Doll Manicures and Pedicures

Sep 27, 2004

    1. I'd like to do the nails of my DD and my SD (if applicable). However, I'm worried the lacquer will stain. Has anyone tried this? What to do? :?

    2. Everything stains vinyl, I'd stay away from nailpolish on your DD.

      It should be alright for your resin doll, though, as long as you coat the nails first and don't use excessively dark colors. I'm sure I read about nail polish somewhere and people have said it's alright, I think it's just oil based stuff you have to keep away from.

      Hope that helps.

    3. Good to hear, becuase I'm going to want to do Ichiiro's nails with a clear gloss.
      My guess is if you do a clear coat first, and then your colors, it should be okay?

    4. You can also just use Acrylic if that's an option for you...it won't stain as badly, but it will come off easier.

    5. if your doll is coated it wont stain. I had water color pincel stain my SD when she wasn't caoted but it was fine when she was. It's a good precation

    6. Okay I'd like to do Sabrina's nails. Should I grind up chalk and use that, or use paint? I want it sheer and natural, like a real french looks, that is, they do the white first and put the light pink over it, I think if I do it that way, like they do real nails, it won't look too white, which is what I want.

      Does anybody have any suggestions for me or a clever way they've done manicures?

    7. My friend used to giver herself french manicures all the time by using these little stickers you put on the nail before painting the white to make the edge uniform and seamless. I don't know if that will work for a doll, as their nails are so small, but it might help! ^_^

    8. If I was doing it... I'd probably paint the white "tip", and then either use chalk to colour the bottom of the nail, or a clear glaze tinted pink, like acrylic thinned down with acrylic thinner. Then glaze over the top. ^^

      Thinking about it, I'd definitely go with paint over chalk to avoid having to coat the hand with MSC multiple times....

    9. I don't have any MSC at all. So I think I will do that, I'll use paint.... maybe this weekend I'll have a little time to try. :grin: I know I could paint them, say, pink or something, but I wanted to try a french.

    10. I think a french would be fairly easy to do with acrylic. ^^

      And yeah, if you don't have any MSC, I wouldn't try chalk, as it'll rub right off.

      Post pics when you're done, I'd love to see them! ^^

      I'd think the secret to natural looking nails would be similar to doing natural looking lips... mutliple coats of transparant pink with little nail lines. ^^

    11. Hey, why not try white gel pen for the white? It'd be pretty easy, no? Then just paint over it with clear nailpolish. That's what I'm doing with Ichiiro.

    12. Yes I have a white paint pen I was going to use for the tips, then go over with pale pink acrylic paint. I don't know how much I will fuss with trying to make it so realistic, LOL, just neat! I'll post!

    13. Let us know how it comes out?

    14. Pick up a bottle of "floating medium," and use it as directed. It thins down acrylic paint, so you get very sheer coverage. Unlike thinning with water, though, the medium preserves the consistency of the paint, so you don't have to worry about it drying out too quickly, or getting all goopy. : )

    15. Bella what about using "extender"? it's different than floating medium, I have some extender. You know what come to think of it, I will get floating medium... b/c extender just keeps it from drying too quickly as you work, it doesn't thin it at all, and I would like it sheer. OKAY!! thanks for the tip!!

    16. I know azrael's accomplice did a french manicure, but I also successfully finished one on Sunday night and said I'd post photos ~

      In all it took me roughly three hours because I am an insane perfectionist and continued to do it over and over until I got it right. For now, her hands are sealed with MSC gloss because I don't have matte, but I don't care how shiny they are as long as my job doesn't get rubbed off. T_T:;

    17. All my dolls have varying degrees of french manicure. It really is a nice touch, isn't it? :grin:

    18. Aie!!! It's so pretty!! I love it...you did a sensational job...I'm newly inspired to do Lexie's nails now!!

    19. I spent a lot of time looking at the Gallery this morning.

      All the lovely dolls. sigh.

      But unless the light was juuust right, all the detail on their fingers washed right out or otherwise vanished.

      So nails should probably be painted or blushed to look even better.

      But how do people do that?
      help, please.

    20. may i introduce kiras hands to you?
      [IMG]
      this is dollmore dean, customized by his owner
      (yes, i was only the photographer ^.~ )
      she paint his nails with a little mixture of pink and white
      (you can see more examples on our website)

    21. *****n/a*****

    22. i don´t think you have to blush the complete body. it looks good as well without blushing
      but you made a good work. looks interesting. ivy looks like a "mineur de bois"

    23. There are instructions for how to blush/paint Unoa in DollyBird #3 on page 63. Among other things it shows how to paint the hands.

