Creating claws?

Oct 5, 2007

    1. Well I did a search on this and came up with nothing, so escuse me if this happens to be a repeat thread :sweat

Anyway, I've been wondering and attempting to look into how to create tiny claws for my boys. I figure this would have to be something to add on to their already existing nails, rather than something I'd have to modify, but as their so tiny I was exactly certain how to go about it so they looked natural. They will be painted if that makes any difference. Also, their hands will be dyed, so I also don't know if adding on claws would be something better suited to doing before or after their dye job.

      Thanks! :aheartbea

    2. There's a few ways to do it. One way is to sand down their fingertips under their nails, to give the illusion of long nails. Of course, this only works on certain dolls, and I'm not familiar with DOC hands so I'm not sure if it would work. But this would be the best method, IMO, if you're dying the hands. And it should be done before, not after dying, since it requires sanding.

Another way is to use apoxy, Sculpey, etc, like Sefie said. With this method, you just sculpt the claws, then sand it after it's dry to get them shaped right. However, I'm not sure how that would work with the dye. I would imagine that the resin and the apoxy would take the dye differently, resulting in a splochy/uneven dye job. If you choose to go with this, I would suggest dying the hands, sculpting the nails, then painting the nails to match the dye.

Third, there's the "press-on nails" method. Cut out tiny nails, then glue them on, similar to a human manicure. People have used real people press-on nails, straws, anything thin and plastic would work. This should work ok with the dying thing too, as long as you dye the hands then apply the nails afterwards. Again, they would need to be painted.

      Hope I helped some. :)

    3. Oh, apparently plastic drinking straws are much thinner and easier to apply as fake nails, instead of using human ones.

    4. hm I've been wondering about this too, I want to add claws to my little vamp boy

    5. I've been doing many kinds of different claws, here's few:

Here's something I've done just by adding some putty on the nail.

And here's something I've done with sanding his hands and adding putty to give the nail length.

I'm also planning on doing a nail set, which I'd ask my friend to cast. I though they'd look great in transparent resin. :)

    6. Wow those came out really amazing~!

    7. oh wow Illves, they're fantastic!

    8. Hi guys. A while ago i used Milliput Epoxy to sculpt claws on my Lukah. the only problem is they want to snap off where the epoxy is thin.
What can i use so this won't happen?!

      Here's what i sculpted...

    9. Perhaps you could try putting a glaze on them, so they can harden a bit.

    10. those claws are beautiful! Uhm... I dont know how to help though, good luck!

    11. Those look great! Maybe for greater strength you could build them up with some sort of metal base/skeleton? You might find some tips within the OOAK fairy sculpting hobbyists (OT maybe but relevant here, I think). They have very fine limbs and there may be techniques you could adapt.

    12. That was really helpful. A friend of mine is going to make claws for his tanned skin boy and was wondering how to do it. I suposed real tips or nails for human use, but would have never thought about drinking straws. Amasing adea.:)
And apoxy seems to be good idea also...

    13. I've done multiple sets of claws, [I like claws >_<]. I started with regular two part apoxy but then upgraded to Milliput epoxy and found it works much, much better. I do gouge deeply into the nail bed of the fingers though, giving the milliput something to grip on to and make it effectively permanent. I also take a long time to slowly sand them into perfect shapes. Plastic human nails just don't work unless you never plan on touching the doll after they're on. They break off so easy.

    14. I've been contemplating doing something similar, and my plan of attack would be to use fine, strong wire as an armature under the epoxy and mold the claws separate from the doll, then attach.

    15. This thread really makes me want to try this! XD I've been wanting to for a while but I've never been sure of how to go about it.

    16. ooo, everyone that has posted photos~ they are GREAT!! i am starting a project that will need claws & i was thinking of trying from scratch to start a new set of hands & feet that would fit the body of my doll, but these mods are FAB!! i may try to do something like this as well. wow wow wow! i am so excited.

have any of you ever made additional hands/feet/paws? & have you ever considered casting them? if so, i'd love to see those too! i'll post mine when they are ready. *woot*

    17. Thats Beautiful!

    18. ok after seeing an episode of Gene Simmons family Jewls im afraid to use apoxy. i have to ask how you go about putting them on? do you use tools or just your fingers? and is Milliput just the same as apoxy, and where can you get it?

