There's a lot of talk about how to open up the eyes of sleepy heads, but what about closing them? The best example is probably Berrypot's Merrufa who was once your average F28. Nevermind that she's a customizing goddess on her own... *drools for a moment* So how would you go about closing a doll's eyes slightly? I've yet to see a closed eye doll, but I'd assume the eyelids would have to be rounded a bit. What about what kind of clay to use and HOW to use it? Getting the color right? And of course the sculpting of the eyelids themselves. Does anybody know?
You could use Apoxie Sculpt in white if it's bw or use acrylics to mix up a similar color in the regular skin tone. It still won't match /exactly/, you'll probably have to paint the parts. There was someone taking commissions for doing such things in the forum, but I can't find the post.
I think this is the thread you're thinking of batchix... http://www.denofangels.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27567 I know she had a modded F-04 (new F-02) head that she half closed the eyes.
this site has tutorials explaining how to close eyes. they are here http://chocofi.boo.jp/doll/make26.html -continues on another page- and here http://chocofi.boo.jp/doll/make12.html maybe this could be useful and if you'll do it post your results!
where can I find Tamya's epoxy putty... would they have that in a store for people who do model cars? Or is there a source online?
Ok, I want to resurrect this topic, because I'm thinking about closing one of my doll's eyes, and reopening them again, as I'm unsatisfied with the shape I'd shaved them into previously. My big question is this - What are my options if I really mess up bad? I've never used apoxie sculpt. What do I do if I get done with closing the eyes, and I don't like the effect at all, or they're horribly uneven? twigling, I know you're very knowledgeable about things like this, so any help you could offer would be great. And anyone out there who has ever closed your doll's eyes like this who can share your experiences... that'd be great too. Thanks!
actually.. i would say use blu-tac first... to see if you can do it..i believe apoxie sculpt has a similar sort of texture. Also, PSing the imagine will give you an idea if you can handle the aftermath or not.. I've been using sculpt for the first time..and am actually surprised how much easier it was to use o.O
apoxie sculpt has a fairly long workjing time before it sets completely ( about three hours)-- so it's quite easy to keep messing with the shapes until they are perfect XD
I'm really interested to know how to go about in half closing an open-eyed doll's eyes using apoxie putty. There are so many talented customizers out there and I hope someone could point me in the right direction! I've done a search but I couldn't find anything much about the steps taken. Here are my questions: 1) Do you just pile the mixed putty onto the doll's eye and wait for it to dry before correcting the shape and sanding it? 2) How do you achieve the slightly convex look of a close eyelid? 3) I read on a japanese customizing link that Mr. Surfacer was used to balance out the color difference between the putty and the head(volks in this case) It stated Zoukeimura Flesh Surfacer, so I was wondering it it was this? 4) Which putty would be recommended to be used on a Volks pureskin head? Thank you!!
I would suggest putting a glass bead or something similar that you don't care about into the eye socket before you start so that you don't get a flat eyelid. Flat eyelids don't look natural at all. Then you mix some acrylic paint into your apoxy to tint it to match the resin. I havn't been able to do this right yet, so I can't give any pointers other than to remember that if you're mixing into one half of the apoxy before mixing the halfs of the apoxy together, then your final mixture will turn out a bit lighter than the color mixed half. Then you simply sculpt a new eyelid over the bead and old eyelid to whatever level of closing you want. Be careful not to leave the bead in there, though, or you won't be able to get it out. Once you've got the shape you want, very carefully remove the bead and, if the apoxy gets pulled out of place push it back out a wee bit with a finger from the inside. Don't over do the bulge, though, or it will look just as odd as a flat eyelid. Think chihuahua.
