LIP GLOSS Glossing your dolls lips

Oct 1, 2004

    1. What type of materials do you use for glossing lips?

    2. I use clear acrylic gloss for my dolls lips, but you really gotta pile it up for it to gloss.

      I need something with a high gloss level..

    3. I wonder, has anyone tried clear nail polish for this? That would guarantee a very high gloss, but might be a bit stubborn to remove...

    4. Mr. Super Clear is the spray, Mr. Color is the paint. It's just regular paint in a glass jar. It comes in a few versions of clear or glossy.

    5. I use clear nail polish to gloss lips :O it looks great...I haven't had the yellowing problem...but then again I redo faceups every now and then. XD;;

    6. I was thinking ,we have one of those nail shops in town ,you know the type with very high quality Acrylic nail laquer (they dont call it nail varnish ) as this is acrylic based it should be OK and not yellow , WARHAMMER also do a high shine varnish in their paint collection , that should be OK too :grin: ,

    7. Nailpolish/varnish/laquer is made to be put on fingernails, and I don't think it will stay on for more than a few days with wear and tear (on human fingernails). If left on it may yellow over time.. or it might stay tacky and not dry at all. At any rate it isn't made to be painted on and last a long time (except when you put it on runs in stockings).

      Acrylic paint is made to last. Mr. Color is afaik enamel paint, but is intended for dolls, so it must be good. It's not hard, and not expensive to get a bottle/jar of gloss varnish from Jo Sonja, Folkart, Tamiya, Citadel etc.

    8. Djinn was supposed to have glossed Shiina's lips with her proper Mr. (name) acrylic gloss after I repainted them, but I was impatient and went ahead with a bottle of nail topcoat (the kind that is tinted a slight blue). Went on smoothly, glossed nicely with one coat, and hasn't yellowed or worn off since that I've noticed. It was about a month ago I put it on, I think.

    9. What do you use to gloss your dollfies' lips? I finished Trent's new face-up but I think he'd look much prettier with shiny lips... I just don't know how! ^-^;; Can anyone recommend a product for me (hopefully somethign I can pick up at a local art store, lol!)? Also, do you simply paint it on and let it dry? And do you coat it afterwards? I'm worried that using MSC over gloss would make the gloss look flat, but I'm also worried about it chipping. Has anyone ever had a chipping problem with it? Thanks!

    10. Most of my dolls have been coated and it hasn't affected the shininess of their lips at all. But I do know of some people who have lost it.. so maybe it varies? Sorry I can't be of more help.

    11. Clear nail polish is what I used on mine. After I finished painting the face and adding the blush, I used MSC flat. Then I applied the clear nail polish over the lips.

      Hasn't chipped off at all yet! I didn't apply a thick coat, just enough to cover the lips.

    12. I use (and I think a lot of others as well) Winsor & Newton Acrylic Gloss Varnish. It's really shiney, though you need two or three coats. ^^

    13. A similar thing happened to me. I sprayed Mr. SC on my doll's head last weekend. Although the Mr. SC did its job keeping her pretty face matted, it lost the pretty shiny gloss on my doll's lips. T^T

      Is Winsor & Newton a type of gloss you would find at an art supply store or is it clear nail polish gloss?

    14. Windsor & Newton is a major maker of art supplies (paints, mostly), and is almost always to be found in art stores. It's very common!!! Now, they may not carry that specific gloss varnish in every art store... ! But the brand is very common.

    15. I use model maser 4638 clear gloss acrylic. it's like.. $3 for the bottle and it works pretty well ^_^

    16. I just went to the art store last week and purchased "Liquitex High Gloss Varnish." This was perfect for me when I need to re-gloss my girl's lips after spraying her head with MSC flat. (It matted everything!)

      Its roughly about $5.00 for a 4 oz. bottle.

    17. Actually, I use clear nail polish. *laugh* It works really well to get a good gloss on lips, imo. :grin:

    18. Hm, I always thought the water-soluble, acrylic kind was fairly easy to get off with acetone. There's another sort that you have to thin with turpentine, though, that I imagine would be more permanent. And possibly dangerous. x_x

    19. I just put on retarder after a coat of msc over the color.
      heres a pic.. sorry the shine only shows a little, because it was overcast.

    20. I've used and had no problems removing clear nail polish from my doll's lips. Since you use acetone to clean the faceup off anyway...that's what nail polish remover contains, so it comes right off.

    21. I use Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish. It comes off with rubbing alcohol. I prefer to use rubbing alcohol to remove facepaint as it doesn't smear as badly.

    22. Ohh, I was just going to ask this question...

      No one has noticed any discoloring or anything from using clear nail polish have they?

      *and roux, your doll is beautiful <3*

    23. While nail polish can yellow, it's a matter of months or years, rather than a couple of months.

      And more sunlight will hasten the process--but sunlight (UV) is bad for the resin of all the dolls, too, so I don't have to tell you not to leave your poor doll out in sunshine for months on end.

