42. That sticky stuff is not meant to be a re-usable adhesive...it just keeps them on the little plastic card they usually come on...it's a pain in the butt, but you should remove it & then use a toothpick to put a little glue on the correct side and then glue them right on the edge or very slightlyunderneath the top lid.

    43. For some bizarre reason I am just now looking at the stuff that came with Vincent. I've had him for a week and just now found his eyelashes in a little baggie. I know the promo pictures were different. So now that I've found the elusive things. How the heck do I apply them?!? I re-read the SDFAQ and it tells how to change the eyes, but not the lashes. I don't even know how to put fake lashes on myself...

    44. What I do is this.

      1) Apply a thin layer of white glue to the underside of the eye. Leave it for a few minutes and let it go tacky.
      2) Get a toothpick :)
      3) Which way up you place the lashes is a matter of personal preference. Carefully apply the lashes to your line of glue, using the toothpick as much as possible to push the lashes into place. Try not to do too much with your hands, as they tend to spread the glue everywhere.
      4) Once they're in place, Leave and DO NOT fiddle. I'm terrible for this. Don't fiddle with them. Leave them for an hour or so. I know this seems excessive, but it's best to make sure that glue is completely dry!
      5) Put those eyes back in!

    45. how do you get the stick stuff off the eyelash that's on the wrong side. without damsageding the eyelash.

    46. Acetone (100% - no nailpolish remover) or methylated spirits should get the old eyelash glue off if its on the wrong side.

      - Therese

    47. I generally just leave it - using toothpicks means there's less for it to stick to anyway.

    48. Has anyone here used Monique Eyelashes? They have great prices, averaging between $1.25 and $2.00 (US), but I'm stumped by the sizing.

I want to put lashes on my Sleeping Soo head, and I was tempted to use her wig size (8/9) as a guide, but most of the eyelashes appear to be size 12 and up. I did find one pair size 6, but I'm worried they might be too small.

Anyone know how to figure out the correct size?

      -M

    49. I'm not sure about the Monique brand, but the Kemper ones are measured by mm. You can get the Kemper ones in 20mm, which should be a good fit (you might have to trim them a tiny bit). The Paula singles and the Double Alternate lashes are both 20mm. The Baby ones are 17mm, and I'm going to get a pair of those for my DoD. With any eyelashes, you might have to trim the length of the lash or the strip to fit or to taste.

    50. I just bought some eyelashes on e-bay.
I wondered how to make them stick.
      What to use as adhesive?
Earlier I recieved some eyelashes from cancan_jseries.
And they came with a little tube of adhesive.
Does all eyelashes come with that??
      :?

    51. Nope, not all eyelashes come with extra adhesive. Most of them have a little sticky part to them, but often the sticky side is useless because in putting eyelashes on the inside of the upper eyelid, it's facing the wrong way. I use Aleene's tacky glue to put on eyelashes, and I think most other people around here do too - it works great and does not cement the eyelashes - they will stay on, but you can pull them off later without destroying them. Aleene's tacky glue is available in most sewing or craft stores and also at, I think, places like Rite Aid.

    52. I think we have it here.
But I`m not sure I know what glue you mean.
      Like normal white glue?
      Y`know.
The one we used in school, when we made stuff for our parents, right?
But do the eyelashes come off again?
      Unharmed?

    53. That would be the type you want! ^__^ It holds the eyelashes amazingly welll. Usually when i want to remove them i just yank them off and thus destory the eyelashes doing so. If you want to keep them intact, then you should be able to do so by wetting down the glue to loosen and remove it.

    54. I use Casco's "Vannbasert Skolelim" for eyelashes and such. It works wonderfully. I think I bought it at some Norli or the other, but I'm sure any bookstore or such will have some sort of white glue.

    55. Sephirossa, you can use sticky-tape to hold the eyelashes in place as well. Makes them easier to put in, and also easier to remove, plus they are less likely to be damaged when removed, so you can reuse them. Another benefit is that if they are too long, with the stickytape, you can just place them further into the eye-socket, rather than cut them down.

If you choose to go with the glue, just apply it with a toothpick, wait till it goes a bit tacky and then put the lashes on. However I find this method frustrating and I give blessings to Jen in Sydney, who told me about the tape..

    56. What kind of tape and where can I buy it?
      Hey cool!
      You live in Australia?

    57. Umm any kind really. I used regular masking tape, just cut it down to size. Also you could use the 3M/Scotch "Magic Tape" (I know you can buy that back home in book/stationary stores). You don't need double sided or anything, just regular old stickytape.

 Yeah, I went to uni here, and met an Australian guy, brought him home for a year, then came back to Oz for more study, and now I'm here on a 2-year spouse visa :D :D

    58. *whines* I got the eyelashes I ordered... but theyre human sized. >_< Website did NOT say that. They specifically had them listed at Super Dollfie eyelashes. Anyway... -.- How do I go about trimming these? They obviously need to be cut in like... half... every way. >_< Pleeaaase dont say lash by lash.. or I may very well die. @_@

      Edit: these are the lashes I got - http://cancan.myfiles.biz/jenny/eshop/misc.html the very bottom ones in brown. Theyre big! ;.;

    59. I use human lashes on my dolls, but instead of cutting them down, when I glue them I push the excess back into the eye well and glue it to the inside... if that makes sense? It's kinda hard to explain XD;

    60. They're all like that, thats how they're sold! :D Just take your scissors and trim them to your taste. ^^
