Air-hardening clay

Jul 23, 2007

    1. My basic question here is I wonder if it is alright to sand down air hardening clay to make it smoother before painting, or is this type of clay alot more brittle when it comes to that type of treatment than baking clay is.

I'm sorry if this is a repeat thread, I look tried a Search for it but didn't really have much luck. :sweat

      Thanks! :aheartbea

    2. I would contact the manufacturer of the clay in question. Different brands may have different rules.

Are you planning on using the clay for doll mods?

    3. Yes, one of my boys will be getting a nice set of horns as well as new hooved feet that I hope to make for him . I have Super Sculpey too, since I've heard people really like it, but I also purchased some of the air hardening type since I thought a little variety wouldn't hurt.

With that though, I thought maybe the air hardening clay could be better used for other things such as toys and whatnot for the boys, but again, I wasn't sure how well it took to being sanded.

And I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try contacting the manufacturer, I was just a little put off since most of the package is written in Italian ( I think that's what it is ) :sweat

    4. It depends on what it's made of. If it's something like paperclay, then sure, no problem. But other clays don't sand as well, or the dust might be harmful to inhale.

Usually it'll say on the package if it's sandable, though. (Also, if it's Das, that stuff doesn't sand well, in my experience...)

    5. Yes, it is Das :(

Ah well, I knew I was taking a risk when I bought it, and now I know not to make my mods with it and save that for the Super Sculpey. I guess I can just use all my Das for other projects like...uh...well, I'm not really sure since I don't really use clay, but I can put it other good use x3

    6. i use stonnex air dry clay for a lot of things and as long as you know basic rules for sculpting ( a.k.a slip and scoring) then sanding wont be a problem because really you only get brittle parts if you try and add to hardened clay

but for me it sands down pretty smooth :)

    7. Yeah, another thing about Das is that it takes for-freaking-ever to dry x_x Again, this was just my experience, and I was using it for parts on a costume (so much thicker/larger than for doll parts, but still :P). I just didn't like working with it.

I personally love paperclay, but am not sure how well it'd work on BJDs. I have heard of people using Apoxie Sculpt for modding, though (I think).

    8. I used das pronto for sculptures a few years back (normal white type), and I had no problems sanding it down, the surface was very smooth afterwards :sweat I guess it is brittle if it gets very thin, but in my experience, super sculpey is worse.

    9. I used epoxy clay to add on to Hunter's erm manhood, and I had to sand it down afterwords a little, and it was fine. ^^

    10. Question! Has anyone here used La Doll different types of clay? I can't tell the difference from original La Doll, Premix and Premier versions. I mean the clay itself, not the weigh of each pack.

      Thanks! =3

    11. I am also very curious to know anyone's experiences with la doll. I am looking to use it for armor for my doll.

    12. I just bought myself some of the La Doll clay today. I stared at it for a while trying to figure out the same thing. hehe. The La Doll Premier said that it was light weight where as the regular stuff didn't. I guess that means that it dries a lot lighter. It said that it remains strong though and that you can use the two together perfectly fine, so I dont think the difference if probably too noticeable. (also on a side note, the La Doll Premier had a lot less in the package (weight) a they were both the same price... don't know if that means you can make less with it.)

    13. Hi, I'm just beginning work on my first ever OOAK doll and am wondering if anyone has tried to make their own complete doll from air hardening clay? If so, which clays did everone find to work best and/ or worst? The plan is for a fairly large one of a kind bjd so I don't want to waste funds on clay/ equipment which won't work out. Any and all advice greatly welcomed, pm me if you want to. Have a great day everyone :)
