Adding or Removing Glued Temporary Piercings

Mar 22, 2008

    1. I had just purchased a doll, and he has some facial piercings, and none of them are permanent, so you should be able to take them out with thinner is what the person I got him said. He used nail glue for most of them, and was wondering if it will ruin his face up??? Could I do this with you any mess ups??? Any tips???

    2. if you are extremely careful with the thinner (try using the tip of a toothpick and apply it only to where the piercing is touching the resin), i dont think it should do much damage to the faceup. i'm pretty sure that the thinner will take off the sealer when you apply it to the affected areas, so when you're done, you will probably want to seal the face again afterwards.

if you manage to take off any of the blush, there is a tutorial here that shows (rather effectively with images) how to remedy the damage. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203031

    3. Ok thanks!!! Also, I really don't have any sealer, any Idea where I can get somthing localy??? or What I can use???

    4. Mr. Super Clear is probably the "best" sealer you could use. the problem is that it is rather hard to obtain right now.

you could look for testor's dullcote at local craft stores like michaels. check your phonebook (or the internet) for hobby/model stores near you.

there's a stickied thread all about sealers too :)

      best of luck!

    5. Hi sorry if this has been asked before (I looked but could not find one) I was wondering what would be the best thing to use to unstick glued in piercings. Thanks for you help.

    6. Depends on the kind of glue used, and the location of the piercing...and other things, too. Maybe a specific description and/or a picture would help in getting an answer for this?

    7. My NS Delf El had glued on piercings. I'm not sure what they (the previous owner) used but I soaked the area with water for about...10 minutes then I used a little bit of NON Acetone nail polish remover and it came off nicely, very clean. Sometimes you don't even need the Non Acetone nail polish remover.

    8. I'm seriously considering giving Kris (when she arrives) lip, nose and eyebrow piercings, however I dont want to mod her permanently in this way. So, can anyone recommend which glue to use from personal experience? Also any tips about positioning the piercings would be much appreciated (I'm planning on using steal threaded balls - the same I use on my own piercings only a smaller size of 1mm x 3mm)

      Many thanks, Carrie xx

    9. Alene's Tacky Glue, found in craft aisles.

That stuff is what I use to do scar mods on dolls, so it stays on. It dries clear, and it's removable - just peel it off.

    10. All of Victor's are done with superglue, but then again I'm using rings rather than balls so they sort of hold themselves on with friction. Superglue works really well, though. just make sure to MSC everything really well first.

    11. Would super glue not damage the dollfie resin?

    12. I just use basic white Elmer's PVC glue, and use a pair of jewelry pliers (???) to dab the ball in the glue. Then just hold it in place on the doll and wait for it to dry. :) As long as the glue is not globbed on, it should hold fine. I used this method for Triniti's nose piercing, and it has held perfectly in place since the day I got her.

    13. Thanks ^_^

    14. It doesn't seem to, or at least I've not spotted it yet. I'll keep you posted if it does.

    15. Superglue is awesome if you are trying to make a more permanent piercing; It instead second the Aleen's tacky glue <3 I holds on rings and balls equally well.

    16. No. Else people wouldn't use to it fix broken fingers, eh? :)

    17. I use tacky glue for Takaya's nose piercing and ears. It works great and it's easy to take off if I decide to go with something different.

    18. It can make a mess that you cannot remove if you mess up. It has to be sanded off.

      I always use eyelash glue.

    19. Not necessarily true. Non-acetone nail polish remover dissolves super glue, and I hear acetone does as well. I've also scratched excess superglue off resin with my nail and done no harm to the resin itself.