      It looks like you just airbrush the fingertips, and then use a sharp knife to scrape the paint off the tip to make a french manicure, and then you paint over with a gloss varnish. If the fingers are not separated it might be an ide a to put some darker shading between the fingers as well.

      I've got a pic from an Ebay auction that shows this page, the pictures are not in a logical order to a non-Japanese reader, and the text is of course in Japanese, but it does kinda show how its done.

      Email me at twigling @ broadpark . no if you want me to send you this pic.

    24. I haven't done body blushing on my girls, but I have seperated their fingers and toes, and given them light manicures. I wanted to give their fingernails a little bit of definition, so I took the same ground up chalk pastels that I used on their faceups and with a tiny brush I put it on their fingernails and then msc'd their hands again. After that was done I took some clear fingernail polish and painted their nails with that. It turned out quite well, and shows up just enough in photos.

    25. I did a trial fingernail blushing on my boy's extra hand parts since I didn't like them anyway. I used chalk pastels in red and brown for the finger, then MSC-ed it, then ran the tip of the nail along the white chalk pastel to get a nie white tip, then MCS-ed again. I just shaved the chalk pastel with sandpaper to get some dust, and used a paint brush to put it on the nail. It came out with a very natural look to it, pink near the base and fading out as it got to the tip. I didn't blush the rest of his hand, and it looked just fine. I can take a picture if you want.

    26. I am not sure this is the place to ask this or not.

      Has anyone ever pianted their dolls nails?

      My boy wants dark purple, but I am sure not going to do it And I am not sure if it would just look silly.

      Anyone have any pictures?

    27. You should ask for this to be moved to "Customizing/Painting". This forum is for people who are selling handmade items or who are offering their doll customizing services.

    28. I did paint my Kun's nails.. but a color near her skintone, i wanted something to be on her nails, but nothing too bright

      [IMG]

      It's painted with acrylic flesh colour and then a layer of gloss on top... just thought you might be interested :)

      I've seen some people paint really good nails... so if you're afraid of trying, i'm sure someone would be glad to do it for a cheap fee. I don't mind helping, but i'm such a newbie i'm afraid I might ruin them :oops:

      If you are interested however, do PM me :)

    29. Sorry, about the miss placed post.
      I was considering getting my dolls nails done, if it was possible and looked cool. It it does look cool.
      So, if you go by that logic I was trying to commission someone.

    30. I've also seen hands with custom nails sold on Y!J.

      Just an FYI. XD

    31. don't be afraid to paint them yourself. A small enough paintbrush can do wonders and you don't have to invest in expensive acrylics as you can get the crafters variety which are usually inexpensive per bottle. A simple matte or gloss finish can protect your results and if you make a mistake before it is dry you can use water or rubbing alcohol to remove your boo boos.

    32. I pained Ichiiro's nails with a fleshtone nailpolish, and they came out great (if a wee bit girly.)

    33. Hiya

      I have painted my girls nails purple to go with her faceup... I will post pics later, but at work at the moment.. I think it looksgood, used acrylic paint and then 2 coats of gloss.. but ive used nail varnish before on another doll with no problem tho it was a pale pink...

      :daisy

    34. I've painted every female doll hand I have had in pink nailpolish with no troubles!

      You can go the acrylic/gloss varnish route also, if you desire! :D

      The trick is to get a small enough paintbrush to get onto the tiny nail cleanly. Also, if you are using dark colors or intense colors, like red, (of nail polish OR paint) I'd suggest a coating of your favorite doll matte sealer to protect the hands from any stains.

    35. Oh, I would love to see your dolls purple nails. I would like to pain my boys that color. I love purple

    36. Howdy! Yet another question:
      I painted QiXa's nails and I just was NOT happy with the results or quality I got from acrylic paints. I want that shiny-ness and quality I get from real nailpolish, but I dunno if it's ok to use real nailpolish. Will it stain even if I protect it with layers of dullcote? ( I only have dullcote)
      IF it IS safe to use nailpolish, like Sally Hansen, do you reccomend a certain brand? I like the Sally Hansen "tough as nails" polish and I hope that that polish would even help protect my baby's fingers from harm. Thanx!

    37. I use nail polish on my dolls for realism, and the best advice I can give is to get a quality polish and test it on your own nails first. If it yellows your people nails, keep it away from the dolls fingers. Also, I'd avoid intense colors like red or black.

      There was a thread somewhere about nail polish on lips, which brought up certain ingredients in polishes that can yellow or deteriorate resin, but I can't find it right now.