I'd like to add a suggestion in here that I've seen elsewhere: That is, using something like saran-wrap over an eye or bead, putting that in the head, then sculpting over that. That way you'll get a nice rounded eyelid, and the epoxy-sculpt won't stick to your eye/bead. Even if the saran-wrap sticks to the epoxy sculpt, your bead/eye won't, and you can just cut away the excess saran-wrap once the expoxy-sculpt has dried. Hope people can understand what I've just said, and that it helps somebody ^^
Great idea and makes sense to me at least. 1. Its easier to sculpt the putty while its still moist than to try carving into it when its dry. Then you can sand any rough spots out after its dried. 2. Already answered. 3. Afraid I don't know on that one. 4. I suggest Milliput Super Fine White. It can be tinted with acrylic paint to better match the resin.
I know this thread is old but I have to ask a question that fits in with this. But my teacher gave me some white powder like clay, you just add water to it and sculpt it on to the head, it's supposed to harden once you put it on. I don't remember the name of the clay but I was wondering if it was safe for resin?
There are some very good threads here that discuss various epoxy putties and clays for additive modifications. If you read through them, you'll find a lot of firsthand information about whether air-dry clays work for mods on resin: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1871 http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3785
If it's any help, I used fine white Milliput to close my Woosoo's eyes abit. I then used pastels wet and dry to colour match afterwards: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/michpowell/Bailey/woosoo1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/michpowell/Bailey/h1a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/michpowell/Bailey/m2a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/michpowell/Bailey/bp2a.jpg
i've read in the korean BJD forum, http://jangtoclub.cyworld.com, that the best way to close eyes on your doll is to use urethane.. and they said to use enamel to match the skin colour. it seems that a lot of them prefer that way more than using epoxy/putty mixture.. i can try to find out more info through them if you like/
ari-chan, i will try to then get the pictures from the korean forum. they did not do a step-by-step tutorial, but i plan to close eyes of volks nono (old old resin) that i had brought recently. i think i'll make up a tutorial then. if you need the tutorial quickly, PM me and i'll e-mail you what was on the korean forum. (edit:: i no longer have the tutorial.)
I found some in a store selling stuffs for model cars and also on this web site : http://www.hlj.com/product/TAM87052
I'd love to know what that information from the Korean forum said. I don't know a thing about urethane or enamel. DX And if you do a tutorial, shounenalice, I will glorify you in my heart for at least a week and a half. :D
shounenalice~ wow, I would really love to see a tutorial in english, as well, if you ever do make one.
Mich: I love your partly-closed eyed Woosoo! I've never seen anything so smoothly done. It's lovely. I'll have to go find milliput now. How difficult was it to shape to your doll's head? I'm trying to do the same and I don't mind the discoloration. I need it actually to give a slightly bruised look of someone who's been in bed too long.
Thankies! Actually it was the first time I had done that sort of mod. It just took a little time, patience, and a steady hand. Here's a couple of links for you: http://www.ukge.co.uk/UK/repair-preserve.asp?gclid=CIzzg7iji5gCFUoa3godghl2CQ http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&...toys&hvadid=3052592743&ref=pd_sl_3foi9kz7j9_b Hope that helps.
Wow, then that's even more fantasic. Great job! Thanks so much for the links of where to buy! That is so awesome that you did that for me. My computer is ancient (bought in '97, never updated. oops) and can't navigate the webs too well. So you have no idea how much you've really helped me. Thanks, again! Oh, man. I can't wait to do this. XD
Thanks. Do you know if the other colors stays true once dry? I was thinking of using the yellow-grey milliput. The doll is representing a character who woke up during his own tomb robbery and took the body of the grave robber. Who unfortunately is very ill and was in this to make enough money for treatment. @_@ So the character's sort of stuck in the sunken-eyed, sallow look of his "victim" until his powers mature enough for him to molt again.
Ahhh I 'm going to buy a Nanuri 2007 with opened eyes and I want to transform it into the original eyes (closing eyes)... and I want to use Tamiya ePoxy Smooth Surface ^^ It's like a little grey- white color... but is more wither that grey :P My question is: Can I paint the epoxy when it is dry?
