Human Eyelashes?

Dec 9, 2006

    1. I was wondering, I've heard that human lashes can often be used for dolls if trimmed to the correct size, and I have found some awesome styles online...

But don't human lashes come with adhesive already on the lashes? Would they be safe to use in this way, with the adhesive still on them?

I've also heard for doll lashes you are supposed to use Aileene's tacky glue to apply it. Is this correct?

Human lashes are a ton cheaper than doll lashes on doll stores and stuff, you can get good free shipping deals, and they have many more varieties and colors and such, so I think that overall it'd be a better choice to use human ones.

    2. I have used them and so does my friend who customizes on a regular basis.
The adhesive doesn't matter much because you will be putting tacky glue on that part anyway. You just have to trim them and position them correctly and you are good to go! I really like using them because they tend to look very full and beautiful. ^_^

    3. You can also buy the individual human eyelash chunks (only like 4 hairs in one bit) and stick them on your doll. They don't come with glue on them, you can just put them on your doll the length you like and then trim the excess that's inside the head. that way if you want the outer parts to be longer, or thicker, you can have them however you want ^_^

    4. I use human lashes just because they're cheap and easy to find. My local costume shop has a gajillion different colors and thicknesses/lengths (much more than the beauty supply stores) so I'm lucky :).

    5. I've used human eyelashes in all my dolls but one. The ones I've used do come with a slight adhesive already on them, but that is mainly just designed to keep them in place in the packaging. It's easily removed by sort of 'tapping' the sticky part of the eyelash on the plastic it comes on...you may need to rub it a little bit too, but not so much that it disrupts the lashes. ^^; It would probably be okay to just leave the adhesive there, though, since I doubt it's anything dangerous, and use additional tacky/white glue to stick it to the doll's head.

    6. I use human lashes in my dolls! I swear by them! They're so convienient and easy to get! I like the full and glamourous styles I can give my dolls with them.

Let me give you a hint though: If you get impatient like me, try Aileene's quick dry tacky glue! It's in a silver bottle.

    7. If you're careful, you can remove the glue that comes on them. Hold the entire strip of lashes BY the lashes in your forefinger an thumb, then gently pull/rub the adhesive off with the other hand.

Its a little time consuming, but its worth the trouble.

Most doll lashes have that adhesive, too. It holds them onto the display cards.

      • x 1
    8. I use the human lashes too, They work quite well. Though I never removed the glue it has on it. Didn't know it could come off.

    9. Its kind of gooey and gross but it'll come off with a little work.

I've used both human and doll lashes, and they're honestly about the same size.

I've never used the kind of doll lash sets that come with lower lashes, though.

    10. Human lashes are the only kind I use anymore because frankly, most of the time doll lashes are not the greatest looking...most of them are so chopped looking at the ends but the human ones always look great.I just set them further back into the head so about half of the lash is glued to the inside of the eyewall.I bought one of the double lash sets at Luts for Dehzi and never used them...not until I lost one of her top lashes though.I just put the lower lashes on top and cut my remaining upper lash in half and set them into the far edge of her eyesocket.Double sets can be pretty handy sometimes.

    11. I used to do that aoyuki_kitsune, but I found the lashes pointed down to much. What I did with Jinelle's lashes was run my beed of glue along the under side of the eye lid, and let the lashes set. Leaving the part on the inside of the head not attached. Once the glue dried I carefully cut off the excess on the inside. Leaving the glued on lashes . it looks much nicer. But is a little more work, but it looks better in the end.

    12. EGLpirate only uses human lashes on her dolls and mine, neither one of us has ever had a problem. Also, she uses white glue to apply them.

    13. I always let my white glue set up really well before I glue them up on the inside so Ive never had that problem.I re-faceup my girl fairly often so it would be easier to remove them if they are still whole.

    14. I've only tried applying eyelashes on my bjd that can be used by humans. They are a pain to put on but they work.

The thing is... they never look natural, even though I cut them to size and try to put them in different ways somehow when the eyes are placed they force the eyelashe into a different position, they don't curl up like natural eyelashes, instead they sort of cover part of the eye, pointing downwards instead of up. They also look too stiff. You know what I mean? I wish I had photos :doh

Is there a trick to aplying them that I'm not getting?

Is it worth buying the eyelashes especially made for dolls?

I'm considering doing the eyelashes myself like I've seen in a tutorial in this forum... but I'm not sure if it will make any difference.