    24. xDDD;;

      well, since i'm going there to buy Grumbachers, i'm wondering if they have some sort of a cheap gloss that i can use :grin:

      i WOULD use clear nailpolish, but from what i've heard around the forums, it's gooey and can do some damage to your doll o__o;

      any suggestions will be fine ^^;;

      and also, i found this gloss at Joanns... it's for glossing clay that you bake.. wtf? xD
      anyways... yea <__<;
      i wasnt sure if i should get it or not because on the jar, it didnt say anything about what the gloss is made of, and i'm cautious about the whole "oil ruins your doll" thing :oops:

    25. Actually, i have used nail polish clearcoat on my doll, and it works nicely :D
      it comes right off with cleaner, and it hasn't damaged my girl at all-

    26. Doesn't the kind for clay have to be baked? :oops:

      Try looking for Liquitex, yes. That's what I use and I love the high gloss. :3

    27. I looked around the board and couldn't find the answer to this...so sorry if this has been asked before. :oops:

      In face-ups, when glossing the lips/eyelids, you are NOT supposed to use clear nail polish, right? (It's supposed to stain the resin or something, I think.) Instead, you're supposed to paint over it with gloss varnish, aren't you? (Too bad...I just found a whole bottle of clear nail polish the other day...)

      Can anybody give me a brand name for the kind of gloss varnish they've used, and where I can find some? I'm probably just being paranoid, but it got pointed out to me earlier that this sort of thing can react in TOTALLY different ways depending on the brand and what you use it on...so what's safe for use with resin? And is it something I could pick up in my local craft/hardware store, or do I need to order it from somewhere? (And, uh, does it come in relatively small amounts, or do I need to buy a whole jug of it? x.x I don't think I'm going to need that much, even if I end up doing a whole bunch of face-ups...)

      Thank you! :D

    28. Varnish and nail polish are BOTH bad! You dont want to use things with a strong slovent base.

      From what I understand, most people do the same as I do, which is use gloss medium that is meant to be used with acrylic paints (looking at the bottle, mine does say "gloss medium and varnish" )

      The one I have is M.Graham & Co. Artit's acrylic gloss medium

      I think most people have said liquitex, which is just a diffrent brand. I got the Graham instead because it was runny (makes it easier for me to avoid brush marks) some of them look like a white paste in a tub, this was milky looking. They all look pretty much the same when dry.
      I would not recomend modge podge, Ive had it do wierd things (like get marks when the humidity is high) and yellow.

    29. You CAN use clear nailpolish to gloss areas of you dolls faceup, how can it stain if it has no colour? As long as it is acrylic and not enamel, you should be fine.

      It is probably better though, to invest in a small jar of Tamiya Color X-22 which is a clear glossy acrylic varnish. I got it from my local hobby store. Brands like Jo Sonja and Folkart also have gloss varnishes.

    30. The key word in all of this is ACRYLIC. That's what's okay for resin.

    31. I use Windsor & Newton acrylic gloss medium. It came in a fairly small glass bottle, and so far has been quite safe on dolls.

    32. I would recommend a gloss varnish instead of clear nail polish because clear nail polish tends to yellow fairly quickly over time.

    33. What kind/brand of gloss do you generally use for your doll's lips?
      Do you apply it before or after coating the doll's face?
      Thanks a lot! :daisy

    34. I use Liquitex Gloss Medium... it goes on slightly opaque and dries to a perfect clear shine. You can paint on one thin coat, or you can layer it for extra shine and depth. Whether you apply it before or after coating depends on how shiny you want it... the spray will matte the gloss slightly. I always apply it afterwards. ^_^

    35. I use clear nail polish after spraying... >_<

    36. Haha Revlon top coat for nails. XD

    37. Sculpy Glaze - it's water based so it can be mixed with water for a less glossy look. Love it ^_^

    38. Tamiya Acrylic Paint X-22 (Clear).

    39. I use clear nailpolish after spraying as well.

    40. Windsor & Newton acrylic gloss.

    41. just some cheapo folkart gloss varnish, but it works just as well as more expensive products ;)

    42. I use the windsor and newton acrylic gloss too. I like how it is very thin and just lays a fine layer of gloss, it picks up shine without looking like a sheet of glass is laid over the top of teh lips

    43. I use liquitex gloss medium...

      I mixed it with some of the pearlized pain today and got some really awesome results!

    44. The glossy-lips topic mentioned 'Gloss Varnish' and 'Gloss Medium'. I know nothing whatsoever about shiny bottled poison, and my local options are kind of limited. >_<

      I've got a bottle of 'Gloss Exterior/Interior Varnish' and a bottle of a 'Satin Interior Varnish'. Both came from the acrylic paint section, and both are water-based - however, the former says that it's 'Super-Tough Polyurethane', which unsettles me somewhat, since I keep thinking the dolls are polyurethane themselves. I'm having these awful images of the varnish bonding with Chy's mouth and being stuck with smudgy black lips for all eternity. ^^' The other just says that it's 'a durable protective finish' (and also that it's non-toxic, which I suppose is always a plus).

      Soo...which one do I want to use, given that I'm mainly concerned with what will come away more easily with acetone/thinner/the remover of then month? Are both safe, or should I stick with the non-poly finish?

