Is it possible to kind of... "open" a doll's mouth? I don't want to carve a hole, but leave a bit of resin for teeth. Has anyone done this? I've sculpted a bunch before, so I know I won't mutilate him when/if I get him. I was planning on sanding the upper lip a bit inwards/upwards.. and the bottom lip on the top ... Anyone has any better ideas or pictures?
I was wondering how someone would go about modding some teeth on a doll. Example: I've been wanting to do this for a while but I am too terrified of even touching him with a scalpel and cutting him some buck teefs :B If there is maybe someone here who can mod a doll to look like that or similar to that, could you point me in their direction? Any kind of help would be appreciated! :'D
I just recently did some repairs on my Shiwoo's face with a dremel. I smoothed his eyelids, reshaped one messed up corner of his lip, and completely reshaped his tear ducts. It was very easy and smooth-going, and modding teeth with a dremel wouldn't be much harder, methinks. (: Good luck.
I was actually looking at this a few weeks ago. I think that the teeth are just painted in. That's mostly the situation anyway.
Yeah, I agree. On that Chiwoo it is only painted in between. My sister Morbidollz even painted fangs on her El, Tyriel. Here's a pic. She gave it sortof a 3D-effect. ^_^
Alright, so i tried to mod teeth on my shiwoo by opening his mouth and carving out the resin into teeth, and it looked great, but when i tried to fix him according to a suggestion someone posted, he tured out horrible. Now it really does look like he has buck teeth. As of now ive decided to add on the teeth using an air dry clay, but my question is, should i add on the teeth before of after i give him his faceup?
Do you have any pictures? I modded my Soom Kyries' mouth open, all the way through, and then made her a separate tooth piece. They fit in like eyes with a little putty. Hers are a bit *bucky*, but that's what I was going for. Here's a pic If you want the teeth just on the outside, not from the inside, I would definately mold them first before the face up. That way if you have the sand or shape the teeth after they dry you wont risk hurting the face up. Good luck!
I've seen a few dolls who normally have closed mouth modded to have open mouth with teeth carved in it! That's just totally amazing! From a workshop perspective I'm just curious how you'd go about doing something like that? How would you first plan where and how much of the mouth is to be widened, what tools would you use, how to use the tools and then how the hell do you carve the teeth???? Fascinating...any ideas or discussion? Please contribute
Ah! This is one of the mods I really want to do someday! I'm interested to hear what others say as well. Here's what I'd do if I was going to try this, (please keep in mind I HAVEN'T done it... so I don't know how accurate this will be): - I would sketch a rough idea of how you want your doll's mouth to look on paper, or if you don't feel confident in your drawing skills, look around for pictures of dolls with open mouths that are similar to the results you want. - Then I'd get'choo and x-acto knife and SLOWLY start shaving resin away from the top, bottom, or both lips depending on how you want the mouth to look. - Stop frequently for breathers so you don't stress yourself out ( I need to take my own advice ^^;; ) - Once you've got the mouth carved out a little SMALLER than you'd like, grab yourself some sand paper and start working at smoothing your edges, taking off the rest of the resin you wanted to along the way. Hope that provided some answers! Now I have a question as well: If anyone has suggestions to smoothing out the mouth hole after carving it in I'd LOVE to hear them, I'm worried that when I try this I won't be able to get the mouth as smooth as I'd like it to be because of the difficulty of jamming sandpaper in a tiny resin crack. ^^;;
I would really like to know this as well! That's the problem I've been having with an elf mod I'm doing... I can't seem to get to the inner parts of the ear to smooth out the creases with sandpaper
Ive modded a few dolls like this. I use suppppppper soft sand paper to sand the lips after making room for teeth, sometimes i take 6 hours spread over 3 days sanding. (mainly because the sanding paper is so soft..but it gives finish) So..there are just no quick ways out of smoothing out the mouth sorry. And it takes allota well..twisting your panties to get between those lips XB But the work pays off:
This was done on a Lishe: Okay, so it wasn't that bad because Lishes have a pretty big gap between their lips anyways...>_> but what I did was (pretty close to what inuchick suggested); shaving the lower lip down using an exacto-knife, carving around the upper lip as well to create a wider opening, and finally restructuring the curves about the upper lip and sanding the cut marks for a smoother surface. I just rolled/folded a tiny piece of sandpaper and er...jammed it into the mouth =_= it's not that hard actually. I didn't manage to get a completely perfect surface but pretty close--enough so that painting over it can cover it up pretty well. I didn't sculpt teeth--it was too hard for such a small opening @_@ I just painted some white where the teeth should be when finishing her faceup. If anyone carved teeth where they've opened a closed mouth, I'd love to know how it was done as well!
I used a Cutter Bee (a fancy exacto knife) and thinned the upper lip down. Using the extra resin below to make teeth, then sanded.... he looks like he has an over bite which I did on purpose, I wanted him to look like he needed braces!