      Opinions anyone?

    15. They're doing the same thing to me, I'd like to know the solution as well.
Oh and I used that tutorial using a paint brush to make them. They look wonderful, but, again there's that problem.
      -____-;

    16. :( I guess I won't waste a brush then...

    17. I personally think that human eyelashes are too long. Even if you trim them down, one irregular cut makes it look pretty bad/unsalvageable.

Some customizers place eyelashes further into the eyewell instead of right on the lashline. That way, lashes aren't too long or droopy and curl upwards.

I like doll eyelashes; the lengths are appropriate for dolls (especially smaller dolls such as MSD/tiny-sized dolls). They're relatively inexpensive to pick up although I'd try to join a group order or order a few more bigger items to compensate for the expensive EMS shipping.

    18. Personally, I've found by adhering lashes inside the eyewell, they tend to dropp downward.

Has anyone tried using an eyelash curler? I've also heard about curling eyelashes by placing one on a tissue and rolling it around a round pencil or a sturdy straw. The problem I can see, though is that usually eyelashes aren't made to be kept on indefinitely, so unless you want to try an eyelash curler while the lashes are on the doll....

    19. What I don't get is what makes doll eyelashes look better than the regular ones... I've seen them on bjds websites and they look the same.

That's why I'd like to know if it's worth buying them the next time I order something from a bjd site or if the same thing will happen with them too.

    20. I'd definitely recommend the eyelash curler. Bend them to right angles and glue them in the eye well. That's the way my Volks Lucas came default and other eyelashes I've done that way worked out fine. It take the extra length out of them, too.

EDIT: Here is a photo of the eyelashes glued inside the eyewell and then bent at an angle so they're straight on the outside. This head came this way from Volks.

    21. Thanks brighnasa... right angles... I see... I guess I'll try again then.

    22. That's so weird! My friend had some human (the halloween kind) eyelashes put in her doll and they look adorable! I wonder why, I'll go look and ask her maybe what she did. Here's the pictures of her doll with the eyelashes I don't know if it's doing the thing you're worried about though. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169676

    23. As far as looking better it just depends on your opinion I think. I've used both eyelashes made for dolls and eyelashes made for humans in dolls. The only real difference I've found is doll eyelashes are smaller in general size and you don't need to do as much cutting (with the exception of some I've bought from dollmore that were practically the same size as human ones (might have been for humans)). As far as putting them in, yah it's a trick alright and it's taken me doing it over a dozen times to finally figure the thing out. I wish i had a pic of the last two dolls I've put eyelashes in but I don't, so I'll use my mnf shiwoo elf that's faceup was done and had eyelashes put in by luts which is where i learned the positioning from in the first place. Lol in fact I had to fix part of this eyelash becuase the glue luts used wasn't very good.

While the pic is a little fuzzy, you can see that it sits right at the back edge of the eye well and it turns up perfectly. I positioned a set of human eyelashes the same way in an msd head and they turned up lovely as well. Of course if you're having trouble with them curving too much just use some white glue like aileen's tacky glue and glue the lashes to the top of the eye socket. you'll never be able to salvage the lashes and may have trouble getting them out in the future but it's nothing a few dabs of alcohol wouldn't solve.
As far as getting them in that exact spot, I have an old paint brush that is coated with hardened gloss so it has a nice sharp point and I just glaze the glue across, hold the eyelash on a finger close to the head on the outside, stick the brush through the eye from the inside, balance the lash on it and pull it in to where I need it and hold it in one specific spot till it sticks and slowly mash the rest of the lash across the glue. I also usually dab a little extra glue on top after the eylash is in for extra hold.

wow can i gab about eyelashes. hope i've been somewhat helpful....

    24. Musoka: those eyelashes look great, I wonder why mine don't ever look like that...

mel-mel-chan: If I'm understanding correctly, you've set the eyelashes outside, on the rim of the eye, whereas I've always glued them way inside the head, where the glue is hidden away, which is how I read it should be done :S But maybe I got it all wrong... I'll try it that way.

      Thanks ^_^ that's very helpful

This is what happens when someone (me) has never seen a bjd with a properly done faceup lol My boy came without one and he's the only bjd I've ever seen personaly. So all these little tricks are a complete mistery to me lol

    25. this answered my question because i was thinking about using doll lashes as well.

