Preventing Staining from Clothes, Removing a Clothing Stain from Resin

Apr 2, 2005

    1. OK, here's the deal: My boy mostly has dark-colored clothing .. he doesn't have anything really light-colored except for one white t-shirt. And well, we all know the coolest boy clothing is in dark colors, right? Right.

      Anyway ..

I've noticed that he gets light dark smudges on his chest, ankles, and elbows. Is this normal? He is supposedly coated and I thought coated resin was supposed to not stain as much? If it matters, yes, he gets handled a lot - I'm a very hands-on Mommy ^^ Oh, and none of his clothing is lined either.

So, you experienced BJD owners, what would you advise me to do?

Someone suggested that I line his clothing with fabric tape - pretty crafty, eh? Anybody out there tried that?

Thank you in advance for helping my newbie-self :sorry

ps somewhat related to my above question - Do you think socks are important? I try not to have my boy wear his shoes/boots (again, all dark colors) for too prolonged periods of time. If socks are necessary, where can I get SD13-sized ones?

    2. fabric tape might sort out the stain thing, but will really affect the drape of garments. You could try using white tights underneath trousers and a white long sleeved tight top. Kind of like thermal underwear really, they'd add a little more bulk but provide a layer between anything that could stain and your precioussss and you won't have the drama of trying to alter clothing you already have.

    3. I think a light soak should do the trick.

    4. Dark clothing can stain BJD, unfortunately. I'm not sure about the removal of stains, I think you'd use the same stuff you use to remove face paint.

To avoid staining from clothing, I give my doll's dark colored clothes a vinegar soak:

Soak clothing for several hours in a mix of 1/2 water, 1/2 white vinegar, then rinse thoroughly a few times with cold water.

This should help prevent a lot of staining, anyway. :) Hope this helps!

As for the socks . . . no idea, lol. You could try tube socks from dollsupply.com if you want very basic ones to protect the feet/ankles from staining.

    5. The Mr. Clean magic eraser gets stains out really well. As for preventing staining, all I can say is to soak all your dark clothes in water for a while~

Oh, and I think Domuya has SD13 sized socks. ^^

    6. *hot* water, I washed some velet in cold water and it didnt work.

and WASH EVERYTHINg. Byhand is usually the best. Xavier got stained today by his tuxedo... I got it mostly off with nail polish remover, but it got me paranoid. It's just best to wash everything and keep some Mr clean sponges on hand..

    7. The BJD Cleaner sponge +spray from Volks works really well when V-jeans leave stains, it comes out really easily

    8. I've been really careful not to keep my boy dressed in the same clothing for more then a few days at a time to avoid staining and my own bordem...
But those are some great ideas to prevent troubles.
      Thanks for the tips!

    9. Wow, I knew you guys wouldn't let me down - thank you for all your ideas!

Ok, I've got another question - is it safe for me to soak/handwash a pair of pleather pants? They are really awesome, so I don't want to end up ruining them..

    10. If you are in doubt about a fabric don't do it!

I always wash my fabrics before I cut out a garment and if the fabric bleeds I ditch it and find something else. I'm just not prepared to take the risk, plus I sew to sell and I want my customers to be sure their garments are going to be washable and not run. I've found a few fabrics that washing has done nasty things to so I really suggest if you already have something that you love and it is staining, but you are unsure about washing that you go for the tights underneath trousers instead. You can pick them up at most online doll stores and under rousers they look just like socks so no big deal.

    11. "And well, we all know the coolest boy clothing is in dark colors, right? Right." (quote doesnt work..... )

'course!!!!!!!!!!! Black is the best color! Its so sad that its the one that stains....

I am REALLY sure I heard of this before in the Mini section. So i would advise you to check the search and see if it comes up. (you might get some more info on the situation) I think they even have pics. If i remember correctly you have to wash the clothes ALOT cause theres alot of excess dye on the clothes. (they have pics of that too) And i think lining the clothes with a lighter color that isnt dyed might help. But im new to sewing so i would check with the veterens of clothing before doing that. I think theres also pointers on how to clean that stain off. though im not completely sure.

