Doll eyelash creation tutorial

Aug 23, 2007

    1. Hobby Japan Magazine September issue had a tutorial made for the U-noa Quluts Zero (Unon) on how to make your own doll eyelashes. This of course could work for any doll, and since I thought the tutorial was useful I had my (non-doll loving, male, Japanese) friend Reiji translate it.

The direct link to the tutorial translation is here, but I'm posting the whole tutorial on this thread as well. If the images on this thread don't work for whatever reason (they are hosted on photobucket) then please refer to the direct link since that server is more reliable.

Araki used a natural bristle brush for this but I think using a brush made of an artificial materials could get you more color choices, blond lashes, white lashes.. i've even seen kids paintbrushes in green and yellow so this is very helpful for someone who wants more versatility in eyelashes in terms of color look and size.

edit: tweezers are missing from the material list, but everything else is correct.

    2. haha wonderful tutorial!

    3. Thats so handy tutorial *subscribes*. Fake eyelashes cost too mutch at store, but this is a very good and simple idea to make lashes. Thanks :)

    4. I am a little confused, does the sellotpe stay on to hold the lashes together- it seems to go from sellotape on it back and front to no sellotape?

    5. This tutorial is awesome!!

I think these eyelashes look better then the false ones that most people use.. you could even leave them unpainted for a natural look.. I am definately going to try it out.. thanks for the scan and the translation!

    6. I'm also a bit confused on what happens with the tape.

    7. From what I see, most of the tape is cut off so there's only around 1mm holding the lashes together.

    8. Thanks for posting it's very interesting

    9. :D I never even thought of anything like this! I'd much rather do this than have to wait for lashes to ship. ^-^ Thank you so much for posting this!

    10. This tutorial is great! I have lots of paintbrushes laying around. One comment though; it would be best to use natural bristle brushes because as the hair grows, it is thinner at the end and thickens, exactly as our eyelashes grow. But on artificial brushes the hair thickness is the same throughout, like a tube. There are a lot of colors of natural brushes, but if you want a cream base to dye, you can use goat hair, or pony hair that's in the bamboo sumi-e brushes.

    11. This would be interesting to try. Thanks for the pictures and translation.

    12. Huh, that's awesome. Thanks for translating. :)

    13. thats good~

i think maybe i will try it one day

    14. Wow! This tutorial is awesome!

Your friend did a wonderful job translating!

    15. Your welcome everyone, I'll forward all thanks to Reiji as well. :D

You cut most of the tape off. I still see it there, well at least in the magazine. These are scans and my scanner isn't exactly new.. :sweat

All the artificial brushes I have are thicker at the end and thinner at the tip like real brushes, maybe it just depends on what you buy.

    16. I'd nevr have thought of using brushes but when you see this tutorial it seems so obvious:doh . Thank you so much for that!!

    17. Wow!:D
      This helps out soooo much!
I was worried where I'd find eyelashes since I'm not allowed to buy many things online.

      One question though.
What kind of glue would be safe to use?

    18. What a great tutorial! Now I want to make some lashes.

    19. On the tutorial it originally said to use super glue but I disagree. One of my dolls had eyelashes super glued in by the customizer who originally done the faceup (I was the third or fourth owner of the doll and the faceup was by a famous aesthetic artist), something bumped into and crushed the eyelashes and when I tried to get them off it almost ruined the faceup. I'd recommend using pvc/elmer's white glue or elene's tacky glue. Something that will hold it on, but make it possible to remove the eyelashes if needed. As long as you handle your doll's head/face carefully (which you should do regardless) you shouldn't need anything stronger than that,

    20. Ooooh! That is such a interesting tutorial. I'd like to try making a pair but I can't stand the thought of destroying a brush just for that purpose. >_<

    21. Omg this helps so much *-* Thank you for posting!!

    22. Thanks so much for posting this, what a great tutorial! I have been waiting for more than 2 months now for the eyelashes I ordered in my local doll shop, and my dolls' eyes are still naked. Never thought of using brushes though, I was almost prepared to cut some of my own hair...:doh

    23. Ha! This is amazing! Thank you and your translator friend so much!! These eyelashes look MUCH nicer than the ones you can buy from a doll company. I can't wait to try it!

    24. Favouriting this for sure! Please pass on my thanks to your friend for translating it, and thanks to you for scanning and posting!

    25. Awesome!! - cuts up brushes -

    26. Wonderful tutorial! I'm gonna try this ^_^ - You would't believe how many brushes I got stuck with at home after my GCSEs ended o.o;;;

    27. Your welcome everyone :D be sure to post pictures if you ever use this tutorial!

    28. Do you know if these can be relied on for permanency, say I don't want to change them ever. Would the tape always hold? Is it normal scotch tape? I really like the idea, I just don't want them to fall apart or something, as the tape ages. Do you think a piece of clear jewelery making line(the plastic stretchy kind) glued to the brush would work?? Hmm...I will have to try this for something else I do.

    29. The permanency depends on a lot of things. No eyelashes are permanent in my opinion. If you change the eyes, or if anything brushes against them or as you mentioned the glue aging and whatnot.

I think as long as you don't use cheap tape you don't need to worry about it for at least a year. If you frequently change eyes or eye position then less time of course.

