Iridescent glitter and shine pearl for face-ups

Nov 27, 2004

    1. Hi~ ^^
I've wanted to ask this question for a long long time~
How do they put the glitters onto her lips so nicely?
      I've tried Tamiya's shiny glitter gloss but didn't work ... ;(

    2. I thinking of having my vamp head (still to buy  ) with sort of a shimmering dark gray...

What should I use that won't damage or stain the head??

      TIA! :daisy

    3. I've never used it myself, but Liquitex makes an acrylic medium that has shimmery stuff in it. You'd just have to mix it with the paint color of your choice. :daisy

    4. I use platinum silver acrylic paint. It's beautiful, and makes a lovely pearescent sheen.

    5. Most paint with irridecent shimmer to it contains mica. That shouldn't hurt the doll at all. I'd get liquitex's irridecent because it's clear. The other irridecent paints i have are all tinted or mixed with white paint.

You can also thin it with some extender/fluid retarder. It's really great to do subtle glossing on lips or eyes that way. Bear in mind the msc will flatten it a bit, so you might want to put a second layer of shine on after the MSC final layer. :3

    6. I use Talens retarder (not on BJD yet though) and it does give this shimmery, glossy finish as it retards the drying. Ifyou can´t get liquitex I think many brands will do fine as long as they don´t have agressive ingredients, are transparent, and are meant for water based acrylics^^

    7. You can also use pure mica pigments added to your normal paints to add shimmer to any color. I bought mine from a soap and cosmetic supply place and they worked beautifully :chibi

    8. Ooh your Nara looks beautiful, I like the shimmer :D

Bunny, all my "faceups" have been on Blythe dolls  but I can show pics if you are still interested in the effect.

Here's my custom blythe who's eyelids have been painted using coral acrylic paint mixed with a coral mica pigment (it has a tamiya gloss top coat) It's also thinned down and used as eye shadow. Her lips were done by mixing gold mica with the same coral acrylic.

This is a lousy picture, but this dolls lips were done with clear red tamiya acrylics mixed with a cerise mica.

Sorry I don't have any better pics

    9. I've tried many ways to add shimmer. I find that plain makeup and glitter do the trick nicely, though I would coat my doll first so that it sticks better and won't stain. Alot of makeup has mica in it and comes in a varity of colors so you don't have to mix things and such.

      Good luck!

    10. I'm thinking more like a craft store. It's also used for fimo or sculpy and as a colorant in soaps. It wouldn't hurt to try the beauty supply. I personally haven't seen it there, but maybe give them a call and see if they know what you're talking about ;)

    11. *snicker* prolly not :P the closest I've seen to this in a beauty supply store would be loose eye shadows :P I know they have some gorgeous colours, but I was really hoping to get a more neutral shade that I could mix with a bunch of colours :)

but thanks :) I'll try Michaels or Joann's or something else nearby :)

    12. The "Bare Minerals" line of makeup is oil-free and provides beautiful shimmer -- I've also used Barry M Dazzle Dust when painting Aislinn's lips, and it turned out really natural and sexy. The shimmer particles are fine enough that you can apply them with a damp brush and get very fine detail on lips or eyes.

      -- Andi :)

    13. stamping and scrapbooking area of the craft store should have the mica powders in a large rannge, one brand I can think of is pearlex or pearl-ex and comes in something like 40 colours.

Personally for painting I use golden paints interferance colours and the metallics, I mix them in with extender medium to getthe barest sheen. I prefer the golden paints because i find the speck size of the mica very fine and it gives a sheen rather than a sparkle. I'm so tempted to do my entire doll in the interferance gold but I'm worried I won't get it completely flawless and I'm such a perfectionist at heart

    14. They are loose glitter which makes me think that they wouldn't have any oil in them. Has anyone ever used any kind of loose glitter before? The reason I'm asking is because they are on sale until the 14th.

    15. I have used loose glitter on my My Little Pony Customs.
IT does bleed the color on to the pony. So, I know they bleed on the ponies so i wouldn't risk it on my dollies.

