Blushing a head to match a body?

Apr 16, 2007

    1. I'm curious about the possibility of painting/blushing a whole head to match the resin body colour. Is there any possibility of it looking good? Has it been done by anyone? Or would there always be a clear difference between the head and the body, no matter what?

I'm trying to find this out because law week I ordered a Minimee head, and the *only* body in all of BJDdom that would work well for my character is the white-skinned male Dollshe body. Unfortunately, it appears that the Minimee resin has a fairly bright yellow tone, which might cause problems.

I have absolutely *no* experience in this area, so I'd be very grateful for any help or advice! :aheartbea

    2. XD oh dear. if Normal Skin to Beauty white, I'd say you'd have a bit of a troubblle there XD

But I'd say it is possible to blush a head to match the body. A lot easier than blushing body to match the head XD

I've never really done it, but I'm not sure how white can you actually get your head. Can't you get the Normal skinned dollshe body?

    3. Hahha, this made me chuckle, simply because I will have the same problem.I've got the minimee heads too, and just ordered two Domuya Flexi-bodies to go with my heads, so I'm going to have to blush something no doubt, but at the price of half price bodies I couldn't pass up the great offer!
I'm going to try and blush the heads I think with either dry or wet pastels, and see how it looks. We can keep in touch here.

    4. hyschara - If I absolutely have to, I guess I'll get a normal-skinned body, but I really wanted a very dramatic, dark-on-white gothy boy, so I'd much prefer to get a white body. But yeah, a normal-skinned Dollshe boy is definitely plan B! ^^

Mich - Oooh, I can't wait to see what you do! My boy won't be ready for another couple of months, so I'm relying on the recipients of this first batch to work out the best solutions. :p

    5. Yeah well at least I will be able to compare the heads' resin colour to my motley crew.

    6. Not sure if you've seen the minimees, but here I can show how blushing worked, as the head was a completely different resin colour to the body:
I did the face ups, and you can see how blushing the head makes it match better:
My two new girls( one's for my daughter to have).
One is wearing 14mm eyes, and the other 16mm Zouks.
      This is what I did:
      1) Take a large brush( like a blusher brush), and wet with water.Blot off excess, and brush over your pastels, then brush on head.
      2) Let dry then use another large brush or a cotton wool ball or pad, to sweep over head to take away any brush marks.
      3) Seal with MSC when desired result achieved.

    7. You can have someone custom mix the color and airbrush to match. When you airbrush just the head you don't have to worry about chipping and doing the face up is the same just with more base coats of sealer - only downside is when you change the face up you have to either remove the airbrushing and the whole faceup or airbrush over the old faceup.

    8. Mich - Wow, what a difference! O_O I will definitely be trying your technique, I think. Your MiniMee is gorgeous, by the way!

AENEAS - Thanks for the tip! If I end up sending him to a face-up artist with an airbrush, I will definitely try it!

    9. Welly my Saint head, Freyne, was entirely airbrushed a beigey color, and then had blushing done in coral and brown colors. He's actually a pure white resin (and his head cap still is), but he no longer matches either Dollshe body. (The normal DS body, with the most color, is very pink-white.) He actually turned out to match the beigey/cream white tone of an Iplehouse normal skin best.

    10. Omichao has a Shou-Ryo painted to match CP NS. Ask her. :) I think he is awesome!

    11. is it possible to use spray cans instead of airbrush?? and if so, is there any type of paint better?

    12. Spray can would be inadvisable because the area you want to affect is small...and the area a spray can covers is large. Also spray can is a messier coverage...with speckles and dots of paint that are much bigger than the spray dots with an airbrush. If you don't want an airbrush, just stick with pastels. There are pro-face-up artists that just use pastels, so there is no rule that you need an airbrush. :D

    13. Pastels work a treat! People were surprised at the meetup this past weekend when I said my boy was a hybrid, and really surprised when I showed his headcap. Another DIM/Domuya.

I'd think spray cans would be a pain trying to get the right colour.

    14. When trying to match the head resin color to the body, would it be easier to just have a lighter head than a darker head? I wanted to put a luts Delf head on a luts Senior delf body and I'm still not sure what route to go. *_*

    15. Doesn't luts match the skin tones between delf and senior delfs? Seems weird that they wouldn't, though I haven't looked much at SD sized dolls so I wouldn't really know...

Anyways, it does seem like it'd be eaiser to get the head in a lighter shade than the body and blush it. I mean, do the first two layers maybe to work on skin tones and then get into the blush and eyebrows and such.

