Name story:

She's named after the opera Samson et Dalila, which has one of my alltime favourite arias, 'Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix'. I'm not sure why I chose to name a sweet little girl after a vengeful temptress.

It isn’t very exciting around here, as Dalila would be the first to tell you. Just sit around day after day, sometimes on this shelf, sometime on that one. Eavesdrop on conversations, change clothes every few months: the usual. It’s the same for everybody, which is why no one believes Dalila when she talks about the day she was attacked by a tiger.

‘You could at least try to make it sound believable,’ they said, but Dalila’s tiger sounded like none they’d ever heard of. For one thing, it was as big as an elephant, with teeth as big as your hand. And though orange, it had cream stripes instead of black, and the most enormous fluffy tail that could wipe away whole families with a single swish. At least, that’s what Dalila said – no one believed her.

They didn’t believe her either when she told them how the fearsome beast approached her, locking its venomous green orbs on her widening violet eyes. Petrified with fear, she couldn’t budge. Once close, the tiger opened its slavering jaws, big enough to snap off Dalila’s head, but…

Well, that was the strange thing. It didn’t bite her head off, although she insisted to everyone who’d listen that this was the tiger’s intention. Instead, it licked her hair. Licked it and licked some more, and finally – oh but it was too terrible! – ran away with it!

She passed out with fright, and when she came to, her hair was no longer blonde as it had been before. It was brown now, and longer. ‘Looks good! Suits you!’ they said to her face, but she heard the grumbled mutterings: ‘I’ve had the same hair for six years, but she makes up silly stories and gets new hair…blatant favoritism…’

Still, it was a consolation. Dalila did have new hair, and she did see a tiger. Sure, today was like yesterday which was the same as the day before that. But who knows what tomorrow could bring?