    16. I've got glitter as part of Chy's current faceup, and haven't noticed any problems as far as staining goes. It's on the top layer, though, so it has five or six coats of Testor's between it and his skin. The one thing that has been an issue are the individual piecs flaking off - I attached it with white glue but didn't seal it, in case it didn't look right or I wanted to take it off later. It seems to be alright as long as I'm not rubbing at or poking it, though.

    17. I use glitter all the time for my dolls. I've found the loose very fine type in white iridescent works best and you don't have to worry about it bleeding.

    18. Hi everybody, I was hoping if you could help me with this!

I bought this product from volks some time ago, and I know that it is supposed to be used as a polishe for the lips to glow and all this, but I don't know how to use it excactly:? , am I supposed to dilute it in water???Or something else*_* ?The color is pink.

It is a silly question I know:sweat , but I 'm new at this and need some help?Total amateur!!!I would appreciate it if you could help me out a bit!!!:)

      Thanks a lot!!!:)

    19. You're sapose to mix it with clear gloss so that the gloss becomes all shiny and sparkly. The ratio you mix will determine how sparkly it will be.

    20. If you mix it too thick, you'll end up with a pearlescent paint, so don't use too much.

It only takes a tiny bit, really.

    21. sorry if this has been asked already but. . .

instead of using the pearl powder on the volksusa site, is it okay to use this:

      ?

does it even matter what kind of powder you use?
or are they pretty much all the same?

    22. Are you going to mix the pearl powder with pastels or are you painting with acrylics? If paint, every brand has not only pearl colors, but pearlized mediums.

If with pastels - I don't know about how concentrated the stuff you're looking at is. Are you looking for a pure "pearl" color layer, or just a glimmer to the colors you're putting on? You could also add a layer of pearlized medium by itself over a sealed layer of pastels. By adding extra clear matt (or gloss) medium, you could control the amount of the pearling. Hmm - for that matter, you could possibly mix the stuff you're looking at with clear acrylic medium and adjust the pearl effect level too --

    23. I use those type of pearl powders. :3 I use it on my gloss layer. If you want to put it over a matte layer you can mix it with matte liquid sealer. if you spray MSC over it it will lose it's luster. the kind i actually use came in four different "interference" colors. I dip a damp paint brush into the powder, then mix that with my gloss.

    24. ahh yes

i was going to go for a 'glam/smokey' eye effect on my doll
and perhaps use some on the lips. . .

      i dont use MSC.
      i use grumbacher 'matte' sealer.
      will that work?

    25. Is it a spray on sealer or a liquid you paint on? To mix the pearl powder in it needs to be a liquid you paint. If the grumbacher is a matte spray on it'll cancel the effect of the pearlescent on the painted parts, so you want to paint on your pearls last. :3

    26. oh i see!

well the grumbacher's is a spray on, unfortunately.
but i can still use it hopefully?
just be sure to not coat the pealescent stuff?

oh dear. looks like i have to add some items to my artsupply list
first i need to replace my gel medium gloss and now this :sweat

    27. I haven't used a powder, but just know to keep your pearlescents thin when mixing with your medium. I lost all the detail I'd done to Zooka's lips when I added that pearl coat on last, because there was too much on the brush. Sigh!

    28. I have an awesome very pale green/gold combo nailpolish made with the tiny mica/metal (?) flakes so it changes colors as it turns in the light. I would love to do something like this on the nails of my doll - but I'm not sure whether there is anything safe to use to do it?

I don't know whether the polish itself is safe, all I can find is a thread saying not to use dark nail polish lest it stain but I am not sure if it will have a chemical composition problem, and I have some acrylic paints that have the same light effect but realized I don't know if I can use acrylics on the resin either. What do you think?

    29. you could also try putting very very fine glitter on top of the acrylic paint. I know there is a such thing as "glitter catalogs" for buying the glitter you want.

