Okay, so here's the deal: My Soony, Emma, had started getting really floppy. She wouldn't hold any poses, she couldn't sit up straight or stand. So I thought about restringing, and then someone in a Yahoo group I joined said maybe the stringing just needs a little tightening and I was like, "why didn't I think of that?!" So I did just that and I'm happy I did because now she can hold poses, the only problem I have with her now is she has a bit of a kicky leg problem, but she can still stand. (Kinda OT, but she looks kinda happy now. ) The thing is, I'm worried. What if her stringing is too tight? I think I remember reading on doa somewhere that the stringing on their doll was so tight, they got a crack in the neck or one the joints. Can't remember what thread it was, but I vaugely remember it. Could her stringing be too tight and cause damage to her? And how do I know if the stringing is too tight or or if the stringing is ok?
I'd think the elastic or the hooks would go before the resin did, but I can't claim to be an expert. If you're worried, loosen it slightly ^^ But I'm sure the wonderful folk here will have the knowhow. Something like that happened on my Melinda (Ami girl) actually.. she's strung really tightly and her left foot's shook came loose, sent her foot flying across my desk. I got her fixed, but now her ankle joint seems partly out or something (I swear her left leg now seems longer ).
Yeah, probably. I'm going to eventually restring her all together, since the elastic cord seems to be getting stretched out, but I just tightened her for now until I can find the elastic. Gosh, I hope her foot or something dosn't go flying across the room before then!
I think the delf joints are pretty sturdy... most of the damage problems I've heard of are ones with very different foot joints from the delf ankle knob thing. As for her kicky legs... search the forum for info on hot glue sueding... it's the easiest and cheapest way to reduce kick.
Ahhh. . . what a relief! *phew!* She does have sueding that the previous owner applied to her knee joints, but i think it may have worn down a little. Maybe I should try and remove the old pliver and apply new pliver. . .
I am a little worried about this too. My Volks MSD's knees look like that have a little bit of wear on the locking part of the lower leg. He has to be as tight as he is in order to stand on his own and pose, but I guess I have to be a little more careful when I'm bending and straightening his knees. I take heart in that Volks MSDs are notorious for being very sturdy little fellows.
I want restring again my doll... because I think is too tight? But I don't know I read somewhere here that there's no need to not pull too much the hooks... what they meant ? I dont know, but since I have trouble to start with head, (I have a blue fairy) I could start from foots? I find this tutorial: It seems more easy starts with foots, what do you think? http://rapture.sephdraven.com/misc/unstrung.html Bump because I have an important question: Have you ever try to pick the hook and try to rotate? I though that the hooks inside hands, foots, and head was fix but... I try to move and I notice that it can rotate! Of course I don't try to continue to rotate, I just do a little moviment.. and I notice that it can move... at first I though that was just from one hand and I was TERRIFIED , then I immediatly try to touch the other hooks and are all in this way... Now I wonder.. is normal, or is just my doll? Please, let me know Im scary the hooks could take away from my doll!! Helppp :°°(((
I thought my Roku (dod doc too) was too tight and i just unstrung him. I found his left food was damaged to see his left foot was damaged inside where the resin bar is. it may have been a bubble but it looks worn & scratched alittle, the bootom up the bar's grove is also slightly scratched. as i'm typing this a friend has sujested it was a manufactoring fault (as a bubble may have got in the resn and made a fair dip) any advice?
Oh this is so timely, today I found out that my DOC Bee-A's foot broke because it was so tightly strung, when they are shipped together with my DOC Too I'm already bothered by this, but I was scared of restringing without any assistance but it was terrible, I think I need a new pair of feet for her *bummer* or maybe I'll just whip out something else
the same thing happen to my doll at first he was too loose hardly stand or sit than i restrung him a bit tighter n he end up chipped on his shoulder .. YAY!
There's a surgical dressing that comes in strips. It doesn't have the thick healing pad or anything - just a woven cloth with a sticky side. I use this in joints that I'm worried about wearing. Don't think it would prevent chipping or anything drastic like that.