Also the type of glue you use is a good factor. I wouldn't recommend using anything other than normal craft glue since I don't know how anything else would react to the resin and I frequently change the eye position of my dolls. I don't know what jewelery making line is made of, since I don't make jewelery. Even if they did fall apart it should be no problem re-making them. If you don't touch your doll very often then I suppose they would be just as permanent as any other doll eyelashes.

    30. wow that is really really helpful!! ^__^

    31. Thanks so much for the post and translation. Hobby stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby often have sales on their brushes- I bet a fan brush could be used if you wanted to make extra-thick/long eyelashes. I'll have to try this one out!

    32. That is really fun, thanks for posting it!

    33. Neither could I! It's such an awesome tutorial, but I can't myself buying a nice natural hair brush and then cutting it up :XD:. I'd want to paint with it!

    34. Such great idea!!! I don't wanna destroy my painting brush but I have many junk make-up brushes that I bought long ago so I'll test it on them.

    35. This is superb.
      Very clear tutorial too.
      Thanks for posting!!

    36. that's a great tutorial, anyone tried doing eyelashes like that? If yes, post the pictures please! :D

    37. That's true. I wouldn't want to wreck a nice brush and all my other brushes are too crappy to use for this. But I bet you could buy some saran hair or human hair extensions and do the same thing though. Very useful tutorial :)

    38. Much thanks to you and your friend Reiji! This is really brilliant! ^^

    39. I did it! But it came out HORRIBLE. I made about... 3-4 individual ones... but so far none of them have worked at all, just goes to show you that practice really helps! As soon as I get another brush to maul, I'm going at it again! If I get any good results I shall share my pics!

      *determined*

    40. How did the spatula thing curl it?
They just pressed it into the hair and it curled?
It seems like the hairs would unstraighten themselves..

    41. Assumingly you've never used a real life eyelash curler? :sweat The pressure causes them to curl, using the palm of your hand will heat the hair a little to hold the curl longer. Once you paint over them with acrylic paint (similar to how women use mascara in real life) it will "set" the curl.

If you wanted to skip the acrylic paint step, I'd suggest warming the tool you use to curl the hair by dipping it in warm water before use. This is what I do when I use human lashes for dolls.

    42. Wow! That is fascinating. Thanks for posting!

    43. ooh, great tutorial! many thanks for the scan and the translation! I need to find some brushes now :)

    44. Thanks for posting this!
I will have to try it sometime in the future.

    45. What a clever idea. And if a pale enough natural bristle brush was purchased, the fibres could be dyed different colours with inks...

    46. This was so much fun to find! Thanks for putting it up-and thanks to your friend for translating. I had a stash of old brushes somewhere...dunno what quality, but if they turn up I'll be trying this.

    47. Wow. That's so much easier then what I did.
But I am a little worried about what some other people said about the tape holding. Me, personally. I'd stop after the first piece of tape, lay if flat on one of my non-stick mats, fibers up, and gently paint the tape with slightly watered down tacky glue. Dry, two more coats, and then move on. Otherwise I'd be afraid of the glue in the tape wearing out to fast/the lashes to easily pulled. But that's just me.
It's sorta what I did with my 1/6 dolls lashes. But I trimmed some fibers off a long braid of black synth then just spaced them out on one of the mats, put a line of tacky glue on top, and with a wet finger smooshed it in. Then when it dried, I trimmed that up, and put them in. Looks pretty good. I wasn't about to spend 5 dollars on lashes for 1/6 doll. I'm to cheap for that, especially when she doesn't go anywhere. But I'm babbling.

Thank you so much for the tutorial, it's truly helpful, and I will definitly be doing that to some of my makeup brushes when I get my girl from AS!

    48. Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial, I would never have thought to do this. I think the creative possiblities alone would make this worth trying. :)

You did a wonderful job of translation, it was an easy tutorial to follow.

    49. That's neat, but it seems like a bad idea to me to cut up a $5-6 paintbrush (natural hair) when you can just get a pack of individual fake lashes for $2 at Wal-Mart .. o___o

    50. you can make up to 6 lashes with one brush, and you won't get that natural lash looks with individual lashes seeing as all those little segments are the same length.

    51. It would seem like a good idea to get the cheaper version at Walmart. I tried it twice, but both times the eyelashes started cracking off of the eye and falling apart after only a couple of weeks.

    52. What a creative idea! Thank you for posting up this tutorial!

    53. It's really helpfull. Thanks for posting.

    54. wow... that is so interesting O_OOO

      thanks so much for scanning/translating!

    55. Thank you for the tutorial!

      Must try it^^

    56. This is really useful~ I have to try it some time! Thanks for sharing :3

    57. That's great!! Thanks so much for sharing this! I didn't want to buy white eyelashes because the shipping would cost more than the product, now I can go ahead and make some. <3

    58. Thank So much for this tutorial!:D
I have tried it already. The eyelashes are beautiful. Hope I will be able to upload a picture of my Minifee Shushu with the self made eyelashes soon.

    59. *wow* what a wonderful tutorial. I may give this a try since one of my girls has a bit of a wonky eyelash bit on one side.

    60. I have tried this method. It is not as easy as it looks... :sweat