I currently have a commission to do this very thing. I think you have to think about how teeth are going to change your doll's personality first. Will the teeth be in an open mouth in ecstasy, or be in a toothy childish mouth? Here is a link to a mouth opening, teeth commission. You can see I tried various approaches and made many adjustments. I'm still tweaking! I advise to think really carefully as teeth are not for every character or persona. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kawaiigrl75/sets/72157604240714123/
I think I will try modding the mouth open and sanding a little bit on my DZ Hid. The shape of his mouth is weird, and I'm very certain that opening it and adding teeth would help. I'll post pics when the mod is done^^
I saw someone do this on YJ and I would really like to know more about this. I saved the pics if anyone wants to see it's on a masha/f16 These are NOT my photos or my doll! they are from yahoo japan, but I wanted to share since I did not know that you could mod a doll to have teeth.
Inspired by this thread and my love for dollie teeth, I added them in when I modded my Yder head to death. I used a dremel, exatco and sandpaper and I'm very happy with how they came out And I'm very amazed that they show up in pictures more often than not. Here's one shot of them from a shoot I did yesterday.
Does anyone have any more current projects with mouth opening? I'd love to see a tutorial if possible ^^
Doing a photo tutorial of the teeth would be hard- because of the angle/closeness of the photos. Written wise here is how I do it though. I'd try to add some drawn pics- but no time for that right now. Honestly I start off with the dremel right away. If you don't have one- use sandpaper for this step. You carefully work the small gap between the lips open. The more 'natural' a gap the doll has the better. Basically you try to work the upper lip up to make room for the teeth. You also work back and up under the upper lip too- this gives the more natural hang over of the lip. You have to be careful and go slow. I sand after I've finished withe my dremel work. The next step is the lines for the teeth- these should not be too bold or obvious. You have to think of it like when you're drawing teeth. If you put a full black line between every tooth it just looks wrong. Like wise you want a subtle line here- an exacto works well and you probably will hardly see a difference- that's alright, paint does wonders. On painting the mouth- the lips are done just like normal. For the teeth I blush over in a grey pink and then paint white on the individual teeth lightly(light is the key). And then I blush over it again to settle in that grove I made with the exacto and it brings out the individual teeth. Again here don't paint the lines in between each teeth- it starts looking really unnatural and creepy really quickly. And there you have teeth!
I agree there isn't much to make a tutorial about. It's all happening in such a tiny spot, it's hard to take decent pictures. I usually cut/scrape out some space between the lips with a scalpel, sand the lips smooth with sanding paper, and then fill part of the gap with white epoxy. It saves me blushing/painting the teeth white while painting the face-up. To sculpt the teeth I use those dentist's hygiene tools, because they are long and thin and can reach the hard places in the mouth. I cut the most from the top lip, but also "behind" the top lip, if that makes sense. That way the top lip goes over the teeth a bit and make it look more natural. Here are some pictures of teeth I've modded. Limhwa dreaming half elf: Open eyed CP Delf Lu-wen (not the vampire head with the fangs): Close up: CD Delf El:
I'm starting to think the new search engine is against me here. I've checked the sticky and pretty much every combination for "open mouth mods" possible and not found what I'm looking for. So now I'm asking you, O Hallowed Customization Board. What's a good way to go about opening a mouth? When I say open, think Unoa Lusis with her parted lips. Or Zaoll Muse without the mouth plate. Closing a mouth, I get, but the opening of one trips me up. Where would I even start? I have a dremel, but I do not have the balls to try it on my baby. And I don't have the best command of knives. (Which I have the scars to prove.) I thought a pin vise could be a viable option, but I'd really like to hear some other opinions. Any tips, tricks links or hints are greatly appreciated!
You want the sticky Customizing thread Index, and then scroll down to Additive Subtractive Mods. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115262 There ya go! If you're not sure of your own abilities yet, you can send your doll to a modder here on the boards and they'll do it for you.
I'm bumping this to the front...I would like to attempt this in the near future and would love anything new to be added to this thread
Not as impressive as some of the previous teeth mods on this thread, but I also opened my DZ-BB July's mouth some and carved teeth in. I have not carved individual teeth yet because he is a very small head and I have the crummiest pulse imaginable. However, he is still a W.I.P. so I might attempt adding definition to the them later when I have time. (: (ignore craptastic face up) Unmodified blank July (DZ's website) - Enzyme ^ ^
Teeth just make dolls look so much more detailed and beautiful, in my opinion. I'm really tempted to add teeth to every single doll I plan to own.
Ok, I totally did it to my Kara Klum!! I bought a practice head to mod first so I didn't ruin him, but I jumped in and did it anyway. I think it turned out good! He definitely has an open mouth now. I had some trouble with the teeth, but I think some more work will pull them out better. For now I'm giving him a quick faceup for a meet tomorrow...hopefully I will get some pictures then (it'll probably be too dark tonight). I'm so excited about him, he can hold a cigarette in his mouth now XD I should try to add some fangs....