    19. Just my fingers, sometimes a metal spatula for sculpture, then I sand them after they've cured. Milliput is a type of epoxy putty and you can find it all over the place online, just google. ^_^

    20. Sometimes for wings I use superfine metal mesh (available at hobby stores for armatures) and either MagicSculp (like Apoxie) or the more liquid MagicSmooth, which you can apply and then smooth with wet fingers. Definitely make the nails separately and apply after dyeing. HTH!

    21. Can I has help plz?

I told myself I wasn't going to attempt any mods for sake of ruining Seki!doll...but I'm beginning to change my mind  . For some odd reason, I decided that it would be amusing to give Seki!doll mini claws o_O. Don't ask, but it seems simple enough...

I've looked through the customization forums with different searches as well as google, but I haven't been able to find anything. I was just wondering if someone could point me to a tutorial (that I may or may not have overlooked >.<) or give me some tips on this sort of thing?

    22. <3 the OP. This is great for when I get my Kain. Thanks.

    23. You're welcome. I only knew it was here somewhere as I was reading it a while back...it took me a few searches to find it again. ^-^

    24. This is so awesome XD Definitely going to look for milliput now

    25. wow...i should make this a project for my boy..the nails looks amazing

    26. Does anyone know if like, sculpey would work if i sanded it or something?

im low on funds and high in stock of sculpey... *_*

    27. Sculpy COULD work...but you'd have to make the claws/nails/whatever, remove them from the doll, bake, then glue them onto the doll again...so it's not that sturdy a thing to do for something like claws/nails where the hands are usually handled a lot.

    28. Thanks, Ayas-Shadow. Hmm, i might try the straw thing then. At least for a quick thing.

    29. well actually couldn't work with just baking the claws right on the hands? I know i have stuck hands in the oven so i could change their position, but it was so long ago i cant remember how long that took or if their was a time limit to how long hands can safely be in the oven.

    30. I just know that the temps and times for sculpy are usually higher and longer than I'd want to risk any of my dolly hands being in the oven for fear of them yellowing or even burning. Especially for a mod like claws where there'd be a high chance of them getting broken given how relatively small and/or thin claws on a doll would need to be to look good. every sculpy I've ever used, which is most of them, is just too brittle that thin for it to be worth it, at least to me.

    31. oh yea that makes sense. i was thinking it wouldn't be so bad for the shorter ones like syrinxfox and Illves have done as opposed to the ones CorpseBlossum did. I dont remember what the safe zones are for baking hands but i can see the danger. maybe I'll try it on my spare broken hand anyway. just to see >.<

    32. Metalheadneko, if you do, ould you post pics? id love to see how it works out.

    33. sure I'll post pics.
I just finished putting the sculpty on and I would just like to say at this point, work from the pinky to the thumb and save any nails that are higher than the others for last. (like if the index is slightly raised and pointing, do it last since you will mess it up trying to work around and under it)

ALSO Sculpty III does not like to stick to the hands I have.

    34. These were the best pics I could get. they are in artificial lighting and i used white sculpty
      [IMG][IMG]

Sorry it took so long. Anyway the sculpty claws came out pretty good. I still have some sanding to do but here is what I learned:
Claws made with Sculpty III on SD hands take about 6-10 min to cure in the oven. If you are uncomfortable with the hand being in the oven, Sculpty can be cured with a hairdryer set on low heat, but it takes a lot longer. Also if you shape them into roughly the same shape they are gonna end up you can tap on the tip of the nail and they should come off fairly easily and you can cure them seperately (i did this to the index and ring nail and personaly they my fave)
Also I didn't get pix but there was no color difference between the hand that went in the oven and the hand that stayed out, but I'll keep an eye on it to see if maybe it yellows sooner.

    35. I went searching through this thread for normal nail to claw tipped mods for SD hands, but I could not find specifies on “how-tos”(maybe I am just not looking in the right place?).

I am looking to lengthen the tips of the fingernails on a CD Lance and extend them out into claw tips. I am not looking to go all-out claws, but just a short extension that gives the nails a pointed tip. I know that most people would recommend apoxie, but has anyone use anything else to do such a mod? And how did you do it? And if you did use apoxie, how did it turn out? Was is difficult to make such a small mod? Any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

    36. Is there anyway to get claws made, or make claws for BJD's? My BJD is very dog like, and he needs black claws and was wondering how to go about that :)

    37. Wellp I've got a boy im modding and this just got added to the list of mods to do!~

    38. Wow those all came out so great i think i want to add some to my dragon
