I'd like to make a pair of horns, but I don't want to mod the horns directly onto the head. I'd prefer something that was removeable. I was thinking of making the horns, then drilling a small hole towards the bottom of them and threading through a strip of clear elastic, or a ribbon or something? My other idea was taking a cloth elastic band and pushing spikes through it, like the ones on dog collars. Then, you would mold the horns around the spikes. I personally don't want the traditional devil horn costume horns. I don't want them to be red and I'd like to be a bit more detailed than that. Does anyone have any other ideas?
you could also take some strong magnets and plant them inside the head and on the bottom of the horns to they're less obtrusive?
thats what I was thinking too, magnets should be pretty easy to attach into a head, just make sure you get strong ones so they don't fall off
i used snaps to attach kitsune ears to a wig for the doll i recently modded, that way the wig can be worn with or without the ears and look just fine... magnets would work too, i'd just make sure to possibly paint or seal over the ones that would be in contact with the resin to keep them from possibly leaving marks.
You can use Tacky glue. It comes off with water, and if your doll decides to take hea-first spill, they just snap off and don't break and your doll won't get damaged either. Plus if they snap off, you just re-wet them and stick them back on.
We've been thinking about this. Our plan is to sculpt the horns onto a steel rod, drill holes in the headcap (or above his ears in an area normally covered by hair) insert the rod into the head and tighten with a nut. I haven't gone shopping for parts yet, but I am assuming I can get rods(bolts perhaps) that have the threading to screw the nut onto.
I was going to suggest the elastic idea, I would suggest molding them with a hole though, you can just poke the end of a pencil through the clay or sculpy, it will shrink somewhat, and then string the elastic through. I am planning on making them this way for my boy.
Magnets. Seriously. They're strong, they're cheap, and you don't have to drill holes in your doll's head.
Have you seen the horns from the dollfie part of cosworx.com? I'm planning on buying some... I have the kittyears (matching human and dollie pairs) and I love them. X3 Edited for the link to the horns... X3 http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?productid=26205&cat=2414&page=1
I saw some awesome horns (aimee's possibly?) that had snaps to attach to the wig...looked like a great idea.
My idea only applies if you don't want the horns someplace where the wig would cover, like on the forehead or something. Because one of my dolls needs a little spiral horn on his forehead someday, I've given this a bit of thought. What I plan to do is to make the little horn out of sculpey, bake it, and then simply attach it with a dot of hot glue. I've used hot glue on my dolls many times before, and when you don't want it anymore, you just peel it off. It doesn't damage anything.
Not my site, but I found a link to this place on another forum I frequent and thought it might be helpful to someone here These are made for modifying Breyer or similar model horses, but they're made of cast resin (not sure what kind) and not too expensive! Most of it is for 'stablemates' size and would really only be helpful for tinies, but there's one pair of 'classic' size folded wings listed now that would probably be a great fit for MSD sized angels! There's also unicorn horns in both sizes that someone creative could probably make great use of, and best of all they're mostly quite inexpensive! Not sure how heavy they are, but the small ones could probably work great for modding in a Yo-Tenshi style magnet system Hope this can help someone! http://www.abbeyincstudios.com/catalog.htm
I've been looking for something like this for ages :3, thanks a lot for the link. I think some of the spread wings will look really cute on a SD.
Just keep the sizes in mind--this stuff is all really little! I've been a Breyer collector for years, and the biggest horse in my collection is probably only 12 inches from nose to tail, so the biggest wings on there are 7" from top to tip, and the spread styles only seem to come in the smaller size of 3 1/2" base to tip. But I'd love to see anything anyone does with these! Makes an MSD angel even more tempting, for me....
I decided to make some horns this weekend, I made 3 unicorn horns, with a hole in the bottom through which elastic is strung. The problem for some people would be the color of elastic, if your doll does not have a white or black wig. I will post pictures of the horn this week.
MareOfNight -- you can get clear beading elastic at most craft stores, and it works great for unobtrusive attachments. i use it for wings and tails.
I made Lailah a pair of horns using fimo, I just poked a hole through before baking them and threaded string through them to hold them in place. It works especially well with a floofy wig since the string/ribbon/what ever's easier to hide. My plan's to make a mold and cast them out of resin for a better finish though since the fimo just looks... crap and I dont want to have to varnish them. http://www.arsenic-spider.com/BJD/horns/hornsv204.jpg http://www.arsenic-spider.com/BJD/horns/hornsv205.jpg I tried a prototype pair before and hotglued a hair clip to each but the horns where too heavy and just wouldn't stay in place. =(
Leeke world has a pretty fool proof way to put horns or ears ontop of wigs without messing up your doll. http://www.leekeworld.us/ Look under the "ect" section. You don't even have to buy these. Just make yours to work the same way. Unless your putting them on the front of the head where there is no wig, then try taping the magnets inside the head. Worked for a pair of robot ears I made.
