How do I repair Broken Fingers?

Jul 31, 2005

    1. I just got my first SD13 boy in the mail today and unfortunately, one of his little fingers broke off during shipping. I know that you can repair these, so what methods are best and is there anything I need to watch out for?

    2. If you got him through an actual Volks dealer--either directly from Volks, or from Domuya, or Doll & Hobby--you should contact them and see if they can get you a replacement hand. You'll probably have to send in the broken hand, though, or maybe the entire doll...so not sure if that's worth it to ya, but that's a possible route!

If you got him through the secondary market: If you have the finger that was broken off, I've heard of people using super glue. :daisy Or if for whatever reason you can't repair it or just want a new pair of hands, you could browse Yahoo Japan auctions...optional SD13 boy hands do pop up on there occasionally, though if you've got a beauty white doll it'll be a lot harder to find a pair of optional hands.

    3. Ryuen's (DoD Si) ring finger got broken in an incident at AX and a friend of mine used super glue to reattach it (I didn't have any handy or I would have).

There is only a very fine line where the finger was reattached, if you need me to I can post a picture (probably late tomorrow because I'll be gone all day). The line is fine enough I didn't feel the need to get another set of hands to replace the one that broke.

      Hope that helps.

    4. Thank you guys! Unfortunately I did get the doll through a second hand dealer, so there is no chance of sending it back to the company I bought it from. I'll try the super glue to fix him up unless somebody else comes up with some suggestions. I don't need a picture, either, since I've seen other broken hands before. Thanks to everyone for your help!

    5. I was stitting at my desk at work with my sharmin doll and I moved her rigtht hand and noticed a finger had snaped off ... :shudder
      :( :shudder :shudder :shudder
I need to find were to get her some new hands and fast or a way maybe to glue it back I still have the finger with me

      please help

    6. i had only fixed one broken finger for my friend so i don't have all that much experience either, anyway, what I did was I drilled a tiny hole at the cross section of the finger. Both the broken off segemnt as well as the main hand. Then I put a small piece of metal inside(about the right size fit for the hole) and make sure the the finger can fit back without having the metal too long/short (it'll take sometime to adjust and lots of cutting of metal) Then I use a really really strong super glue to stick the metal piece to one side, followed by spreading some glue on the metal and the area surrounding it. i then put the finger back and wipe off any excess glue.

Did a little sanding around the side and there is only a very thin line left where the injury was.

That little metal piece is there to prevent the finger from sliding when pressured and breaking agiain if you are wondering

      hope it helps ^_^

    7. I bought her a new set of DOD hands and they worked just fine even though she is a Dollmore MSD

    8. okay no i haven't melted my fingers but i have accidently broken the fingers on my baby Liadan. DoD Too for resin reference. it's a nice clean break luckily and i have both fingers so it's not going to be hard gluing them back on..

      however..

what glue should be used? I was simply thinking craft glue or a standard hot glue gun but i had it pointed out that those might have a bad effect and i should ask first.

so here i am. what types of glue do you recommend?

    9. super glue works, craft glue works and it soaks off, even hot glue w ould be fine, it peels off pretty easy.

    10. I have been doing some reasearch on just that, at the moment I do know you can use crazy glue to bond them back in place. But it is not the best thing to use as it is not as strong as the resin. Another option is epoxy while it does not cure as fast as crazy glue it is stronger. So if you can get something to hold the fingers in the right spot I recommend an epoxy, at least the 12 min type or longer. Otherwise you can use the crazy glue, but just be careful you don't put to much pressure on those fingers.

    11. well superglue, crazyglue all that kind will do but if you can't stand of having a broken finger and you are willing to pay a little, you can always ask for After Service at DOD and get a new set of hands with some extra charge.

    12. one of my boys has a broken finger and i'm having trouble getting the thing back on (in the meantime- i am ordering new hands). i have always had trouble with epoxy because i have a very bad tremor and can't hold the two parts together very well. superglue, i have heard, is not that strong. will hot glue work? i did a preliminary test and found i could get it on straight and peel the excess off but it broke again really easily. help?

      thank you,
      a noob.

    13. Are you putting glue on both pieces or just one?

    14. i was putting glue on just one :blush i bought the glue gun yesterday. let me guess...

    15. If you put glue on both objects, they'll stick together much better. There's a term for it, but I forgot it. ^^;

      Hopefully that'll fix your problem.

