Pink pastel stains on head after removing faceup

Oct 18, 2007

    1. I use General's brand chalk pastels do to my face-ups, and I've found that the particular shade of creamy pink I use for lips leaves a stain! I had hoped it was just a problem with vinyl, as my first 2 girls were Obitsu, but I removed the face-up I did on my SOOM Gena tonight and she has the same problem. :( It also left stain where I used a mixture of that shade and another to pink the corners of her eyes and her nostrils. :...( :...( Is there any way to get rid of this?

(BTW, I sealed her with Testors before and after coloring, and am using non-acetone nail polish remover to clean off the old face.)

It didn't photograph very well so I tweaked it in photoshop. This is close to the real-life staining.

    2. Might be a dumb question, but did you make sure you REALLY got into those tiny areas?

I was wiping a faceup today, and had SO much trouble getting the color out of the nostrils, eye corners, and crack between the lips. =_= It was ridiculous. Not even a Q-tip could do it!

    3. I've been poking with a needle wrapped in cotton ball fluff, and since all the sealant long since "melted" off I think I got it out of most of the little spots. The staining isn't just there, though; it's on the actual fleshy surface of the lips.

    4. Maybe try a magic eraser. I have also heard of people removing stains with baking soda and peroxide, but I have never tried that myself.

    5. I hear that the Obitsu's stain much easier... I have also heard people using some sort of pimple stuff that works. Not sure exactly on what, but I may have read it in the obitsu section in the FAQ forum here on DOA.

    6. Acne cream with benzoil peroxide is said to work, but much much better and infinitely safer is

      RemoveZit by Twin Pines

      http://www.twinpines.com/products/cleaning-products/remove-zit

Yes, I know this sounds like another acne cream, but it is not. The folks at Twin Pines specialize in products for doll restoration, especially vinyl dolls. They know vinyl, their products are specially formulated for vinyl (and are also resin-safe). They know their stuff.

    7. I would also recommend Twin Pines over acne cream. I used acne cream on a Takara Jenny whose feet I'd stained, and several months later her feet turned very yellow where I'd used it. Because of that, I won't use it on anything expensive or hard to come by.

    8. Is Remove-Zit anything like Goof Off?

    9. Hello..I would greatly LOVE to hear others' opinion regarding my problem

So few days ago..I erased my boy's faceup in an attempt to do a new one
The first try was full of errors..so I erased it too.
And then..I noticed that my boy has this..irremovable reddish stains around these area:

its not THAT reddish XD It's a nice shade of red I must say (though it made him look like he has burnt mark or something). It looked like a subtle blushing too and definitely not that noticeable once the faceup is there but its still scared the hell out of me T__T

I used Mr.Color thinner and Cutex Non-Acetone polish while cleaning :( Did some thorough scrubbing with wet magicsponge and all but nothing works.

Anyone got any solution to this? I cant really show the picture as he has a temporary faceup at this moment.

    10. Were there any red/purple/blue/brown paint near those areas on the face, like eyewells, lips etc? Was the previous faceup airbrushed? Most paints (and yes, even chalks) CAN stain, unfortunately. Anything with a red base is quite likely to, which is why base coats of MSC or other sealants are recommended.
It's also extremely difficult to truly remove all of a faceup. Liquid paint strippers like NPR often work by bonding to the paint and carrying it off the surface. Make sure you're using clean swabs soaked in the remover, and stop using them as soon as they pick up paint. Even swiping over a second time can just smear colour back over the surface.
If the problem is just excess colour still sitting on the surface, then you have to simply go over the head dozens of times with clean cotton and remover. If the actual resin is stained then I'd suggest a very light sandpaper like 800-1000 grit rubbed in constant circles to see if it's just the surface layers stained, the problem may have adhered to deeper layers and major sanding would be necessary for complete removal.

    11. What color was the Cutex you used?

    12. Remove-Zit is nothing like Goof-Off. Goof-Off contains oils that will also permanently stain resin.

Go to the website and read up on it. It is magic stuff. It even takes the notorious "green ear disease" out of vintage fashion dolls.