I tried buying Milliput from Amazon.uk.com and they won't ship it to me. XD Amazon.uk.com says, "There is a slight error in your order. We cannot ship to your region." I love how understated they are. Anyway I ordered some from ukge.co.uk and went to Milliput's homepage to ask for a list of sellers in my state.
ohhhh, some very usefull suggestions, i'd love to try this, its the kind of look that looks really sweet, I could just never have a doll perminantly blinded like that!
ooh this is very helpful :> especially since one of my characters has a lazy eyelid, now i know that modding that won't be impossible :3
I believe I am in the right place to ask this... I know you can open eyes up but has anyone tried turning open eyes into romantic eyes? Is this possible at all? Thanks!
Alright so question for everyone: I'm trying to not so much shut the eyelid as I'm trying to actually make smaller the shape of the eye. And the tricky thing is, all these suggestions seem for resin, and I'm working with a DD head. Basically I'm trying to imitate the eyes of the Dridoller Suigintou. He/she actually extended the brow and cheekbones to make the overall eye shape smaller, then (I think) just cut the eye into that (or shaped it that way). But I know he/she used a DD head. And yet I can't figure out what kind of material he/she used. So my question is what sculpting material should I use for a DD head, and should I try and match the color to the head or sculpt it then paint it? Thanks in advance!
Im not sure if it was mentioned but Jisatsu used epoxy i believe and shaped it... after my Luts Lu Wen got a face up he looked like this: Im pretty sure it was epoxy though...
How hard is it to close BJD eyes? I've ordered a Aidolls/Customhouse Little Junior Ai Icarus and as my free head I got a Jupiter head. I really wasn't really too fond of any of the heads they offered free in the Little Junior size, but when I saw the Jupiter head, it gave me an idea for a character but I soon realized that I wanted to close his eyes slightly so he has a dreaming look more than an open eyed look. So my question is, how hard is it to close a dolls eyes? Even by just a little? Are there any FU artists who offer closing of the eyes as an option? What's the most common product used for closing their eyes? Thanks! x3
The most common product for eye closing is epoxy/apoxie either Milliput or Avies. It's not difficult, the most problematic thing I've ever come across is blending the color of the modded lids back into the doll's resin color. I've found that this is best achieved by airbrushing the whole head with paint the same color as the resin and sealing REALLY well. But you can do a wash of acrylic in lots of layers, or blush if you have the right color. Also a really good face-up artist can also make the mods seamless. The other thing you have to watch is how the inside of the lids sit. I like to have glass eyes the same size the doll will wear when the eyes have been closed, and 'press' them into the still wet epoxy to make sure that the lids wont push the eyeballs back into the head. And yes there are many artist in the customizing thread who offer eye closings as an option. Lots of luck!
Yeah, the only thing I'm worried about it the coloring because, I'm not in any way talented in the face up department, so I wouldn't know how to color it at all correctly. I've been looking through face up artist comissions but I have yet to find one that will do an eye closing, though plenty do eye openings, I guess that's much easier? Thanks for answering though! That helped quite a bit. x3
I don't mean to piggy-back on your thread, but I was wondering if anyone knows if this epoxie eyelid mod is reversible? Or are epoxie mods (like most sculpt mods) permanent?
I have heard you can remove it by putting it into a hot water, epoxy becomes slightly more malleable, more removable; Of course you have to be careful about yellowing. But you wouldn't really want to do it because most of eyes-closing modification process you sand some part of original eyes to make the eyelid to look smooth and seamless, therefore even after removing the putty head is not in its original shape. At least that is what I've heard.
Is it hard to match the epoxy to the resin color? If I can't find a face up artist to close his eyes slightly, I may just comission two different people, though I worry if the epoxy changed how the face up is done. Is it more difficult than painting resin?