    26. I personally use human sized lashes. I have a MSD and cut them slightly longer than in half. I use Helene's cheater method to get them in, and I just set them pretty far back in the eye well so they aren't too long. Personally I really like them, the lashes aren't all exactly the same length, so it looks nicer than blunt ends. It takes a bit of messing around with them, but I always get the results I want ^_^ I don't know much at all about false lashes, but the ones I get from Wal-Mart are made of sterilized human hair. I don't know if that makes any difference over synthetic hair o.O?

    27. I have to confess that I am a little confused by the terms some people use here - can someone explain to me where exactly you glue in your lashes? And what part is the "eye well"? My dictionary didn't give me anything for that word :(

    28. when I did face-up for my Mnf Elf Shiwoo I used human false eyelashes. I always need one piece for SD and MSD sizes, Just cut it half anf trim it to your desired lenght. here are the photos;

I used pretty long one, since my MNFelf shiwoo is a girl. ^_^

    29. the eye well is where the eyes sit in the dolls head :) most people either glue them to the edge of the upper eyelid or further back depending on how long they want the eyelashes to be. personally i hold the eyelashes in place with eye putty. it seems less fiddly :sweat but i've since heard that eye putty can damage eyes so i guess i got lucky..

i'm glad you can use human eyelashes :D that makes everything a lot easier!

    30. use white glue with a toothpick

    31. That's what I do... and I don't even glue mine in because I like to be able to adjust them later. I just hold them in with masking tape.

(Sorry, the inside of her head has quite a bit of pastel residue from the faceup...)

    32. Glad this post is here... i just bought some fake eyelashes from Wal-Mart to use.
FontBandit, Do you have troubles with the eyelashes curling/pointing downward at all?

    33. I use the eyelashes from walmart all the time. They really aren't any different than some of the ones I've bought from doll companies!

I also use the tape method. I'm terribly cheap when it comes to eyelashes and I hate having to rip out and throw a perfectly good pair away just because I re-do the faceup. Also I have real trouble with gluing lashes in, it just takes me forever and I get all angsty when I can't do it right. With the tape method I have no problem at all with them pointing downward. Once the eyeball is in place it keeps the eyelashes pointing outwards. Or if I want them extra curly, pretty much all you have to do is press your finger from the inside of the eye socket and that will curl them up really nicely!

    34. i tried the tape method... it worked ok but it took a lot of work (don't ask me why... i get wonky on some things) and a whole lot of swearing...

    35. Oh so glad I found this thread!!! I'm gonna go have a go tonight with my spare head!!!
I just gotta go find some tape!

      Zoe

    36. i use human lashes - just just one lash strip in two and presto! it's good for one head.
i prefer the tape method as, like stated before me, i hate to waste a pair of eyelashes just cuz i am redoing a faceup. that seems silly.

    37. human top eyelashes tand to be too long for dolls, try using bottom lashes instead.

cutting the lashes will make them very unnatural as lashes should be naturally tapered, snipping the ends will cause them to look weird

to keep the curl on the eyelash, try dabbing a tiny bit of white glue (which dries clear) and then roll them. much better than using an eyelash curler (even with a mini one)

    38. I used top eyelashes with Maren (only way I could find pure white ones)--I just taped them higher so only the ends are visible, and pressed them upward to force them into place.

    39. I have used only the human ones and never had a problem, they curl fine for me O_O

The thing is I have seen some people put them on the wrong way XD they use the side with the glue on it and stick it via that side, but you are supposed to use , preferably, that white craft glue and stick them on the non sticky side. also using toothpicks to position helps.

Also I cut my human lashes in half, so I use one lash and cut it in the middle and then put it in for my SD's, the msds I usually cut off a couple of lashes in the edges and they fit with one too, so you kinda get your moneys worth :)

    40. I used human eyelashes too and had no problems. About cutting, by the way. Don't make lashes straight, that looks unnatural. Turn your scissors so your only using the tip to cut of little pieces at time. (Bad explanation and might be common sense, but I didn't see it in here so...)

    41. What I have found that works the best to afix lashes is the human liquid lash glue made for individual lashes. It can be used with a small art brush. I brush a good amount on the inside lid and the lash band. (Have your lashes cut to size and curled before glueing).
Then I paint a little more once they are applied and let dry. With this glue you can remove the lashes with out damage to the doll or lashes. It holds wonderfully. Plus I can use the glue on myself. It dries perfectly clear and not gloppy. They also sell this glue in colors like black and brown.

