When growing up, Korinna did not mind her family's isolated existence at the edge of civilization. But following her mother's passing four years ago, Korinna developed a quirk. She had to be constantly reading, writing, singing, walking, or talking - or a sick, cold feeling would grip her heart, and her hands would not stop their trembling.

Having just returned from her first social season in the capital, she's no longer content to waste away with her father and sister in their crumbling estate. After glimpsing the world of beauty and cultivation the noble families of the capital live in, Korinna has found a new purpose: the reinvigoration of her dying house, and a return to the grandeur of their venerable past. But ancient forces have been massing in the dark forests beyond civilization, waiting patiently for the exhaustion of humanity's gatekeepers.