    30. If you wanted to add glitter on top of acrylics, I bet you could use some of that body glitter that's sort of a gel for humans. lol
er... Sorry, I was just trying to think of a way for the glitter to stick on. :)

    31. I know most people use the japanese branded one..Shine Pearl or something? but while I was in a local craft shop yesterday..I saw a few others similar pearl powder that they use for acrylic painting and some also for..embossing? I'm wondering if its safe to use them for faceups? O_O (or if its actually the same thing lol XDDD)

    32. While I haven't tried it myself, I know some people like PearlEx for this.

    33. Yup, PearlEx, use it like you would pastels, gives a nice shine.

    34. PearlEx is ok to use but make sure you get the right type. PearlEx sells various pigments the best to add shine are the intereference and pearlescent pigments

The metallics, duo, and traditionals are more opaque.

The interefererence adds shine to gloss. It reflects the color of the interference color stared so interference gold gives a slight goldtoned shine.

Pearlescent when added to gloss gives you a pearly like paint. Slightly transluscent if not too much pigment is added

      I hope that helps

    35. hihi
i know before this, many had asked about pearly and glittery stuff for face ups.. but i have searched through many pages of this section of the forum and i can't find a thing!
is there a compilation of all the information on these already? if not, i hope to start this thread to compile everything about pearly and glittery face ups here so that it would be easier for everyone and i to look up on it...

so i have a few questions:

      1)what is best for glittery/pearly....:
      eyelids
      cheeks
      lips
as in powder or paint? or is there a spray? human makeup?

      2)What brands to get?
most importantly.. what is SAFE and what is not..
which brands of human make up can be used?(those with no oil?)

3)Where to get them in different countries?(because different countries offer different stuff)

      4)Techniques?
what is the most natural way to put these on dolls?
      what methods look best?

      any help is appreciated!

    36. There are "interference" acrylics that can be painted on which add a great shine.

    37. I had some water-based acrylic glaze that worked well, I only used it on eyelids, but it would be nice on lips too. This one's a golden pearly color, and there's another one I've seen that's almost clear, but it's pearly and iridescent :3 (at a different angle, the color went purple-y blue)

the brand is Golden(Artistic Colors), and it's the satin-finish glaze :) hope that helps~

    38. I've used pearlescent chalks before. They're great for eyeshadow, lips and cheek blush. Use a big, soft make-up brush or cotton wool to apply. ^^

    39. There's also a product called mica dust. I use it to make my little clay figures all metallic/glittery. It must be safe for resin as well...

    40. Human makeup works with the skin, and since dolls don't have HUMAN skin (doi), human maekup wouldn't work aswell..

Besides..some of the chemicals might damage the resin! xD

There was this shimmery powder stuff which you mix in with the paint that you're going to use for the part you're gonna paint.......but.......I forgot what it was called.. --headdesk--

    41. for most resin make-ups, my friends mix Mr Color pearl giltter thing with the colors she will do make up with using airbrush or paint brush. in this way everything gets applied evenly and nicely with a subtle glittery glow

    42. You could always use a glitter medium to seal the paint you used.

I have FolkArt shiny glitter gloss, it cost me 98 cents for a 2oz bottle. Most art supplies stores have it.

It will last for a good while.

    43. As far as mica powders go my favorite is PearlEx pigments. It's a powder that you can brush on or mix in with the medium of your choice. It comes in a range of colors however the pictures on their site don't do it justice. Here's a picture of my set, you can click it to enlarge:

It is 100% safe to use on your doll. here's what it says on their website:

I got the 32 color set from my local DickBlick. You can get it in smaller quanties, one jar at a time or 6 and 12 color sets. The 32 color set was priced $53 but I got 10% off because I'm a student. You can see where I've used some on face-ups I've done from the link in my signature. If you want some and can't find it locally I'd be willing to go pick some up for you at cost.

    44. wow jerrysugarav! that is a wonderful range of glittery powders!!i hope i can find some here.. can i ask you for help again if i can't find any? i have yet to find time to go to the art stores...
and i love ur face ups

    45. I use Wave Pearl Powder and love it to death, but I'm drooling over that PearlEx stuff there. Woooo.

    46. I use Shine Pearls! You can pick them up right off the VolksUSA site, and its not too expensive! ^^

    47. i saw a Mr Colour pearl spray today at a shop.. think it would work?