My luts SSDF came strung so tight he was always curled in a ball. When I unstrung him I found that the s-hooks in his hands were nearly bent out. :c
I personally like to string my dolls tighter than I probably should and I must say that as long as your s hooks arn't bending and the resin isn't getting dented you're probably fine? As dolls tend to loosen up after play anyway? Some dolls need to be strung tighter to pose well (Iplehouse YID boy body). I think it just takes different tensions and elastics to figure out what is the safest and most effective stringing method for your doll. Ultimately, as long as you're not "fighting" for a SUPER tight tension you probably haven't got her too tight. ^^; I hope that helps?
well i can tell you tight stringing can defiantly do damage! i bought a delf girl body second hand with a fractured neck because she was WAY tooo tight, the damage will vary depending on the stringing system and so on... but basically see how easy it is to pull out extra elastic if you can get an inch or two you should be ok!
I just restrung my soony... She still has a kicky leg problem. Getting her to stand, even with hot glue sueding has been impossible Good luck with your girl.
Gahh! I'm worried about my CD Mikhail. He was loose when he came, his thigh joint would pop out and hang out of the socket by will. My sister and I restrung him, but the elastic barely stretched. I want to see if his foot is okay, but I can't pull his foot to see, it's hard to budge! Though his hands and arms are fine!
If your finding it really hard to pull the foot from the joint, it's proberbly to tight, IMO. Personally, I find that enough leeway to allow for hands/feet to be taken on or off with relative ease, but still tight enough that the individual parts don't fall loose from the joints when you pick the doll up seems to be a nice medium. If you can't get that with the elastic provided there's lots of places that sell it, I'd imagen someone with more knowledge of your country/areas doll outlets can help more with that.
I checked him over and his tension has loosened MUCH MUCH more now! Phew! I can pull at his strings again, I think he's safe! Thanks!
I was a little nervous about this myself... my AE Coral came strung REALLY tight. It was hard for me to actually pull the S hook up enough to get her head on, and she is super kicky. When the S hook was sitting in her neck, I noticed it was digging into the resin a little. I may get her a neck "donut" and see if that helps. I considered re-stringing her, but the company didn't leave any slack at all with the elastic, so I'll have to purchase some more before then. When the hook is sitting in her head, though, I don't notice any problem. I think I just need to make sure there's a buffer between her neck and the S-hook when I take her head off, or remove the hook altogether and secure the elastic with a chopstick or something. I'm hoping as I play with her more that she'll loosen up.
When I first received Sorcha she was strung too tightly. Shipping damaged her pretty badly I don't think it was the stringing itself that did this to her so much as it was the mishandling afterward though. So if you think your doll is strung too tightly, be very careful.
I ended up putting Silicone disks in my soony joints. I had to string her just a bit looser than id like to.
It's always a bit tricky to find the "right way" to string. And of course different kinds of resin can also damage different. A few years ago I bought a Fdoll girl 2nd hand that had her arms strung too tight. It has a fissure at the wrist because of this, but it's minimal. But recently I got a Notdoll girl from the MP. When I saw her legs in real, I was really astonished. This doll was so extremly tight strung by her previous owner, that even the legs are bended. I have never seen something like this before... In the middle you can see one of my other Notdoll bodies and on the outside the left and the right leg of the new girl. Both legs are bended, but the one on the left more But good news for me, I used the "hot boil method" and the legs are straight again now. It was a great experience to see how the leg streches itself only by holding it into the hot water. I'm happy that it worked out. Resin is a great materal! But be aware, extreme tight stringing is not a solution. No one wants legs like that!
Wow, that's some pretty intense stuff. Alot of it must depend on the company's resin though, my demon garden and dollzone boys (esp the dollzone, jeeze. I thought my fingers would break when I restrung him) are incredibly tight but Ive seen no damage. My supia girls too. I have seen chipping on my DoD from loose stringing though, since his parts hit eachother in ways they aren't supposed to. I can hardly believe the bowed legs o.o' what a shock that would be.
I just got a new doll and I was going to use the body for my floating head... but the doll was strung so tight, the S hook in the head pulled my finger down the hole when I tried to remove the head! It really hurt! I managed to get the proper head on the body, but he was so tight I could barely shift his head D: I was scared of what damage that might do trying to loosen the string naturally (playing/pulling the joints over time), so I ended up pulling his feet out and looping some string between the S hook and his foot (after failing to do the same with with the S hook in the neck, the tension is just too strong to work with). Sigh, so far the extra string has worked, and I'm not scared for my dolly's life anymore (or my fingers!)