    16. thank you! and thank you for not mocking me! :blush

    17. hot glue may not stick to smooth surfaces...and tends to warm up and become unglued in warm weather.
I would use a two part epoxy or super glue. then cover with a thin layer of aves sculpt

    18. I vote superglue, hotglue peels off much too easy

    19. My Danbi did a nose dive during a group shoot and lost a finger. My husband glued it on with Superglue and it worked great.

    20. if the Hot glue doesn't work (which I doubt it will) since I find it doesn't stick to resin that well. I have tremors in my hands too, so I know exactly what you mean. (faceups are pretty hard to do too). I glued the finger back on my girl's hand with epoxy. Here is what I did. I mixed up a little. I got some masking tape, first on the back side I taped it so the finger was held in the right place, put the hand on the table that way I could steady my self and apply the glue. Once I got it in there I added some more tape to keep the finger as tight as possible in place. Then left it over night for a good bond. next day I scraped off any extra glue off the resin. What is nice with epoxy is it's semi plastic like, and not rock hard like super glue. I have not had any problems since. I have since replaced her hand with a new one.

    21. Wow same thing happened to me! Thanks for all the info guys, this will help me too!!

    22. oop. well, i already tried the hot glue (again)- or more accurately, the husband tried it. then we let it dry until now, and the finger seems fairly set, although i had him reinforce it with tape (so it looks like a little bandaid, how cute :-p ) if it comes apart again i'll buy another kind of glue, meanwhile am ordering new hands... thanks everybody for your help...

    23. i'd use superglue or wood glue

      hot glue kinda pops off easy ^^;

    24. There's also that EO400 or whatever it is...basically it's like epoxy, only in the form of superglue. I used it to glue findings on my custom made lightsaber(ie: metal to metal), so I'd imagine something like it would definately help with resin.

    25. Where do you find Epoxy? I'm not that familiar with it...

    26. I got my jewelry epoxy at my local Hobby Lobby in the jewelry section. You can find different types of epoxy(such as two part clay type) at a hardware store.
I wouldn't suggest the clay type, as it dries hard and gray colored.
The kind I bought at Hobby Lobby is sorta liquid and dries clear. ^_^

    27. Epoxy is probably your best bet for strength and stability, could you ask someone else to do it maybe?

    28. I've had my little Bambicrony baby for only a week and two of her fingers have broken off. One, (which is actually Bambicrony-specific) is this a common problem with tinies & Bambicrony? :(

Two, what is the strongest yet least aesthetically displeasing way to reattach the fingers? I still have them both and I want to reglue them. Elmer's? Epoxy glue?

Any help would be reaaaaally appreciated. :...(

    29. Superglue/crazyglue, actually.

Usually I suggest reinforcing them with wire, but if they're that small then its more risky than helpful.

    30. thank you, Tiffy. ;O; I remembered somewhere through my crazy thought process of "OMG IT BROKE NOOOOO!!!" that I had ordered the basic Kumi set thingy that came with extra hands... so I fought with Bambicrony's weirdness of not using tiny S-hooks and instead using microscopic little knots... ouch my fingers.

but in any case, thank you! I'll most likely fix the hand eventually, though :]

    31. Resurrecting this thread, cause my cat just knocked over my poor doll and he lost a finger :x

So what kind of superglue would work best? Just a general store brand?

    32. Let's assume that for whatever reason you can't get a new part.

This is what you need: one drill with the finest bit you can find. One small piece of wire with a slightly smaller diameter than the drill bit. Glue of your choice.

Drill two holes, one in each part of the broken object, at the break sites. Apply glue to the wire and insert in one of these holes. Let cure. Apply glue to the exposed end of the wire, both broken surfaces, and insert wire into the other hole. Line up and press together. Wipe off excess glue, support until cured.

    33. might as well post too >< It's not a finger, but rather a part of the head cap that locks the scalp and the face together? It's broken off and I thought superglue might work. But does the difference between the finger and head part matter? Because I get the idea that the broken headcap piece might be strained more than the finger since the finger sort of... sits there... and the headcap is constantly put under stress. Soo. Is superglue okay for the broken 'lock' too?

Sorry if it makes no sense XD Basically one of the parts of the headcap that locks the face and scalp together is broken and I'm wondering if superglue will work. Because it had been previously broken and I can see the glue residue, and assuming the glue was superglue, I was wondering if superglue might be too weak or something.