Blaknite made horns for her Recall, since he's supposed to be a dragon. She drilled two very small holes into his headcap, and for the horns she sculpted them around the elastic out of sculpy and baked it. Then, she just threads the elastic through the wig and the holes in the headcap and tie the elastic together on the inside. They're awesome, and never come off, and help keep her Recall's way too-big-wig on . *nods*
Ah, I'm back, again! I'm full of questions about modding BJDs, but I just feel bad about asking so many, so sorry if I annoy you all! Anywho, onto the question - the character my CP Abadon is meant to be requires his face to be modified, for him to have three horns above his left eyebrow (I will try to get my scanner working so I can scan a better sketch of the horns, if needs be). The lovely Kiyakotari recommended a few methods to me a couple of months ago, involving sculpting with Sculpey/Apoxie directly onto his face, or attaching them with glue (thank you very much, by the way! I'll be holding your advice in my head for another one of my dolls I've got planned), but the fact that his horns are rather, well, fiddly (especially the largest one, with the ring-like section on it like an eyebrow piercing) is something that is a cause of concern for me. I don't want to sculpt directly onto his face, for fear of the horns breaking as I carry him to meets and the like, only to end up with broken horns stuck on his face forever, and I'm not sure how good glue will be - which is why I started his thread. If any modders have any advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated - this is my first time modding a doll. My Abadon is my first BJD, and I'm somewhat worried that I will end up damaging him in one way or another that will be difficult or impossible to repair. Thank you for coping with me!
If it's possible, perhaps you would like to reinforce the horns with wire? Thin, flexible metal wire, if it's available?
I'd have to reccomend the glue method. Because the horns will be so delicate, breakage will definitely be a problem, which is why a permanent epoxy wouldn't be a good idea, like you said. At least with glueing it on, if the horn broke, you could always whip out another premade one and glue it right back on. That's what I did when I had a doll that needed a unicorn-esque horn. I used hot glue.
You could try mounting rare earth magnets inside his head and on the bases of the horns, then you could just pull them off while traveling and then stick them on when you get to where you are going. (You can find rare earth magnets of all sizes on ebay.) You can put some partial holes on the inside of the head with a dremel, that don't go all the way through, that way the magnet will be near the surface of the forehead, but won't show when the horns aren't there. You can also try just mounting the magnets inside with Apoxy Sculpt, but you'd have to experiment to see if the magnets would be strong enough to hold through the thickness of the resin. Or, you can peg the horns, but then you'd have to drill holes through your boy's head.
Hmmm, thank you for all the help, guys! All these ideas seem really good to me, but I'm still not sure which one to pick. Glueing them to his face seems like the best bet for now, as I imagine that if I get a little more confident, I can try another method of attaching them without fear of the glue doing any damage. strangeangels: I was thinking of using rare earth magnets when I started pondering how to get his horns to work, but since they will all be in such close proximity of each other (six magnets in total, 3 sets of two poles, I assume) would I have problems with the magnets repelling one another on his face? I was considering pegging, too - but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try it, just yet.
I was just wondering, how would one go about adding horns to a head? Like little daemon horns? Thanks
There are many threads here detailing just that. ^__^ I don't have the links, but a simple search will do. Also try looking up wings, the attatchment ideas in those threads are useful as well. Next time before asking, try poking around a bit, our forums have a wealth of information. ^__^ Hope that helps a little bit! Good luck!
I decided to bump this up because despite Searching the forums for some help on attaching horns I stupidly didn't find any -_-; I had some horns and ears made for my boy awhile back and have just now gotten around to attempting to attach them. Because I wanted them to look as real as possible rather than using ribbon or elastic to attach them ( as I've seen suggested ) and because they have to be able to go through his wig and could therefore not be sculpted directly onto him I decided to go with the option of rare earth magents which I was told were very strong. However, he hasn't even worn them properly with wig on yet and I'm already finding the horns and ears are too heavy! I'm quite saddened by this as it took quite awhile to comission these horns and I'd hate not be to able to use them So I'm wondering if perhaps someone out there with more knowledge about these types of magnets could possibly help me out, or if there are any other methods I am just not thinking of. I'd figured that if these magnets could hold some of those heavy wings out there without a problem then they'd be able to withstand the weight of these horns ( which really aren't very big at all ).
Do you plan on changing his wig often? Maybe put the horns on a ribbon or other non stretch headband support, poke the horns through the wig, and with the magnets combined with the ribbon, it should have enough support.
I have used rare earth magnets specifically for attaching horns before. What I have found that it's not so much the weight as it is the distribution of the weight. It the horns are too long, for example, they might tip and the magnets may not be able to hold. The same amount of weight distributed closer to the head is easier for the magnet to hold. I HIGHLY recommend rare earth magnets. Place the magnets under the wig, rather than under the head cap. You can even use tape to keep them in place on the wig, so they don't shift when you take the wig on and off and can still be removed if you want to change the location. When purchasing the magnets pay attention to size, strength, and the pole location. The wrong pole location can equal disaster. Honestly though, it depends on the distribution of the weight and the size of magnet you can fit at the base. I hope that helped?