SHOW PICS! I'd LOVE to see a step-by-step of the process in pics as to how to do it. It would be cool if Tatsuha could hold a cigarette in his mouth. Ryu
I don't have any step-by-steps...I didn't take any photos and it's kind of hard explain...I didn't really have steps so much as jump in with some tools, poke, scrape and hope for the best. Here he is finished (for now) It's hard to tell it's even open with a faceup...for anyone but me who knows what he should look like. I keep thinking about how I could have done it better, but I really didn't want to loose more of his mouth than necessary, so really this is pretty good. And again, he smokes, so now he can! lol Priorities..... I couldn't get the "teeth" to show...I really think I need to add now, as opposed to subtract.
I'm working on a Dollmore Malli right now, adding teeth. I carved her upper lips, so her mouth is at a small angle part, like this: < Next, I just took... uh, I dunno, it's just some white clay I guess. And I stuck it in the part, and shaped it and stuff, and then when it dried, I took it out, then I did her faceup, then I put the teeth part in, then I 'glued' it in her mouth with gloss :]
Bumping this up again, for more mouth mods. I may be attempting this again....only better. hopefully.
Thanks for all the advice on this thread! I love dolls with teeth, and I hope to carve/add some if I get a DIM Laia for example.
I've done some mouth mods, especially I like to add teeth. :3 These ones I've done using only a scalpel. This one's on a very small doll, Saintbloom Chartlotte Fairyland Marcia Dreaming Volks School A
These are great! I just finished adding teeth in to the doll who's mouth I'd opened *points up*. I think it looks pretty good already, though I want to touch them up a tad after the epoxy dries. I literally just finished, so it won't be until tomorrow XD No fangs. I don't think I opened it enough. However....I plan on getting another one, and doing a more drastic opening so I can get fangs in there. Has anyone done a mouth opening that would require completely resculpting the mouth or even the jaw? Or removing part of the jaw\chin and adding it back?? I have a practice head I want to attempt this on....but so far my biggest additive mod is the teeth I just poked into his mouth, XD So we'll see if I can do a more involved one....
Just a pic update. Teeth before they dried and I fixed them up... and finished! Ish. They need to be repainted. I thinned my white out too much and they still look grey :P This is why I need more light in my apt. After I repaint them, maybe I can get better pictures^^'
Not yet! I was going too for this one, but there wasn't room. On the next one I do plan on sculpting fangs....so if I ever get brave enough to start sawing heads in half, I'll post some photos (really I just don't have any milliput XD as soon as I find some I'll be attempting this on a practice head I have...).
OOH! I can't wait to see that! but why saw the head in half? Why not carve them out of the lower lips? Ryu
Can't wait to see, Vampireangel! I'm a huge fan of doll teeth! Thought maybe I'd show my boy here: His mouth was opened slightly as well as carved into that smirk, then I put the teeth in with apoxie. Clearly this is not a standard toothy look for dolls but he needed a big goofy toothy grin. I included the unpainted mod, too.
I don't want to lose any more of the lips than I have too, and I really want the mouth open, not just lips parted. In order to do that the jaw and chin would have to be lowered. I had been kicking this idea around for years but not sure if I should try to sculpt it down more, or cut and reattach, and then I found someone who did it the cut and reattach way, but now I'm not sure where it was and I can't find it >.< I'm pretty intimidated by the thought of sculpting a mouth with teeth and tongue (since so far these sad teeth are all I've modded), but I figure if I can't do it, at least I'll know before I wreck one of my Karas. I have a Uri Rich head I'd bought damaged a couple years ago....he's going to be my test subject, which is great because he's made the same way and out of the same materials >:-D Oh my god that's so amazing! I love it!! You did a fantastic job, he looks great!
^ You're probably thinking of this mod (unless someone else has a cut a head apart since and I missed it): http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...ommercial-(Shiwoo-O!-Face-intense-mod)(nudity), you might be able to find some in-progress photos of the mod here if you look back far enough.
Thats it!! *dance* That's not how I want my head to look (I'm thinking more of a devious smile or "I'm going to bite" look) but that's the process I want to use....because the less actual sculpting I have to the better. Thank you, you're seriously my new favorite person
One more bump to add this amazing mod by glyndon. I'm not thrilled with mine, I might try the tooth part route. I love teeth parts anyway. Also, the weather is supposed to be crap this weekend, so it might be time to start sawing heads in half...
Not exactly an open mouth, but I did add teeth to my Ringdoll K head. This is what he looks like pre-mods (I actually bought an extra head for the mod) He has an overbite, so I carved his mouth out and tried to make it look like he was biting his lip With teeth mod I like it much better than my first attempt at teeth, which I still want to do over.