    48. I second this! I use the Shine pearls, and they are like a dream to use! I normally put them on after the final coat of MSC, right before I put on the gloss for the lips, and upper eyelids. Sometimes I will brush some on the cheeks, lips, and eyelids before the final coat of MSC for a slightly iridescent look. My latest face-up with the Shine pearl was this:

    49. wow! the colours are so nice!!!
by the way... is the glitter eye make up from Splash safe for dolls? the sales girls told me it's only glitter and there is no oil content.. it says on the label it contains mica..

    50. I have two of the PearlEx powders I can say they work great applied directly on, or mixed with any medium
(mixing them with colored mediums will obviously change their saturation, hue and body). I have only tried the silver
ones, I used them with gloss on my boy's nails and it looked great, I don't have any good photos of it sadly.

Does anyone know if the PearlEx, pearl-colored powders have any mixes of actual pearls in them, or are they just the
treated mica powders? I'm vegan so this is important to me, and what's kept me from trying them, I live in a super small
town, there are no art stores so I cannot read the materials for myself, and most online-art stores don't list
materials or contents per items. Thanks. ^___^

    51. Google says "Pearl Ex: the 'original' pigmented mica. Not cosmetic quality, but wonderful pigmentation."

    52. They have Pearl Ex products at "Pearl" art supplies stores.
They have (at least in my area) a fine selection of sets and individual tubs of the powder.
But in my opinion, Pearl Ex in general is VERY pricey.
Pearl Shine from Volks works just as well and is a larger amount of the product.
The set of Pearl Ex powders that comes with many colors is cool, but the jars are the size of small lip gloss containers. I am sure they can go a looong way with doll face ups though.

I am still debating on whether I will take the plunge and buy the set! @__@

      *Jen

    53. Relatively speaking Pearl Shine is really not a larger amount of the product. I could probably mix up 3-4 bottles of pearl shine with just the amount of Pearl-Ex in one of the tiny jars in the big set. When I mix it in with gloss I use the end of my x-acto knife to get the bare minimal amount out on my palette then mix it with a drop of my gloss. Saying it goes a long way is an understatement.

    54. It's odd because the sampler set (the one shown on here with *lots* of colors) I saw has *very* small jars, the Pearl Shine bottle was *much* larger in comparison. Maybe the sample set of Pearl Ex comes in different sizes.:? But the small set was 60 bucks!*_*
Ohh wait, maybe Pearl Ex is more "potent". That must be the reason. Pearl Shine is definately less pigmented.

In that case, I will definately be picking up the sampler style set of Pearl Ex.

    55. I was at Blick's today, buying what basically amounted to a beginner's face-up kit. While I was browsing acrylic gloss varnishes, I found Pearl-Ex Pigments, basically powdered pigment made of mica.

The cup (and site description), says that the powder can be mixed with various paints, clays, or brushed on and then sealed.

It comes in pearls and metallics, and runs about $4.11 per cup, but there's a LOT in there.

Link to Product on Blick's Site

Just curious if anyone has heard of it, or used it? It got me all excited. XD

    56. Lovely stuff, resin-safe and fun to use.

      • x 1
    57. My neighbor gave me some of those, because she didn't need them.
      I wasn't sure they were resin-safe, but they're just a dry powder.

Thanks Victoria for clearing that up.
      ^^

    58. just my 2 cents....

I've used these pearlescent powders on faceups, it works great when mixed with gloss varnish and used on the lips & eyes.

However I've tried unsuccessfully to use it as a blushing effect - whenever you seal it with MSC, the fantastical "matte" quality of MSC really cancels out the shinyness of the pearly stuff and pretty much makes it invisible.

so, I suppose the only way you can use it this way is an after effect - after your final coat of MSC, but that means it could come off with time & handling (re-applications most likely necessary). is that true?

    59. Pearl Ex is also available in individual bottles at most scrapbooking stores. as it is a staple of scrapbookers and stampers.

As with every other art supply the more pigment, the more expensive it is. Hence, Pearl Ex, being very concentrated, is very expensive. But being very concentrated means a little goes a very long way indeed.