It's a Luts head, if it makes any difference. ^^

    34. you know this made me wonder...would gorilla glue work? I have no idea myself, concidering I'v nver broken my resin boy ^.^ (thank god I havnt even had him that long) lol well hope his new hands come soon ^.^ untill then *wiggels band-aid wraped finger from sewing at montiter* ^.~

      -Kira

    35. Gorilla Glue would be a bad choice since it expands as it dries. *learned this from cosplay experience XD*

I generally use plain old crazy glue for breaks but, since they are appearing in increasingly difficult areas, I may head to the epoxy and wire route myself. x.x

    36. I used Loctite Precision Superglue for my girl's finger. I've been careful with it, but it hasn't shown any signs of spontaneously detaching or eating the resin. The bottle has a looooong nozzle on it so you can get it in between spindly little dolly fingers.

    37. I can promise that the epoxy and wire will hold up. The resin will shatter before the wire gives out. Now it is possible that the wire would pull out, but in that case it is a simple matter to glue it back together again. This is a technique used by antique restorers and museum curators to repair statues.

    38. Is Elmer's super glue gel okay? I read the back and it said to not use it on floorinated resin. I'm like "...what is floorinated resin?"

    39. bumpy? ^_^;;; Is elmer's super glue gel okay?

    40. My sister and my friend were wresling and when they were done I found Shia's finger on the floor. What should I do???

    41. If it's a clean break (no extra chips fell off) you can use Super Glue to fix it. Add a drop of glue to both sides and then press them together for a moment. My doll lost his finger before and this is how I fixed it. Or, you can ask for a replacement hand from the company if you cannot fix it.

    42. yes it's a clean brake... should I let it dry for awhile?

    43. In my experience the glue dries pretty fast so you'll only need to apply pressure for a few seconds. Good luck!

    44. Don't worry, if it's really bad you could always get a new pair of hands. If it's not too bad you could glue it and maybe put a pretty ring or a doll sized band-aid around the break or no one can tell :3

    45. It should be fine. Don't panic! Just press it neatly together, and let it dry for about a day. It should be as good as new.:)

    46. doll sized bandaid, where can i get one of those?

    47. If you simply glue on the broken finger it will still be weak at the break. I'd suggest either bracing the piece or using a thin layer of epoxy over the finger to help seal it together (which would require a little paint to match). For a support: Try taking a pin or short piece of thin wire- about a half inch long should do it. Drill into both the finger and hand about a 1/4 inch. Insert the wire into the hand, glue it, then apply glue to the piece sticking out and slide it into the finger.

    48. one of my dolls came to me with a finger that had broken and was repaired - I believe she used superglue, and it's been holding fine for... oh, gosh, 3 years now.

and my Jeremiah Blue's leg broke and I repaired THAT with superglue - it held for about 3 years. I did have to re-glue it not too long ago but it's still holding strong.

    49. It is fixed

    50. the same thing happened to me it was a clean cut with me too so just super glue it and well IF it leaves a little line well you can always apply a little ring or something thats what i did!! ;)

    51. So long as the finger is fixed, if the edges look a little rough, you can just take some fine wet sandpaper, and gently sand it smooth.

    52. Well, I was taking some pictures of my Luts Abadon and he decided to face plant the floor and I wasnt fast enough..
luckily his face is un damaged but 2 of his fingers have snapped off.

Any ideas on how to help? Would super glue be ok?

I would get new hands but you cant get hold of the hands separately. Do you think emailing Luts and asking would be worth a try?

    53. is it a clean break? not little pieces? super glue *should* be fine, but im not expert :sweat

    54. Yeah, a clean break luckily.

    55. Are you sure you can't get the hands separate? If they are Luts hands, their website has a whole bunch listed under option parts-hands. You might be able to find what you're looking for there.

    56. I know they have sold people parts that aren't listed before, so definately contact them.

    57. Super glue (cyanoacrylate) will be fine. You could also drill a small hole into the finger and into the hand and use a small piece of wire to reinforce the glued break.

    58. Tayma-Leigh: yeah I looked through, no senior delf hands :(
Kiyono: I will have to wait for their reply
twigling: Ok, thanks! I will have to try it when get some glue and wire

    59. If superglue wouldn't reattach my Mandarin DSpawn figure's finger, I have little faith for your poor doll especially with how delicate I've heard resin can be, you're probably best off with buying a new set of hands

    60. spectacled_one: If they can sell them I will buy some :)