Ah, his wig that I have him wearing now is pretty permanent so I suppose there wouldn't be any problem cutting slits in it. I've just never actually seen any examples of the ribbon technique ( though I have heard it often enough ) and I can't seem to wrap my head around how it works. If all else fails though I might give it a shot as I'd hate to be in constant fear of them constantly falling off. And arichan, yup, that does make sense His horns are pretty long but when looking at them after reading your post the base of them are certainly much thicker then the tips ( they are sculpted to resemble ox horns ). Ah, I've hot glued them to his headcap, underneath the wig so at least I did that correctly. These are pretty small magnets however so I think that's probably what I should look into.
Ok, this might be a silly question but I keep seeing horns for dolls here and there and I would like to get some. My question is how do they attach? Iknwo part of that, magnets, but would I have to have a special doll head with metal plate or...?
Do you mean the horns like the Soom monthly dolls? If so, those horns are not individually available for retail.
Nope. You just put magnets inside the head and the ones outside attract the ones inside and keep the horns on. Permanent mods of this sort would probably require drilling and/or epoxy to fix the magnets in the head. Edit: Also, in some cases the magnets can just go under the wig, depending on where you want the horns to sit on the head.
I should have been more specific! Sorry. The ones you can find on Ebay if you search 'horns dollfie' the first two curly ones that come up, those are what I had in mind. Now I am perturbed that I cannot remember the actual doll site I saw them on.
Oooh, I see. This is good to know! I presume the horns would come with magnets on the end and ones to stick into the head. I will investigate this more! The seller I asked on ebay about this just replies 'magnets' and when I asked for more info they never replied. Thanks.
You can also stick the magnets inside the dolls wig when you attach horns - that works extremely well, particularly with the small horns.
I had never thought of that, well, actually I did, hehe, but I thought it wouldn't work. Thank-you for that information
Yeah the ebay dollfie horns are just by magnents...some companies make little magnet wells so the glue dosen't go every where. Otherwise it would just glue them to the inside head-cap. Just remember, cause I found out the hard way, the magnets need to be put in "upside down" so they attract each other. I would try the DOA Marketplace thread. You can usually find horns (OOAK and Company made). You can even find the SOOM horns in the marketplace sometimes.
Thanks. I cannot acess the Marketplace yet but when I can I will be searching for horns among other goodies. Good tip about the magnets. I probably would have glued them on the wrong way too. :P
I was so careful about it...I was worried about them being the same magnetic pole...but I forgot about flipping them on the head cap! UGH about not being able to access the marketplace...just keep posting Just count yourself lucky...the marketplace can be a dangerous dangerous place...oh how I know about that and so does my wallet. If you can bare the wait, I would until you can get into the marketplace. There are more horns in there than on ebay.
I've commissione some custome devil hors to Jisatsu in marketplace, onec you have access to this area you can also choose to commissione, mine turns out stunning see: Devil's horns
Here's a link to the Leeke horns nanlady mentioned: http://www.leekeworld.com/En/Product/p_list.asp?B_catalog_num=27 The easiest way to attach them is to glue the magnets to the horns, then just tape the "inner" magnet to the doll's headcap underneath his/her wig. ^_^ Good luck!
A quick question about attaching the magnets to resin. What sort of epoxy would work best? My doll's magnet in his headcap came unglued and I need to scrape out whatever sort of glue Resin soul used and re set the magnet in it's well. I have also considered gluing magnets to the dome of his headcap to make horns myself using sculpy or another product. I'd imagine this method can be used for wings as well. Which is another thing I've seriously considered. So many options for customizing. Now, to figure it out!
I have some magnetic horns. One magnet is in the horns, the other magnet goes under the wig. So the horns only get attached to the wig. I think the horns are from Leeke?
Hiya iSparrow Oh, I see how that works. Interesting. I will look at Leeke to see if they have any. I know there have to be more out there than the ones I saw on Ebay...but where?! :P
I believe you can also buy sheep horns from Resinsoul--they go with a doll called Dan, but you can email Resinsoul and buy just the horns. I bet it would be easy to make your own out of Sculpey, too, and glue the magnets in yourself.
My only doll with horns actually has them permanently modded to his forehead with epoxy. Fine if they always have horns and don't have a wig that gets in the way of course (he just doesn't have any hair full stop). I've seen some that attach to the wig as hair clips and some that just tie on beneath a wig. I might end up just making my own magnetic pair from clay for my puki, that way isn't too bad either.
I am getting a ResinSoul Bao soon, and I am interested in creating him horns. Could anyone tell me what sort of clays would be best for this? Preferable air dry clays, since I don't want to have to stick it in the oven. >< Also, where can you get those little round magnets for attaching the horns to his head?
The little round magnets that are best are the Rare Earth Magnets, which you can usually get at Walmart, or any craft store. As for the material for horns, I like using two part epoxy. It's air drying, gets super hard, and fairly light when dry - I made ears for my puki using it, and they worked perfectly.
I get mine from www.sculptingstudio.com (Aves Apoxie Sculpt... though it looks like they might be out of stock on the 1-pound and 4-pound kits). They also have some great sculpting and filing tools as well. You can also order direct from the company at www.avesstudio.com instead. Also, if you need stronger magnets than you can find at craft stores, I recommend www.kjmagnetics.com for those. No minimum order and the magnets work great.