    20. What kind of tool would you need to pierce your dolls ears.

    21. as in to make a hole for a permanent pericing?

you'd need a pin vise and a small drill bit, you just twist it by hand and you can make a hole for permanent earrings

I've read that some people use something similar thats meant for drilling holes in people nails that you can get from places that sell nail art and stuff

I'm not very girly though I just have a regular one

    22. I have one of these; It's pretty much fabulous. And cheap.

    23. Pretty Dark Magician Girl - there's a really good permanent ear piercing tutorial in the book The BJD Orbyrarium. Im sure you could find one online somewhere as well ^_^

    24. With the tacky glue when removing does it up the face-up any?

    25. Where do you guys get the rings and such you use for piercings? I've been cutting wire and bending my own loops but it's a pain in the butt and I can't find any 'beads' small enough for studs. It's kinda annoying >.>

    26. inu-ookami; It can damage the faceup. When I had my saint he had lip rings and once when they got knocked off they took some paint with it, but most white school glues can be softened some with water and then wiped off.

Oizys; Most people make their own hoops or cut jump rings. For studs it varies by preference. Personally I use a dot of white glue and then paint it once the dots built up enough on the resin(and dried).

    27. thanks. as you can see bishi has alot of black on his lips and im not at the stage to do face-ups. so im so scared of messing it up, i love it so.

    28. o01101011 - Ah. Not much of an easier way to do it then *finger snap* Thanks though, and a good idea on the glue. Now I just need to give my girl a face up I'm happy with so I can do her piercings and let her stay like that. Heh.

    29. I was thinking of giving the Bobobie Apollo I'm saving up for snake bite piercings and was wondering if anyone had done it. I could use a little advice before I go stabbing holes into my expensive doll. :sweat

(Sorry if there was a link to this somewhere, but I did check before posting. Although I'm right in the middle of watching the finale of Avatar, so I'm not exactly the most observant person right now.)

    30. Just search "piercings" and you'll come up with loads of threads. For lip piercings all you do is glue them on, you don't actually drill holes into the dolls.

    31. I was sort of considering ones that could be changed out, which was why I said that. :3

I really should have done a search, but in honesty I keep forgetting there is a search option. XD; Sorry, I'm so unused to forums! I don't join forums, I usually hang around Livejournal when I'm looking for a community. (I still sort of blame Avatar.)

I'm really making myself seem like an idiot, aren't I?

    32. Eh, dont' worry about it! Why else would we have a subforum if we didn't want questions asked! ^_^

My girl has a lip ring; I have one word for you: Aleene's Tacky Glue. It is safe enough for your face-up (it can be washed away with warm water) but tough enough to hold on a tiny jump ring. My girl gets played with LOTS and she never loses hers. I do replace every six months or so, but that's not a big deal at all. All you do is dab a bit of glue on each of of a jump ring (which you have cut to the appropriate length to appear as if it is in your doll's lip) and stick that sucker on!

Here's a not so great pic of what it will look like
      [IMG]

I wish you the best of luck! <3

      • x 1
    33. Eep, I'm so glad you recommended a kind of glue! I was really worried about what to use. X3 (Her lip ring looks lovely, by the way.)

    34. where can your get the glue at?

    35. When I looked it up I realized it was familiar because my mom uses it for crafts, so I'm guessing you can buy it from places like JoAnn's and Michael's. :3

If not, it's cheap online, too.

    36. i was just at the fabric store earlier today buying faric for my dress. i should have looked. oh well another time. thanks>_<

    37. Wal-Mart. Anywhere that sells any remotely crafty stuff, it's real easy to find.

    38. *nod* but isn't it true that if you use acetone you should put on a baking soda/water paste on afterwards to take care of any acid left on? Just something I heard. Couldn't hurt atleast.

    39. Okay so this one should be an easy answer. In fact >.> I think I know the answer I'd just like to be very sure. I wanna give my doll a "bracelet" around her wrist that should look like surface piercings.

I plan on clipping up some rungs, filing the edges so it's smooth and there's no resin scratching and attaching with tacky glue.

      Here's the question part!
Should I seal her arm with MSC beforehand?

Also. Blushing. For those of you that are far more experienced then I, would you blush around where the rings would "go in" the skin to make it look more like it's in her arm? Or would that maybe not be needed?

      Thanks guys!

