Adding a Rotating thigh joint on your doll

May 23, 2008

    1. This is a project I'd been wanting to try for some time now, and I finally had the time and courage to try it out. I wanted to get more posability out of my boy to allow him to have a greater variety of sitting poses and such. It ended up working pretty well, so I'm quite happy! :D

There's a full tutorial of how I did it in the Tutorial Group on Resinality, and also in my LJ.

      Some of the progress shots:

Sawing the legs in two to make the new joint.

Drilling out the inside of the legs to create a socket to insert a piece of PVC piping that will be attached to the top portion of the leg and extend down into the lower leg, allowing it to rotate around.

After the drilling was done and checking the fit for the pipe. :3

And, using epoxy to permanently secure the new addition into place.

The final result! This was a pretty labor-extensive process, but quite fun to try out! XD Anyway, now some examples of what he can do with the new joints. :D

He could actually do this before, but without the new thigh joint, it would dislodge the leg at the hip, making him extremely prone to falling over to one side or another extremely easily without support. Since the leg is now being dislodged at the new thigh joint, he stays stable and upright with ease and without any need of support! :3

These sorts of poses were almost completely impossible before without the rotating thigh joint. XD

      (Continued in the new post!)

To get a more natural-looking pose out of him, his knees still need to be dislodged a little bit, but not enough to look too unsightly. (If he has double-jointed knees, it would look way better, but still pretty good even without them!)

He can now also do this extremely easily! :D Without needing to lean a heavy arsed book on his back to keep him upright and posed properly!

This pose does cause a pretty big gap where the new joint is, however, But since my boys always wear pants, it won't be visible and as such I'm not worried by this. ^^

I can also shove his entire torso forward to make him slouch over his legs without loosing any stability or with any need of outside support as well. Which makes me a very happy camper indeed. XD

      Anyway, hope you guys find this helpful! Fee free to attempt this on your own, or ask any questions about it. (Though do try at your own risk, because I can't be held responsible if something goes wrong!) XD;

      Thanks for looking!

    3. I've actually finished doing this mod to an F-doll body. I am very pleased with the results! It took a little more sanding because of the way the elastic holes were sitting, which were completely off center...
Thanks so much for posting and helping me out with my question Hitasura! I may end up doing this mod to ALL my boys that don't already have a rotating thigh joint!

    4. Hmmm, will this enable him to sit suwarikko style? o-o I'm thinking yes,but I thought it was safer to ask. XD

    5. i may be pretty stupid, but i can't find the tutorial on your LJ, nor can i view it on Resinality :/ i am registered on both.

    6. I wonder, what kind of pipe did you use to put insde the thigh? For example, what kind of material it was on so on... Thanks! :)

    7. Amazing! You said you used 3/4" pvc pipe, is this for an SD?

    8. i was lucky enough to have both of my dolls with this joint
the type 2 DOC bodies have this
the girl as just a rounded upper thigh
and the boy actually has a totally separate ball
though both of them when you sit them in a fetal position
      you don't get that gap
i wouldn't know how to fix it in your case
unless you got a large enough marble or something
      or clay......

if i had my camera i would supply pictures
      but i do not

it is a very useful mod though.
i hope someone finds a way to get rid of the gap
i'm sure lots of people would appreciate it ^^

    9. I've been wanting to do this for a long time, but I was going to use something like Sculpty and do a sculpted knobby type of thing, I never though of using pvc pipe. that probably would work better

it's not letting me access either page, I wanted to see step by step how you did this!

    10. Has anyone done this with a unoa, yet? I want my girl to be able to pose better.

    11. I'm considering it, but if you know anyone who has please post the link!

edit; I looked in her joint, and the thigh looks -really- hollow so I'm not sure if it would work.

    12. I'm really considering doing this on my dollmore girl, you make it look so easy and your lad poses beautifully now. Thank you ever so much for the share.

    13. So none of these pictures are here anymore :( I'd really like to see how to go about this. Any updates?

    14. It would be wonderful if those pictures could be reuploaded, I'm very curious! The livejournal link is dead too :(