      I hope this helps.

    12. I used some dish soap and a nice clean sponge , it did the trick with my jeans stains without removing the blushing on my doll...

    13. It's just good policy to wash any dark or strongly colored fabric before wearing. If you've evr bought an itemm of clothing for yourself and it has the instructions of "wash before wearing," it's for the same reason--there are excess dyes. I always handwash all my doll clothes, and I do it pretty regularly, just to keep them clean. I also think that it's the natural fabrics (cottons, silks, wools, and their blends) that bleed, since created fabrics generally cannot be dyed, so that is something to keep in mind for buying fabrics. I still wash everything though, just to be sure.

    14. The Mr. Clean earser will take out most superficial stains really well. It's also great for just regular cleaning.

Soaking clothing or fabric is a standby for me. When I do commissions for dark items I soak the fabric overnight in oxiclean in HOT water in my washing machine. If there is quite a bit of dye leeching, I will do it several times to get rid of all the excess before I make the commission item. Ditto, on any dark clothes I buy.

I am a real believer in socks. There is no way you can get the dye out of leather shoes and it will stain, so socks are your best defense.

When we do your commission clothes Nicky, I cn make you several pairs of white socks wihich will protect Nero's feet and ankles from the shoe staining.

    15. My experience (which has been largely with "matt" vinyl dolls like Gene) is that often it's the thread holding these garments together that stains. Vinegar soak has definitely helped. In the end it's probably same difference, thread or fabric, but I wonder if using higher-quality thread can help prevent some of the staining. Anyone else have experience with this or problems with black thread?

      GJ

    16. I now keep these by me
I just had a terrible experience with one of my tiny Elf dolls and staining
her lower half was dark blue
I used a product called Formula 9-11, its from TWIN PINES
      wwwtwinpines.com

      its non-toxic and biodegradable ,
BRILLIENT , I just wipped her over with a sponge with this on and the stain just came off

The worse staining I ever had was on a Dolfie Dream ...it was ruined , nothing would get it off , including acitone , again from TWIN PINES , I bought REMOVE ZIT
I had to cover the staining which was the whole of her body and hands and leave it a week , the re-apply it ...2 weeks later the Dream body was AS new , amazing results , I have used these products to restore 70s dolls with great results

    17. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works wonders on Nero's resin. I have used it several times now and have had no problems. He is now good as new!

That is so good to hear about your presoak - sounds very thorough! I am now soaking some of his dark clothing in the water/vinegar solution mentioned here - here's hoping for the best!

As for the socks, I will definitely take you up on your offer! Please check your email.

    18. Luke had a pair of jeans that even after I washed and soaked them in hot water, were still staining him. I too the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to him and they were gone in a second, and I got the joy of telling everony online that I couldn't talk to them because I was busy buffing my boy's butt.

As for socks, I loves them. I guess they're not necessary, but I just like the way they look.

    19. REMOVE ZIT is a wonderful thing. Doll restorers use it a LOT to remove stains from vinyl dolls. It's good to know it'll work on resin too!

    20. OK, So I was undressing Paris (my DoD Too) today and I noticed that on his inner thigh there was this black mark; his pants are black, and so I'm assuming this is what everyone is talking about when they say stained resin. I wasn't too worried, I just wiped it off with some acetone right away, no big deal, but I wondering two things:
      1) If it actually IS/(was) a resin "stain":
      and
      2) If one doesn't wipe it off right away, will it stay forever?

    21. If worst comes to the worst you could always sand it off. But in general it's best to avoid stains in the first place by prewashing dark-coloured clothing before putting it on your doll, and don't leave dark clothes on for more than a day or two.