    40. I have multiple piercings on one of my doll's face, and was planing on blushing the
area, but then decided not to because I redo his face constantly. But, I think
it would be a really good idea to do some blushing, if you don't plan on constantly
reworking the area. One of my friends has both her wrists pierced, and the balls
from the labrets sink on her skin a bit, I think blushing would help simulate that pretty well.
You don't have to seal your doll unless you blush, but I always seal them just so that they
      don't get permanent stains.

Another thing to consider is that if you're not going to do a permanent mod (or super glue
the piercings on), they'll keep falling off when you rub on them, or accidentally bump them.
My doll with all the facial-piecings is meant to have multiple body piercings, but because
I don't want them to be permanent mods, I decided not to give him any. Keeping the
piercings in place when dressing your doll is a pain! One of my boys has a belly-piercing,
and I have to constantly remember he has it, otherwise I'll bump it, and off it goes.

Maybe that's why there aren't any (that I have seen) dolls with body piercings.

      - Enzyme ^__________^

    41. Awesome, thanks! I figured superglue would be the way to keep them on but tacky glue sounded best incase I ended up hating them.

    42. Actually, even super glue doesn't always keep them on permanently, but is a better bet than tacky glue if you want any kind of permanence to the piercings. My ark is full of body piercings and everything except his nipples and his reverse p.a. sty on fairly well with super glue. You do have to be mindful of them when dressing/undressing, though. I'm really curious to see how well your girl's piercings turn out. In my experience, balls stay on better than rings do, especially on body piercings. FYI, I use shot bead cut off of the chains I have of it for my guys' studs.

    43. Well yeah, super glue is easily removed and popped off. My Obitsu floating head has lip rings held in place via super glue and I can get them off easily.

I may have a bit of trouble finding anything small enough for a Bobobie March but I'm sure there's something out there.

    44. Heh, my only problem with super glued piercings is that they come off when I DON'T want them to. Like every frikkin' time I change my ark's shirt.:| I think maybe he's trying to tell me something.

For a March? Pin heads, maybe? I can't really vouch for that, the only piercing I've done on anything below a mini is on a Sunny's ear and I used the tiniest jump ring I could find.

    45. Hmm pin heads may very well work. Might just end up building up some tacky glue on the spots though. Can custom size it and all then. Use like. A toothpick to shape it and dot it on there.

    46. Thanks guys for all the advice

    47. I couldn't find this anywhere. If so, I'm sorry! :doh

I have a Dollzone Jake, And would love to see him have a lip-piercing.. but dont want to actually pierce him.

So: I want a ring, could you just get thos from the art/craft store?
2: I know you have to use 'kids glue' or something like that. But I dont understand the meaning of the kids glue, how does it look?

Any special things you have to watch out for?

    48. there are a lot of posts in here about how to do piercings and what to use, however for the sake of simplicity....
      1. You can get jewellery jump rings at most craft stores or beading stores, these open easily with a pair of needle nosed pliars to make excellent piercings. Alternately some dollar stores sell really tiny earrings that you might like.

      2. white glue, kids glue, craft glue, Elmers or what is more correctly known as PVA glue. This is a white glue that dries clear, and is water solluable. You do not want just paper glue as it will flake off, but any kids craft glue will work, just make sure it is water solluable. Alternately you can use a hot glue gun, REALLY carefully, when you want to take the piercing off you just blast it with a hairdrier to soften the glue and peel the piercing and glue carefully off. If you are putting piercings on ears etc this is fine, if you are doing it over a faceup I do not recommend the hot glue method

You can do permanent piercings in most dolls by drilling a tiny hole, I recommend a 1mm drill bit, turned with your fingers or a pin vice, dremels are a bit fast. These can be picked up in most modeling and hobby stores, or at Games Workshop. You then simply put the piercing through and close it. This is permanent however, so you have to be very careful when drilling, and do not breathe in any of the dust. I have done all my doll piercings permanently now and this is MUCH more secure, but you have to be sure before you do it.

Some people use a HOT pin or needle to push through the resin (the heat melts its way through) I do not recommend it as this method can leave black marks.