    16. The first post in this thread is over 3 months old, and I think it has been discovered that it was the clay the sculptors used for the Minimee prototypes that is bright yellow. Actual minimee resin is a very pale colour, and matches okay with paler pinkwhite or near-white resins.

    17. I bought a DoT girl, and long story short, I ended up with a body and a head that do not match (it is my fault, not DoD's). I do not really want to sell either one, though I have a thread in the marketplace just in case, so I'm going to try to match the head to the body. The body is a light, creamy, yellowish color, while the head is extremely pink. I prefer the color of the body, so what would be the best thing to do?

I considered dyeing the head, but I don't know if it works for making the skin tone a lighter color. Painting the entire head is an option, but I think that might be very messy. Any suggestions??

    18. I've heard of just using a white spray can of paint, painting it all over lightly and then blushing it to match the body more? I need to do this in the future too.

    19. Airbrushing the head would be the best bet. You cant dye something lighter. Also you wouldnt get rubbing on the head. I would try to find a good customizer. Or see if you can swap heads with someone who has a yellower head.

    20. Airbrushing sounds like a good idea, but another potential option, although possibly, er, controversial, might be to try sun-bleaching the head?
Basically, intentionally 'yellowing' the resin by exposing it to sunlight. I know it sounds a bit mad because it's exactly what we usually try to avoid, but if you do it carefully it shouldn't make the resin yellow, just neutralise the pink tone.

When my DoT boy first arrived, he was very pink-grey, and looked kinda sickly and rather odd next to my other dolls, so I took him apart (to avoid 'tan-lines' on the joints) and left him on a windowsill for a week, moving the parts around every day so they got even exposure. Compared to the un-exposed inside of the headcap, the resin is a lot less pink, and slightly lighter. He doesn't look yellow at all, just a much nicer, more natural colour :)

    21. Blue did the right thing, expose it to the sun to match if you really want to. DOD's start off incredibly pink but i've had my boy 2 months and only taken him out once and his started to yellow already. My little 10 month old DOC is a very 'creamy-grey' due to sun exposure. DOD's tend to yellow to a cream colour which sounds just like the body your talking about.

Either that or blushing/airbrushing would work aswell.

    22. Here's one I've made, by simply blushing a Minimee head with pastel powder to match. It's a little darker now than the body, because I forgot that MSC darkens things a little, but it's still pretty close on, especially compared to how it looked before blushing (to the left)

The body is the same in the two pictures.

    23. I think blushing is the way to go o get a hybrid doll to match. My Leslie has an SDF Annette head and a DoT body. His head was initially a darker, more yellowy color and the body was lighter and more pinky. I used pastels to blush the head a pinky-white color to match the body.

      Before
      [IMG]

      After
      [IMG]

The body's pretty shinny because it doesn't have any sealer on it, but you get the idea.

First I coated the head with Testors Dulcote. Then I used Prismacolor Nupastels; mostly white with a little shell pink. I scraped them with a razor to get a bunch of fine powder. Then I applied a ton of it with a cotton pad. When I was satisfied with the color, I cleaned the excess power out of the mouth and stuff with a small paint brush. Then I gave it another coat of Tostors before I started on the rest of the face-up.

    24. OMG, Mich! :o I think you're my new hero when it comes to matching a non-matching resin color head to a body.

I have this dilemma, too, since I got my D.I.M. Belita a Volks body.

D.I.M. resin is really milky color compared to yellowy Volks resin.

Ohoh--I'll surely take note of your lovely work.

You have very pretty dolls, btw. :thumbup

P.S: Subscribing to this very useful thread.

    25. Thanks Hun.:)
Oh and I have to say that you don't have to worry about it rubbing off at all and not staying put as well as airbrushing, because If sealed correctly the pastels stay put perfectly well.;)

    26. This is an absolutely beautiful job!
I am so glad for the results because i am worried that this will happen to me.
      *_*
      Eek!

Thank you guys for all your info.
      Helps a lot!

    27. this is really helpful. i've got a previosuly loved Souldoll body and CP el head, and I love that he's got a set of hands with a pointy finger, but i'd like him to have a second set, and His resin is yellowed, so I don't want to get a new pair of hands that are super pink next to his kind of sallow yellow.