    22. You live in the US, so go find a Mr. Clean cleaning sponge. They're the same as the volks cleaning sponges, I swear by them. Don't use them on face ups or anything that's shaded, it will even take it off! *_*

You'd be so surprised how dirty bodies get from handling, even if you wash your hands like I do before handling them. And I wouldn't worry too much. It depends on the stain, if it's clothes related, then it may over time, but if you switch clothes often it shouldn't matter. If it's dirt, then it should be fine, but marker and stuff, then be careful, but I've even gotten off sharpie, it's not too big of a deal.

Don't let a few stains keep you from playing. :3 They're not too big of deals.

Oh, rinse off the acetone after you use it, because it hasn't been proven, but it's so strong that it may hurt it over time. :chibi Cheers!

    23. Pardon moi for slipping in here ^^ What do you mean by "rinse off the acetone"? Is there acetone in the sponge? (I use the Volks sponge) If you don't rinse (using another non-cleaning sponge I'm assuming, or something similar) it'll wear away the resin? Wear away any coating the doll has?

I was wondering about this before. If I use the cleaning sponge, does it not only wipe away the stain, but the coating as well?

Thanks for any help you can offer :)

    24. Hiya

I think that Mortimer ment make sure you wash the area that had been wiped with acetone to get original mark of.. not that acetone in sponge..

I use the sponge and im sure there is no acetone in it... has never removed my nail varnish or anything...

      so dont panic *hugs*

      :daisy

    25. Try using soap and water, Mr. Clean Sponge or Volks cleaning sponge before using acetone. Save the acetone as a last resort.

    26. Does anyone know what materials can stain your boy or girl?

    27. anything with oils in it...um..some dark colours on clothing and such...acrylics, if you paint without a base coat sometimes...

    28. SHARPIE MARKERS :o

    29. black boots!

    30. Oh no! I guess this happened to one of yours? I swear by MrClean magic sponges for clothing stains. It works miracles!

    31. I tried that. :( My DD2 body was stained by black boots. It wasn't *that* surprising, since they tend to stain if you look at them funny. :| But it was still painful! I'm going to have to use Oxy on her, I think. Or just keep hoping it'll fade on its own. *ah, the optimistic lazy person!*

    32. hm... would making them stockigns out of old hose prevent that?

    33. I got my first doll today and was really excited to dress her up and everything.

A few minutes ago, I took off the jeans I had dressed her in earler so I could change her clothes.

All around her knee joins and all around where her legs are joined to her hips especially, has turned blue.

      I have to idea what to do! And no idea where this thread should be >>;

Water didn't work to get it off, it's really not budgeing.

How do I get the blue to go away, and how the heck did the jeans turn her blue but nothing else made her change colour?

I'm really worried. It's really noticable and she'd so new and everything!

      Please don't tell me I have to sand her or anything liek that >>;

This is my first doll, I don't know a lot about resin.

She's a DoD, so the pale skin makes the blue show up ALOT. =( How do I fix this?

( I may be over reacting, but I've waited so long for my dollie and I don't want to have ruined her skin on the first day >>;... plus it is SO late )

      -------------------------
Most of it's off now ^^ Just a little around the joins left...

    34. Calm down. (^_^) It's a stain from the jean dye, when you recieve clothing it's always in good judgement to rinse it off to make sure there's no excess dye released.

A Volks cleaning sponge or Mister Clean sponge are really good for cleaning things up on dolls. They're magical I swear. (O_O)

Try to get some dishsoap and warm water washcloth and start trying to wipe it off. Also, check all other clothing for dye release. I'll go do a search to see if I can find anything that might help. (^_^) Congrats on your first doll!

      Edit:

Okay. You could try some non-colored acetone to get it off. Don't use the stuff that has color in it, and don't go over 90%.

When making sure that clothes have no excess dye, put some warm water in a white bowl (white so you can clearly see any dye that comes off) and swish it around. If the water is not clear, there's dye on it and you need to get the dye off before you let them wear it or wear it for long periods. To wash doll clothes I just use a little normal laundry soap and hand wash them. In the final rinse let it set in cold water for a while, to let it set.