    13. sorry was wondering where'd my thread went to :sweat

      anyway..it was the orange-peachy ones..It's the non-acetone one ya? O_o

      and astrosnik..thank you so much for the advices! ;~;
at the moment i'm kinda scared and paranoid to remove his faceup again
i might try what you suggested when i finally pick up the courage to redo his faceup ><;; if its still irremovable..i guess sanding would be the best option T_T

    14. Sometimes, the red/orange toned nail polish remover can leave red marks, like the ones you described. Maybe try some untinted remover?

    15. OMG IT HAPPENED TO ME TOO!!! That orange cutex is realllllllly bad...My head turned out super stained after rubbing that orange one on it...nowadays I use the white milky one - which seems to whiten heads in reverse...

    16. Yeah! I need to dig around as I used to have a nice supply of this around. I like to restore/repair the older vinyl dolls from the 50/60s. I never thought I could use this on resin though.

Oh wait, I just read, it has a 12 month shelf life and my stock is older than that now. Ah well. I may order more now that I know it has more uses.

    17. Eh...
I've had the same problems with Gabriel. When I tried to do a face-up on him. The brown-ish chalk pastel stained real bad and all I was doing was touching up the one he already had so their was sealant on him already. It won't come off and I've tried Mr. Clean magic eraser like some people highly recommened and NOTHING happened. I have a bad feeling that'll never come off. Then again I haven't used non-acetone nail polish yet but just to be safe and not try to ruin my dolls face at countless attempts to remove the face-up...is non-acetone nail polish that effective at all??

    18. Honestly there's much better options for removal than non-acetone nail polish remover. 91% Rubbing alcohol is much safer and is very easy to come by. There's also many, many threads about the different faceup removers.

    19. You need to do several layers of MSC before you even put to dot of pastel on the face. And if you know that your going to use very dark colors add a couple of extra layers. As far as the red staining on Whippy's head it is most likely the polish remover, it has a dye that makes it that color, it stained your doll. It has been said repeatedly do not use colored removers. You need to buy Windsor and Newton brush Cleaner. It is dye free and safe to use of your doll. After you apply it and remove the face up you then need to wash the head with soap and water. You always have to wash the head and throughly dry it before you start wity your MSC. Sorry for you that your doll stained. Check out the sticky for sealents.

    20. I hope I'm not bothering anyone but I have this major problem with my doll's head ( KDF aru WS) .
He has some weird patches. Is it because of me not removing his msc properly from the first faceup? It can't be removed with Magic Eraser and Non Acetone nail polish. Should i try sanding? ; A ; Or acne cream? Or 90% rubbing alcohol ?

Any form of help would be greatly appreciated!

    21. AmyDakota, try the 90% rubbing alcohol with the magic eraser. That happened to me with my SOom euclase and my former nanuri 07. After some scrubbing it came off.

If not try soaking it in some diluted alcohol, I did that safely with both heads. But be careful it might soften the resin so don't leave it for too long.

Good luck! I hope this helps.

    22. I tried the rubbing alcohol and magic eraser and it only got 20% off ; u ; I did it once, so maybe i'll try doing it again.
Diluted alcohol huh... How many minutes should I leave it in?
      Thank you so much btw!
Here is how it is now!

    23. AmyDakota, it looks like MSC left over. You could try soaking the head in alcohol, or maybe in windsor and newton brush cleaner.

    24. AmyDakota leave it maybe for two minutes in the alcohol then wash immediately afterwards. You can try scrubbing again with the magic eraser and alcohol. Good luck!

    25. Does anyone have advice for removing pink stains in hard-to-reach areas? I got a lot of the stains off with a good deal of rubbing with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but there's still quite a bit left to remove in the eye crease, around the mouth area, and under the eyes. I tried soaking the head in rubbing alcohol and giving it a few cleanings too but it's only lightened it a little bit. All of the face up is off, so I know that's not the issue. Any tips for those hard to reach spots?

    26. RainyAeon try and use a pointy Q-tip and some 90% rubbing alcohol. That should help.