    38. Why don't you add acrylic gloss after you're done painting the nails? It'll add the shininess you want for the doll's nails, and then be safe to take off later. Acrylic gloss isn't that much more expensive than nail polish for a much larger bottle.

    39. I'm curious about this too, because I really want to paint my doll's nails, but I'm afraid to touch her with anything for fear that her fingers will dissolve or something. >_<; Does anyone know how nailpolish interacts/reacts with LUTS resin? Also, is it removable with a Mr. Clean eraser?

      I do have two sets of hands, so I guess I could always experiment on one. But even the idea of having a damaged set of unused hands is kinda... erm. >_<;

      I guess since nailpolish is meant to be removed, it won't stain. But who really knows.

      *jumps into the boat with ranmanekineko* ^_^;

    40. If all else fails everyone can remember that most hand parts are replaceable ^.^ wheras doll heads are... not so much >.<;

      I just use regular nail polish, but the only problem I've ever had with it was it scraping off and getting somewhere else on the resin (thighs or wherever the fingers scraped against) but it easily came off with minor scraping with my nails/soap and water/magical sponge.

      I've used a few diffierent kinds of polish that seem to be quite okay: Sephora brand, OPI, and a few that I've gotten from CVS that are random brands ^.^;

      If you're really worried about staining go with a lighter color (which doesn't generally scrape off or at least show) but it really depends on the brand on whether or not it leaves a mark

      Only way to find out is to try it! ^.^

    41. i used actual real nailpolish on my dolls nails, she was primed with a few layers of MSC first, i chose a bright fuschia, even after being on for a few months and removed it left no stain.

    42. Well, if you feel nervous about real nail polish, you could use something like acrylics or dry pastels to get the color you want, and gloss it over with high gloss acrylic, or enamel. I've done both these methods, looking for the best result, and they both worked out rather well. ESPECIALLY if you want to use colors that are dark, or intense.

    43. i've seen some dollies online with painted nails, and i know a couple of you have have dolls with manicures/ pedicured nails. so my question is this: how do you safely paint your doll's nails and what materials do you use.

    44. All my dolls have painted nails. I use acrylic paint and sealer. It's very easy to remove with acetone if you later change your mind, or want a differnt color.

    45. My dolls have lengthened nails, but they've yet to be blushed or anything ^_^;;

    46. We blushed our dolls' nails with watercolor pencils since we wanted a natural, unpainted look, and sealed it with a layer of acrylic varnish. One layer gives a nice sheen without a "glossy" effect.

    47. I use acrylic paints and sealer. Having the nails done makes a doll look more realistic and "finished", I think.

      Az

    48. I used acrylics and sealer and on her toes I even used a touch of glitter paint.

    49. I use watered down acrylic paint in sheer layers to just paint the nailbed, then seal with satin sealer since it most resembles the nails natural shine. Here's an example of that style:
      [IMG]

    50. Oooo, nice job lyn_r. Those look so natural. I'll keep your technique in mind.

    51. Ok, I'm game how did you lengthen your girls nails. I would love to to that to my girl.

    52. Actually, my boys' nails, and I didn't lengthen the nail, so much as shortened his fingers. I just sanded underneath to make the nails stick out and reshaped the fingers to be slimmer and more feminine. I posted it on DoA, you can see the post here. And I have a thread in the marketplace here if you're intersted in getting it done to any of your dolls *shameless advertising* XD

    53. I saw one of my friends painted her doll's hands like human hands.
      She used pastels after spaying Mr.super clear.
      (She also painted every joints of pingers.. it looks so natual!!)
      And maybe she didn't mention, but I guess she added gloss on nails

    54. I think that it's better to don't try it on BJD...

    55. I think most people don't risk it...

      I use it on my doll's nails, it sets up which I presume it wouldn't if it was melting resin!

      the acetone in it should evaporate away from it to harden, thats why nail varnish melts itself

      I don't see any danger in using it at all,

      but alot of people say don't use it!

      depends how you feel

    56. I lengthened my Ryung's nails. I used Revlon flex to fit acrylic nails, cut them down and then hand filed each one to shape. I then painted them with HUMAN OPI nail lacquer. I had the nails on masking tape (actually painter's tape which is a little less tacky) to paint. I put about 5-6 coats of polish on them as this brand was very translucent. When each nail was removed from the tape, it needed to have the paint flash trimmed with an exacto knife. They were then superglued to the doll's hand. You can see a picture on a thread in this forum called "acrylic nails". This wasn't too hard to do. The only long part was allowing enough time between polish coats.

    57. I used pastels, a coat of testors dullcote, and then lots of coats of testors glosscote.