Some people like vinegar rinses, others don't think they work. It just depends I guess.

    35. (Yes, I must sound tcrazy XD I haven't slept in a while ^^; )

      I tried soup and water, but it wouldn't go ;.;

I shall try dish soap now.

I'm so afraid I might damage her XD Are ALL new owners like me? lol

Searching was not good o_o If I was specific, it came up with stuff like 'pictures of you and your dolls' and threads like that o_O If I wasn't specific, tons of threads came up!

Thanks ^^ 'll tell you if it worked in a minute ^_^

    36. Mr. Clean Super Eraser, they are cheap, and can be found at wal-marts, targets, and grocery stores, they are located in the cleaner section.

Pre-wash the jeans before putting them on her again, pre-wash anything dark to avoid anymore staining.

    37. Awww! (^__^) It's perfectly normal to worry about your Dear, especially your first. (^_^) We'll keep trying until we get it. :3

The search option can be a biatch sometimes. x3 I got most of my results by "stain dye"

Tell us how the dishsoap thingy works. (^_^)

Another edit. x3 This looks like it would be really good! It's from an older thread.

    38. Well, after really intensive, really soupy scrubbing and the worst head ake ever, I think most of the dye is off ^^; Still some staining inside the joints and the stwing inside has gone blue >.<;;;

Most of the damage went after about twenty minutes of it (it was really tough!) and now there's just a very light tiny arounf the joins.

I will look into these things ^^ I think they sell the magic erasers at a warehouse near here, I'll send my Dad when he comes back from Scottland.

This twin pine thing looks good ^^ I'll look into that too.

      I think she'll just sleep nackie for tonight >_>;;;

      Need sleep!

      Thanks ^_^

    39. Don't worry. I was like that to. When Clover first had to be washed so I could do his faceup I was so paranoid my mom was wondering if I was ok. XD

:daisy As for the search engine sometimes it helps to try and think like the search engine... Think about how it does it's searches and go from there. Does that make sense? *_* .... *can't really think of another way to say it*

    40. if you go into woolworths they sell a HUGE block of JML magic eraser sponge! works a treat and only £3.99 for a massive block =)

    41. glad u got some of the blue thing off = )

      btw... do the clothes REALLY has to be wash before wearing it on the dolls? O.O.....EVERYTIME u want to wear the clothes on ur doll? O.O;;
I will get a heart attack if that happens to me too!! X____X

is normal getting nervous about stuff like that........im faaar awaaaay for able to buy a doll and im already thinking lots of stuff like what if she falls?, is it safe to put her in my room?(my room is a really hot place x_x), and more blablablaaaaaaa!
I will be like crying already if I do something wrong to my poor doll T_T

      imagine --> *open the box.....preeettyyyy!! = D......one hour later......BUUAAAAAA!!!! :cry: *

take good care of ur girl and boy ^ ^
and congratulations for having them in ur home! = D

    42. If you washed her while assembled and water got on the string, you may want to take her apart and let her dry. The string can rot and break if left wet and in an enclosed enviroment like it is.

No, just the first time to get the excess dye out.

    43. I didn't dare take her appart. She really neds to be restrung, she's really too tight, but I'm too afraid to do it ^^; I might not be able to and I don't know anyone else who could.

Anyway, I managed to get most of the blue off the strings with a bit of water then I dried them with a towl and pulled back to joint to allow the air to get to it and for it to dry some more.

      I think she's okay now, I can't see anymore blue ^^

I washed her jeans too and she's wearing them again. ^^

Thanks for all your help everyone ^^ I will be getting a sponge block and some form of cleaner like that twin pines one eventually to fix this i it happens again ^_^ *huggles all*

    44. I just got my Soo Dark Elf in BW. I have been shopping around for clothes. I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with dark clothes staining the resin.
From what I understand, Luts doesn't put any sort of sealer on their bodies from the factory and I was a little worried. I have had trouble with this on some fashion dolls before. Thanks!