    49. Ok, so I've been wanting to give my boy snake bites. I dont want studs, but rings. I've gotten the smallest/thinest rings I could from the jewlery making suply section at the Michaels near me, but when I cut them and try to get them to look 'real' it never seemed to work out. They either were too big, too small, or too thick (could be because they were just too large?)... and the part that I'm really picky about, is getting them to look like they're in the lip. When I try, they tend to look exactly how they are. Like a half of a ring, the part in the lip doesn't 'blend in'. I see the cut edge of the metal.

I hope I'm explaining this alright. :sweat

Does anyone have any tips on supplies that work best, or techniques that really make the lip rings look like they're actually lip rings? Like cutting the metal at a certain angle or something?

I also dont want a big gap between the ring and lip. I want them relativly close to the lip's 'skin'.

If none of that makes sense (lol) then any tips on how to get them to look best would be great. I've seen them look pretty awesome on dolls, I just can't seem to get it right.

I can post links to pictures of the desired look I'm about, I just wasnt sure if I should. Some of them are DoA forms (not nessisarily gallery)

    50. the best advice i can give would be to drill the holes in but i gather that you don't want holes? i'm at a loss otherwise.

    51. when i cut my boy's rings, i cut them angled with the resin i was attaching it to and they turned out pretty well. I also used pliers to make them not stick out alot by making the curves more gentle. you just have to work the rings a bit.

    52. I can't think of any way to make the rings look as if they're actually in the lip without having them in at least partway, because there's no "give" to the resin surface. If you don't want to fully pierce the lip, I'd suggest taking a really fine needle file and drilling two shallow indents--no deeper than say 1/16"--that the ends of the ring can notch into. I haven't done this, so I can't say how noticeable it would look when the ring wasn't in, and of course it's a permanent alteration; but it's all I can think of. ..

    53. I'm going to be attempting snakebites soon, so I'm curious about this as well. It seems difficult to cut the rings at an angle, so maybe it's possible to sand the rings into the proper shape at the ends? (Not to mention it'd help prevent the rings from scratching the resin.) Then you could taper the part that's meant to go between his lips. I have no idea if you can sand metal rings though... certainly not with sandpaper, right? Maybe a file??

    54. For the two minis I've done rings for, I just got 4mm jump rings, cut out a (fairly large, more than 1/4) section, and glued it on with tacky glue. I file the cut ends a bit so they're not so scratchy, but don't really cut at a certain angle or anything, and they look OK to me. Maybe I'm not looking closely enough, though! You could file them to fit in the lip more, maybe? It may also depend on the lip sculpt, and how much space there is there.

    55. I also file the edges of the rings down when I do mine. And I've done several at this point, heh. Working the ring a bit helps as well as how you apply the glue. since it's clear, at least using tacky glue, it shows the resin and the through it but if you get it on in just the right areas it helps it look like the mental is piercing the lip instead of just sitting there.

    56. Thank you all :)

I'll certainly give filling a go, because I don't want to make perminent mods, just incase one day I want to change them, or I go crazy and want to sell them.

I'll also try bending them more with jewlery tools. I must need more patients lol, I get frustrated when the once perfectly curved ring starts looking dented because of my antics.

    57. i would say to make it look as if they're going into the skin, you could heat the head and press the ring against it when the resin is soft. if you ever wanted to get rid of it or redo it, you could just heat the head again and the dent would reshape to how it originally was. just use steam from a kettle to heat it :)

    58. What I did is bought tiny tiny jump rings and using nail clippers (or wire cutters) I cut a small chunk out, then held it up to Prophet's lip and debated if it needed to be bigger or not. xD Little by little I eventually had a gap big enough to fit around his bottom lip, and then I white glued it. I put a CRAP ton of glue on though, because they have a tendancy to pop off if not enough glue. xD Plus, the glue can help make it look sort of like skin if you want to blush it. o_O;;

Here's a picture of Prophet's lip piercings - the glue isn't dried yet so you can see how crazy I went with it. Now that they're all dry, you can't see any glue and those piercings aren't going anywhere without some force. xD

    59. Lately I've been cutting 4mm jump rings totally in half. 2 piercings out of one ring, and it seems to be working nicely.