    42. I used human eyelashes, and didnt cut them. *laughs*
I love the way they curl and cluster at the ends of the eye near the cheeks.
That's the way they look on my boy:
      http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p211/trust_downfall/3094774133_3beba204c0.jpg

So yes, they are completely usable and can be applied with tape actually, which is what i did. (Also I removed the adhesive tape - peeled them off the eyelashes with an x-acto knife)
You can also tape those ends to keep the adhesive sandwiched between the tape.
It keeps the adhesive from clumping up around the eyes of the doll.
When done right, it's not too bad-looking.
Actually gives a different vibe sometimes.

    43. Hi all, so can I use human eyelash glue on doll?

    44. *stumbling across the thread again*

:sweat The tape method does take some practice... but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. The first few times I did it, I was ready to smash something, I got so frustrated!

The way I do it is to trim the tape to just under the width of the eyewell. Then I attach the eyelash along the narrow end of the strip. After that, I slide the strip in from the front of the eyewell, trying not to scuff the faceup (that's the tricky part), then I just press the tape to the inside of the head.

I haven't had a problem with the lashes curling downward or being too straight, but maybe it's in the kind I use? I get mine from Wal-mart and from Sally Beauty Supply, depending.

As for human eyelash adhesive, I tend to avoid using products meant for humans just because I don't know what is safe on the resin and what isn't. If it has a higher alcohol content, or oil-based products in it, chances are it might not be safe. On the other hand, I already know that Aleene's Tacky Glue is water-based and safe to use on resin, and dries clear.

If I'm not using the tape method... (like when I do faceups for other people), I've always used Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish to adhere the eyelashes. It dries to a clear glossy finish, and since I usually gloss a little around the inside of the eye rim anyway, it blends well. Plus, if you don't put a huge glob on (apply it lightly), it dries pretty quick. And it's completely safe to use on resin! ^_^ Usually I'll put a thin layer on the inside of the eyewell and let it get to kind of a "tacky" finish, then stick on the eyelashes and apply another thin layer over it. After that dries, sometimes I'll put on a third layer of gloss just to be safe. :)

    45. I was kind of wondering if it was safe to use those synthetic eye lashes humans use on BJDs? I was thinking since you can use elmers glue on BJDs and it won't harm them, would it be okay to use that on synthetic eyelashes? I don't want to have to go through the trouble of purchasing doll eyelashes. Since I'm expecting to get a completely blank head, I was curious.

    46. That's what I've done! I just trimmed them to the right size at first I used nail glue but white glue works alot better

    47. So it's safe then? Phew! I thought I was gonna be stuck! Now I can just send those off to the face-up artist I'm contemplating of having paint the head! :)

    48. Human eyelashes are just fine in BJDs. That's all I use.

    49. So what if you want to remove the eyelashes, let's say for a faceup? Would there be the icky residue from the glue left on the Dollie's head?

    50. Most of the folks I know use white glue, and it just peels right off.

    51. Ah yay! That's great news. Now I can just buy ones I like. :3

    52. I once brought a pair of human false lashes at a store and attached it to my Dollfie Dream with Elmers glue :) Don't know if that's ok but it was totally fine with me and looked great. I have since sold my DD.

    53. The only problem I think you might run into is the lashes being too long, but you can always trim them or put them a little further back into the head.

    54. lashes for people are just great and by far a lot cheaper than buying lashes made specifically for dolls. with a little trim, they work just fine. and you can leave them long for a more dramatic look! I actually prefer lashes for people over doll lashes. the fibers look much nicer in my opinion.

as for putting them in, regular white school glue (ie: elmer's glue) works great, but I've also used Aleene's Tacky Glue. Most craft stores have it and I can even get it at my local Wal-Mart. it has a 'tack' to it that makes it easier to put the lashes in. and like Elmer's glue, it dries clear and will peel off easily when it's time to remove the lashes.

    55. Here's a pic of my DD Candy using human lashes that i brought at a dollar store. The lashes was long but i just trimmed off the ends a little.

    56. Human size lashes look so cool) I should try them too.

    57. that is TOO cute
i'll have to try that when my girl gets back from jellyfish ^^

OR!!! i can try this on my boy i'm trying to sell XD

    58. Thanks for all the great tips here. I used the masking tape method on Wal-Mart lashes and it worked great after some fiddling around to get them the right length :)

    59. A world of good advice here, thank you for all the tips. I was wondering if human eyelashes glue is safe. All my questions were answered. Thanks a million! :)