    45. I got some dark blue jeans for my Soulkid Harang and it's slightly stained, but I don't think it's not removable, I just haven't had the chance to clean it.

    46. My El got stained from his Dark Jedi outfit. He's normal skin.

    47. Good rule o' thumb:

If its natural fibers (cotton, mohair, wool, linen, silk, anything dyed...) wash it first.

Synthetics shouldn't stain, even if they are dark because the dye is part of the fabric (which is why when you bleach a cotton shirt, sometimes the stiching won't bleach).

I haven't had any permenent stains yet, but fabric will bleed on them.

    48. A search will turn up a lot of responses on this, it's a pretty common problem.

Always try to soak well and rinse well new clothes and wigs (dark ones at least) It's time consuming but worth it. I change my Dear's clothes a lot, so I am able to check their bodies often for staining.

    49. Like everyone has said, natural fibers are more prone to leave stains, while synthetics typically don't. But if you do get a bit of dye rub-off, get a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, and a tiny bit of water. With a few swipes of that eraser the stain will be gone.

    50. Yes, but I've never had any problems getting the stains off. I usually use oxyclean wipes--they work great for fabric stain removal.

    51. i hand wash and soak any black clothes with warm water and laundry detergent. and then soak them in vinegar.

if it is something i'm sewing, i will prewash the fabric and soak it in the washing machine a few times. just to be careful. my doll has such beautiful blushing i would hate to have to send her away again so soon (i'm sure eventually i might have to though)

    52. yes, certain clothes do stain. generally its a good idea to either treat a dark outfit if you can so that it doesnt stain anymore, or just check your doll periodically to make sure the outfit isn't staining them. this also goes for wigs.

Outfits like SDC arashi's has been none to stain and several of the outfits on Volks site for limiteds or other dolls, they actually say on the site "color may travel".

    53. Most dolls do not come with the body coated. Just the face if you order a faceup. But you can coat it yourself pretty easily. But personally I found that when I coated my boy he actually attracted dirt. The coating got dirty constantly and made him look filthy. I will never coat him (other than his face) again!
But I have certainly had clothes stain. I had a black shirt that stained his shoulders so bad I had to finally take him apart and really scrub his shoulder joints with a Mr.Clean sponge. But it did remove it. I washed the shirt and haven't had it happen again.

    54. Anyone know how to get excess stain out of Leather? o.o

I pre-wash all dark natural fabrics before putting them to use on the dolls and use thrift store jeans to make jeans out of(they're already soft and really well washed of stain!). The biggest stain culprits seem to be scarlette and black.

    55. just a question about the Volks Super Dollfie dolls and staining.....
are there certain colors that stain easier than others? what can i do to prevent dolls from staining from the outfits i make for them?

      any suggestions?

      jordan-Mykal

    56. I've read somewhere here in DoA that you could pre wash the clothes to remove the excess dye from the fabric..or put a white cloth lining beneath the outfit..^^

    57. well i know that patent leathers aren't too bad about staining....but what about Lycra Velvets? they are heavy, but i am unsure if they are prone to staining.....lol
i mean obviously color is a factor in the staining....i just want to make sure that i do not end up ruining my sweet Viktorya before i get to enjoy her! LOL
I tend to use alot of black and red, because this is my style and colors i love....but i have started taking a peek at whites....which i'm sure don't stain at all LOL

      Jordan-Mykal

    58. ohh..yeah..i know velvet cloth do bleed at times..X.X hmm..just to be sure, try lining them with a light colored cloth to protect your dollie's skin from direct staining..^_^

PS : I love the colors Red and black too.. a great combination! ^.^

    59. I can tell you that denim stains--that's what I've had the most trouble with, though the stains have always washed off.

    60. are stains very easily removed? (I mean should i accidentally use something that ENDS up staining?