    45. Those sound more like hard ware type paints, if they are, than niether is the right thing (by hard ware I mean decorator stuff, like you blend into house paint) *_*

    46. Mmm... I'll check my semi-gloss when I get home, but yes, those don't sound like acrylic. I don't know if I'd chance it. ^^;;;

      Open to using clear nailpolish, hon?

    47. Oh, I have those exact paints - they're just acrylic varnishes. I used the gloss interior/exterior varnish for lips. It needs several coats to get really shiny. I think even MSD is polyurethane based, isn't it?

    48. As far as I know, they're craft paint stuff. That's where they came from, and they're tiny little bottles that would be a drop in a bucket to a can of house paint. (Unless house paint comes in tiny little bottles, too, but I've never looked at it ^^;).

      My nail polish is roughly ten years old. ^^;; We had Folk Art gloss a few weeks ago, but Wal-Mart cleared out their stock before I could get any. *Mumbles and kicks shelves* This wouldn't be a problem if I had any hope of getting over to Michael's, but I don't. (You'd think with every day off, my mother could take me somewhere, but no, supposedly, we don't even have enough money for a measly little bottle of gloss. For gods' sake, it's not like I can eat. We could use the money we're wasting on trying to feed me! XD )

    49. How does one make pretty deep rosy red lips? what type of gloss? do i use paint or water color pencials and i know everyone says to use many different color strokes to give the lip depth are those paint or color pencial. does any one have any good brand names?

      i am so lost. help :roll:

    50. i will direct u to the page that have the lip gloss part, u may wana go read the whole thread though coz so many membrs gave info about face ups and defrant brands to use:

    51. Hi!

      Today I started thinking, 'yes, come tomorrow I will have everything I need to do a faceup, if ever one shall be done,' as my MSC should be arriving tomorrow. However, I suddenly realized that I don't have any gloss. o.O;

      So my question to you wonderful people of DoA, is that is there a fairly inexpensive gloss that won't hurt my doll that I could buy at Wal-mart? x_x Like, the Folk-art or Modge Podge, would those hurt the dollie? What about 'gloss -varnish-'?

      I have read the other threads, but it doesn't make me confident about buying things. ^^; Also, I've read that you can use a clear nail polish topcoat, but.. I don't feel too comfortable using nail polish on my dollie's head. *_*

      Thank you. ^.^

    52. Nailpolish gloss doesn't harm them : D I use it on Lewis's face, and it works fine and I've yet to come across any negative effects.

    53. I think that will probably be least expensive.. ^^; What's the best brand to use?

    54. I'd imagine one would have to be careful what sort of nailpolish gloss they use, as some can stain nails yellow....I'd imagine it would do so to resin as well. I'd stick to a more reputable brand, like Salley Hansen.

    55. I don't care what anyone says, there is no way I can trust anything that smells like nailpolish.. I've seen it eat into some kinds of plastic so I'm really wary of the solvents in it. Even if there are no visible effects I still worry. I use winsor and newton acrylic gloss varnish, it was about $4 for the bottle and is quite big but you can get smaller bottles of other kinds .. anything that is acrylic should be fine as it doesn't contain solvents. read the labels, if it says caution: Flammable then it has solvents in it

    56. I went to Walmart today, and we looked at the only gloss varnish they had versus the nail polish (I was looking at the Revlon top coat).

      We decided to go with the varnish. If anyone know this as being ill to resin, please tell me NOW before I use it. XD

      Here's what I bought:

      Delta Ceramcoat - Gloss Exterior/Interior Varnish

      Super-tough Polyurethane

      The back says:

      A clear, super-tough protective finish with a glossy sheen. Waterbased for easy clean-up.

      It was $5.96 at Walmart, where as the nail polish top coat (all they had was the toughening type) was $3.88.

      If anyone has had bad experiences with this, please tell me. ;_;

    57. The best soulution!

      Find a local hobby store and try Tamiya gloss! It's about $3 a bottle and what a gloss it is!

      It's acrylic so it cleans with water,and thins with rubbing alcohol for airbrushing.

      I'm very anti nailpolish! :wink:

    58. I love Sculpy gloss - it's water based so it can be diluted for a not-so-shiny look too ^_^

    59. does anybody else have the problem of stuff sticking to the lips or other parts where gloss has been applied?

      i've had my DoD Si (and i got makeup done from DoD) for about 2 1/2 weeks now and a lot of the lip stuff on the outside of his lips is gone from it getting dirty and gray then me trying to get the dirt off and taking the gloss off too!

      anyway to remedy this? i know a lot of nailpolish topcoat dries very hard but i don't want to risk the whole 'eating the resin thing'

      sorry if i'm taking over the thread i just want help!

      ~Dottie

    60. Well, if you take off the gloss when you wash his face, why not just reapply a different brand of gloss (like the Windsor & Newton (sp?) brand)? It's possible that simply the brand you have won't dry completely, or just isn't very good. Did you shake the bottle up first? ^^;

      I haven't used my gloss yet, but it seems to work pretty well (I tested it on some paper, and it's not sticky at all). It could even be that there was too much or too little applied.