    28. i just recently did this with my MD Miho head to match him to a B&G body. the head was way pink, the body yellowish.

with the faceup he came with:

after i blushed him with yellows and a little orange-brown...

difference is not so noticeable now....and in person ive had people tell me they cant see it at all. just ignore the Luts White hands XD i havent blushed them yet...:sweat

    29. That's a really good match! you blushed your miho head really well!

I'm running into a similar problem. I have a limited iple Harin head with the original limited face-up in tact, but when I bought a body for her it turned out to be a lot pinker than the head. I don't know if the resin color is just that different or the head has yellowed, but I really don't want to disturb the limited face-up, so in the end I am probably just going to buy a new Harin head (because I really hate the idea of intentionally yellowing that beautiful body!). I really wouldn't mind doing my own face-ups on my Harin, but I realy don't want to ruin the limited face-up since her previous owner kept such good care of her, so this will solve both of my problems.

but really, VampireAngel13 you did a wonderful job matching the color!

    30. Ravyn42 ~ thank you :aheartbea

and i feel your pain XD my MD Ryu came to me with a faceup by one of my favorite artists...but he's so dirty now he doesnt match his body anymore and i dont want to clean him or wipe the faceup...so i deal with the non-matchiness :\

      good luck with yours!^^

    31. **sigh** yeah, because my doll has the limited face-up, I'm kind of stuck. It's a tough decision to make, but I think I will end up getting the new doll head. At least that way there's no question of a resin match.

But if you end up wiping your doll's face-up, you will be able to get a better blushing match between the head and the body. That's a major plus!

    32. Has anyone here done any matching for tan resins? I have the Soom Afi fantasy parts so I bought a Keny to be his body... but the resins naturally don't match! because thats my kind of luck :P I was just wndering if anyone else has any examples...or pictures.

    33. I'm going to be doing something hard matching a rs ns head to a lt body...oh boy

    34. The other thing I've done too is actually paint a body to match a head. I had to recycle a NS body to match a WS Heliot head. It isn't ideal, as the joints can rub, but it doesn't matter under clothes. ( Again this might be helpful to someone). Here are the results:

    35. I'm going to resurrect this thread to make a pretty simple suggestion that no one else has mentioned so far.
      Tan lines.
Yes, tan lines. Like around the collar area, like many people often have. Just blush the neck and collar bone area in a vaguely t-shirt or perhaps tank top way. Then to finish it off, maybe a little more blush on the lower arms or shoulders. This suggestion is for heads that are darker for the body. Maybe it could work out well for someone, especially if they would like a cool realistic look.

    36. YUZU, that is amazing!! Mich, the pictures don't show--is there anywhere else I can see them? This thread just made me feel loads better about hybridizing-thank you all!

    37. Hmmmnn, not sure why Kira Kat, I'm seeing them on my computer screen right now.

    38. This thread is definitely giving me ideas to help my doll!! I have an older DZ Yuu, that apparently was WS but has now yellowed evenly (I'm the 3rd owner). I ordered some DZ jointed hands in ns yellow, thinking they would be a close match, only to find they look positively tan next to him when they arrived! @_@ instead of trying to order more, I figured I might as well do a Tim Gunn and make it work!

So, between trying to lighten the hands with chalk and/or giving my boy's body a slight tan (the yellow color is starting irk me a little), is this a fools errand?? And Mich: what kind of paint did you use on that body to turn it white?? That's amazing!!!

    39. Chalk? Use pastels in a light color (maybe mixed with some white) or go for tan lines. Lord knows my hands are darker than the other parts of my arm. As are most people who regularly wear long sleeve shirts.

    40. So, my friend had a CH old girl body and a ND Ligaya head. The body was NS and the head... WS? It was very light and pink.
After 2 layers os blushing with soft pastels, here's the result!

      Top of head: original corlor
Head: blushed to match the body
The blushing ended a little bit darker, but in person it's less noticeable ^^

    41. I'm marking this helpful thread. My Soah is about 6 years old and I'm her third owner. I just received a new Smiling Soah head only to be saddened when I put them together tonight and found the new smiley head pinker than her original head. At first, I thought I bought the wrong skin tone, but, of course, Elfdoll offers only white (or is it snow?) and normal. When I showed the photo to my hubby, he pointed out the obvious: my girl has yellowed. I hadn't noticed the yellowing since it's even. I was kind of hoping I'd just have to buy a new body....guess I'll have to try blushing first ;-D

    42. Bump! Anyone have any specific tips on blushing a head or body lighter to match a darker resin? I have no problems with blushing darker, but I am wondering if anyone has any tips on doing the opposite, as I will soon be doing some work where blushing darker is not an option.

Anyone have hints on the colors to use (straight white vs white and pink or peach), techniques or anything?