So my question is, how hard is it to close a dolls eyes? Even by just a little? I am not a professional face up artistor a customizer but I have closed the eyes of three of my dolls/heads and I didn't find it hard (I had zero experience prior to doing any modifications on BJDs). Are there any FU artists who offer closing of the eyes as an option? I don't know, I have never looked but I'm sure if there are any you'll find them in the MP . What's the most common product used for closing their eyes? I am not sure, I don't frequent modification threads all too often but I use Aves' Apoxie Sculpt, I find that it works really well for my needs. It might be different for others. (: I have completely removed ear modifications from one of my dolls and didn't find any damage on the original sculpt. I was very careful when I removed the mods and took what seemed like an eternity to sand off the last minimal amount of additive material but I think it was worth it despite the fact that I was going to be modifying the ears again.XD I have redone and revised multiple times many of the modifications I've done on some of my dolls and I haven't found yet anything that wasn't reversible as long as it was an additive modification (subtractive mods are a different story). - Enzyme
I agree, I found plenty of customizers who open eyes, but virtually none who will close eyes part way. Some faceup artists who use airbrushes are willing to color an apoxie mod to match resin. Linda S. galatia9
hi there, I'm sure it's here somewhere, but I can't find it. Anyone know of a tutorial to partially close eyes or make them smaller? Thank you!
Think I've seen couple threads and posts about it. Have to use either Milliput or Epoxy, that's what I've seen used, and shape it to how you want it. Good idea to use the sized eyes you want w/ some saran wrap covering it so it doesn't stick to the stuff to help shape and create the curvature. As for colour, I've heard you can probably tint it w/ paint w/ either acrylic or water colours but most likely you have to airbrush/blush it to make it match to the resin. Hope this give you an idea. ^__^
this is what I'm doing currently to restore an unoa lusis faceplate! I got some tamiya epoxy putty from volks to do it. I popped the eyes in and secured them with eye putty, then mixed my epoxy. I flattened little pieces of it (not too thick! and applied two strips of it, one above the eye and one below it to make just a little slit of an eye. from there I poked and prodded it to make the eye shape I wanted. it was very hard to get the two sides to look the same, and to look like unoa eyes. I'm waiting for it to cure right now, here's the before and after pics for this WIP: untouched eyes, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too big and weirdly shaped here you can see how the two strips made a little slit to be worked outwards eye shape fixed! it needs a metric ton of sanding and beveling, then a coat of airbrushing and sealant and it should be ready for faceup. this is my first time modifying ANYTHING, so I'm probably doing it wrong and someone more experienced can help you here. I hope this helps though!
thank you so much both of you! fashionbabylon - how is it working with that stuff? does it seem pretty easy to control? and does it just air dry i'm assuming? you're doing a great job! how are you going to blend the colors?
it's really easy! it comes in a greenish stick and a white stick, you cut equal amounts and mush them together until they turn that light blue color. it's really sticky, so although the package said to use surgical gloves, I opted not to because that sounded like hell on earth x.x it's soft and sticky for about 2-3 hours, then it hardens a little bit and you and get the final positioning in place, then it finishes curing by air drying and is done in about 12 hours. I'm going to sand it all down today, and see how the colors look then. it dries blue, so it'll definitely need some acrylics. I kind of want to buy a dremel, since sanding and shaping this all by hand is freaking me out x.x
i might try this for a new boy i have coming... and this might be a dumb idea, but what about air dry clay? the craft kind that you can mix with acrylic paints?
I'm sure it could be done, but it wouldn't be perminant and I'd worry it wouldn't stick to the head. You'd have to sculpt it and then maybe glue it once it's dry? And even when it did dry it's soft, it may dent or ding really easily.
ah, thanks kitkaze. ^^ yeah, i just read too that it's hard yet flexible after it dries...haha, that might be interesting. he could change expressions with his eyes after it was done. =)
Hey there. I've been wondering, does anyone know how to do a mod to close the eye-holes on a head? I've been thinking about buying a doll and ordering two of the same heads so I can have one awake and one asleep (if that makes sense). I don't have a doll yet but I've just been thinking it'd be cool. If this already exits, please delete.
